Rate this book
There is a secret society that presides over every world. This society is so powerful that it can control a nation, strike fear into the bravest of men and bring turmoil onto the most unsuspecting of victims...

There is a dangerous society in Seoul that is plaguing Choi Yoori.

Her world is turned upside down when she is told that she bears a strong resemblance to the “Queen of the Underworld,” a notorious Underworld crime lord who died 3 years prior—the exact same time Yoori woke up with amnesia. The dangers of this new world is crashing in on her and Yoori's only grip on stability lies with the guidance from her crime lord boss and the secrets the Queen of the Underworld hid from her powerful society.

Welcome to a world where “Gods” walk amongst humans. Where the heartless and vengeful are revered like Kings and Queens—and the weak, the distracted are punished without mercy.

It is a cruel world and once you’re in, the only exit is death.

“How can you make such a promise?” Yoori smiled sleepily before answering her own question. “Because you’re a King in this world?”
Tae Hyun smiled. “Because I am a God in this world – because they will all kneel before me soon. And when they kneel before me, I will have them fall to their knees for you as well.”

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD !!!

My first reaction after reading this book ...

To say I'm obsessed with this book and this author right now , would be putting things a wee bit too mildly ! I've googled my ass off trying to find a complete version of this story , but nope , my search has led me nowhere . That is probably due to the fact that it has been picked up by a publishing house ... silly me !

Alright , before I get on with this review , let me just give you guys some points that I digged out of my research ..

a) Welcome To The Underworld was originally a FANFICTION on a Korean fanfiction forum known as Soompi .

b) This is just the first part of the story , and true to its title , this book is the first step the readers take before they are plunged into the dark and dangerous world that Con Template has managed to create . Apparently its a pretty lengthy novel when it was first written . So there will probably be 3 or 4 books in the series to tie up the story !

c) The book has a huge fan following on Tumblr and Soompi ! The fact that it hasn't managed to create similar outrage here on Goodreads has tied me up in knots ! Well , somebody has to amend that soon ..

So , now that those points are out of the way , let me get on with this review !

Welcome To The Underworld is the story of Choi Yoori . Actually , to call it just Choi Yoori's story would be highly unfair . To put it out more clearly , WTTU deals with the Korean underworld or Kkangpae as they are commonly known as , along with Choi Yoori's story ... They are kinda interlinked together . Yoori's life takes a drastic turn when she accidently finds herself as a personal assistant of The king of Serpents .... Now before I progress forward , let me break down this 'underworld' for you a little . Basically , the underworld is ruled by 3 prominent kings or groups . The Skulls , The Scorpions and The Serpents . They are the ones with too much power and money . The ones who deal in the dark , the ones who are hidden from the outside world ! Yoori's one little mistake lands here up in the hands of Kwon Tae Hyun , the uber sexy , yet insanely dangerous King of the Serpents . He wants her to be his assistant , available to him 24/7 . Unfortunately for Yoori , things get more complicated than they already are . If being the King Serpents assistant wasn't enough , Yoori is also the look-alike of An Soo Jin , more commonly known as The Queen of the Underworld or The Scorpion Princess ! An Soo Jin was a feared , cold , heartless , merciless bitch who loved people torturing people . If you got on the wrong side of her book , then you better pray that death comes to you first , coz if the bitch gets her paws on you she'll make you beg for ... mercy ?? Nope , she'll make you beg for death !

But Choi Yoori isn't anything like her .. So who is Choi Yoori ? And what will be her contribution to this underworld ? Who are these gods they speak of ? Who will be the next god of the Underworld ? And what's in store for Choi Yoori and Tae Hyun ? You'll just have to find that out on your own !

Honestly speaking , this book was a complete surprise package . The underworld that Con Template has created in this book is beyond comprehension ! Their rules , morals , ethics are completely different from our world . And what's funny is that people who exist outside this world , are only so in the figurative term , Nobody , and I mean nobody goes unnoticed by them . We may not see them or have no idea of their power . But they seem to keep track of everything . Now , seeing that I'm just blabbering like a confused idiot , you must be wondering , Is this a paranormal fiction ?? Hell no , its not ! Its a contemporary fiction with a crimelord/mafia backdrop for a story ! But the characters , the plot line , and the setting is just freakishly good , that it manages to pull the reader right in from page 1 ! The twists and turns , the pace of the story is well built . Revelations are made , assumptions are shattered and decisions are made within a fraction of a second !

"Choi Yoori, if there's only one thing you need to know about our world, it is that everyone is trained to be killer, especially the ones born into it. It's a terrible thing but from birth, we were all raised to not only desire power but yearn for it. In this world, if you have no power, then you'll die a pitiful death."

THE CHARACTERS

Kwon Tae Hyun

"Some people know me as Kwon Tae Hyun but most other people know me as the King of the Serpents, the leader of one of the most notorious gangs in this country." He extended his hand out to her, the same amused smile layering his striking face.
"Choi Yoori, welcome to my world."

 photo JaeJoong-Hairstyle-Korean_zps38d7e70b.jpg

Oh boy , stop me from swooning over this guy !!! Tae Hyun is the King of the Serpents . Like I've mentioned before , the guy is devilishly handsome . He is scary too ! Respected and feared , he wont bat an eyelash before pulling a trigger to your head . But its his relationship that he shares with Yoori is what amazed me the most . Sweet , charming , overprotective and caring , the guy has got all the skillz needed in the making of an excellent boyfriend !!!

