I’m more than just a little irritated. And saddened.

Let’s begin with the harmless stuff. Those first few pages came as a shock. Yes, this series employed loose speech before but it’s like an explosion of fake badass trash talk here.

Lachlan scrubbed a hand down his face. He needed to get over his shit and get his game face on. The dark warriors were always ready to throw down. That meant they had to bring their A game and kick some serious ass and rescue Miles.

Really? Lachlan’s supposed to be around a hundred years old. Just pointing this out. Even if he were younger, this is just a barrage of clichés.

The bad writing does not end there. I lost count of how often words are used erroneously. Often a vague resemblance to the correct word is enough to use it (“worried” does not carry the same meaning as “worrisome”). I’m not trying to bash the author for this. Some people are more prone to mixing up words than others. If a writer’s affected that way, they don’t lose the ability to tell great stories. But someone needs to fix these things for them during editing. Why didn’t anyone?

Then the repetitions. Until I wanted to scream. Really, maybe I am unusual in this (although I doubt it) but I only need to read something once to remember it for the remainder of the book. Twice is okay. Anything beyond gets irritating and wasteful if nothing new is added. Why would we need entire paragraphs reiterated after only a page or so?

I didn’t like either of the protagonists. It’s sad when every single one of the secondary characters is more appealing.

One of the several things I find fundamentally wrong with how this story plays out is that these two are supposed to be men. Their attraction to one another is fierce due to the whole mating thing. It’s emotions that get in the way. I’d figure they would just fuck like bunnies anyway. This isn’t necessarily anything that connects to the emotional issues. It’s just sex. This feels a bit as though they’re old-style romance heroines who’ll inevitably fall in love with the first man who puts it in so they deny each other or themselves.

On a sub-note, paranormals tend to play loose and fast with animal sizes but that the wolf is that much bigger than the lion? Seriously? Maybe if Lachlan’s a really small lion. But average males are still bigger than the biggest real wolf and considering Lachlan’s a shifter too he’s likely not on the lower end of the natural spectrum either.

Back to the “romance”. Luuuuuuuuuube! Please! This is unsexy. There’s hardly any prep either and then he just shoves it in. Seriously? I don’t get a loving vibe here. Words don’t make it so.

At least here it’s acknowledged as being painful and somewhat lacking but I really… Ugh. And sorry, being dry it’s gonna hurt more with each thrust, not less, no matter that you’re turned on. This isn’t the burn from the stretch that fades once you adjust. This is chafing friction.

This is not happening just once; it’s setting up a theme. It does not convey a sense of passion and urgency. It merely makes it seem you don’t care about your partner’s comfort, pleasure and wellbeing.

Later events, at any rate, only confirm that Garrett’s an abusive asshole. When that happened I completely lost all remaining interest in this book that sure as hell is not a romance. Compared to that, the fact that Lachlan keeps throwing the first punch (towards others, usually those weaker than himself and at only moderate provocation) pales. Although? It does get worse from there.

And don’t even try to tell me that just because he’s a paranormal there’s no danger in sexual practises that can tear a guy up inside. In the previous volumes it was stated that although healing occurs faster and sicknesses won’t transfer, paranormals do die from wounds just like anyone else and there are scars left when they heal. This is not funny, it’s not sexy, and it sure as hell is not what exerting dominance means. It’s bullying and abuse, something a weak mind resorts to in order to feel strong.

Of course… The whole “we take damage from being wounded” thing is being retconned as well. Towards the end, This is something that even in other books about ridiculously superpowered beings cannot be healed (or if so, then it takes time and usually there’s residual damage).

During the finale, amidst more of the ridiculous good vs. evil stuff and endless repetitive speeches about things are that pretty damn obvious to begin with, we’re also treated to some of the more extreme instances of violence. I’m not complaining, but I did not expect the author to go this far. Then again, she clearly has found a taste for painful sex and, generally, rape as a plot and character motivation device, which in my opinion trivializes a very serious subject.

I’m disappointed. Sure, some of the many, many characters set up for future volumes interest me, but I’m not sure anymore if it’s worth hanging in there for the chance that they might live up to their promise. Besides, with all those people set up and already well into their respective relationships, it’s impossible to predict how many years I’ll have to wait for the ones I want.

This was the last book in the bundle, and I found it just as fascinating as the first three. Garrett (alpha wolf), and Lachlan (lion), were having issues in the previous book, so in this one they finally come to an understanding growing even closer and strengthening their bond. These stories significantly hold my attention, and the danger adds to the plot, although it can be ruthless and brutal, they find a way to overcome. There are surprises and twists in the story, and the ending was exceptional. Loved it. :)

Garrett has messed up bigtime with his mate Lachlan. He turned a blind eye to the way some of his pack was treating Lachlan for being a lion shifter. He also tried to control Lachlan, an alpha in his own right. Lachlan finally had enough and left Garrett.

Now they are being forced back together in order to find the dark agents that may be in the pack. Garrett knows he has some grovelling to do to get Lachlan back. Lachlan has to also forgive Garrett and together they need to find a way to make it work for both of them.

Damn, this two are smoking hot together, seriously. The fireworks between them were off the charts. They were both alphas that definitely needed to learn how to overcome their need to control and work together. They had to find an understanding with each other. It was not easy for either but in the end they did get it together.

I really enjoyed their give and take in this one. Although they made mistakes on both sides. Also there was some pretty funny scenes throughout as they fixed them. Their friends added a good deal of comic relief as they stuck their two cents.

The secondary characters were just as interesting in this book as the main characters. I am most definitely looking forward to reading their own stories in the series.

The dark are getting even more cruel and evil in their goals to kill the light warriors. The baddie in this book really topped the nasty list in the things they did. The action was really off the chain in this book. Pretty damn bloody. But in the end the light does win over the dark again.

There was a lot of great scenes. Good sex, good humor, and a good storyline. I really enjoyed this ride.

Garrett coming to grips with how he's not treating his mate as an equal continues throughout most of the book. Lachlan reacts much better the second time around to Garrett's behavior and learns a little about his own.

Learning about the witch they are hunting of course brings up more questions and the person Lachlan was warned about not trusting (sorry not giving it away!) was the first person on my suspect list so no great mystery there.

Liked how things for these two basically did a 180 at the end and new characters introduced, even if it takes a while to warm up to them.

Good read. The characters were well matched and even though I started out hating a few of the minor characters by the end I was hoping they would b alright and hoping they get their own story.
can't wait to see what happens next in the series
