Me – I read this really awful book last night & I want to do a video review. I wrote a script & everything *waves script in air*. What do you think?
D – How much coffee have you had this morning Mum … *glances at clock* it’s like 9 in the sodding morning!
Me – Hush … I’ve had a couple or three cups but that’s not the point … what do you think about the video review?
S - *has been reading script* Oh. My. God. There was a horse & a werewolf???
Me – I know right? How frickin’ awesome! It was awful.
D – Looks at S & mouths What. The. Fuck?
S - *sardonic eyebrow lift*
Me - *grabs script* Look D … I pictured you as the werewolf … we’ll paint your mouth with tomato sauce & you can come in this door with an anguished look on your face saying “Jonah…” you need to look deeply into his eyes yeah? “Jonah…I want you so bad but my wolf sees you as prey…” then you need to put the back of your hand on your forehead like damsel in distress & stagger around like you’re anguished…
D – Stagger around like I’m anguished?! Seriously?
Me - *turning to S who starts to look slightly alarmed* You’ll be the horse shifter S…
S – does that mean I have a big dick?
D & Me - *blink blink* ewww
S - *blush*
Me – Look S … while D is being all anguished you have to look longingly at D & say “I love you Cole but I don’t know if I’m strong enough to stay…” then you need to swoon like a…
Jonah is a horse shifter and has a very bad home life his brother is an abusive homophobic asshat and his stepdad is even worse. His mother...I don't even want to start what I think of her. Jonah at 18 asked Cole, the man and half wolf-shifter to give him a job so he could get away from his family, but Cole wanted Jonah so much he didn't want to risk having him around. I really try to sympathize with Cole here, but can't muster any! Anyway Jonah disappears shortly after that conversation, fast forward a year and Cole rescues an abused horse and takes him home, low and behold..it's Jonah. Here I got a little frustrated first Jonah refuses to go into Cole's house after he changes back, because he doesn't want to risk being seen, umm..there are a lot of ways around that, wait till it's dark, Cole goes and gets a coat or a bag and covers him and takes him to the house...whatever, but remember you can lock a door to a house or a room, but no, they stay in the barn and have sex..yep, no risk there. anyway they do finally get to the house and .....the story continues bad big brother and cronies harass and try and harm them, so Jonah being all noble keeps saying he needs to leave to protect Cole and the others and Cole keeps getting him to stay. That is just a personal thing I have, this back and forth, I need to leave ...but I can't, I have to leave to protect you...but you want me to stay..I need to leave...it isn't safe..but the sex is so good..well, you get the point, it just grated on my nerves.
I did like the set up that everyone seemed to know about shifters and it wasn't a big deal, so it was nice enough story but I had my niggels.
It’s like a gay cowboy train wreck I can’t look away from.
WTF did I just read.
It's giving Wattpad. And I've read some Wattpad I enjoyed and was totally addicted to. This is giving teenager writing Wattpad. The characters are ridiculously over the top and inexplicably immature. The premise of a horse and wolf shifter really drew me in but the writing is so bad and the story moves so ridiculously fast like a bad soap opera you can almost hear the fake actor style gasps from here when a character does something stupid. Look, maybe it's because it's so old. Maybe if I'd read it when it first came out.... maybe. Because lord knows I do love me some trash reading. But this is not it.
I have to admit that short little books like this are not usually my thing. I find that with anything less than 200 pages just doesn't have enough depth or back story, for me personally. But I was very pleasantly surprised by this story. I think it's because I was in the mood for something sweet and light, but sexy at the same time, Finding Release was perfect for that.
I found that I connected nicely with the main characters, Cole and Jonah. I wanted to get to know them both better and to learn more about their past, but that doesn't happen as much in short stories like this. You are told just enough about them that they aren't complete strangers, but you have use the little bits of information you do get to piece the rest together yourself, which is fine.
I loved Jonah's story and the way Cole helped him heal, to realise that he is perfect just the way he is, no matter what his despicable family might tell him.
Cole is amazing. He's so strong, confidant and willing to help Jonah, no matter what. He stands by Jonah's side through thick and thin.