"You've had a motorcycle all along? Why did we walk around town for all those weeks then?"
He shrugged. "I don't know. Probably because it gave me an excuse to hold your hand as I show you off around town?"

Choi Yoori

 photo korean-wavy-hair-style_zps5810e39e.jpg

She is definitely one of the funniest female characters I've ever read . Your typical girl-next-door , Yoori is shy , coy and pretty much spineless ! I mean she never stands up for herself , atleast that's what she says . But damn the girl cracked me up with her 'confused-as-shit' act all the time ! Her funny banter with Tae Hyun were hilarious !

It was one thing to "seemingly" be Tae Hyun's girlfriend, but to be "seemingly" having sex with him? No matter how inappropriately tempting the thought, Yoori could never do that! She didn’t even know how to have sex. She paused. Okay that may not be true. She knew the mechanisms of how sex worked but it wasn’t like she has ever done it. She paused once more when she recalled her amnesia. Not that she knew of anyway.

Ji Hoon

Ugh , this guy is the probable cause of a 'may happen in the future' love interest ! I just hate him ... That is all ...

Photobucket

There are certain other characters as well , but that would be spoiling the story for you . So I'll just stop here .. for now !

THE ENDING ...

Cue - Seven Devils - Florence & The Machine

.... Is more like a beginning !!!! Lets just say , a war is in order . Atleast the predictions have predicted a war . A war for finding your place in this world ! A war for being crowned as the next GOD of this world !

That ending definitely left me ...

 photo cute-kpop-boys12_zpsab114b2e.gif

I mean , I just ...

 photo Icant_zpsaff2940a.gif

... Soooo many possibilities ... Soo many things to figure out !

Thankfully , stalking the authors Facebook has brought to light an awesome news ! Book 2 is officially in the hands of her editor right now .. Release date to be revealed shortly !!!!!!!!

 photo wewait_zps0da78393.gif

One of my fav scene from the book :

This happens when Yoori and Tae Hyun are making sleeping on the same bed arrangements .. You know , because they are handcuffed ..

"It makes sense now." He dramatically got off the bed and shook his head. "I thought it was strange how your eyes are always swelling up whenever you see me come out of the shower. Now, I know why."
Her face grew a darker shade of red. That was not true! She thought about it further. Well, it was true but he shouldn't point it out like that! Acting like she was some pervert who stalks around the room, waiting him to come sauntering out of the shower with his sexy naked upper body distracting her eyes. Yoori stopped when she realized that he may have a point. However, being the prideful fighter that she was, Yoori certainly wasn't going to let Tae Hyun win this game. She was not going labeled as some perverted fan girl!

And now we wait ...

I have heard nothing but rave for this series and the first book was an entertaining read. For the most part, that is. I like the concept and the setting; the characters are good (some more so than the others), but there are some things that weren't my favorites exactly.

I definitely think the writing can be improved on, for starters. I heard that this is actually a fanfic of some sort, so I guess this is self-explanatory. Also, this book is waaaaaaaaay too long, okay! It's 330 pages, but I'm wondering if the font is über small, because it's 8.3k locations on Kindle. The plot dragged a lot in some places and the inner monologue was so unnecessary in some parts, because 7/10 everything already been said a million times over before, so there is no necessity to repeat it time and time again. Hah, and there are A LOT of plot holes.

I found Yoori to be somewhat annoying at times? Like, gurl! Everyone and their brother (look at me, being punny!) keeps telling you that don't trust this person, yet you go on lunch dates with them and talk about how hot they are yada yada yada all the while the reader can see her warming up to another person who, being the actual love interest, has her best interests at heart. Most of the time at least. Like, you can't just trust everyone, okay? You're in the inner circles of maffia, you can't be so trusting and feel "affectionate" towards everyone you freakin' meet. It's more than annoying tbh. And, if that's not enough, she's super judgemental, which makes for a lot of drama since she jumps into her own conclusions about everything. More often than not she's proven to be wrong later.

HOWEVER, all of those things above aside, I GOT ADDICTED! It's not that this book is bad, I just think it's in the need of a lot of polishing. Welcome to the Underworld is like a darker kdrama and it is kinda ridiculous at times, but also entertaining and a tad emotional? (I ALSO GOT SOME MAJOR LOVE ME IF YOU DARE (a Chinese drama which you should all watch asap) VIBES AND THOSE PARTS HAD ME DYING FROM FEELS!!!!!) I can see myself getting super invested in the future hah. I even became somewhat protective over Yoori, though god knows she doesn't need it, because every. single. guy. is. trying. to. protect. her. lmao sounds fake but ok.

