I am a wife, a programmer, and now an author. I have an adorable mini Schnauzer and more books than I have room for. I love reading romance because no matter what may be happening in my life, I can always count on my books to end happily ever after. The day I met my husband was the day I truly began believing in happily ever after. After hearing me complain a few too many times that I had “nothing” to read despite the hundreds of paperbacks scattered around the house, my husband began suggesting I write my own stories. When I finally took his advice I discovered that although I enjoy my day job as a software engineer, my true calling is to be an author.
My sister drilled into me an appreciation for fantasy and mythology, something I try to bring to my books. My debut novel, Breaking the Nexus started as a book written for NaNoWriMo and has grown to so much more. It was the conduit that introduced me to a fantastic group of independent authors who have changed my life in unimaginable ways.
When I’m not writing, I’ve found a passion for blogging and interviewing fellow authors. I also love reading (of course!), baking, crochet, sewing sock monkeys, playing video games, and all sorts of random crafts. I have an incurable love of rubber duckies and stuffed animals, and I believe nobody should have to grow up if they don’t want.
Breaking the Nexus by Lindsay Avalon What a brilliant story. Sha, a ... well I have no idea what she is, I know she is not human and she is a full blood sorceri part fire and water and totally a woman. Then you have My Detective, a man, earth bound in the police to serve and protect and boy does he serve Sha... Well he also a man and what he can do with his hands.... well let’s say he is not completely human either. But boy is he hot. Our third protagonist. The Evil Bastard. Kind of says it all does it not? Not really no... He has a boss. Then we have Alec. Well now... he is like a lucky packet. We simply do not know what we will get when we open this package. So we have the Nexus keeping us from them... We have Sha that is a them but lands with us.. We have an evil bastard and we have...hell on earth. You got it. But we also have fun, romance, duty and love. What more do you want? Why the next book obviously..... This is a no brainer in star rating, 8 * for you dear author although I only can give 5...
I fell for the characters from the beginning with their banter and quirky commentary. The mystery of wanting to know what's going to happen next made this story a quick read and page turner. Everyone wants to get their hands on a great story, laid out with vivid pictures and amazing characters.
I fell for Connor's personality and train of thought. Sha is a very sensual and interesting character. I loved the interest between the two characters as they grew fonder of each other throughout the story. I loved the thoughts that played out in their heads as they tried to deny it. The mystery of the story caught my attention from the beginning and the puzzle pieces came together beautifully.
The author captured my interest in so many ways, with all that is within the books pages I couldn't get enough! I want the next book right this minute! Can't wait...
I was given this book for an honest review... Thanks so much for such an amazing story and good read!
It was a great read it left you wanting more, page by page. The romance, the magic the paranormal this book has it all. You see the world through the characters eyes and you never want it to end cant wait to read what is next for MS Avalon :]
I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
And Let me be honest, at first I just wasn't into it. It took me longer to read the first couple chapters and get into the story that normal. But once I got reading and the story got going, I was hooked. I loved the chemistry and attraction between Sha and Connor, very hot! Much better chemistry in this book than in the last erotica book I read!! lol Sha is impulsive and Conner is usually by the books and this was working good for them in this story. Ian, Conner's partner on the Detective squad, also has a connection with Conner-that best-friend know what you're doing connection. As all Hell breaks loose Sha and Connor fall in love, find clues to a series of murders and stop the world from ending. For me as a reader, relatively new to Paranormal books, this was great. I think this series will be a big hit. And this new author did a great job I can't gush over the book more without spilling things that happen in the book and ruin it for you. But highly recommend for you to read, 4.5 stars
Lindsay Avalon takes readers on a unique roller-coaster ride in this fantasy story about the Nexus and those who are sworn to protect it. Ms. Avalon impresses with her ability to capture and hold a readers attention and the story flows rather well. Her debut novel scores a win and no doubt will tickle the fancy of every fantasy reader out there. Personally, I would have loved to see more of this story, so I am beyond happy that Breaking the Nexus is only the beginning. The intro to this refreshing new series leaves those who read it eagerly awaiting book #2! I know I'll be waiting anxiously for the follow-up...good job Lindsay!
