A dream in the night. A leap of faith. A quest for truth and treasure.
From term papers and instant coffee to blood-thirsty pirates and buried treasure, Rachel Madera, a gifted university professor, finds herself travelling through time on a journey of discovery and danger, all because of a simple dream. Despite the threat, Rachel is undaunted, certain she holds the keys to unlock the mystery of a Pharaoh's treasure... and alter the course of history.
The only thing that stands between her and peril is Captain Mallory Tucker, a man with a tragic past and intractable moral code. Born of the sea, he is among the leading mariners of 18th century Europe. But the derelicts who make up his crew and the capriciousness of the ocean have taken their toll, and Captain Tucker is tired and jaded. The last thing he needs is a precocious young woman dropping onto his ship and creating havoc. But he'll fight to the death for her honor, her beliefs... and her love.

I liked this one. I liked that it had great romance but so clean. Rachel was a little hard to relate to at the beginning because she thought SO differently than me. But she changes. And I loved the epilogue. Great getaway book.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. No other consideration was offered, expected or received.
This is one of those stories where you're not really sure how you feel about it.
About 56% in, the story gets intense, with lots of action, death, treasure and even romance. Up until that point, though, there are some very slow moments.
The basis of the story – her finding a way to go back in time, finding herself back in 1711 – is really exciting. I liked that the whole book was written as her journal, but I really disliked the main character. Every time I thought she was growing, learning … feeling … I ended up wrong, but in the end she became more than even she had imagined.
I like the way the whole thing ended. There were several times I was really worried about the outcome of some of the characters that I had grown to like. But everything was wrapped up in the end … which makes me wonder where book #2 in this series is going to take me.
Favorite characters: Captain Mallory Tucker AND Captain Frederik (I loved his personality).
I received a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This is a great adventure story, with time travel and lost treasure. It was a fun easy read and although characterized as “Christian Fiction”, it’s not in your face. The only times you notice is when Rachel sees John’s cross and questions its significance, and also the fact that this novel was a clean read, one which I enjoyed very much. I can’t imagine jumping off a cliff to end my life, and end up going back in time 298 years. The eras are so vastly different, I commend the authors for having her blend in so easily; I’d have had a difficult time myself. I loved the pirate adventures and even the dirty Duke of Norcross! Captain Tucker was as expected of a seafaring man, rather rough around the edges but eventually softened. There’s even some romance in the mix, what a well rounded book; this book was definitely a 4 star novel!
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
I very much enjoyed the book. Rachel Madera is a university professor who is dissatisfied with her current subjects taught and wishes to pursue a scholarly course of study in time travel, much to the chagrin of her colleagues. She becomes so desperate to prove herself correct and receive the accolades due her that she throws herself off a high cliff, landing in the cold, choppy ocean in the year 1714. And that is as far as I will go with spoilers.
There is much high seas adventure and adventure in the European society, as well. There are pirates and treasure. There is also, at the core of the story, an everlasting love that changes both a man and a woman into the people they wish to be. A love that most of us wish to find/have. Not only does Rachel find her acclaim and vindication, but she finds that some things are more important. This is a beautiful love story that everyone should read.
I think this is the first time that a FREE book has been this good for me. I just loved this book. I loved the story, I loved the time travel piece, I love a good pirate story, I loved the sweet romance, I loved the characters(which at the beginning I wasn't so sure, but they totally grew on me) and I loved how it all ended. I always know when I book is a "hit" for me when I re-read my favorite parts. I think this is one of those books that occasionally I am just going to re-read the whole book. Not right away mind you, but in the future. So glad that I picked this one up...FOR FREE!
Here is what 'Book Lover' said about 'The Dreamer' on Amazon. She gave it 5 stars!
I must admit when I began reading I found it kind of strange(different might be a better word), the story was good enough to keep going and I'm so glad I did!!! WOW!!! This is such a wonderful book!!! I laughed and cried, Please give it a try, you will love it too I'm sure.
I read this book in the dark, using only the synopsis as a reference. I like it, it's a good book about time travel. And it's nice that hasn't used the erotic, it is rare to find romantic book without sex.
