Trusting God When Bad Things Happen

Rate this book
When bad things happen, what is your reaction? Do you trust God even when you don't understand?

There was a dark season in my life when it literally felt like an earthquake had occurred. Everything in my life seemed to be falling apart...my family, my finances, our Church. And I asked God the simple question, "Why?" This book is the result of my own search for answers. In the end, God gave me illustrations that I will share with you and brought healing to my heart and my distorted view of Him. I was able to trust Him again, even though my circumstances had not changed.

I pray that God uses this short eBook to deeply impact you as well. I have included questions for reflection for you to go through individually or as a group.

"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I (Jesus) have overcome the world!" - John 16:33

"Life is Pain. Anyone who tells you differently is selling something."

This quote from The Princess Bride should also refer to Christianity. Just because you become a Christian does not mean that life will be perfect and care-free, and that you'll never trip or fall. Being a Christian just means that you'll have Someone there to help give you a hand up and console you if you hurt yourself, and someone who will point out certain potholes along the way and help to avoid them.

So if God is good...why does He allow bad things to happen?

The author uses personal experiences and scripture to help the reader understand the answer to this question. She uses plain English, so anyone can understand. This is a solid, biblically accurate and short read.

“Trusting God When Bad Things Happen” by Shelley Hitz is not a long book, but it has great potential to be a life-changing book. Calling on her own experiences of bad things happening, and how she learned to cope with tragedies by growing in her faith in God, Shelley has written a virtual cookbook on learning to trust in God and lean on Jesus. No one can read about her experiences and think “that wasn’t as bad as what I’ve gone through” or “maybe that works for her, but it won’t work for me”. She has written a book that is 100% biblical in its truths, and firmly founded on faith in God as her co-author. Shelley has a special place in her heart and soul for the trials and tribulations of teen girls, but the precepts in this book are by no means limited to just teen girls. Quite to the contrary, this short book is packed with a powerful message for everyone who faces uncertainty when “bad things happen”.

It’s not exactly unheard of that bad things happen. Look at today’s newspaper, and you will find ample evidence that something bad happened to a lot of people just since yesterday’s newspaper came out. If nothing bad has ever happened to you, reading this book will help to prepare you for that inevitable day when something bad will happen to you. If your life has been stricken by tragedy beyond your comprehension, reading this book will give you the tools and even the motivation to face and overcome that tragedy, whether or not you believe it possible to ever get through your situation. This book is a must-read for everybody. It won’t take much of your time, it won’t hurt you, and it will help you immensely if you keep your heart and mind open to its teachings.

I was given a free copy of this book by the author through LibraryThings, in exchange for an honest and impartial review.

The audience for this book is teenage girls, but it can be used for both genders and a variety of ages. It deals with the topic of sexual abuse and murder of a family member in a non-graphic manner.

This book is about healing of ones heart and mind. Ones journey towards wholeness. God the Healer as an intricate part of this journey presented in a heartfelt way, not in a religious way.

A good resource.

It's been a biblical perspective on obeying in times of tribulations. How well do you handle life's triumphs and trials?

My five stars is for an excellent biblical source of knowledge about handing yourself over to the Father when your surrounded by fire. Will you survive the flames ? God can see you through .

Very good read. I couldn't put the book down.

Thank you for a very good read about our Lord and Savior Jesus. Only thing I feel different about is the term "accepting Jesus". Jesus is already within us, we just have to acknowledge Him. Of course this is how I understand the interpretation of His word. Thanks again for a wonderful read. Blessings

Not scriptural

The author mentions the book shack and I had to stop reading. She believes in hearing God outside the Bible...which is wrong.

Hitz, Shelley (2014-01-06). Trusting God When Bad Things Happen. Body and Soul Publishing. Kindle Edition, also available as a real book.

Another magnificent book from Shelley Hitz, with input from her husband, CJ, at the final chapter. The first two lines hit the nail on the head. These two have an extraordinary ability to write it ‘as it is’, with a simplistic style, akin to that of the Master Himself, written so that all can understand. No jargon and no thesaurus or specialist dictionary required.