There is a world that lies next to ours, a world where magic is as natural as breathing. This world is called the Mythrian Realm, home to beasts of legend; banshees, gryphons, demons and dragons to name a few. Separating our world and the Mythrian Realm is a barrier known as the Nexus. But there is a problem...the Nexus is breaking down, things are slipping through, Sha Phoenix for one.
Sha is a sorceri who lands in the middle of a murder scene in Denver, Colorado. She is beautiful and sexy as well as a strong heroine with a lot of spirit and grit. It is here that she meets the strikingly handsome detective, Connor Flynn. Together they must figure out why the Nexus is breaking down, while battling a mysterious creature known as Nightmare.
At the same time Flynn is trying to maintain a professional relationship between his suspect/witness and his duty as a police officer while doing his damn best to ignore the unexplainable emotional and physical attraction he has for Sha.
This had a great storyline with threads of sensual heat dribbled out like honey, giving you a teasing taste of what is to come between Sha and Connor. It is steady, but never overdone, just the right amount of sexual burn.
The words have an instant flow, pulling you along like a boat in a current. The current at times seems even and steady, but then the action picks up and you feel as if you are heading for a waterfall. There are some stories you may read where the writing will have parts equivalent to a swampy bog and you are struggling to get through it. Breaking the Nexus had none of this. None! It was a great read from beginning to end.
There is one other person I would like to mention because it is so rare that a supporting character is perfectly done. Connor's best friend and partner Ian is so grounded that you feel comfortable that what you see is what you get. No hidden agendas or wishy-washy whimpering about the things Connor is involved in. The bond between them is strong and makes you wonder what the author has in store for us in regards to this friendship, for Lindsay Avalon has us solidly believing one way, and with a single sentence could so easily manipulate us. That my friend is great writing!
Breaking the Nexus was a pleasure to read, from the first page to the last. Lindsay Avalon has woven a tale that makes it seem entirely plausible that a magical world can exist right next to ours. Read this story, you will be glad you did. And at the end, you will feel as I did; Lindsay Avalon needs to finish the sequel, because we hunger for more!
My Review: What an incredibly creative and inventive world this is. This is the first book from a series by Lindsay Avalon. You quickly discover that there are two realms within our world...the human realm and the Mythrian world. They are kept separate by a Nexus. In the Mythrian realm, there are gateways to the human realm, but they are carefully guarded by Sentinels.
Sha is one of those sentinels and when something goes wrong at the gateway, she is flung into the human realm, directly into a serial killer crime scene which is being investigated by police detective, Connor. These two both feel an instant connection to the other, although they both have very good reasons to stay way, way apart from each other. It makes for an interesting set-up.
I think that this is considered an Urban Fantasy because it looks like it's setting up to be an ongoing adventure following the same characters, but it could easily fall under paranormal romantic suspense too, because there is a huge mysterious adventure aspect to it too. Both of these characters work in law enforcement in their respective worlds, so both of them are pretty tough, independent characters. I loved that they are both so strong, but when they truly start to connect, they find out just how much stronger they are together.
The problem is that it looks like the Nexus is in danger of failing which means all the stuff of legends: dragons, banshees, demons, fae, etc will be unleashed on the human world. Needless to say, everyone pretty much agrees that will probably not be a good thing. The Nexus was raised for a good reason. It's an ongoing issue that looks like it will play out over several books.
There was a lot to this book and the world is firmly established after this first book, but there are still lots of questions. Why does Connor, who's human, have his own powers? Who exactly is Alec and how does he fit into all this? What happened to Luca when Sha went through the gate? It was a fun first book, and now I'm excited to read #2, as it looks that book will take place in Mytherian, which could prove to be really interesting.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
This is a fantastic paranormal romance novel! I loved it!
Sha Phoenix is a wonderful character. I love her wit and humour! She is She is a part Aquarum (water magic) and part Infernum (fire magic) Sorceri. This makes her a formidable protector of the Nexus; the gateway between her world and the human one. When an explosion occurs near the Nexus, Sha is accidentally pulled into the human world, where she meets Detective Connor Flynn.
Connor Flynn is a typical alpha male. He is a fantastic character. He is strong, handsome and an honourable man. It also helps that he is very charismatic. I love his protective streak! (As an aside: I wouldn't mind being arrested by this cop!).