Captain - “We are going ashore, and you are going to stay there. Forever. If I have to bind and gag you to ensure it, I will.” I smiled, exhilarated and revived, feeling more affection for him than ever before. “I’m so happy!” In my exuberance, I flung my arms around him. “And I know you well enough to see that your ostensible anger is only unconscious concern for my safety, Captain, and I think it’s sweet.”
You know how on Goodreads you have those authors who promote their books, and if you're naïve like me, you get excited by them, but when you read them, they're really crap? Well, let me just say this. May Nicole Abbey, I salute you. This is shockingly good.
What surprised me was that books that are this clean often have a detachment to them that makes it hard for me to engage. But I was so caught up in this book, I didn't care about a lot of the annoying things that happened. I was on that pirate ship, and that's all that matters. =D
Note [from Rachel's reports]: Captain unexpectedly intriguing. Great asset as guide and colleague. Compelling case study. Suffered significant difficulties in childhood. Association with pirates a possibility.
I have a confession to make. There's a certain type of silly but super-smart heroine that I adore. I think they're hilarious.
Rachel's an academic and views most circumstances in life as educational and a worthwhile experience, even the crazy ones. But she's a scholar so she doesn't do well with real-life situations. She's a child in many ways. She's very intellectual and that makes her a bit socially awkward – y'know, she takes things literally and says weird stuff. She has to have an explanation for everything. She reminded me of my best friend who shows some symptoms of Asperger's syndrome. Saying that, I love a heroine with a passion, but Rachel takes it to the extreme. When she gets caught up on one focus, she hardly sees anything else because her mind just cancels out everything else. Naturally she exasperates Tucker to no end. Yet she's a woman I understand – full of contradictions and surprises.
I awoke and carefully stretched, testing the wound at my side. I gingerly touched it with my fingers, though I didn’t look at it. I did not want to know what it looked like, even though it might have been educational.
She seems to distance herself from emotion by being analytical. But that doesn't make her closed off, rather, the opposite. She can be brutally honest about herself without engaging with the feeling because her choice of words makes it so. For instance, she wants to kiss the captain.
"...I have an instinctual, almost overwhelming impulse to bestow upon you a...a physical gesture of affection...And I also anticipate that you...that you may not find it unpleasant, and might even appreciate and value such a gesture.”
Is this chick for real? Hahahaha.
Captain Tucker I was relieved the hero, Tucker, was not excessively handsome. He was average. I felt sorry for him, but you can see that he secretly is crazy about Rachel. Sometimes he feels that her interest in him is only for educational purposes and he obviously wishes for more. While he appreciates her high tolerance levels, he feels a bit intimidated by her aggressive approach to life and her thirst for knowledge.
Captain - ”You speak as though you’re not even human, like you’re just studying us from afar. You changed for a while, and I thought...I hoped....” He stopped momentarily and then shook his head. “But here you are once more, worse than ever.”
I loved that even though he doesn't understand her, he still encourages her endeavours.
“You could have increased your knowledge, gathered new information... written your little notes.”
and
“It was rather imprudent of you to choose to come with me when such an invaluable resource had presented itself to you, wasn’t it?” Rachel - “I know. But I ....” “Your education will be neglected.”
P.S. I adored Captain Frederickson. Now that's what you call an old charmer P.S.2 The villain and what happened to him in the end pleased me immensely
I must admit that I'm a great fan of stories with adventure and an element of romance. And I love a good pirate story. This book has all three. Rachel Madera is a smart, highly intelligent young woman, and a professor at the university. Her life is all about books and knowledge. Until one night when she dreams she can fly. It changes the course of her learning, and she soaks up all the knowledge she can on time travel. Sounds kind of crazy, right?
It works well in this novel as professor Madera gets so upset with the naysayers that she runs away, and keeps on running. Until she runs off a cliff. When she lands, she discovers herself in the ocean struggling to survive, and in the 1700's.
She's pulled out of the water by Captain Mallory Tucker. He feels honor-bound to keep her safe from his crew and their lustful thoughts, and therefore claims her for himself.
When Rachel discovers that Captain Tucker holds the key to the discovery of an Egyptian Pharaoh's treasure, she insists on going after it.
I'll not give away any more of the plot other than to say, pirates abound, as does the excitement. Will Rachel Madera live? Will Captain Tucker rescue her? Will she travel back to current day - or somewhere else? Great story!
