My Better Half

Rate this book
Real life has a habit of creeping up on you. Take this guy, for example. One minute he’s an enthusiastic graduate high on life starting out on his career with a bright future; the next he’s burnt out in his 30s exhausted by his meaningless relationships and empty contribution to society. The ultimate ambush. The only thing he has left with any substance is his marriage. And even that relationship has been fake for longer than he can remember. But it’s all he’s got left. And then, one day, that’s gone too. What then?

Well, then you turn to your mentor for advice.
Some people get to the heart of the matter.
Some hit the nail on the head.
Clive splits the atom.
The guy’s a guru, no question. His advice is just what’s needed. If anyone can cut through the bullology and fix his broken life, it’s Clive. After all, it’s never too late. Is it?

With Clive’s ‘therapy’ leading the way, this everyman embarks on a cataclysmic journey of reinvention involving travel, drink, drugs, a sort of rock ‘n’ roll, speed dating, brothels and, of course, revenge, until he realises Clive isn’t exactly who he claims to be.

Ranging from heart-wrenching and compassionate to disturbing and sinister, My Better Half plucks at a wide spectrum of emotions as it tries to make sense out of the lunacy of life.

I read this book just recently on the kindle app for the iPhone. I think it's testament to a good book that you can't put it down even when the font is small and you have to "turn the page" every two sentences!! My friend recommended it to me. She read it in 24 hours through the same medium.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "My Better Half". Being a Londoner, I felt the author captured the essence of the mind numbing inevitability that London life can be at times. As a work of contemporary fiction, it is surprising fresh and truthful.

The plot is brilliantly suspenseful and it left me praying and writing letters to Santa for a sequel. A real page turner. Great characters and a very good read!! I would highly recommend it.

British Chuck Palahniuk

I kept seeing an ad on Facebook for this, stating that he is the British Chuck Palahniuk. I think I would have enjoyed the book more a) had it not been advertised like that b) has my wife not left me just after I started the book for the same exact reason his wife left him and c) had it not basically been a rehash of Fight Club. Even still, it was an enjoyable read.

At last I've managed to sit down to a book that is an all round excellent read! Jerome Griffin's book has everything you want in a book. A gripping opening, a page turning plot and a quirky ending. It kept me hooked throughout with his attention to detail and his brilliant turn of phrase. The characters stayed with me long after I'd finished the read. Looking forward to the next book!

If American Psycho and Fight Club had a book baby....

...And Bridget Jones Diary was it's Chimera. Not super original, but still fairly fluid and easy to read. If it were a color, it would be Palahniuk.

Proper review to come.

Dull, predictable, boring, no climax. The only reason why it didn't get one star is cause of he writing style, it reads like a Palahnuik book.

I've read better

Eh, writing was done decently well but story was predictable without a satisfying ending. Seemed like a rip off of fight club.

Not badly written;pretty good story; if you had never heard of Palahniuk, then it is probably 4 stars. But I love Chuck, and this is nothing but a cheap and blatant theft of his style and plot points.