"They already talk about me. I'm a gay, half-breed werewolf horse trainer. Hell, I'd talk about me too. I don't give a damn about any of it."
There's also such a vulnerable, caring side to him at the same time.
'Tears stung the backs of his eyes, but he would not fucking cry. He would hold himself together. Jonah deserved that. "You can say anything to me. I'm here for you now."
I wanted something sexy to read and believe me I wasn't disappointed. Silvia Violet knows how to write incredible chemistry and wonderful but also realistic sex scenes.
I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read more by Silvia Violet.
This story intrigued me for the simple reason that it combined a werewolf and a horse shifter. Such an unlikely combination that I found a little bit hard to accept... it just seemed odd. But then again, if I thought a wolf shifter was okay, why not a horse?
Anyway, parking the fact I couldn't get over the horse thing, the story was quite enjoyable. Young man (the horse) comes to the older man (the wolf) for help but gets rejected resulting in him experiencing a year of pain. But Cole has a chance to redeem himself when he rescues Jonah and brings him to the ranch.
Together they face their demons - Cole faces his own fears about his wolf taking over and Jonah faces his homophobic, shifter-phobic brother. Throw in a bit of sex and it wasn't a bad way to spend some time this afternoon.
I bet you saw, as a kid, a very sad and heartbreaking movie with a horse... That broken its leg.. And they had to shoot it and put the horse down.
If the horse was the guy of this book I would grab that gun and shoot it myself. And smile doing it. Or I would invite the horse shifter to visit Italy... And end up on a dinner table (in Italy horse meat is eat... Not by me. I never even try it... For me is like "NOOOO POOOR HORSE" feeling so I never try it)
I can't say in words how much both protagonists annoyed me. Both. This story certainly is not for me.
Giving up. 60% read. I will give a rating to remember why I didn't finish it, and to don't ever again try it
I found the romance sweet. Once they got together I swooned a few times. It just didn't impress me like other books have. I would give this 3.5 stars for the romance alone. I really liked this couple. :)
I'd read this before, what feels like forever ago, and gave it 3 stars, but didn't write down why. Me, today, still agrees with past me's opinions.
Pros: a cool "some people are shifters and some aren't but the shifters are like a social minority instead of a secret" concept. Also, the general plot is interesting
Cons: there is a lot of sexy times oftentimes hiding the general plot, and kind of padding down half the story at least. And (while I think it was edited down from the first edition that I read a while ago) Cole has a thing kind of for Jonah being young and a virgin a I found it icky. Cole also has some moments where he even feels gross with himself for wanting an 18 year old. Ick
DNF @ 26% And yes I'm still rating it because, wow, it was just that bad.
The whole "oh woe is me my inner wolf is so evil and bad I cannot control myself" started to annoy me in the prologue already and from there onwards it just got worse. Also, no exposition whatsoever on how the whole shifter thing worked. And it was "werewolf" but "horse shifter"? I just found the distinction confusing. Why not wolf shifter or werehorse for consistency?
An adult character lusting after a teen to the point of being afraid they would not be able to hold back already squicked me out, but to then a year later find that teen again, abused to almost death, and start making out immediately was just... nope. It stopped before going past kissing, and I decided to give the book one last chance. But just a few minutes later full on sex happened, where it also turned out that the teen had no previous sexual experience, and wanted to stop before penetrative sex, but those concerns were brushed aside with a "I won't hurt you" followed by an internal "oh but you shouldn't because I'm an EVIL WOLF" and that was it for me.
I'm sad because the combination of wolf and horse and cowboys and animal rescue sounded amazing, but the delivery, execution, and simply the choices this story made was just a huge N O P E.
Buddy read with Isaiah. Sorry, I just don't have it in me to finish this. I'm impressed you managed and wrote such a high quality review about it.
Before reading: I'm a simple guy, I see werewolf cowboy and horse shifter, I hit "buy".
My Review: Shifter stories...I love them, but this is my first horse shifter and I liked the dichotomy between the two men...horse and wolf and how everything about their relationship goes against their animal instincts. But they work.