The story overall was intriguing and an interesting fast paced read. The relationships between the different characters was sparked with romance. I loved the Captain; he was my favorite character in the book. The Captain protected Rachel and was just a lovable hard ass outward but sweet inward guy character.
I found the start of the book to be confusing; I did not understand Rachel’s reasoning or characterization in why she was doing what she was. It just kind of started and there was no build up to the beginning; I felt more explanation would have been appreciated. The character of Rachel as a whole was confusing. She had done so much research on everything yet when it came to life experience she was making the stupidest mistakes that anyone would know not to do.
Overall, I would recommend this book. Getting through the beginning onto the real story created a great read.
Note: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I had my doubts about this when I first started; I didn’t hit it off with our main character Rachel. But, I knew my good friend Deb loved it, so I buckled down and before I knew it I was sucked into the story. I loved The Captain. He was a great lead and he really kept me wanting to read more. I also loved the pirate Captain Fredericks, he was hilarious. I even thought the villain was well done. My only problem with the book was Rachel; I just didn’t care for her. Luckily, as the book progresses she gets better. I did think that she had good chemistry with the captain and I enjoyed their scenes together. I thought it had a fun plot and was well written.
This book is a great reprieve from "Regency older man meets breathtakingly beautiful girl at a rout and they flirt until he proposes at the end of the season".
I really enjoyed this. Abbey wrote it well, my internal editor only bringing me up short a few times. There is also a marked lack of typos. Anymore, it seems that ebooks + romance = needs two more rounds of editing.
I also loved how much Rachel grew throughout the story, and how completely oblivious she was to the symptoms of love. Made for some great scenes. :-)
This book was a very pleasant surprise. I like historical romances but am usually leary of the time travel ones, they usually seem cheesy to me. This book was not cheesy! It was wonderful! The main character is a woman so caught up in her job and research that life is something she ignores. But life will not be ignored. She finds herself in another time with adventure staring her in the face. It's worth reading.
I wasn't sure I was going to like this one, after reading the first chapter. But soon, I had a hard time putting it down, and in the end, I found this novel WELL worth reading. Can't wait to read more by the author.
First book I have read in over 8 years!! It took me 3 days to have this finished. I loved how you could feel the sea, dress as she did, feel her confusion and experience her fears and joys! So excited to see what comes next!!!
I could not put this book down! I was captivated by its characterization and storyline. Wow! This is definitely a book that I will be recommending to all of my friends. LOVED it!!
Inspirational adventurous and filled with action and romance is what make a good book. Well that is what I look for in a book and "The Dreamer" is all that and more. Always finding the meaning behind the story without being in your face or preached. This is what I found in this book so eloquently written and descriptive in between its pages. It allows your imagination to sore with possibilities of a live lived in the past. I know I have often wondered what would we do if we could go back in time with all the knowledge we have. But as we can see all the knowledge in the world helps you nothing if you do not apply it with wisdom. Rachel a modern day young woman found her in this position. Challenged by the 18th Century lifestyle with a modern day mind set, after a dream. Searching for answers until she was shun from the very walls of learning she embraced with vicar Her knowledge taking her to places and experiencing life as we will never do. We get to know her as the observer meticulously penning down every situation, every facet of live for future studies. Thinking that she will return one day and people will acknowledge her accomplishments. We learn about her stubborn and head strong character not flinching in the eye of danger. Intellectual that drove every one around her crazy, but yet draw the most interesting characters to her. She meet Pirates, Captain Fredrick flamboyant in every detail and Dukes, Charles Dubois, Duke of Norcross. A deceiver extraordinaire. Ladies of the Ton, Lady Alistair, finding her feet in an unfamiliar world with no one to understand her. And of course Captain Mallory Tucker, larger then life. A man with integrity and a past that has made him the man that he is. But her biggest down fall was her Illusion of Grandeur reminding every one she met she is there for a purpose. Almost loosing the one person, her true purpose in the end. Her goal fixed on one thing only but cost her her objective, to become a woman in the true sense of the word. However circumstances had a way of working within her, humbling her and she found that she have fallen in love with a rigid, disciplined Captain that controls his ship with superiority and skill. Unwavering in his decisions that saved her countless times. The romance between these two were interesting to watch as it unfolds and come to a wonderful end. Tying all the questions together in a wonderful ending. But the biggest message that stood out was from a cowardly man John Finley that would give her up twice to safe his own skin but sacrificed himself to safe her at the very end. A cross always around his neck, fingering it too remind him of the message. The message of the cross very clear. It is foolish for those who do not understand its meaning but a peace for those who does accept its grace. Beautifully written and a book I greatly enjoyed.