I think my rating reflects more that I had bigger hopes after all the raving I've heard, but regardless of everything, I'm addicted and eager to find out what happens next, beccause WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT LEFT OFF LIKE THAT???? I wish the second one wasn't so long as well, but I already one-clicked it this morning, so let's hope there's some progress on the parts where the first book lacked some. (I also read the prologue from Tae Hyun's POV for Fall of Gods and asdfghjklllllllll; I AM GONE ~bye~)

I really wanted to like this book, because everything about it screamed "me!" Plus, it was a rec from a good friend, so how could I not be excited? We get to see a vicious underworld, a resilient main character, and all across Korea - except all these things I was looking forward to weren't there.

From the beginning, I could tell that the writing would not work with me. Interestingly enough, it seemed like as the story progressed, it got a bit better. One thing was the dialogue between the characters. I abhor it when authors write dialogue IN ALL CAPS or WITH ALL CAPS AND AN EXCLAMATION POINT! It makes me feel like I'm reading about a raging lunatic with anger issues that's screaming from the top of their lungs. GOOD THING THE CAPS SPEECH STARTS DISAPPEARING AFTER A WHILE IN THE BOOK. I don't know about you, but reading over that sentence makes me hella uncomfortable. Aside from the weird dialogue, the sentences never seemed to flow and the plot was so convoluted and messy that I felt like I was watching a really, really bad kdrama. And that was only because of the character's names! Without those, I would have NEVER known that they were in Seoul.

Oh gosh, the setting. I thought I would see killer scenes in the Underworld, but those don't really happen in this book. At least ones that made an impact on me. Following that was the fact that although the story takes place in Seoul, we don't get much of a description of it at all. With all the talk of bacon, eggs, and ramen, I could almost believe that we were in America. That's right - you have a book IN Korea with NO mention of bibimbap, jajungmyun, or any of the yummy food that can be found there (sorry if I butchered the spelling of those foods). I'm unpleasantly surprised.

Worst of all, I think, were the characters in this book. Think of the top 10 idiotic and immature kdrama leads you can think of, mash them together, and you get Yoori. She likes to scream. She's immature. She's incompetent. She's foolish and runs towards danger, without thinking of the consequences. And of course, all the hot guys of the Underworld (which so happen to be the leaders, too) are halfway in love with her just after meeting her. Nothing about her cardboard personality made me believe that the romance had substance. Unless these mafia dudes really like idiotic characters who are tstl, because then she would be great for them. God, and all that yelling. It made my head hurt just from reading and imagining it.

The plot, like I said before, took improbable-ness to such a high degree, I couldn't take the story seriously after 20%. Here's what happens: girl spills coffee on guy. Guy threatens to sue the restaurant. Girl becomes his assistant, just casually LEAVES the restaurant with no one in it, and climbs into the car, and makes a deal by clinking glasses. Then she proceeds to run away two hours later. This either smells like a really, REALLY silly kdrama or webcomic, or a story that had minimal thought put into it before being written. When you combine those events with the inharmonious sentences, it really leaves a bad taste for the reader.

Well, at least it did for me. I'm not continuing with this series because I really don't care. The guy love interest was a stereotypical I'm-evil-but-I'll-protect-this-girl kinda dude that I really don't care for. I only skimmed the last 25% because I just couldn't force myself to read through the tiring passages anymore. This disappointed me both as a romance and as a book having to do with the mafia.

This is book is one of the amazing reads I had in a while AND that is saying something :-)

It made me laugh out loud (I'll explain in the spoilers), bite my nails in anxiety and just made me feel WTF in the end (I WANT MORE!!!!!)

Ehem, okay enough of that here's my review (WARNING MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)

Welcome to the Underworld, from the title it just got me instantly intrigued and I'm glad I wasn't disappointed it follows Choi Yoori an outspoken and a little clumsy girl who moved to Seoul when her family died in an accident but it is already heavily implied in the book especially the prologue who her real identity is and it was An Soo Jin the "Queen of the Underworld" known for her cruelty and charisma who allegedly "died" 3 years ago the same time Yoori awakened from a car accident and lost are memories. She meets or more accurately put accidentally bumps into Hunky Kwon Tae Hyun, leader of the Serpent gang, while working on her job as a waitress in a diner and was asked/blackmailed into becoming his assistant from this point forward hilarity ensues on how these two polar opposites relationship develops but then Soo Jin's lover Lee Jo Hii comes into the pictures and complicates the relationship further but in their world things are not always what it seems...(I'm ending it here guys just READ the book it's AWESOME)

Now the CONS there aren't many so here we go

First the character development of Jo Hii/Hee I just don't trust this character though the love triangle is nice for this story I just don't entirely buy that he truly loves Yoori/Soo Jin because he is a PLAYER!!!! (that just me of course)

Second the Underworld as it is portrayed is not fully fleshed out yet I know from the title "Welcome" that its just the tip of the iceberg but I just WANTED MORE ( sorry I'm greedy)

That's it told it was short

Okay now for the PROS

The main character Yoori/Soo Jin it is quite fascinating how a ruthless killer who doesn't flinch from death become a "human" in a sense when she lost her memory it was like she became a different person but can you erase feelings of guilt that plague her in previous life. Her conflict in herself when she is faced with the truth that she was a ruthless killer was quite a shock for her and you sympathized with her even if she did atrocious things in her past. I really like her character she gets scared and get bruised in the story but gets stronger as well it also shows her determination not to make the same mistakes again

The love interest OH MY GAWD I LOVE TAE HYUN he is so cute his relationship with her is quite hilarious for a badass crime lord he can be sweet and caring or those he holds dear and a ruthless boss in the next moment. His mood shifts constantly throughout the story and you get to see a glimpse of how he became how he is and it was quite a ride

The plot, the story itself is interesting because in the end there is a big reveal and I'm not gotta spoil it for you I'm that cruel but it will blow your minds or at least torture of anticipation on the next book

Another reread: January 7, 2021

Done rereading as of December 23, 2018

I already read it in fanfiction form three years ago. Be prepare when you're planning to read it.

