Kay Melchisedech Olson is a writer and editor known for her nonfiction children's books on history, culture, and geography. She has served as editorial director at Capstone Press and authored numerous works, including Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish Immigrants, 1820-1920 and The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Many of her books are part of educational series, providing accessible historical narratives. Olson has also contributed to graphic history books like The Great Chicago Fire of 1871, making history engaging for young readers. Her works have been translated into Spanish.

I found this book as a read a-loud digital book when searching for Civil War resources for eight year olds. The read aloud format was great to hear the speech. The side by side comparison of the original text and the contemporary translation is not the same on the digital copy. It is not easy to view the two next to each other in the format I had. Despite this clunky design flaw of the digital version, I think this is a good resource that makes the historic speech more accessible to contemporary children.

This is a great introduction to the famous, beautifully written speech. The grave and lovely words are briefly explained and some background on the war is provided.

Great book that breaks down the Gettysburg Address, sentence by sentence to help young history students understand what was important about this speech. Also provides background on the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg.