I absolutely loved this story! Although there is danger and intrigue, there is also great wit and warmth between the characters. I love the teasing between Sha and her Nexus partner, Luca. I also enjoyed the banter between Connor and his partner, Ian. This shows the great respect they have for each other. However, the heat between Sha and Connor is enough to melt metal, never mind the page! Their mutual attraction is combustible to say the least! The ending finished on a cliffhanger, which has me champing at the bit to read the next book in the series!
Lindsay Avalon has written an amazing paranormal romance that is extremely fast paced, but flows beautifully. Her characters are extremely likeable (except for the bad guy) and come alive on the page. A word of warning: There is two scenes of a sexual nature in this book that are explicit and HOT (fanning myself!). There is also some bad language. Therefore, I do not recommend this book for younger readers. However, I highly recommend this book if you love YA (17+), paranormal romance or fantasy. - Lynn Worton
Breaking the Nexus is a paranormal romance that is a bit different than what I'm used to picking up off the shelf. It occurs mainly in our world but there is another world, Mythria, that resides on the other side of the Nexus that houses all the creatures from legends, fairytales, mythology and nightmares.
Lindsay Avalon writes a fantastic debut novel full of action, romance and suspense. The mystery keeps you hooked and she reveals clues with great timing. Never as a reader was I ever left yelling at the characters "Why haven't you figured it out yet?!"
The book isn't very long. I'd say it's bordering novella length over novel but I'm not entirely certain on that since I don't know the exact word count and page numbers.
It ends with a bang, leading the way for the second book in the trilogy that I absolutely cannot wait to pick up--it's tentatively scheduled for release in the spring of 2013.
My one complaint, and I think this is an easy thing for new authors especially to fall into, is that the characters don't have a lot of flaws. They had a few, but they don't seem to get in the way like I'd want them to. Sha, the female lead, is headstrong, impulsive and stubborn. I would have liked to have seen this get her into a bit more trouble than it did. That being said, it is more a personal preference and the characters never come off as mary-sues, so Avalon does well there.
As a word of warning, there are two quite graphic love scenes in the book so it is not suitable for all ages and discretion should be used.
I give Breaking the Nexus 4 out of 5 stars. It's a fantastic debut novel and cannot see what else Lindsay Avalon comes out with.
This book introduces a new type of paranormal romance. The love between Sha and her new found love Detective Connor Flynn happens in the blink of an eye in the midst of universal madness between to realms. The majority of the book takes place on earth but it introduces the realm of Mythrian. The Mythrian realm hold all magical creatures and it’s purpose is to keep the magic away from humans. At the beginning of this story, Sha is sucked into the world, which lands her directly into chaos. Shortly after she meets Detective Flynn where she immediately falls in love with him. After hours of questioning, he begins to feel the same way about her. Thus, starting them on a journey they will never forget.
I liked the constant flow of the plot and the main idea behind the story. It’s intriguing. I had no problem getting pulled into the story until I came across the sex scenes. When it came to the love the two main characters showed, it was a bit unbelievable to me. The attraction happened way too fast for as little as the characters spoke to each other. It seemed like the sex scenes were drawn out. I think the attraction between the two could have been drawn out more.
Other than this I think the author did a great job and I’m looking forward to reading the next book. I give this book 4 stars.
So, I thought this book would be quite interesting based off the title and the description. Boy was I right.
So this story centers around Sha Phoenix, a Mythrian, and Connor, a seemingly mortal police detective. The story begins with Sha patroling the Nexus, as is her job, and getting trapped into a falling vortex which sends her to the mortal realm, right in the middle of a crime scene. She comes to covered in someone else's blood and surrounded by mortals. She's taken into custody and questioned, where her temper escapes her and she shows off her powers to explain her presence at the crime scene. She then begins to work with the police in an effort to catch the serial killer they're looking for.
Interestingly enough, Sha is immediately drawn to Connor and he to her. They begin to develop a link and Sha makes an interesting discovery about Connor's heritage. But there's no time to think on it as she discovers the serial killer is Mythrian and working on a ritual to free an ancient evil that none of her own kind were able to kill and only the Great Phoenix was able to stop. With no time to waste, Sha and Connor head into battle to attempt to stop the Mythrian.