No words can explain how good this book is and how it will change your life.

MY OLD REVIEW:

“You’ll tell me what it feels like, right? When you find Paris?”

This words will always stuck in my heart forever. There is so much meaning in this sentence. Eventhough it’s only a fiction, it makes me believe magical love stories— a timeless love. A man who is still worth fighting for named by Kwon Tae Hyun, his uncondional love for Choi Yoori. Their love for each other is undescriable, they arguing and fighting for the stupidiest and non-sense things but still, at the end of the very day they end up loving and caring for one another.

I read the final chapter crying SO hard. I know it’s kind of pathetic and overreacting, it’s just a fanfiction but it was so amazing and heartbreaking the idea of Taeri. It’s stung my heart, I know how to be in love, I felt it before… How to be broken so badly but unlike what is Yoori experienced, it’s incredibly painful and lifeless not being with him. Just imagining it, I feel my heart breaking into a million pieces.

Reading the last few chapters (the fanfic edition), is like early mourning... you already know what will happen in the ending. I remember vividly, I'm crying in the living room with my box of tissues only to comfort me when my cousin walked in and thought my boyfriend broken up with me. (I don't even had a boyfriend that time and never had one.)

When I was in school this morning, I told my girl classmate the story, while telling her, I felt my eyes tearing up. Dramatic much I know.

I don’t want a guy like Kwon Tae Hyun. I love him as much as I hate him. Make sense? I love him because he is so danm perfect and I’m thanking God that a guy like him didn’t exists this world, let’s face reality here. I hate him for leaving Yoori, for leaving her with such pain. Well, it doesn’t make sense to you guys but please understand.

I was hoping Yoori was going to commit suicide but the love of Taehyun for her stopped her. I was disaapointed when she didn’t do it, speaking of my suicidal side. Yeah, I don’t think I can’t leave without him especially like a guy Taehyun, he is worth living for but at the same time, worth dying for.

“Whenever yo go, I’ll follow.”

I don’t want to cry anymore. Geez.

DNF at like 60%
Imagine a really really cheesy kung fu movie, with bad special effects and overacting. One man, unarmed single handedly takes down 14 men, walks away without a scratch and looks hot while doing it....honestly if thats what the underworld is like I'm booking an express train to heaven.

Going to leave my 5 stars here and proceed to finally follow my dream of purchasing and re-reading this.

1st read, 2010(?) - I first read this on Soompi back in high school. When it got published a few years later I didn't have the money to buy it. I remember loving this book. This series tore me apart. Everyone needs to read Con's books UGHHHHHH

Read this story online years ago on an Asian community forum called Soompi and let me tell you this story SKYROCKETED, went viral and became THE most talked about story across the entire fanfic section of the forum.

I'm so glad and proud the author managed to get the story published into a book after all these years. The plot itself is still the same however the overall writing structure itself changed dramatically (in a more mature manner) and I love it!! I admit it is a loooong book, she's publishing it into 4 books but don't feel overwhelmed by it!

The chemistry and love between the two characters is undeniable and addicting, the conversations are funny and thought-provoking and the events are nerve-wracking, dark, dangerous, unpredictable and touching. It isn't a light story and you'll need to soak every information in thoroughly. Fear not, Welcome to the Underworld is gripping, epic, breathtaking, meaningful, heart wrenching, unforgettable and timeless. It will shred your heart into a million pieces then burn each of them but the pain is worth everything. If there is one thing to take from this story, is that love may not conquer, but its journey and destination is worth it.

Note: Its an Asian fiction meaning its based in South Korea and characters are Asian and have Korean names so it could be confusing on who's who at first. Other than that its like any other self-published novel :)

I absolutely CANNOT WAIT to revisit my 'Snob and Brat' and their 'Paris'. I've missed them soooooo much. EVERYONE SHOULD READ IT FOR PARIS. No really, you will not look at Paris the same ever again.

My favourite quotes:

"Forever is overrated. I'll give you something timeless instead."

"...no matter where life takes me, no matter the distance, no matter the length of time, no matter the obstacles—I’ll always come back to you. Even if I, myself, am not sure if I’ll come back—in the end I’ll always come back. Cause that’s the thing about boomerangs, right?"

