All I Want For Christmas Is A Duke

Rate this book
Two ladies. Two dukes. One Christmas. And scandal galore.

A Christmas anthology by two hot names in historical romance fiction...

Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle

Lady Jane left her father, the Earl of Chadwick, and the ton behind to experience life on the stage. After a disastrous marriage, the widow is living on the edge of poverty, determined to guard her heart, when a secret admirer from her past demands a second chance.

Shy and retiring Martin Nicholas Pierce, the Sixth Duke of Somerset, has carried a torch for Lady Jane since her youth, but he is five years her junior. When she married another man, he left for Europe, determined to put her out of his mind. After returning to find Lady Jane free, he vows to replace the memories of her cursed Twelfth Night with a new beginning.

The Twelve Days of Seduction By Màire Claremont

Alexander Hunt, Eighth Duke of Berresford, is aware his ward's governess isn’t quite what she seems. Although Miss Flint is beautiful and intelligent, she misrepresented herself to gain employment, and he threatens to give her the sack mere days before Christmas.

Desperate to convince the sexy duke not to tear her from the little girl she's grown to adore, Adriana challenges him to seduce her before the Twelve Days of Christmas have come to an end, although she fears it may cost her heart. Alexander accepts the challenge, unconcerned that he has as much to lose, if not more, than the delectable Miss Flint.

I spent my youth studying various languages, reading voraciously, and playing the pianoforte. I confess that here ends the extent of my gentle breeding. I was a naughty child who was forever torturing her parents with countless adventures that they did not deem respectable. Confined to my room on many occasions due to these misadventures, I soon discovered the quill and its amazing power. I scribed endless stories that almost invariably surrounded the topic of love, for I felt an inane need to be rescued from a family that did not understand my lust for life. In my mind, King Arthur became my true love and I waited for the day when he would come riding upon his steed and invite me to sit at his round table, not as his queen, but as his knight. To my distress, King Arthur was never to be found anywhere except for in the tip of my quill. And so I led an imaginary life for many, many years. When I finally came of age, my family was further horrified to discover that I had fallen in love with an American. An American King Arthur who became my knight, my husband, my all. I have been blessed beyond reason and am grateful for each day I have with him. What is equally amazing is that I now have the opportunity to share my passion for stories with the public. The reason why I write romance is because it allows me to touch upon the subject of love on a much deeper, more intimate level. Many of the stories I write, many of the stories I will continue to write, will always evolve around love. And yes, gentle readers, it will also evolve around sex as I have no intention of becoming my parents and restraining my characters from what it is they truly desire to do. I challenge you, my readers, to let loose of those corsets that have been strung too tightly due to convention and enjoy 1830 to its fullest."

Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle
I really enjoyed this one! Lady Jane defied her father and became an opera singer and in the process, started receiving letters from the mysterious Mister X. Thinking she found the writer, she marries him only to be deceived. Now, widowed and living close to poverty, she guards her heart and when her childhood friend, Martin Pierce, Duke of Somerset, appears and reveals the truth she is hurt to be deceived all over again. I loved that shy Martin grew up in the years apart and was determined not to let his love slip away again. Jane realizes that the younger Martin has turned into a dashing man and is no longer a young boy. Watching them re-connect was a joy. This was a enjoyable, fresh (we do not get to see many older woman falling for younger men) holiday novella from the talents of Delilah Marvelle filled with heat, tenderness, humor, heart, forgiveness and a dash of holiday cheer. 4 stars

The Twelve Days of Seduction by Maire Claremont
This is a classic story of a governess falling for her employer and vice versa. What makes it different is all the details that Maire Claremont adds. The history of the governess, Adriana Flint is sad and heart breaking but it has shaped her into the woman she is today and she refuses to lose her job to the most wonderful little girl just because the Duke of Berresford has found out her past. When Alexander proposes a plan for her to stay, she agrees as long as he tries to seduce her...and in the process they both lose their hearts. Adriana helps Alexander see that the lower class are people too and he in turn helps her see that it is ok to let the wall down around her heart and let someone in. Strong writing, unique details and the hope of the holidays with a nice dash of heat add up to a winner. Looking forward to her debut full length to see more of her writing! 4 stars

Overall, a lovely holiday treat that will leave you wishing for your own Duke for Christmas with holiday cheer, heat and love.

Enjoyed this Christmas anthology of two short stories.

Merry Christmas Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle
What a romantic treat. I adore Martin Pierce, a very shy 17 year old man who falls deeply in love with his friend, Lady Jane. But, he does not know how to court a twenty two year old adventuress. Therefore he becomes the mysterious Mister X who pens his true feelings to Jane through letters. After eight years of separation they reunite. Two modest, compassionate characters. I look forward to the release of the novella with added bonus material and scenes in December 2016.

The Twelve Days of Seduction by Máire Claremont
This story did not hold my attention. Too many unnecessary words. The plot was boring, as well. 2 stars

REVIEW OF MERRY CHRISTMAS, MRS ROBINSON BY DELILAH MARVELLE

Once again, Delilah Marvelle captivated me with this touching and sensual friends-to-lovers/ older woman/younger man story.

I adore Martin. I couldn’t help but feel for the shy, reserved seventeen year old, whose self-esteem took a battering from the father who thought his son “was good at nothing but breathing”. Now he is a confident man who decides his own future and is determined to pursue the woman he has always loved. He is kind and compassionate and his love and concern for his great aunt Ernastine is so heart-warming.

“The way you fuss over this old woman is rather endearing. It makes me feel worthy.”
His chest tightened. “You are worthy.”

Jane felt betrayed and used by her late husband when she discovered that he had lied about being Mister X. She gave up the opulent life of an opera singer and, for the past eight years, she has been living a simple life teaching children how to sing and being a Good Samaritan to others. Then one day while shopping, she sees a face from the past…Martin.

