Possibly one of my favourite books I’ve read this year, if not ever-my favourite has to be 'Lazarus'. ‘You could not resist a miracle’. My God, I was absolutely floored. I ponder upon this book often- to me, this book is a reminder that words can indeed, be an art form that is fearfully and intrinsically weaved together.
The more I read contemporary poetry, the less I am inspired by the state of literature (I'm looking at you, Atticus). This book revived my joy. I also love that I found this book by random in a second hand shop, and that in these hidden places you can find gems of literature. Lerner portrays biblical characters with intimacy, with light. Growing up in church I almost see biblical characters like Jonah or Adam as moral figures, rather than historical people- but I love that this book adds layers to their personhood. They become, in a sense, alive. Sinful, confused, angry, bitter, loving, and truly just human. I am devastated Lerner is not alive anymore. One of the greatest underrated poets of our time.