"I'll give you the stars and moon, Princess. And maybe even a city to go along with it"

Because I'm predictable, I feel like this book is worthy of creating the shelf, "too hot (hot damn)"
----------

Story time: As I started reading this book, I was overcome with a strong sense of deja vu. It made no sense to me because how many stories could I know about a girl who spills coffee on a customer and in the end gets blackmailed into being the assistant to a crime lord? Later I realized that I actually stumbled across this book years ago when I was craving mythology retellings and mistakenly took this as a Persephone/Hades story based on the title (younger, naive me didn't bother reading the synopsis apparently). At the time, I was so disappointed that this was, in fact, not a story about Hades and Persephone that I put the book down and never looked back...until I saw my dear friends (and excellent book pushers), Sue and Silvana, peaked my interest...and I wasn't disappointed this time around at all.

After reading the first three books of this series without stopping in between, I officially have a book hangover from this series because I was just that hooked. I think about this story as I make breakfast. As I continually ignore my other schoolwork and make photoshop edits for this series. It's a terrible book hangover yet I relish in it.

Admittedly, certain parts of the story is somewhat predictable, if you've read the synopsis or put two and two together while reading it. Regardless, the plot twists later in the series are mindblowing, and the story was too entertaining to put down anyway. I absolutely loved the romance as the two main characters go from barely tolerating each other's existence, to their domestic bickering and teasing like an old married couple, to forming a trusting friendship, to their hot, flirty moments that had me swooning.

"Hey stranger," she said composedly, concealing the fact that she was more than happy to see him again. It had only been a day but it felt like it had been forever since she last saw him.
"Missed me?" he teased, a mischievous smile already forming on his face. His hold on her hand tightened. He seemed pretty happy to see her as well.
Yes!
"Didn't even know you were gone," she replied coyly.
Tae Hyun laughed. He took a moment to study any bluff on her face. Shaking his head with hilarity, he boldly said, "You're such a bad liar."

The characters themselves were loads of fun. Choi Yoori, the protagonist, had me laughing out loud with her spunk and silliness (I've now developed duck humor), and I wholeheartedly admire her capability to resist Tae Hyun for as long she did. Heavens know that I would melt into a puddle if he so much as looked at me 10 miles away. All the secondary characters were also either endearing or very intimating and interesting.

Final line: if you're looking for a book with some cute bickering and some hot smoldering, and you don't shudder at the thought of bloody torture from gang activity, I would definitely give Welcome to the Underworld a try!

Holy cow, I'm not gonna lie I really wanted Yoori in the end to kick ass and all of a sudden remember everything! But I was sadly denies that pleasure. What an addicting read!! I can't believe it took me so long to find this series!!!!
Tae Hyun is starting to become my favorite underworld gang lord, I'll admit in the beginning I was slightly annoyed with Yoori's forced personality, the author was obviously trying to make the story funny but it was not very natural,
All in all amazing book!

Reread: It's been what..3? 4 years? since I first read this (soompi version)and up to now whenever I think about Tae Hyun and Yoori's story I can't help but to tear up a bit. Or get misty-eyed.

You know that moment when I have lots of books on my TBR but I still chose to reread this. And now I am rereading the second book and I can't help but to:

but at the same time since I know how this is all going to end:

Note: This is a fanfiction written last 2010 in Soompi. The author started to produce physical copies last 2012. There are 4 books (2 of them already published, 2 still waiting to be publish) since the story is too long for one book and the author does't want to cut short the story.

AND IF YOU'RE THINKING THAT THIS IS JUST ANOTHER SUCKY FANFICTION TURN BOOK....YOU'RE WRONG. REALLY REALLY REALLY WRONG.

"the favored King and the infamous Queen were both wiping blood from their faces, looking like young Gods walking the earth."

Choi Yoori was forced into the underworld of crimes and gangs and violence as Tae Hyun's assistant. The two of them were at each other's throat from the moment they met, but Tae Hyun has come to greatly appreciate her and become protective of her. Choi Yoori is not facing a bigger dilemma when she realizes that her past car accident that has led to her amnesia may have erased a big part of her identity and her connection to the underworld. Everyone seems to be connecting her to the Queen of the Underworld who have died a few years ago. Yoori is now struggling to understand whether she is actually the Queen or not.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I enjoyed it so much, it was entertaining and action packed but still lighthearted and fun. The bickering between Yoori and Tae Hyun had me cracking up most of the time. These two took my love for hate-to-love trope and doubled it with how adorable they were. Even the side characters were so entertaining. I'm just going to admit that I'm becoming Jae Won's favorite fan. He is too precious and too pure.

I had a slight issue with the lack of females in the book. I hope Chae Young makes a reappearance and that we get to see more of Hae Jin because Yoori needs some females in her life. And it's also getting annoying with how much everyone is obsessed with Yoori and treating her like she's the entire world. Which also has me annoyed with Ji Hoon and this semi-love triangle going on around here even though I can tell Ji hoon doesn't stand a chance.

but anyways, this aside. I AM SO EXCITED FOR THE SEQUEL!!! I just really wanna see friendships move forward and Tae Hyun and Yoori becoming canon. And I want to see what Yoori will do next with everything that has been revealed to her.