How could she ever forget what had once been her dearest and closest friend?

I loved watching their romance unfold …the initial awkwardness, Jane’s reactions to the ‘breathtaking’ man Martin has become, shared memories, Jane’s mistrust, Martin digging his heels in, heated kisses, Martin’s revelation and Jane’s hurt, heartfelt words, Jane’s uncertainty, some straight talking…

“Look at me and remember who it is you are looking at. It isn’t Philip, or Mister X, but me. Me. Martin. Your friend. First and foremost, always your friend. Lover last.”

and some steamy passion.

I loved how Martin brought about a healing of the rift between Jane and her father and their reconciliation scene tugged at the heartstrings. I adored Martin’s great aunt Ernastine…such a delightful character and so wise as well. I liked Martin’s brother, Christopher and was amused by the scene where he gives Martin some much needed advice on how to woo Jane.

Epilogues are my weakness. They are the icing on the cake when it comes to happy endings and this story had an Epilogue which left me with a satisfied smile on my face.

REVIEW OF THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS BY MÁIRE CLAREMONT

I loved this story of a Duke and governess falling for each other. It’s by an author that I was lucky enough to discover earlier this year, when I read her brilliant debut novel The Dark Lady.

I admired Adriana. She had literally pulled herself out of the gutter, reinvented herself and secured a respectable position as a governess. The years of struggle have made her strong and determined and I love how she draws on that strength and refuses to be cowed by Alexander when he threatens to throw her out.

She was safe here. She had a place. A home. A little girl to love and who loved her in return. Oh, no. She wasn’t simply going to skulk away.

Adriana had found happiness for the first time in her life…a place to belong. I could understand why she is willing to stay as Alexander’s mistress but I was pleased that Alexander doesn’t get everything quite his own way. I loved her for being willing to put Alexander and Georgiana first even though it means sacrificing all her hopes and dreams.

Beneath that austere, ducal façade, Alexander has a kind and loving heart. It is clear he loves his crippled daughter very much and wants to protect her from the harsh realities of life…their scenes together are so poignant. Through Adriana’s novels, he comes to understand the harsh reality of her earlier life, why she lied and realises he has found the true Adriana, ‘a woman who deserved admiration and praise’. He sees how Georgiana has blossomed under Adriana’s love and patience.

I enjoyed seeing him lose control when it comes to his feelings for Adriana and his willingness to stand up for her when it counts. I love the scene where Rothby turns up at the Twelfth Night Revels, with the intension of causing trouble for Adriana, but finds himself completely outmanoeuvred by Alex.

Once again, my wish for a heart-warming Epilogue was more than satisfied.

Favourite romantic quote:

“Because I love you, Adriana Flint. You. The author. The girl who survived the streets. The governess who reached out to my daughter. And the woman who seduced my soul.”

Merry Christmas, Mrs Robinson

"Your missive? He paused at seeing it. He snatched it up and unfolded it. Whilst reading it, a breath escaped him. Holding her gaze for a long moment, he slowly brought it to his lips and kissed it. Not once, but twice."

This is a darling friends-to-lovers story with a bit of a twist: she's 5 years older than him. Throw in a tiny bit of heroine worship, an 8 year separation and a man who simply loves a woman, and you'll have yourself a great couple of hours of reading. I've never been a big fan of Delilah Marvelle but this one shines. 4 stars

Dear Reader,
Ever wonder what happened to the person you first fell in love with many, many years ago? Ever wonder what would happen if you had a chance to meet them again when you were older and wiser? In my Christmas novella, Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson, I give you a very special re-union between two souls who weren't ready to love when they first met but how Christmas is about to change it all.

'Merry Christmas Mrs. Robinson' by Delilah Marvelle

This story was extra special to me because of its pairing of the older woman/younger man. In my personal life, I am the older woman...

Lady Jane was only in her early twenties when she decided, and was encouraged by her younger friend Martin, to defy the society and reach for her dream of becoming an opera singer. A decision like that came with a heavy price of being estranged from her family and being shunned by most of the society. I say most, because men of that society adored and pursued her relentlessly. One of them in particular caught not just her attention, but the attention of the papers as well. To all of them he was only known as Mister X and his letters were something she looked forward to, knowing that his words brought her closer to that elusive thing called love. And then one day, a man shows up and claims her heart in the name of Mister X...

Martin Pierce, the sixth Duke of Somerset, is worried about his elderly Aunt who was neglected by his family because many years ago she defied Society and ran off with a man not worthy of her station. He is trying very hard to have her see and understand that the living quarters she resides in are roach infested and not suitable to her station. Through his discussion with her, he finds out that the woman he adored and never could forget is now impoverished and residing in the same building as his Aunt. This news crushes him and he realizes that the time has come for him to act on his deep feelings for her.

It's no secret to any of my followers how much I love anything this author writes and this short novella is no different. I loved the way she portrayed both hero and heroine as two lonely souls that connected as friends first, and lovers later.

As they grew older, they seemed to have reversed their personalities. Long ago, Martin was all of seventeen; shy and reserved young fellow with a deep feeling for an `older' woman of twenty-two. The only relationship he could offer Jane was that of a friend. That, however never stopped him from secretly declaring his love for her through his letters.

Jane had been strong and forward thinking female filled with excitement and not shy at all. She believed in herself and her dreams, wanting to absorb all that life had to offer, most of all the love of a man whom she loved through his letters.

Years later, Jane's doubts and apprehension of the intimacy she knows she wants, but isn't sure of are now keeping her away from Martin.

Martin on the other hand is now a man to be reckoned with. Gone is the shy and timid youngster to be replaced by this gloriously handsome and love starved man who knows what he not just wants but needs with all his heart.