She uses her own horrific and tragic past as a palette to her struggle to find the answer to the ultimate question, why?

This is a book for everyone who has asked, why? It‘s also for those that haven’t been able to answer the question clearly and confidently enough to release those trapped in limbo by the events that try to destroy the individual and also those events that stun the world into silence and disbelief.

Please do not believe me, read it. Public Warning - this book could seriously change your life!

I do not know this author personally and have not been paid to write this review. I have, however, received a free Kindle edition of this book.

This book had positive and inspirational quotes, scriptures, and research knowledge in reference to the topics addressed per chapter. My favorite chapter was three, and enjoyed reviewing the charts on 4 views of God: benevolent, authoritative, direct, and critical. In this chapter, she also shares from Mark Virkler, his book, "How to hear from the voice of God" on those 4 areas (which my church did a lesson on this about 6 months ago and read the book).

This was a very short read via eBook (free) and she shares nearly half of the remaining of her book about her other books with excerpts, website contact information, and pictures.

It was an okay read (2.75).

This was a short book of encouragement for anyone going through tough times. Mostly, it was a challenge to pray and read your bible – that even in the midst of suffering, we should hold on to Christ and his promises. There was also some suggestions for how to start journaling through your struggles which some might find helpful.

The only thing I didn't particularly like was how short the book was. I was only at 60% or so in the e-book version when it said “In Closing.” I did a double take then. Huh? Shouldn't there be more? After the 60% mark, the rest of the e-book is just filled with advertisements/exerpts for Shelley and her husbands other books. So, to some degree, I felt like this book was cut short. Because of this, the ending just seemed a bit rushed. I wished she had shared a bit more and had less advertisements in the back.

When bad things happen, what is your reaction? Do you trust God even when you don't understand?

I received this ebook from Shelly and I have never heard of her but boy I loved this short book! I love how Shelly uses bible scriptures throughout the book and has questions for you to ask/answer. I found myself agreeing with her with so much and I really enjoyed reading this book.

I think we all have asked God why bad things happen to us or to others. I am like everyone else I have had many storms in my life but my faith in God and trusting His ways has gotten me through the roughest times I have been forced to face.

I think anyone that is going through a rough time will benefit from this book. I will be keeping this book on my Kindle and going to read it over and over again.

I received this book from Shelley in return for an honest review. Because my faith is very strong in GOD it is a little hard for me to give a fully objective review. I would have given this book 3.5 stars because i can see how it may help someone that is really struggling with their faith in GOD during bad times or period. It gives many references to scriptures in the bible and that reiterates that the bible is life's instruction book. I did enjoy the question answer format. More of that would be very instrumental for younger readers, however she does refer you back to her blog or website to read more and post your own.

JEsus warned us that we will have troubles in this world. Shelly Hitz knows this personally. She pens a thought-provoking, short, study on how we can learn and grow in the midst of these events; or even after these events that we may not be able to forgive. IT is a short 3-part study but packed with truth. The Chapter that describes the different views we have of God, moved me and spoke to my heart.

I recommend this study to everyone and especially to those who have gone through or are in their 'dark tunnel' right now. In fact, having some friends currently in that place, I will definitely point them in the direction of this study.

Trusting God When Bad Things Happen by Shelley Hitz is a discussion between a teacher or mentor and a student or disciple. Useful for Christians and seekers, the non-confrontational format guides the reader through a process of questioning that often occurs when a person is working through painful events.

Hitz shows that our view of God and the way we choose to respond to those who have hurt us, even if that person is God, determines our future. An excellent tool for encouraging dialog as it encourages hurting people to acknowledge the hurt and begin the healing process.

Trials will come

I found the short book was just the right amount of reading that I could do today. I liked the personal experiences that were included from both the author and the online person. She made me think about how I see God.

Good discussion on this ever present trouble. I've learned the hard way to not give God credit for the works of the one who comes to steal, kill and destroy.