This is one of the most engrossing Korean like romantic crime drama i have read since Sempre...which was also a fanfiction at first. I am quite happy to have discovered this upon a recommendation of a friend. Although the flow of the story and the characters were predictable but i find the author's writing style very engaging which is very right for this kind of story.
The heroine Choi Yoori is a feisty yet clumsy character and I do enjoy her banter with the young crime lord of the Serpents Tae Hyun. Her character is shrouded in mystery from the beginning as she suffered from amnesia three years prior in a so called car accident. But unbeknownst to her that in meeting Tae Hyun will ultimately lead her to her dark past. Oh my GAWD the anticipation and the sparks that flew between this two is just one of those romantic couples you want to ship so hard! Who can't resist a sometimes silly yet feisty girl like Choi Yoori head butt with her new boss the very arrogant Tae Hyun. I have my fair share of watching Korean drama and this is just like watching those kind of drama. I can tell why this was such a hit with the fanfic readers. I can't wait to dive into the sequel Fall of the Gods.

Omg. This is too much. I can't. I don't even know where to start. Lol I am so happy that I read this. I'm so intrigued by its rating so yeah I gave it a try. I started reading this last night 9pm and when I checked the time, it almost 3am. I can't seem to put this book down. I don't know but I cried on some chapters even though those scenes were not really that teary or sad. I just felt like it! Probably because I feel the 'feels' every moment, every scene. And of course! Memorizing every character's name was pretty challenging!!

Well I hoped that something happened too between Yoori and Tae Hyun, but I still liked the book though

The only thing that REALLY got on my nerves were the stupid korean or whatever names, it was soo hard for me to remember those names and I was like who the fuck is that "jae jung jang"(I totally just made that name up, there wasnt anyone called that) all the time, I had a very hard time with those names

Holy shit, this book...
I need to wait until I have time in my hands to write down a coherent review, but all I'm going to say is that I pictured Krystal Jung as Choo Yoori, Kim Namjoon as Kwon Tae Hyung and Kim WooBin as Ji Hoon.

I'm not really sure how to review this. I thought that the writing was too fanfic-like: The events that happened, how everything was phrased and the actions of the characters--I felt like I was reading from Quotev or AO3 or fanfiction.net. (And seems I was right--apparently this was once from Soompi??? I'm not much into KPOP so.)

There were parts that I was a bit annoyed by the main heroine, and I didn't care much for Tae Hyun. But Ji Hoon is my favorite character! I hope good things happen to him in the next books.

The ending though, was great. I can't wait to read what would happen in the next books--especially the battle between the 'King' and the 'Queen'. I 'd really love to see that. I just want An Soo Jin/Choi Yoori to disregard her 'harem' and rise up again and take her rightful throne.

Overall, it was okay.

Review:

I used to be obsessed with this story when it was still written and updated in the Soompi forum’s fan fiction section. This was nothing less of a hit, a more than fascinating read and the following it managed to gather was amazing. All completely deserved of course. Everyone knew of it and everyone who gave it a chance were gripped and mind blown or at least weren’t indifferent towards it. I remember waiting for updates for the next chapter impatiently and anxiously. The feelings when you noticed an addition to the story were indescribable, a flood of all emotions.

I am incredibly happy that this is now available as e-book on various e-book sites and non forum readers have the chance to get to know this awesome story. I also have to quickly mention that the author’s current work The Eternity of Eclipse continues to raise the bar of how brilliant Con’s works could be. I can’t wait for the upcoming three stories she is planning to create.

So why is this story so noteworthy?

Boy can this author create a complicated puzzle of a storyline, with mysteries constantly surfacing and being solved, twists that will leave you breathless and that you would never see coming, endless tension (good and bad) and action, characters that get under your skin in an überpositive or disgusting way, swoon worthy moments that bring out the fangirl in everyone, breathtaking romance, believable heart quenching angst in just the right dosages, even if you might guess the end result you will never figure out the journey there, fights, steamy moments (nothing explicit though), secrets, friendship, endless love, impossible obstacles, cute pet names (that aren’t annoying), hot guys, cute brave girls, a whole new mini world inside the big one with its own rules and regulations, all the diverse emotions the characters and scenes evoke with the slightest effort but that stay with you for a long time, just all-out GREAT writing, and and and... I could go on forever.

I have to mention that I pretty much despise love triangles, yes, my negative emotions towards that troupe are quite heavy, but I can’t help it, it just puts me off a million fold. And, surprisingly, this story also includes such a triangle and amazingly enough, I didn’t hate it. It was just that masterfully done, I wasn’t left annoyed, on the contrary, it was exciting. Regarding the main couple, I also appreciated their relationship having time to develop and they grew to love each other. No insta love here.

Some people not in any way familiar with Korea may find it slightly odd to read a romance set there at the beginning, all including Korean names, places, typical character traits, peculiarities, customs, etc, but to me it makes the setting more exotic, out of the ordinary and appealing. Nevertheless, the setting doesn’t really hinder reading and understanding the story in the slightest. So if you might be somewhat put off by all the foreignness, don’t be, you won’t even notice the difference much, plus it’s what enables the story to be more unique.