This is one of those stories that I'll be rereading from year to year, that's how good it was! My heart just went out to both of them. In this story you'll find a bit of everything, from wit to sensuality, but romance is the driving force and I highly recommend it for many Christmases to come.

REVIEW: `The Twelve Days of Seduction' By Máire Claremont

This story comes to us from an author that will blow us all away when her début book comes out next year. Keep an eye on `The Dark Lady: A Novel of Mad Passions' coming out February 5, 2013.

If y'all are `Jane Eyre' fans, this one will be a hit for you, no question about it. For all of those that never read `Jane Eyre' [or for that matter saw any version's offered to us from many filmmakers, notably the BBC series with Toby Stephens playing Mr. Rochester, who I thought did even better job than Orson Welles], I am sure you'll love it as well.

Adriana Flint's understated beauty and strong character were driving force behind this story of a woman who pulled herself out of the gutter, quite literally.

She is a survivor and through sheer determination alone, she reinvents herself as this proper English miss that takes the position of a governess, to a little girl who is challenged by a limp, the Duke of Berresford's ward. She adores the little mite and dedicates herself to teaching her ways to overcome her disability. Adriana also realizes that sooner or later, her secret identity and her `moonlighting' job will be discovered and crush not only her, but two people she had come to care for so much.

Alexander Hunt, Eighth Duke of Berresford is a man who adores his little ward and would do anything to keep her from harm. Over a year ago he had hired her Governess and watched the little girl thrive under her care. He respected and observed the boundaries he set by ignoring his secret desire for the prim and proper young woman under his employ and protection. That, however is about to change, as he confronts her and decides to either throw her on her ear, or keep her as his mistress and far away from his home.

As they both come to an understanding that would be amicable to both, Adriana accepts his offer to become his mistress, but only if he manages to seduce her for the next twelve days. Ms. Claremont writes the rest of the story with an easy prose, fast pace and gives us a look into the romance of these two lonely but headstrong people who will make your eyes mist.

Both of these stories were written with romance in mind first and will touch your heart with its unique characters, setting and sensuality.

I am always happy when I read Ms. Marvelle's work, but now my curiosity is peaked by the new author I discovered and am eagerly awaiting and looking forward to making room for on my Keeper shelf.

DNF. Read through most of chapter four before I had enough.

The premise is a good one, but the execution is annoying.

Teen-age heir to a dukedom falls in love with an opera singer three to five years his senior (at one point he is fifteen at another he's seventeen). Though they are friends, he is too shy to express his feelings. So he writes her letters signed Mr X. She writes letters back and over time she falls in love with the mystery man.

Another man finds out about the letters, reads them, then poses as Mr X. Three months later, he weds the heroine instead.

Broken hearted, the hero leaves for the continent for a six year tour.

Tossed in plot tid bits:

The heroine/opera singer is an Earl's daughter who was disowned when she chose to take to the stage.

Two weeks after her wedding (two weeks of wedded bliss, apparently), she finds out about the deception during a party. She confronts her husband in front of everyone, screams that she wants a divorce. He swears he will find the man who wrote the letters and kill him.

Then he drops dead.

Yes, a thrity year old man drops dead from arguing.

That scene was way too melodramatic for me. The heroine was "over the top horrified" for a woman of twenty years. She was wooed for three months before marrying the man she loved, who apparently was satisfying in bed.

Did she really think a stack of love letters more important than a flesh and blood man whom she had traded vows with? Really? Hurt and a bit angry about the lie, (a bit complimented he went to such lengths to secure her love) but to insist on a divorce? No one talked of divorce back then. And only the man could seek one.

I have to admit, that one of my pet peeves is the incorrect usage of divorce (or annulment) in historical romance novels. No one went into marriage at that time thinking there was any other way out except death.

The story picks up six years later. The hero is twenty-five and a duke. He visits a long lost aunt at a run down boarding house and finds out that the heroine lives in a room, one floor down.

Right after the heroine's husband died, she gave up her successful opera career, even though she did not receive a penny from her husband in his will. (Yeah, well, that is a middle class/lower class attitude. The wealthy peoples update important documents upon death, birth, betrothal and marriage - that's why they have solicitors. We po' people don't have more debt than wealth to worry 'bout so we tend to forget to update paperwork in a timely manner.)

Her husband's relatives offered to provide for the heroine but the prideful TSTL heroine decided to live in near poverty and make her way by providing singing lessons to children instead.

Yeah, well, I don't understand that decision. As spoiled as she was and how much she loved the adoration of the audience, these decisions seemed out of character for the daughter of an Earl, raised to be a lady, who loved being the center of attention. The death of a husband she claimed not to love and a man she thinks betrayed her trust, didn't seem to be reason enough to throw away the future she carved out for herself.

Well, anyway...

The duke finds her outside a sweet shop. After a kid nails her skirt and peticoats to the building (still scratching my head on the logistics of that) he asks her to share a glass of brandy with him.

She's all worried about scandal, what people will think, how it's not proper - really???? She became an opera singer, considered not much better than a whore, caused a public scene where her husband dropped dead, and she worries now what people will think of her?? It's not like she changed her name to hide from her past.

Over brandy, the hero confeses that he wrote the letters.

The heoine has another one of her over the top, angry, feeling betrayed, "how dare you do this to me" scenes.

Nearly thirty years old, and she still acts like a pre-teen.

Mature much?

Well, I had enough at that point and moved on.

I really enjoyed the All I Want for Christmas is A Duke anthology. Both novellas in this book are heartwarming, romantic, and have just the right amount of heat.

I am familiar with author Delilah Marvelle's writing, and I always enjoy her stories. Being familiar with at least one author, I was eager to read All I Want for Christmas is a Duke, especially Delilah's story, Merry Christmas, Mrs Robinson. After her first marriage ended tragically, Lady Jane had resigned herself to a simple life, separate from her family and former friends. She never found her mysterious Mr. X and figured she never would. Martin, the Duke of Somerset, returns from abroad to find Jane single, and he determines to not let her go again. Mr X is back, and this time, he won't let his love slip away.