I'm going to start off quite honest. I'm conflicted about this book. There were aspects I loved, there were aspects I was not fond it. I went back and forth on how I felt about The Dreamer, but in the end I finished the book and I'm glad that I did.
The beginning on the novel (pre-cliff dive) was a little confusing - but I'll just chalk that up to the flu I was coming down with. I got that Rachel gave up her life/career/friends for her belief in time travel, but I didn't understand why she was so convinced the time travel was possible. Maybe if I had a little back story, I would have found her desire to prove it existed a lot more tolerable.
I found Rachel also a little difficult to tolerate in the first part of the book. Why was she so convinced that she had time traveled to "this particular place at this particular time...[for] a role of some significance" (14). I understand that she time traveled through mysterious means, but she was so wrapped up in this idea and taking her notes regarding every little thing that it got old after a while. Once the story got rolling though she eventually let up on the note taking and I was glad for that. I do have to say when Tucker snapped at her to stop treating everything like a research project, I gave a little cheer. Once she stopped treating as a "research project" she absolutely grew on me and I liked her.
Another aspect of her that drove me crazy, but was easy to deal with, was she kept calling him "The captain" or "Captain." That's not his name, that's his title. I just ended up replacing it with Tucker (his last name) whenever I came across it, but that's more a me-issue than a book-issue, so I won't fault the authors for that.
I feel like I'm bashing the book, but I'm not. I read it in three days, I finished it, and I liked it. I really enjoyed the plot. It was well thought out and developed quite well. You never would have know that it was authored by two different people. While Rachel was not my favorite character (it feels weird to not like the heroine), I did enjoy our hero, Captain Tucker, I loved Captain Fredrick, and I very much enjoyed the last half of the book.
The story behind Tucker and Rachel was very sweet. There were definitely moments where you wanted to yell at them to just kiss already and stop being so shy - for lack of better words. You knew that Tucker cared for Rachel and was concerned not only for her life, but her honor as well. He protected her and loved her and you could really see that from him.
Did I enjoy this book: Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book.
I was looking forward to it after reading the synopsis but I just couldn't get into it. The premise sounded so interesting and captivating. The book failed to deliver on the promises in the synopsis. I didn't want to finish the book. (I did, but I did not want to.)
One problem I had was that I did not like the main character, Rachel. She just wasn't all that likeable. Also, for as intelligent and educated that she was made out to be, she was rather dumb. Considering that she studied time travel and believed it could happen, you would think she would have been prepared for the event. Instead, she acted as if she were still in the present day and did not take into account that she should act according to the time period she was in. I would think that anyone who is trying to prove that time travel is possible that said person would be prepared to adapt and adjust to the time period that they find themselves in.
Another aspect of this book that bugged me was the dialogue. It was very awkward with all of the different dialects. Rachel would sometimes talk as if she were still in the modern day while at other times she spoke according to the era she was in. The pirate dialogue seemed too fake and too cheesy. In fact, the pirates seemed too cliche to me. Come on, one pirate had a peg-leg...really?!?
I liked Captain Tucker. I also felt bad for him. John was underdeveloped and needed more explanation. The Duke of Norcross was arrogant and unlikeable. This worked well for this character and portrayed what and who he was. Captain Frederick was funny and enjoyable. I laughed out loud at him.
I did enjoy the ending and that twist. I wish the entire book had been that likeable.
Would I recommend it: I would not recommend this book.
I was going to begin this review by stating how the book begins on such an elegantly written note, but I just want to cut straight through to the heart of what I want to write about, and that is the main character of this story, Rachel. Rachel, I must say, has to be my favourite character throughout this whole thing, the captain being second, of course, mainly because of the fact that she is just too intelligent for her own good. From the moment she lands on Captain Mallory Tucker's ship, right after time travelling by jumping off a cliff, she is so fascinated by the time she has landed in. She is so fascinated, in fact, that she decides to make a project out of the captain almost immediately, taking notes on his ship, his life, his men...EVERYTHING!!