My only problem is that the end was a cliff hanger and apparently the second book is not out yet. I simply have to read the second book to find out what happens to Sha and Connor.
How could you Lindsay Avalon??? I NEED to know what happens next!!
Breaking the Nexus is such a fascinating read. Lindsay Avalon caught my attention right from the start and kept my full attention until the very last page. I enjoyed the story plot and loved the character interactions. Connor Flynn is a detective in the Human Realm who is brought to the scene of a brutal murder. He has an instant connection to the one suspect in a savage murder. I just love Connor. He is so strong and just darn yummy! Sha is from the Mythrian Realm, a realm full of creatures thought to only live in our nightmares. She is suspected of being a serial killer and isn't sure how to explain where she really comes from. No one would believe her, or would they? I really loved watching Connor and Sha work together to find the answers to the mysterious deaths and see the connection they share develop.
Breaking the Nexus has everything you need in a book! Mystery, supernatural creatures, romance, sexual chemistry and an extremely interesting plot. I can't wait to read the sequel!!!!
What an adventure! From the first chapter of this book till the very end there is a ton of action there is always something going on and I completely loved it. The storyline is sexy, fun and full of action. I loved the banter back and forth between Sha and Sexy Connor, those two made me laugh so hard at times.
Sha is everything I look for in a female lead character, she is strong, stubborn and just tosses the rule book out the window and takes everything that comes at her! This is one badass girl you defiantly don’t want to mess with her! Detective Connor Flynn is a sexy human who must work with Sha to fix what has happened between the barrier of their worlds before it’s too late and all hell breaks loose and demons go on a killing spree. I’d defiantly recommend reading this! This was a great fantasy/Paranormal Romance.
Breaking the Nexus (Mythrian Realm) Breaking the Nexus by Lindsay Avalon
Sha an enforcer is thrown through the Nexus gateway during an explosion and lands right into a murder scene under human jurisdiction. The detective realizes that Sha is different what with the floating table but how is he going to explain the banshee? She opens his eyes to the things he thought was only in stories. They both are trying to fight the attraction to each other while searching for a mad creature bent on releasing an ancient evil into the world. This wonderful story has it all murder, mystery, excitement and hot steamy love scenes. I had no choice but to give Breaking the Nexus Five Stars because six were not available. Now I have to wait for the next book Waking the Phoenix. Bella Doerres M.Ed 01/22/2013
First thought, Sha is pretty badass, Connor, is gorgeous, and his partner Ian is a joker! "Heard you bagged yourself a pretty murder suspect and had a hot broad trying to proposition you, I always knew you were a regular cassanova." Sha that woman speaks her mind and I love female characters who aren't helpless and can fend for themselves! "Wasn't there something you wanted to, Detective? Or did you just want to have a staring contest?" I love how Lindsay writes it intrigues me, not many authors can do that, but I hate the cliffhangers and not knowing what's going to happen and whether or not everything works out and a happy ending (yes I like my happy endings). I guess I have to wait until the next book comes out to find out!
Lindsay Avalon Breaking the Nexus Book 1 in the Mythrian Realm series
Paranormal romance at its best.
I don’t normally like the “love at first sight” kind of books, they always seem so unrealistic, but it just seemed so natural in this one and I was glad when the main characters, Sha and Connor, fell for each other.
Incredibly well written and descriptive, this book had me gripped from the start and I just couldn’t put it down. With many twists and turns, the author cleverly worked out every detail so it flows smoothly and constantly keeps you guessing.
There is so much more to this story, and it’s going to be one hell of a roller-coaster as it continues. Now to patiently wait for Waking the Phoenix..........
I started reading this book because I seen all the reviews that it was getting and I heard everyone talking about it. I decided to download it and that was all I needed.
I started reading and couldn't put it down. I was taken to a new world that I had never been to before. Needless to say I wasn't there for long until Ferren takes me on a grand adventure. I never know what will happen next.
When Connor meets Ferren things change and you can tell that they are meant to be together. But will they have the chance to be together or will something that is completely out of their hands take their love away?