Merry Christmas, Mrs Robinson is a short, but very touching story. Martin was very young when he fell in love with Jane, and he had some growing and manning up to do. Jane needed a man who could love her and be there for her. It took time apart, years, but when they reconnected, their relationship progressed quickly. I like that both of the characters had to go their own way for a while before they could be together. It made their relationship stronger in the end. This was an excellent novella.

As for Maire Claremont's novella, The Twelve Days of Seduction, this one took me by surprise. I had not read Maire Claremont's books before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. From the minute I began reading The Twelve Days of Christmas, I found myself relating to the characters and falling in love with their story. Adriana Flint is a woman who has worked her way up from the slums of London to become a governess to the Duke's ward. Adriana has many secrets, or so she thought, but she loves her job, her charge, and is desperate to keep her place. Alexander, the Duke, has learned that his governess is not who she claims. Propriety would have him throw her out, but her pleading and relationship with his ward inspire him to agree to a deal. He has twelve days to seduce the lovely Miss Flint. The seduction soon turns into something much more.

I love Adriana Flint. Her character is a very strong, independent woman who has made her way through a very difficult life. She speaks her mind, loves her charge deeply, and knows what she wants. Alexander is taken back by her, challenged by her. I loved how their relationship unfolded. It was not a love at first sight thing, it was more of an eye-opening relationship. When Alexander learned who Adriana really was, he began to really see her and get to know her. The result was chemistry and sparks. I loved this short story, and I can't wait to read more of Maire Claremont's work in the future.

Readers, if you are looking for heart-warming romance with a bit of heat, you can't go wrong with All I Want for Christmas is a Duke. Both novellas are excellent reads.

This duology features two fantastic novellas, featuring historical Christmas romances. I would absolutely recommend, since I adored them both.

"Merry Christmas, Mrs Robinson" - I really, really enjoyed this one!! Years ago, Jane fell in love with a secret admirer. A man who called himself only Mr. X sent her beautiful letters... letters she responded to in kind. She had no idea they were coming from Martin, a younger friend who never believed she would return his affection if she knew who she was. When an older, dashing man came forward, claiming to be Mr. X, Jane believed him and married him. It only took a couple of weeks for his lies to surface and for Jane to demand a divorce. Only, her husband dropped dead before he could grant her wish.

It's been eight years since that happened. Martin, who left town when Jane got married, is back. And circumstances bring him back into Jane's life. This time, however, he refuses to hide who he is and how he feels. Can they find love after all that has happened?

This story was so good! The characters were so engaging. It's impossible not to root for Martin as reaches for his dream of a life with Jane. The sexual tension is palpable. The sex is hot. And in just 100 pages or so, Delilah Marville had me completely emotionally invested in their future. Loved.

"The 12 Days of Seduction" - The day Adrianna has long dreaded has finally come to pass. Her employer has finally learned about her past and real identity. She had adopted a softer, more proper, persona as governess to Alexander's daughter. The position, and the child, have come to mean the world to her. But all is not lost. Alexander wants her as his mistress. She challenges him to seduce her and as he works to do that, he ends up peeling back the layers of Adrianna's true self she has hidden for so long.

Adrianna has worked hard to shed her horrible past, and she is a good person. I loved watching Alexander discover what a treasure she is. Just the right combination of romance and sensuality, this novella really hit the spot.

It's rare for a novella to truly satisfy for me, but both of these really did. I was already a fan of Marvelle, but now I won't hesitate to try more from Clairmont.

Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle.
Absolute perfection.
5 you-were-always-the-one solid stars.
Don't let the cheesy title fool you, Martin and Jane's journey back to each other has everything you need: betrayal, self-doubt, heartbreak, loneliness, and longing. Wrapped up in a second chance tale filled with, IMHO, the best witty, tender, and believable dialogue between two main characters I have read in a very long time.
Every time I read a Delilah Marvelle story I am struck how she can write beautiful words that are so atmospheric and detailed that you can feel that anticipation of that warm hand, hear the sound of the snow falling, curl your toes involuntarily and sigh.
Yup. That works for me. Pure and simple romance.

12 Days of Seduction by Marie Claremont.
First time reading Marie Claremont. The author has a Gothic sensibility to her writing, which I favor, so I would read her again.
I am rating this story 3.5 Gothic Fairytale stars.
I loved how dramatic this short started out! Our heroine is being called out as misrepresenting herself to her employer the Duke, our hero. Ooooooo...dun dun dun!
But it's the other parts of the initial set up for her backstory (how did she get to this place at this time?); her counteroffer to the Duke (really? a woman in her position, in that scenario, in that time period?? Hmmm); and the akwardness of the whole employer/employee thingy that all niggled warnings to me that this could go to fantasyland in a heartbeat in that first chapter.
I read on.
It's a Christmas short, so I was pretty sure a HEA was at the end, some holes in a story can be forgiven ;) Those holes are the reason for only rating it 3.5 stars.
Because this author gave me Alexander Hunt, the 8th Duke of Berresford. He seemed a bit of an opportunistic cad at first, until he defended our heroine's words in front of his peers! Bam. Damn. Game on. And then he took responsibility for his past...and gave Adriana and Georgiana a future. *Swoonworthy*

My rating for the duology is 4.5 stars.
Well worth it to add to your library!

