It was my good fortune to take a class from Lewis Spitz in 1974. He was an accomplished academic and prolific writer who nonetheless showed a tremendous interest in undergraduate education. This was one of the assigned readings for the class. In my journal, I called it an “inspired survey” and wrote that it had sharpened my appetite for a closer engagement with Western literature.