An amazing story is just as amazing as its faults:

There was somewhat of a slow start and I didn’t fully understanding where things were headed, but once it went full speed, it didn’t let up in the slightest. You were hit with one revelation and piece of a puzzle after another, the latter leaving you more breathless than the former. Also, maybe it was me, but there was at times too much descriptive paragraphs (and in the original format they were quite big chunks as well), they were everything but unnecessary but once in a while I was hoping for more dialogue. There are noticeable grammar and spelling mistakes as well, so if you are very sensitive to those, please try to focus more on the story itself, however hard that might manage to be.

A couple of words on the main couple:

The heroine Yoori is great heroine: nice, funny, sassy, brave and determined, she’s thrust into these incredible and unimaginably dangerous circumstances with having to adapt to this cruel world of elite crime. She is confused on who to trust and she is also at a loss regarding herself and her role in this new world and the lives its inhabitants. Everyone is suspicious, even the ones closest to her. Yoori is easy to root for, although, she has her stubborn streak and was too evasive towards her relationship with TaeHyun that I was just screaming at her to give in already and admit, but I guess that is part of her charm.

TaeHyun ... a charming criminal with a big heart for our heroine. He was a sexy hunk in addition to being quite intriguing on WHY he did what he did regarding Yoori, and overall, his motives, thoughts and level of danger were nicely masked with good boy/bad boy innocence and naughtiness. An enjoyable hero.

In conclusion:

There will supposedly be 4 books in which the story is published in (don’t let the length and the amount of books stop you from giving it a chance). I’ve read the original fan fiction till the end and know how things play out. Let’s leave it at that and say if you are even slightly intrigued, I ask you to give this book a chance and don’t give up too early, as mentioned it takes some time to fully take off.

This is probably one of the best stores I’ve ever read as fan fiction and, honestly, I’ve read quite many from all around. Try it out! I wholeheartedly recommend!

Oh my good god. I didn't even know Welcome to the Underworld is in goodreads!

I first read WTTU in soompi and I absolutely fell in love with it. And I am not kidding.

Welcome to the Underworld is the best book that I've ever read in my whole life. It takes the number one place in my heart because the book was just so amazing and beautiful that it hurts.
And believe me, I've read over a hundred books. I doubt if any book could top Welcome to the Underworld. Well, an exception to Eternity of Eclipse, that is also by our very genius, epic and awesome writer, Con.template. She's truly gifted that she never fails to blew me away with her one of a kind works.

I remember I read this for only about 4 days (normally, it'd probably take you a week or two) and I didn't get any sleep (very much worth it!) because I just couldn't stop. The plot is just WOW. It is so interesting and no way cliche. I didn't even expected that. Con rocks.

The title...

...Welcome to the Underworld, intrigued me and made me raised my brows. But later on in the story, when it came to full circle, I understand why Con did that and once again, she surprised me.
I love WTTU. :)

And I love Paris.

I also love Snob and Brat.

My very handsome, sweet, and truly a gentleman but dangerous snob, Kwon Taehyun would be:

Welcome to the Underworld is Con's debut novel and I'm sure, that just like I am, you won't be disappointed and you'd be very much satisfied.

Unlike others, WTTU is nothing cliché and it'll make you bite your nails from anticipation, grin from ear-to-ear, pee in your pants from excitement, laugh like you need a straight-jacket, and cry like you've never cried before.

Yup. Been there, done that.

And, triple yes!
I want to find Paris.., too.

The emotions were perfect, and so are the lines and the story.
WTTU has EVERYTHING. SUSPENSE, MYSTERY, ROMANCE, HEARTBREAK, HAPPINESS LAUGHTER...EVERYTHING.

Plus, Welcome to the Underworld is very, so much well-written. Con used profound words that awed me.

Truly beautiful and one of a kind.

GREAT JOB, CON!!!!

I'm conflicted on this one. There was a lot that needed improving in terms of writing and length. I had to slug thought the first hundred pages but I actually found myself really enjoying the plot after meeting Ji hoon.

At first I thought this was pretty cheesy and ridiculous-then I just started visualizing it as a K-drama an I was on board. Some KD's can be pretty out there with how they force the mains together-so if your cool that give this a try.

Ok, so this review is going to be a little brutal. And extremely judgmental. Why? Because with all the hype and positive publicity surrounding this story, I was left feeling rather angry when I finally finished this one. It took forever for me to get my hands on a copy of the paperback, which also may have added to my overall feeling of disappointment with this book in particular.

All warnings aside, there may be some spoilers here, so read at your own risk. :/

The author pissed me off immensely by not sticking to one tense when writing Welcome to the Underworld. It was so fucking distracting!! I understand that this was originally a fanfic, but c'mon! Who wasn't doing their job here? The editors? The publisher? Or all of the above? It's hard to stay in the moment when the reader is constantly having to mentally correct what the author has written. Maybe they should have looked over the entire novel again and changed these inconsistencies instead of publishing it like this. Some readers may not be bothered by these obvious, jarring shifts, but I was. Tremendously. It bothered me so much I was tempted to abandon the novel almost every time I picked it up.

And don't even get me started on the grammar. Who the hell writes "fucken" and "eff" in place of the appropriate cusses? The fact that those mistakes, along with many others - using "past" incorrectly, for starters - were not corrected prior to publishing takes away from the story. Again, I know this was fan fiction, but I expect more from authors and their support staff when it comes to the novels that they release. Is it really so hard to write "fucking," or "fuck," or "fuckin'" instead?