This dualogy features two Christmas short stories. Delilah Marvelle's story, Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson, involves a secret admirer and a reunion. I loved the hero in this one. He's slightly younger than the heroine, a little lonely, and determined once he gets a sort of second chance with the heroine. I would've liked to have had the heroine's intimate insecurities explored a bit more. They seemed resolved a little too easily. Otherwise, it's a very sweet romance. 4 stars

The second story, The Twelve Days of Seduction by Màire Claremont had a really good beginning and end. The hero and heroine have a great physical connection. There is a lovely bond between the hero, the heroine, and the hero's young daughter. And it was nice seeing that bond strengthen throughout the story, especially between the hero and his child. But I think I needed more beyond the physical and the bond with the child to make the story more enjoyable for me. I needed more seduction. 3 stars

The first book in the special edition was by Delilah Marvelle, "Merry Christmas Mrs. Robinson". This is my first read of Ms Marvelle's work. I love the way she creates the characters and sets the scenes. Very detailed and well written. This book is about friends to lover and about second chances. Although the story was part of a novella , I didn't feel cheated ~ well done. The second book, The Twelve Days of Seduction by Maire Claremont was a heartwarming tale of a governess falling for her ward's father. A woman who's heart has been awakened, could she really find a Happy Ever After.

4.0 for Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle. The secret admirer theme was sweet, and the hero's pursuit of the hereoine and then especially love from his perspective was all very charming. 2.0 for The Twelve Days of Seduction By Màire Claremont. I found the story forced and crammed full of emotional, cliche-filled, convenient interactions between the characters.

Two Christmas romances, both featuring Dukes as the heroes. You'd think that these stories would be similar, but beyond that superficial detail, they're not.

The Twelve Days of Seduction by Màire Claremont starts with one of the classic themes, the governess who falls for her employer. Of course, the author adds more layers onto that trope. The governess also falls for her charge, the Duke's somewhat willful daughter. And she also falls for the whole gig. She wants to be part of a family, because she never was. Adriana Flint definitely bootstrapped herself up from the underclass.

When the Duke of Berresford discovers that she isn't what she seems, he should give her the sack. What he wants is to finally take her to bed. Because all the things that were forbidden when she was his daughter's prim and proper governess are not forbidden if he fires her.

Adriana wants to stay. She loves the child, she loves being part of a family. She might even love Alex, her Duke. But the trick is to get him to let her stay long enough to let him convince himself that she's the right woman for him. Not as his mistress, but as his duchess.

I found this story to be quite entertaining, and very sensual, but it did break the willing suspension of disbelief quite a bit even though it had lots of Christmas spirit. Maybe it would take the Ghost of Christmas Present to make this one come true.

Escape Rating for The Twelve Days of Seduction by Màire Claremont: B-

The first story in this duology is Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle. The story gets off to a slightly rocky start, but turns out to be an absolute polished gem by the end.

Lady Jane takes to the stage, and leaves the life she should have had behind in favor of the glittering world of being a singing sensation. While it might not be the same as being Lady Gaga in our time, Lady Jane has a musical gift that carries her beyond singing in drawing rooms for a few friends, think of Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes' A Scandal in Bohemia. She has a major talent, and a need to share it.

But Ladies don't sing on stage.

She has a secret admirer, a man who sends her beautiful letters, every night, letters that reveal his understanding of her true spirit. But she never knows his name. The man she marries claims to be the mysterious Mr. X turns out to have been stealing the letters to read in advance so he could pretend to be the man she loved but had never met.

When confronted with the truth, her husband has a stroke and dies instantly, leaving her a young widow, cut off from society.

Years later, she ekes out a living giving music lessons, unwilling to sing, unwilling to return to her family hat in hand, when a friend from her youth comes to her boarding house.

Martin Pierce has recently become the Duke of Somerset. He's discovered that his great-aunt, cut off from his family long before he was born, is living out her remaining years in that boarding house.

And is surprised beyond all belief to find Lady Jane. Surprised, stunned, relieved. Gobsmacked, although that term hadn't been invented yet.

Because when Lady Jane sang on the stage, she was in her early 20s, and Martin Pierce was a 17-year-old boy painfully in love with her. He was the real Mr.X. He loves her still.

Now that they are both adults, the five-year gap in their ages is immaterial, but the difference in their status suddenly looms very large. As does his secret.

Can they start over? Should they? Martin is no longer the shy boy he once was, and he knows that he has to try.

Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson turned out to be utterly marvelous. Lady Jane's pride was painfully well drawn, as was the spritely character of Martin's aunt, Lady Ernastine. She's a gem. Watching Martin take charge of his life is beautiful and powerful to watch.

"Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson" by Delilah Marvelle ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Jane Robinson, formerly known as Lady Jane before she decided to become an opera singer, has just married the man she thought she fell in love with. She was cut off by her family for doing so. During Twelfth Night, only a couple of weeks after they married, she find out that her beloved Mr. X was not the man she married. After an argument that ends up in her new husband's unexplained death, Mr. X stops writing.

Eight years later, Martin Pierce, the sixth Duke of Somerset has found his estranged elderly aunt and wants to take care of her. Lo and behold! The woman he fell in love with years ago is living in the same building. This could be his chance to show her that he is no longer a timid boy but a man who will stop at nothing to finally be able to make her his own.

Jane can't believe she is attracted to Martin. They'd been friends and he would always be that boy she spent time with. But hel-lo! He's got the rock hard body of a grown man and is no longer that timid boy. Martin tries his best to make Jane see that they're meant to be together and what better time for miracles than Christmas?

Favorite Quote:

She paused from her patting, noting the arm beneath his great coat was rather well muscled. That was new.

Overall: Every time Delilah Marvelle releases a book, I am in awe and in love with her writing all over again. This novella is fast paced with a side of naughtiness that will have your cheeks blushing a holly berry red and it will make you believe in the magic second chances during the holiday season.