I also love that she seems to analyze everything even when she is being dressed in proper attire for the time. She just cannot help herself, and every observation she makes seems to come out of her mouth. It is the most hilarious thing. It is also kind of funny how she seems to confuse the captain at every turn. Her non-typical behaviour as a woman seems to scare him a little. He knows what to expect from usual woman, normal woman, and for that reason, he understands them even though he doesn't. Does that make sense? But with her, he doesn't really know what she'll do next.
And believe me, she can be very unpredictable.
This was a really sweet story full of pirates and an obnoxious duke and loads of treasure. It even includes an Egyptian pharoah. WHAT??? I relished every moment spent with all the characters of this book, not just Rachel and the captain. It was loads of fun just reading this story, and I cannot wait to get started on the others in this series.
For anyone who knows me, you know that time travel stories are not my thing. But once in a while, I step outside my comfort zone and read something different. And this was an excellent decision! I loved this book from start to finish. It was romantic, and I really did not find it sappy. In fact, I decided I would like an 18th century captain, too! Rachel has the right idea.play
This book has it all--pirates, love, time travel, history, and a surprise ending. I say that because this book is very different than any other time travel books I have read. I kept wondering how it might end, and I was happy but surprised! No spoilers from me.
If you like romance, I would recommend this book. It is completely clean--no profanity and no sex. Religion and God play a somewhat significant role although they are not central to the story. You'll have to read the book to understand that one! The author's style of writing is fantastic. Yes, she has a sense of humor. I absolutely love this book, and I hope to read more books from this author in the future.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
This one took me a little bit to get into. The main character, Rachel, was annoying and infuriating. She's a highly logical mind doing her best to rationalize everything. She's completely oblivious to normal human interactions. I could see her as a character on "The Big Bang Theory," actually. And as the novel progressed, I found I actually enjoyed this character quite a bit. She grows and changes, but never loses that zany spark that all mad scientists have.
This is categorized as Christian fiction, and if you are normally dissuaded by that, don't be in this instance. The only reason I can see why it is labeled that way is because it is a "clean" romance.
I like books and movies that are not predictable. Although I suspected that Rachel would wrangle out of her predicaments, I could not guess how and found myself hoping for her and the captain and excitingly reading page after page until it was revealed. I loved Captain Frederick the most, though all the characters were richly developed with a clear image of each formed in my thoughts. The ending was perfect as I could not predict how the story would wrap it all up in a way that would be satisfying for all the characters and the reader. This a creative and suspenseful story. I loved it, would definitely recommend it to others, and look forward to more from these authors.
I was actually excited to read this based on some rave reviews but I just didn't get it. There were a lot of inconsistencies and the author used descriptive words that didn't match the dialogue or the characters' moods. Also, the characters shifted mood for no apparent reason. I couldn't see the reasoning for some of their choices. I thought the plot and overall storyline was good, but it felt disjointed and didn't flow. I did like the importance the author placed of being a wife and mother at the end. I think this book has potential but needs a really good editor and some polishing.
I was suprised how much I loved this book! I haven't read a book about time travel that I really liked. The language and vocabulary in this book is beautiful. The characters are strong, but not perfect. The plot moves along quickly. There is passion and romance, but it is absolutely clean! Thanks for writing such an enchanting book!
This story was such a delightful surprise. I loved every minute of it and could not put it down. A delicious desert for the mind starting from the first words to the very end. May Nicole Abby writes with great heart and story telling. I was just sucked into the story and could not stop reading until the finish.
I've never read anything like this and don't know exactly what to say. Have you ever read a book and when you finished, you had to readjust your mind momentarily as you came back to reality? I'm doing that right now. At times, I was jarred out of this extraordinary world but overall it was an amazing journey for all of us.
I enjoyed this book I enjoyed Rachel's logical views and how courteous the captain is one destiny of trying to change the world to find what she needed all along
Good story!!! Rachel annoyed me to death!!! She over analyzed way too much and never sat back and actually enjoyed her life. I loved the captain though!!!
