In the early days of World War II, Great Britain is fighting for its life. With the Nazi Luftwaffe and U-boat wolfpacks bearing down, they've never needed America more. In secret, Winston Churchill travels by sea to Newfoundland to meet with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. When the Nazis learn of the meeting, they deploy their greatest weapon - the Sea Lion, a juggernaut even more dangerous than the sunken Bismark. Its sole mission - track and destroy Churchill's convoy. But in the prime minister's protective naval cordon is the HMS Firedancer, commanded by Captain George Hardy. A veteran of too many hard-fought battles, Hardy struggles to balance duty and honour against the destruction he has wrought in the service of his country. But his most daunting task is still to come. Now, in the merciless North Atlantic, the pride of the Nazi fleet will confront the defiant might of the Allies - with the fate of the war lying in the hands of the victor...
An imaginary German Battleship takes on Churchill. Lots of issues with this book from the distances referenced (kilometers instead of what was obviously meant to be meters) to the distances traveled by ships in an amount of time that would be well beyond the capabilities of the ships. The building of a super battleship by the Germans in secret without being discovered or information being passed on by spies or partizans is also hard to imagine. The American protagonist being at the center of every significant event is also a stretch and he comes across as the type that spawned the saying "oversexed, over paid and over here". If you can overlook some of these issues then the story is good, with lots of tension and vivid battle scenes.
Interesting read. I'm glad I took the time to read it. Unfortunately, large portions of book were a little boring with redundant information regarding ship details, specifically about the new German ship, rather than having dialogue between German sailors advance the story line. Too many story lines not necessarily well developed.