"The Twelve Days of Seduction" by Máire Claremont ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Adriana Flint is the governess of the Duke of Berresford's ward and she's about to be let go because of her unsavory past. She's formed a close bond with her ward and isn't going to go without a fight. The Duke doesn't trust her but knows that bond between governess and child is strong. He's not that heartless so he makes a proposition.

Adriana would become his mistress. She agrees only if he seduces her for twelve days. It's no hardship for him. How hard could it be? His heart would not be involved in this. But he is wrong. Something about Adriana calls to him. There's more to this woman than nights spend between the sheets or stolen moments behind closed doors.

After being subjected to the title of Queen of Christmas by Alex's guest, Adriana thinks twice about falling for Alex. She knows that Alex is trying to keep her by his side but the veiled cruelty of the guests makes her think twice about allowing herself to hope for a future with Alex. She refuses to let her past hang over Alex and his ward and decides that the seduction might have been a bad idea.

With the threat of Adriana leaving them forever, Alex must convince her that the twelve days of seduction could be something more.

Favorite Quote:

It was Christmas. And in his experience, Christmas was the time for strange gifts and magical happening. For such a thing to happen on such a day, he wouldn't throw this path away. no, it was unfolding for some veiled reason.

Overall: Where can I get a Duke to seduce me for twelve days? This novella is sexy and angsty with a touch of sweetness. It's always a make or break when bringing children in the story but Ms. Claremont made it work. If this heart wrenching, laugh inducting, sigh worthy holiday story is a glimpse of Ms. Claremont's full book coming out in February (The Dark Lady), we're all in for a treat.

Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle - 3.5 stars

Lady Jane left behind a life of privilege when she defied her father, the Earl of Chadwick, to become an opera singer. She was courted for months by letters from a mysterious Mr X but two weeks after marrying the man she thought was the letter writer she discovered she had been deceived. The Duke of Somerset Martin Pierce was childhood friends with Jane and despite being five years younger than her he had fallen madly in love. Unable to get past his crippling shyness he used letters as a way of telling her how he felt but he was devastated when she married someone else and he immediately left the country rather than watch her in the arms of another man. Now that he is back from his travels and has discovered that Jane is free again he is determined to finally make her his.

This was a very sweet friends to lovers story that I really enjoyed reading, it was the first time I've read anything by Delilah Marvelle but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for her books in the future. Jane and Martin had a special friendship as children and Martin's feelings quickly developed into more. Jane never really looked at him as more than a friend because of the age difference between them but she missed his friendship dreadfully when he left to go travelling and didn't even say goodbye. They have both changed a lot in the years since they last saw each other, Martin has gone from an incredibly shy seventeen year old to a confident man who knows how to get what he wants from life. Jane on the other hand has gone from being a social butterfly who was full of confidence to someone who is wary of having her heart broken again and who prefers to spend her time out of the limelight. Can Martin's love help her regain her confidence or will she see his actions in the past as yet another betrayal of her trust?

The Twelve Days of Seduction by Maire Claremont - 4 stars

Adriana has had a difficult life but she has clawed her way out of the gutter and worked incredibly hard to become a respectable governess to the Duke of Berresford's young ward. For the last year she has been living a dream and she loves young Georgiana like a daughter but she knows everything will come crashing down around her if Alex ever finds out about her past. Alex is livid when he finds out that Adriana has deceived him and no longer feels he can trust her to raise an innocent child. Rather than throw her out just before Christmas he decides to make her an offer, since he has always been attracted to her he decides to act on that and make her his mistress but only on the condition that she stays away from his ward. Adriana knows this is an opportunity she can't afford to pass up, especially when she has always admired Alex from afar, but she can't bring herself to leave Georgiana and is determined to find a way to persuade Alex to let her keep her role as governess.

I really enjoyed Maire Claremont's story, the way Alex sets about seducing Adriana was romantic but also very sexy and I found myself laughing out loud at the banter between them. I think what I liked most was the way Alex comes to respect her for the woman she has become in spite of her horrible childhood. It wasn't easy for her to make something of herself after everything she has been through but she has never wanted sympathy, just a chance to prove herself. They make a great couple, especially since he is so prepared to stand by her no matter what anyone else thinks. I also enjoyed their interactions with Georgiana and the way Adriana helps Alex become closer to his ward. This was a perfect Christmas treat and it has left me incredibly excited about Maire Claremont's debut novel The Dark Lady which will be published early in 2013.

Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle

The story is about a secret admirer too young and shy, for the woman Jane, he has fallen in love with. Unable to approach her with his feelings he writes her beautiful, passionate letters. He signs them only as Mr. X. She responds, falls in love, and is determined to marry only Mr. X.

Jane is fooled by Mr. Robinson into thinking that it was he that wrote the letters and happily marries him, thinking he's her Mr. X. On the twelfth night of Christmas his brother tells her of her husbands duplicity. She confronts him and he falls down dead from a heart attack. If you ask me the turd deserved it...

After said unfortunate accident she withdraws from the public and moves to a poorer neighborhood. Where once she was a famed opera singer and defamed daughter of one of the ton*, she is now a singing teacher living across the hall from her Mr.X's aunt. Still, she doesn't know who Mr. X was and now sees herself as cursed, due to the unfortunate death of her deceptive husband.

Martin Nicholas Pierce, the sixth duke of Somerset has found is long lost great aunt....and the love of his life. Where he once was a shy intellectual, he is now hella-sexy and confident. He is now determined to reclaim his love, but will she give in?

Loved this story! I only wish it had been a little longer and a little more in-depth. But that is why it is a short story, and I still enjoyed it immensely. Martin was tasty hot. Jayne is a tough little nut. And studies seem to be a great place for getting to know each other intimately =)

*The ton is a term commonly used to refer to Britain’s high society during the Georgian era, especially the Regency and reign of George IV. It comes from the French word meaning "taste" or "everything that is fashionable" and is pronounced the same way as tone ([tɔ̃] in French). The full phrase is le bon ton, meaning good manners or "in the fashionable mode" – characteristics held as ideal by the British ton.