I really liked the book Breaking the Nexus by Lindsay Avalon. I have always loved reading as a child myths and legends. About waking up in a different realm where their were many different and fascinating creatures. The author did a remarkable job in letting me revisit my childhood fantasys. With a book that has fantasy and the paranormal you could never go wrong in my opinion. The story is about the Mythrian people that have magical powers who are extraordinary creatures that live in myths and legends. The imagery used in the descriptions of people and places transported me into another time. I was unable to put the book down and cannot wait for book 2 to be released.
this is a great read. loved the characters and the descriptions of scenery were just right; took you rite there. won't spoil anything but you will be wanting the next instalment asap!! well worth downloading so 5 stars :-)
Holy sugarplums I love this book! This is going to be one of my new favorites series!!! More than one world exists but what happens when they combine? Nexus vs the world! This is a fast paced read with violence, horror and erotica mixed in. This is a must read! WaAR
It's been a very long time since I've read a romance where the main characters were literally from two different worlds (The last one being a novella by Nora Roberts called A World Apart). Breaking the Nexus was a fun, fast paced fantasy romance that entertains on several different levels. It is action packed, funny, sexy and best of all, part of a series.
One thing I've found to be common among novels that contain elements of fantasy is the abundance of details. These authors, whether they be a strictly fantasy author or a romance author who sprinkles fantasy into their story, always include such vivid details that readers have no trouble picturing the world the author has created.
This can be a double edged sword though. A book filled with too many descriptive sentences can weigh the entire story down and bore readers to death. Breaking the Nexus thankfully does not overwhelm readers with unnecessary details. There is just enough imagery in this book to enhance a reader's experience but not too much where the book becomes slow and boring.
Author Lindsay Avalon created likable, interesting characters, even if their names are a little unbelievable at first (I still don't know if I'm pronouncing Sha's name right). However Breaking the Nexus IS rooted in a mythical "other world" that is supposed to exist alongside the normal, human realm. Sha Phoenix is a great heroine, she's smart, funny and a fighter. Though she finds herself in a world she's only read about and at a disadvantage, she doesn't let any one, even a certain hunky detective, mistake her for a damsel in distress. She may be in the human realm, but it's Detective Connor Flynn that's out of his element.
Just like Sha, I love the name Connor Flynn, sounds a little like a great kind of Scotch. He's tall, sexy and he carries a gun. Need I say more? He's doesn't deny the intense attraction between him and Sha but he is an honorable man and feels like he should first protect Sha (though she's capable of taking care of herself).
Breaking the Nexus is part of a series, and as such, ends on a cliffhanger. Definitely pick this book up if you're a fan of magic, tough heroines, sexy heroes and romance.
I don't read a lot of paranormal romance books, but this one certainly surprised me. The story starts in a fantastic parallel world, Mythria, where there are legendary creatures and all kind of magical things happen. Very soon, this world gets in trouble and Sha Phoenix, one of the sentinels, falls through a gateway and appears in the real world, in the human world. Detective Connor Flynn cannot even imagine that the hot woman who just appeared out of thin air in the crime scene he is investigating will be essential for the events that will happen later on.
As I said, this is paranormal romance, and the romantic elements also appear very soon in the book, when Connor and Sha falls almost instantly in love. They will discover they feel a very spooky connection and things will get hot between them.
The plot is a great one, very surprising and original. As for the characters, they are well developed, although their voices sound quite similar. Great story, with twists and surprises all the way, so you cannot stop reading. It doesn't abuse of descriptions too, which is a good thing. I have read some fantasy books that bored me to death with so many descriptive paragraphs and pages. About the ending... well... why, Lindsay? WHY? She uses such a strong cliffhanger that it is going to be almost impossible to wait until the second book in the series is out. Seriously, I read the last sentence and I said, "No! This cannot be then ending of the book!"
To sum up, I have absolutely loved this book. Why only 4 stars then? Well, I am sorry, but I found typos and wrong words.
All I can say is WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK COMING OUT!!!! This book had everything I love in a paranormal/mystery/suspense book. Everything flowed really well throughout and yea there are still questions unanswered but thats what makes you want to read more. All I can think about is whats going to happen in the next book. I can't wait to find out whats in store for Sha and Conner and the whole Nexus!!