If all the aforementioned wasn't distracting enough, then there was the constant use of "..." when a simple period would have sufficed. Again, something that others may overlook, but it was too frequent for my tastes. The use of an ellipsis is meant to indicate the continuation of a thought, or the derailment of one, not the end of every fucking sentence. Perhaps the author should have brushed up on their rules of grammar before deciding to publish. Or had some beta-readers who do, and relied on their criticisms to make the final product all the more appealing.

Now we come to the issues with the main characters. The lack of chemistry between the two main leads for the first half of the book also bothered me. I didn't feel anything for Yoori. No anguish because of having lost her memories. No fear when she was subjected to all the various forms of abuse at the hands of the other Kings or their gangs. Despite her huge dilemma about whether or not she is the alleged "Queen of the Underworld" was true or not, she simply came off as whiny, one-dimensional, and irritating. And Tae Hyun didn't become interesting until the very last third of the novel. His best moments came when we were able to see a side of him that was tender, loving, caring, or concerned for Yoori. He was, to put it bluntly, boring at best. Not something you want when your character is meant to inspire fear and reverence from others because of their morals.

Needless to say this book had a few good moments, but it just wasn't enough to redeem the work as a whole. I will undoubtedly look for the next installment, but may be more apprehensive about picking it up.

Such a refreshing story and setting! Korean crime lords fighting each other to become the leader of the underworld; definitely a must read.
Although she didn’t approve of gangs, she would be a liar if she said she wasn’t fascinated by the mystery cloacking this secretive society. It intrigued her endlessly. Their acts of violence were so public to the rest of the world, yet no one from the outside was privy to the inner workings of their world. It was as if they were ghosts in her world, appearing in and out, yet never leaving any trace of their identities behind.

Choi Yoori was just a waitress until she spilled coffee on a customer who promptly blackmailed her to become his personal assistant. This customer was none other than one of the kings of the Underworld, Kwon Tea Hyun, the King of Serpents. There are different gangs in the Underworld but the main three are Serpents, Scorpions and Skulls. When Yoori starts finding out what Tea Hyun really does she tries to run, but once a crime lord sets his eyes on you there’s little you can do.
“You are pure evil.” He hid a crooked smile. “I prefer to see myself as strict.”

Yoori soon finds herself thrown in a dark world ruled by violence; and Tea Hyun is no exception. He’s no saint, to become the king of Serpents he had to kill one of the other kings, and to maintain his place he’s had to kill again. Tea Hyun doesn’t turn into a good guy for Yoori, nope he’s always set on what he wants and how to get it. Although he does show more vulnerability and playfulness to her, and it’s beautiful.
“You owe me.” He smirked, studying her like she was the most entertaining thing he had ever laid eyes on. “What do I owe you, my disrespectful assistant?”

Yoori is spicy and feisty, and doesn’t know how you should act in front of a crime lord (it’s hilarious how outraged he is at first from her lack of respect). She’s innocent and naive in so many ways, it’s even ridiculous most of the time, but in a funny way.
Didn’t he realize that she hated him more than anything right now? She hated him for the simple fact that he was a monster and for the simple fact that he made it so much harder for her to hate him, especially when he exerted so much kindness to her.

Everything becomes even more dangerous, and interesting, because Yoori is the look-alike of An Soo Jin, the Queen of the Underworld, the Scorpion Girl. She was one of the most feared and merciless people of the Underwolrd, but she died under mysterious circumstances three years before.
Her blood would definitely be spilled tonight.

I loved this story, even if the main plot twist was predictable from the very first page, but the details and the characters will completely drag you into this world. This is only the beginning, I can’t wait to find out what this story has in store for me.

I believe most of the early reviewers here are loyal readers/followers of Contemplate in soompi and therefore must have read this story in its earliest fanfiction form. I stumbled on this fic back in 2009/10-ish, if I can recall. It was kinda hard to ignore it since practically everyone in the forum was quoting lines from the fic in their signatures. Having read most of the fanfic posted in soompi (or the internet for that matter), I must say my expectations were not that great, even if I kept reading rave reviews about this one.

Well, now, even years after I finished reading every single chapter of the story, I must say that it is nothing like I expected it to be, or that it nothing like I ever read before. I spent like five nights reading it, and I still can recall the exact emotion I felt that night when I finally finished reading the last chapter. I remember sobbing silently, weeping, clenching my fist in the dark and went 'Oh noesss whywhywhy??'. I tried to tell my friend to read the fic, but find myself lost with words in trying to explain what's the story is all about. That's the sheer ingenuity of this authoress in weaving her story. There are so many things happening in the story that it's kinda hard for me to describe it in a more comprehensible manner.

Having said that, I haven't read this story in its polished, edited, book form. Even though its been years since I last read it, and having read all kinds of book in between and actually grow up, I expect my feelings for this one will remain the same when I read it for the second time around. I'm excited to begin the journey of discovering Paris all over again.

I guess I was lucky in someways that I discovered the fic so late after it was completed, since I don't have to suffer the agony of waiting and guessing when the next chapter will be updated.