The Twelve Days of Seduction By Màire Claremont

Adriana Flint, authoress (shocking) and unclaimed granddaughter of the Earl of Marlowe, grew up in the wrong neighborhood. Her parents disillusioned drunks, she is sent to a boarding school to learn proper manners by her mother's "friend", so that once she returned she could be a courtesan of the ton, hopefully. Taking matters into her own hands, unable to live off of what she makes as an author, she recreates herself into Miss Grey. She duplicitously gains a job with the Duke of Berresford as governess to his ward (illegitimate daughter) Georgiana.

Alexander, Duke of Berresford, has been attracted to his governess from the moment he had hired her. A year later, he follows her to her publishers and from there has her background looked into. Finding that she is not who she has said she was he is determined to now gain her for himself. He offers her a place as his mistress. Adriana counters with a challenge of her own, before she will capitulate, hoping to remain near Georgiana, the charge she has grown to love.

Once again loved this too! Great characters! Alexander, totally tasty. Adriana, more and better then Alexander expected.

The line that made me actually laugh out loud and had my kids looking at me weird...

Finally, he'd tracked her down in one of the upper hallways. When She'd spotted him, her gaze had narrowed and, if he had been a lesser man, his balls would have withered.

Fab Christmas read!

Have a Duke for Christmas, would you?

There are two fun historical Christmas romances in this book.

Story 1 - Lady Jane gives up her life to pursue her dream singing opera. Then, she falls in love with a certain Mr. X. That right there got me into the story. She exchanges love letters with Mr. X until he supposedly comes forward and asks her to marry him. Soon, she discovers she married the wrong Mr. X, except now it's too late because when she confronts her husband, he has a heart attack.

She goes in hiding after that, never believing in love again. Well, that is until someone from her past appears in her life again. Now, figure who the real Mr. X is.

This was a pretty fun read. It was almost a clean romance if you ask me. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it even though I like a little more spice in my reads.

Book 2 - Adriana lives in hiding as a governess to a Duke's daughter. She thinks her secret is safe until the Duke discovers her true identity. She doesn't want to leave but she doesn't really have much choice unless she strikes a bargain with her boss the Duke. In the bargain, she discovers there's much more to lose than just letting people know who she really is. She can lose her heart.

This was another fun read. Yes, another clean romance. Very enjoyable read.

Blurb:

Two ladies.

★★★☆☆ Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle

I quite enjoyed this holiday romance! It's chock full of tropes that I enjoy: friends to lovers, second chances, secret identity, and older woman with younger man. Jane fell in love with the charming and mysterious Mr. X over letters, and wed who she thought was the man behind the moniker. Unfortunately, she had been duped. Her husband only wanted her as a prize, since she was a famed opera singer. When he unexpectedly died, she gave up her life of fame and entered a life of solitude. Then, her best friend from adolescence returns to town after claiming his title. Of course, Martin is the real Mr. X and he plans to reveal himself, because it's never too late for true love.

While I did adore everything happening in this novella, something was missing for me. I can't quite pinpoint what it is though. Despite its short length, it felt like a complete story. I liked the characters and believed their feelings for each other, but maybe that spark wasn't there? I never felt fully drawn into them, I suppose. Sure, I did want them to get their happily ever after, but I wasn't actively rooting for them, if that makes sense. This was definitely a cute romance though.

★★★★★ The Twelve Days of Seduction by Maire Claremont

I do believe I enjoyed this one even more the second time around! It's still only a nearly perfect novella, because I still want it to be a full length novel! The duke’s seduction of his governess was over far too quickly. It was delicious, tortuous, and should have been dragged out more! But I'm rounding my rating up, because I love it! Alexander Hunt is ready to throw his daughter’s governess out into the snow when he learns that she’s not who she said she is. Ana Grey is really Adriana Flint, an authoress from a poor family. However, the discovery of her identity is just an excuse, since Alexander wants her in his bed. He proposes that she become his mistress instead. Adriana has a proposal of her own: he has twelve days to seduce her, or else she gets to stay as governess. Game on!

Of course, Alexander and Adriana have to fall in love. Her seduction was much more than a sexual feat. It made the duke look at her as more then what she can provide for him. He even started considering the rest of his staff as people rather than just servants to be commanded. But the actual seduction was great, too! Alexander and Adriana are sizzling! They definitely did not make it the full twelve days, and Adriana’s position at the end also changed. It all just moved way too fast. I did get teary eyed in the epilogue, because the duke’s small heart grew three sizes that day. The Twelve Days of Seduction is a fabulous story and left me wanting more (both times)!

Merry Christmas Mrs. Robinson - Delilah Marvelle
It isn't often that I've read a historical romance where the hero isn't an alpha male. It took some getting used to and by the time I did get used to it, the story was over and I was left wanting more!

Lady Jane is a dreamer but the harsh realities of life soon come crashing in. She is a bit of a martyr, punishing herself in some ways for the mistakes of her youth and in the beginning unwilling to take the chance of being happy with Martin. Though life didn't turn out the way she originally planned, Jane is still a kind, intelligent woman. She has a soft spot for the young boy she once considered her best friend, but has trouble reconciling that boy with the man he has become.

Martin, even though an adult, still has moments of feeling and reacting like the insecure, and in some ways submissive boy he was when he first met Jane. It isn't only Jane's insecurities he must overcome but his own as well. He definitely took some getting used to, but he is a sweet, noble and determined man.

This story is about taking risks, some don't work out and some do and that's the point, if people don't take risks throughout their lives, how will they ever have the chance of being happy.

Merry Christmas Mrs. Robinson is a sweet story about how sometimes the best friendships can become something greater if given the chance.

