My head is spinning after finishing this book. At times as I read, I felt I as on the right track and can be a good producer and at other times it made me feel like I was crazy to even try. I found the tenets of producing as Schreibman laid them out were clear and sensible. I now have a great deal of knowledge from which to pull as I continue my work as an indie producer. He clearly explains his view of a creative producer and gives many real life examples to make his points.
The only area I found lacking was in the advances of this digital age. To be fair, the book was published in 2001 and technology has far surpassed what was cutting edge then. Schreibman does address the coming changes and expanded opportunities for independent producers (many of which we have now realized and some we have even surpassed).
That said, this book is still worth reading. Schreibman gives aspiring indie producers the basic tools, knowledge, and practical insight to do what they love well as they navigate the often murky waters of financing, creativity, and the entire process from start to finish.
Very helpful book for independents who have some money and are looking to emulate the big leagues in their production practices -- extremely thorough and clear walk-through of the whole production process from start to finish. Less helpful for folks working on a shoestring budget, but still full of good information regardless.
Good overview of everything you need to be aware of as a producer. Documents every crew member and their duties. Shows you how to budget a film as well. Helpful, not too inspiring, in need of updating.