Throughout history, myths and legends of extraordinary creatures have been told and retold. Fantastic tales of demons and banshees, gryphons and dragons, and of course, magic. Stories that every child grows to learn are nothing more than fantasy...or are they?

The Nexus is breaking and all hell is about to unleash...literally.
In this adventure to different realms we find Sha a very gifted magical creature. You know the kind you do not want to meet in an alley when she is angry at you, well except that she meets not only her mate but the character that plays opposite of her throughout the book, in an alley. I guess it could have been worse right she could have been mad at him, thankfully she was merely unconscious. The story goes that there is a new serial killer that seems to be killing ritualistically. The person that meets Sha in the alley is the investigating officer by the name of Detective Connor Flynn of the Denver police department. The two of them will spend the remainder of the book trying to understand how exactly she got there, why there are creatures from her realm in the human realm and how they can stop the villain from destroying the nexus and causing catastrophe to take over both realms. I liked this book a lot. I found the characters interesting and the plot exciting. I would have liked it to be longer but other than that the book took me through the story in such a way that I easily felt the emotions that inhabited the main characters. The romantic element was pretty hot as well. I am giving this a 4 out of 5 rating simply because I believe this book had the potential to be a lot longer.
I was given this book by the author for my honest review!
Connor Flynn is a detective who has a horrible murder scene and then you have Sha who is from Mythrian Realm. Sha realm has horrible creatures in it the ones that gives you goosebumps. Sha is accused of being a serial killer, I mean it's not like she can explain where she comes from. Who would believe her? There is so much chemistry between Connor and Sha, and Connor is so hot well yes he is in a book but the way that Lindsay Avalon describes him you can picture him in your mind. This is the first book I have read from this author and I know after reading this one I will be reading more of hers! I couldn't put this book down! When it ended I wanted to pick the second one right away but its not out yet :( Sha is a strong female lead who grabs your attention, you would think as thick headed as she is she would get into trouble sadly she doesn't. I don't know what it is but there is something in the air while reading this book, it will pull you in until you finish the book but sadly it leaves you wanting more.I finished this book in one night, it wasn't that long but it felt like it had so much going on that in the end it would feel like you read a 500 page book.
I was given this book by the author in return for an honest review. WOW!!! What an excellent story. A truly refreshing Sci-fi X Paranormal with a hint of eroticism. I loved Sha, she is such a fun and fantastic character. I loved following as she ends up in the earth realm an starts to fall for a human called Connor, who she then finds out has "Mythrian" roots was a fantastic twist. The erotic scenes were HOT. I cannot wait to read "Waking the Phoenix" and see what awaits them on the other side of the Nexus
If the fact that it only took me a few hours to read this book isn't a testament to how good it is I'm not sure what is. This story weaves a magical spell around the reader drawing them into Sha and Connor's world and doesn't release them. I immediately loved Sha. I love strong mouthy female characters. She was the perfect fit for this role and Connor. The action didn't seem to end. When they weren't fighting to save the world there was action in the bedroom or living room. Great book, I can't wait for the next one.
This was hands down an awesome book. I was sucked in from page 1 and it didn't let me go and definitley didn't disappoint me!
Loved the relationship between Ian and Connor and Luca and Sha. You could see the bond between the partners and it really came through how much they cared.
Connor and Sha was scorching!! Loved, loved them. The tension and heat radiated off the pages and left me in love with them!
What a beautiful told story, with a different plot that kept me coming back for more.
Can't believe this is Lyndsay's first book! I blew through it, couldn't put it down. I fell in love with Sha from the get go, what a spitfire of a woman! Her & Connor, simply delicious. The characters were fun, the book moved really quickly, not a dull moment. It takes a great imagination to come up with a Nexus and realms and Sorceri & Elven, this book was all I truly enjoy reading about. Look forward to book two, great job Lyndsay, hurry up I need to know what's going on in Mythria!
Two realms that cannot survive together, and two souls that cannot survive apart. Breaking the Nexus has it all, mystery, intrigue, action and romance. I absolutely loved the perspective. It was fun to be introduced to the Mythian Realm as any human should. The intricacies were explained as they became necessary. Bring on Book II. I'm hooked!