The Twelve Days of Seduction - Maire Claremont
The Twelve Days of Seduction is a steamy, seductive holiday treat that I thoroughly enjoyed. A romance styled in the way of The Twelve Days of Christmas is something I hadn't heard of. Alexander and Adriana sizzle from the moment readers are introduced to the pair. There's such chemistry between the two and it makes The Twelve Days of Seduction such a joy to read.

Adriana is an admirable woman. She was born into a difficult life and has endured more than her fair share of hardships but she has managed to survive while still maintaining her dignity and beliefs. She isn't afraid to go toe-to-toe with Alexander, Duke or not.

Alexander is used to getting his way but it isn't long before he realizes Adriana isn't a female to be intimidated by him or his titles. Even when he knows he's way in over his head, he doesn't back down from the challenge Adriana issues. The result? A passionate story about two lonely souls who find love during the Holidays.

All I Want for Christmas is a Duke is one anthology worth reading, and just in time for the holidays too. I look forward to reading more from Delilah Marvelle and Máire Claremon soon.

A cute Christmas historical romance. Both novellas in All I Want for Christmas is a Duke were adorable!

Both heroines were a delight. Lady Jane has had to live in poverty because of a mistake for 8 years and that has made her strong. She's disillusioned with love, but, when the right man comes along, she knows to take the chance.
Adriana has had a terrible past, as well, and come through it strong. She's determined and not afraid to fight for what she wants and believes in. Both women were wonderful leads.

The heroes were just as wonderful. Martin was a sweetheart. Oh my god, will he melt your heart. Shy as a boy, he's done his best to overcome his father's demeaning influence. Though, he grew and overcame, he was still a sweet darling of a man that will claim your heart with ease.
Alexander was just as lovely, though in a different way. Where Martin was shy and uncertain, Alexander was confident and commanding. But he was still just as sweet and lovable, especially when he came to the defense of Adriana and his ward. Both men were amazing.

The relationship between the couples had a lot of depth.
Jane and Martin were friends from their youth, best friends, in fact. Jane was 5 years older than Martin, but Martin still loved her, even from that early on. Of course, Jane's marriage to who she though was her secret admirer pulled them apart. But, with both of them available again, things are bound to get interesting. Those two were so sweet together. And they definitely had some chemistry between them that led to some spice.
Adriana and Alexander has the hotter relationship. Since they met, they were attracted to each other, but it wasn't until the challenge that they acted on it. Though their relationship seemed to be based on lust, they were in love and were very sweet together.
Both couples were adorable.

Both plots were interesting with perfect happy endings.
All I Want for Christmas is a Duke was a delightful holiday romance. Andy romance lovers will adore this anthology.

A Christmas anthology about English historical romances about second chances and new love.

Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson by Delilah Marvelle
Second chances romance with a much younger Hero, Martin Nicholas Pierce, the Sixth Duke of Somerset who has always loved his childhood best friend, Lady Jane, the daughter to the Earl of Chadwick. So they grew up and were friends until she started recieving letters from a Mr. X and she fell in love and was tricked into thinking someone else was Mr. X when it was always her best friend (although five years younger) Martin. So they get a second chances eight years later just before Christmas. Very cute and well written and it really didn't have to be any longer then the short story it is. There is lots of miscommunication and silence which explains why it takes eight years to fix all the trouble.

The Twelve Days of Seduction By Màire Claremont

Alexander Hunt, Eighth Duke of Berresford has researched the past of his ward's governess, Miss Flint. So he really likes and respects Adriana Flint, so he will protect her by making her his mistress. But she challenges him to seduce her for the Twelve Days of Christmas which is a cute little theme in the chapters although there is only a few days passing this this story about finding love and the safety of family. The 'ward' has a crippled leg and it actually the illegitimate daughter to Alexander, but that is just assumed from the beginning because most 'wards' that look like the guardian at that time was the way to make respectable a bastard child without anyone looking too far into who the parents actually are. Another cute romance with smart people that find respect and love at the same time.

Merry Christmas, Mrs. Robinson / Delilah Marville: What a fun story? Jane left her home to pursue her dream of being an opera star. While she had many admirers Mr. X was the one she loved. Only through letters did they communicate until she finally met him and married him-only she didn't. He faked being Mr. X. When Jane confronted him he had an apoplexy and died. 8 years later she no longer is on stage, rather she is teaching and living in a small town.
Martin is a childhood friend, a few years younger, but a man now. He was the real Mr. X but stopped writing when she married. His aunt is Jane's neighbor and when Martin finds out he want to renew their friendship- and eventually the love they both still feel.

The Twelve Days of Seduction / Maire Claremont: Anna Grey was an imposter. For a year she has been a governess to Georgiana, the Duke's illegitimate daughter, but she is also Adriana Flint, an author of novels about people living in poverty in London. The Duke fins out and in order to keep her position to stay with the little girl she loves and her beloved Duke, she agrees to be his mistress. The tables turn and Alexander falls in love with her.

This is two short stories in one novel, written by two authors, so I would like to review them separately.

Marvelle's short piece was cut, but rushed. Still, she managed to make a fun little quirk of a story. Her characters had severe rough streaks - it was an interesting tale for a short story, I think it worked quite well.

The other story, by Claremont, however, didn't strike me well. Although it was longer so it offered more time for development, I felt it was choppy and confusing. Each chapter took the characters to a different level, but without the proper flow in between. It felt incredibly forced and just... I found myself rolling my eyes more than once. It was as though Claremont had a couple of scenes in her head she had always wanted to us but never was able to fit into any of her other stories so she threw them together.

If the length of the stories had been reversed, I think I would have liked it more. As it is, the bad story takes up most of the book. It's only 99 cents on BN.com, though, so it's not a bad on to pick up just for the quick read.