Not only are the animal half's at odd, but the men are too. Jonah is young...only 18 when the story begins and compared to Cole's mid-thirties, Cole doesn't think he has any right to chase after Jonah. No matter how much he wants to. But he pays for that decision when Jonah disappears for a year and when he comes back abused and terrified, Cole can't refuse him anymore.
Despite what should be a fairly dominant Cole simply because of his age and circumstance, I liked that Jonah is his own man. Never, besides just at first, did I feel like he was the younger, less dominant man. He pushes back against Cole when he doesn't like Cole's decisions. That made this dichotomy work for me when I don't think it would have otherwise. These guys have a true partnership and I liked that about their relationship.
I also really enjoyed the entire horse ranch setting. It's an interesting twist to have a wolf shifter owning a horse ranch because the horses are so skittish around him...with the obvious exception of Jonah.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and the setting. There were a few moments when the dialogue got a little too sugary and it pulled me out of the story, but I could overlook those for the most part. I liked the two main characters and a lot of the side characters on the ranch. It was definitely worth the read.
I though t this was going to be a good book, 2 shifters (horse & werewolf) but sadly that was not the case. Cole is a werewolf who wants Jonah so much because he believes him too young. that he turns him away when he pleads for a job. Jonah is a horse shifter who was "locked" into his animal form by his brother. Sold and tortured. IMO Jonah gets over his ordeal way to fast and jumps in bed with Cole. This story just doesn't have a true ring to it for me.
I had high hopes for this one having both shifters and cowboys in it, unfortunately the story just fell flat for me. For me I just couldn't connect with the main characters.
Finding Release is the first book in the Wild R Farm series. It was originally released back in 2012 under the author’s Silvia Violet pen name, and has now been re-released under the new paranormal pen name of Silvia Onyx. Onyx notes that the book has been “re-edited and updated” from the original, but it is not clear how much has changed between versions in terms of the story itself. I liked the set up here with a horse shifter, which is rare enough to find in romance, but then the added element of him paired with a wolf shifter added a nice twist. There is a predator/prey dynamic between the shifters, so it makes an interesting pairing. I liked the way that Jonah, despite being younger and more vulnerable after suffering such abuse, is able to also help Cole as he deals with managing the wolf side of his nature. Jonah has more experience shifting, so he can guide Cole at various points, which was a nice element to the story. Jonah is a sweet character and I really felt for him and enjoyed seeing him find happiness with Cole, as well as being able to move past the threats from his brother.
Note to Self: 1) Be sure to check out your GR Friend's reviews before choosing a book. 2) Remember to listen to the sample before choosing an audio; just because you like a narrator in another book/series does not mean you will like every performance.
3.5 stars This reminded me a lot of The Tin Star, just with the addition of shifters to the plot. I enjoyed this, and I thought the way Jonah and Cole were reintroduced to each other was very interesting . It was difficult to tell at first if this world was open or closed. There was no indication until pretty far in that the general population knew about shifters, so that could have been a little clearer. I could definitely feel the connection between Cole and Jonah, although things did progress a little quickly once they met up again. Some of the the conflict was glazed over and could have been a little more fully developed to bring up the tension, making this a full length. In a way this only shows us the good stuff, but sometimes we need the in between to get a fuller feel from the book.
I think this story had potential, especially with the existence of a drug that can lock shifters in their animal form and the fact that shifters seem to be a bit more open and integrated into society. I think a lot could be done with that. However, Finding Release was a miss for me. I found the dialog cheesy and Cole was rather overbearing, trying to make Jonah out to be a damsel in distress. Constantly. And Jonah constantly threatening to run away got tiring.
I gave this book a very generous 2.5 stars for having a unique concept (wolf/horse mates) and for running through spell check. Sweet romance with eye-rolling dialogue.
...but the brilliant idea was nearly obscured by gratuitous sex scenes that contributed little to character or plot development. Cole and Jonah are excellent and believable characters who could do with greater detail. Most of the others, particularly Jonah's family, are pretty thin and cardboard like.
