Standing in the midst of majesty and might, Jesus said that if we have faith as small as a mustard seed, we can look at the mountains in the distance, tell them to move, and they will (Matthew 17:20). But what happens when our faith is smaller than the smallest of all seeds? What happens when the mountains won't move? The purpose of this book is to equip and exhort Christians to survive the most difficult days of life, so that the mountains which won't move will move before them.
I would challenge everyone to read this powerful book. It is an eye opener. It is an easy book to read and understand. After reading it I wanted to share it with everyone I know. Thank you to my minister who recommended this book.
I loved the title of this book. I can look back at so many times in mine life when I have been faced with a “mountain”. They never are small, usually more like Mount Everest or Mount Kilimanjaro. As I think about my seemly impossible problem, I am reminded of the children’s play song, “Going on a Bear Hunt”. Each obstacle is met with the chant, “Can't go over it, can’t go under it, can't go around it, got to go through it!” This so describes those moments when you wrestle with your faith, unable to see how God is going to take you through it and to the other side unscathed. We will face many kinds of “mountains”. Maybe it is the death of a loved one, terminal illness, divorce, bad health, loss of possessions, financial setbacks, etc. You can fill in the blanks with your own summits. I found this book both a comfort and encouraging. Jesus tells us that if we have faith as small as a mustard seed, we can move mountains. When look at a mustard seed, I can’t help but wonder how very small my faith must be! It’s hard to know where to start when you are faced with the seemingly insurmountable. The author gives you a place to start, to take hold of God’s hand, and begin your journey through the mountain. He emphasizes that this will take time, more than we want to commit to, and there at times we may not feel much progress is being made. He doesn’t leave you hanging though. With scripture and biblical insights he shows you how to soldier on and not grow weak. He points out that it is okay to feel helpless, because it guides us to the realization that we CAN’T do it alone. Only God can see us through. Often when a person’s faith is tested, they find fault with their church and reject it. I especially like the fact that he emphasizes that the church is a gift and a help. His illustrations really aided me in seeing the points he was making even clearer. A big plus for me was that all the information was biblically and scripturally based. Many of the scriptures would be great to copy and memorize for when you are struggle. One of my favorite parts was the questions “For Reflection”. They helped me to really look inward, and deal with my battles. A great book, for you, for a friend or a Bible study!

When Mountains Won’t Move; How to Survive a Struggling Faith by Jacob Hawk is not a big book both in size and number of pages, but it certainly is big on wisdom. Death of a child, loss of a job, foreclosure of the house, your spouse is walking out, the bills can’t be paid, a serious illness is diagnosed… those are the mountains that show up in the lives of believers and non-believers alike with more regularity than we want. They are mountains that seem impossible for us to move under our own strength.
For the believer, that is where our faith struggle happens. That is where we can get lost. We just don’t know what to do to make the mountains move.
Over the course of the eight chapters in this book, the author shows us how to live in a Matthew 17:20 life, “Truly I say to you, if you will have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” I found this book an easy read, yet not at all simplistic. The author has tackled a difficult subject with encouragement for the reader that is going through a difficult season in their life.

When Mountains Won't Move How To Survive A Struggling Faith by Jacob Hawk is a wonderful learning and helping tool for any one's library.
If you know someone or if you are struggling yourself this book is great to help you work through those struggles. Jacob Hawk has broken down into chapters why we question our faith and how to keep from giving up on our faith. It is a great reference to have to read when struggles come your way to help you remember how God loves you and is there to help you through those struggles,.
It is in easy to understand and read format so that anyone no matter how new or old in their faith in God can read and be helped by this book. It has questions at the end of each chapter to help you review and work through what the chapter has shown you. This would be a good book for a small group to use also.
One of my favorite parts was on page 24 when Jacob tells us that to move past our weakness we must first acknowledge and embrace our weakness. " Embracing weakness makes mountains move." Also " To embrace weakness, we must admit when we're weak." Boy he is telling us that it is okay to have weakness in fact to know we do and to admit it is how we mend and move on. Wow!
This is a great addition to your library and a good book to read again and again. It is also a book to share with those you see and know that are facing struggles to help them move their mountains too.
I would recommend this book to others. You can purchase this book from:
Is your faith struggling? In "When Mountains Won't Move," Jacob Hawk does a fantastic job of offering seven keys to surviving a struggling faith. Jacob's approach is unique because he admits to a faltering faith of his own, so his advice is battle-tested. This book is a perfect gift to anyone facing unmovable mountains in their life.
Interesting approach and good ideas; but main points are usually underdeveloped (in my opinion). Sometimes the illustrations don't always don't seem relatable. Also the ideas presented in the chapters seem disconnected, which leads to a segmented feel. More polish would make the book feel more unified and engaging in a deeper way. I found it worthwhile for starter ideas.
A short, pretty easy read. I've been reading more "technical/academic" stuff lately, so at first it seemed really simple, but more often than not, simple is good, and this book is a good collection of Biblical advise about what you can do when your faith seems at a standstill, or even declining.
Whether you are struggling in your faith, or simply preparing for the storms to come, this book has a number of great insights. It's a bit short, but the questions at the end of each section can provoke a lot of time in honest reflection and prayer, if you let them. All in all, a great tool.
