Skipper Alex von Strada has a new ship and a new mission. His task is to clean up the infamous deep space station ISiS Karadon. ISiS Corps Director Belassa Torres is determined to defend the station’s independence. Caught between them, manager Chokran Dayfield will find his sanity and even his life on the edge.
“I intend to put a stop to drug trafficking on Karadon and to bring all those responsible to justice. You have my assurance that I will do whatever it takes to achieve that objective. I would like you to keep that picture of Annabella Tokford laying dead in the street, Mr Dayfield. Put it on your desk. At any time when you are unclear as to my objectives and intentions here, just look at that picture.”
The Fourth Fleet Irregulars leap into their second operation with the enthusiasm of teenagers allowed to play with explosives.
I am a primary school teacher living in Cardiff, Wales, UK. I live in a tiny house full of books, animals, rocks and fossils.
I love travelling by myself because you get to meet more local people that way. My favourite trips so far have been ice fishing in the arctic circle, the Canadian Rockies in winter and camping with my sister in Devon (Every bit as adventurous!)
I have been writing stories since I was a kid but have only recently taken the plunge into publishing. I've also recently started a science fiction review site http://www.starshipsandaliens.com which is nearly as much fun as writing.
This is not an all action space opera, there are no massive space battles, but there is still a lot going on. At times I found the first book ’Mission Zero’ boring, partly because the author over explained everything, but this happened only occasionally in this book. Overall I thought it was an enthralling story and I am now hooked on the series.
As with all science fiction you have to be flexible to enjoy it. ?McDOnald's writing is a bit different. He writes as if he is telling a story that has happened on the past. Also, if you are expecting tons of action, rockets blasting, bombs bursting, and lasers flash in; then this is not your book. However, the human drama seems like it COULD happen and the human interaction Anand conflict seems totally believable. Others knock those science as unbelievable but that's a hard line to draw in a science fiction novel. I enjoyed it. It as a good story.
Much better writing than the first book. Karadon is so enjoyable and exactly the kind of intelligent sci fi I want to read. I'm really interested in seeing if The Shareholder plays a role in future books. I'm going to read book #3 next.
This third of the Fourth Fleet Irregulars book was much better than the previous one "XD". I enjoyed this book because it went quickly into it's story line, getting the drug peddlers off of the space station Karadon. There were a few places where I though the writer went off on "rabbit trails" with nice but not really necessary information. But the book moved along well and had some good action parts where I was eagerly awaiting what would happen next. It did not feel at all like drudgery reading this book vs the previous one.
The gist of the story line is the Heron, Von Strada's ship shows up at a huge space station called Karadon that the authorities are sure is a major haven for drug smugglers. And the Heron and crew use their technology to get rid of the drug smugglers. There is not a lot of science in the story since for the most part the Heron is parked at the station during most of the story. But I found it fascinating that one of the tools they used was to hack into the stations networks and even at the end turn off the station's gravity, then make it reverse. There was no explanation of how they did that but it was cool.
If you take the first book as a 'teaser', this second book takes it to full on "movie" levels.
It expands upon everything in the first book, and goes into more detail of the universe that the 4th Fleet Irregulars is set.
Once again, it's a very "Light" book, with not really any sinister things going on except drug smuggling, but it's handled in a way that's both exciting and new. There's no big alien invasion, or massive conspiracy, it's just generally inter-system events, but that allows a picture to build up of the traffic and spacers around the ISiS station.
I've not explained it very well there, but it IS a very good book
I liked the book but I failed to write my review while it was fresh in my mind. This was I think the best of the "Irregulars" books. In the book the ship's captain used some very slick diplomatic moved to clean up a space station that harbored drug dealers and other unsavory characters. This was a good read.
I have enjoyed reading this second book of the Fourth Fleet Irregulars. Its shows the readers both the hard and serious side of captain Alex. But we also see that he can smile and laugh will people. His crew work hard for him and their ship. Looking forward to reading the next adventure of the crew of the heron.
This is the second book in the series and I am looking forward to reading the next book. Alex Von Strada is a brilliant maverick with an interesting crew. They are magnets for bad publicity and superb at completing difficult missions with style. Lots of fun!
Well the story of the fourth seems to grow on it's own. You become involved with the whole crew. The solutions they come up with are unconventional approach to the problems at hand. This makes this series stand out from your normal space opera.
