Have you ever been literally blown away by a book, so overwhelmed you're actually speechless? I have a few times, and this most certainly is one of those books.
I absolutely loved it, the plot, the story, the characters, the conflict, the tension, the guessing, the intrigue, the investigation...Everything.
And I find myself at a loss for words to describe just how much I liked it and why, without either sounding like a lunatic or giving away spoilers.
This was an intense, emotional, gripping, suspenseful story about a man who is shot, his surrogate son trying to grant him his "last wish" by finding out whether he sired an offspring twenty-eight years ago, only to find that offspring might in the end save the father's life.
There's a bunch of wonderful characters involved, with Carson Brooks, one of the three leads, literally stealing the show (I loved the guy - his stubbornness, his bluntness, his humor, his love of life and his two children, his matchmaking skills...I simply loved him), there's also the two bullheaded detectives that also had their multiple moments in the limelight, the tight and gripping plot with a suspense sub-plot serving as the driving force of the entire novel (and I'm so happy know I actually got the killer right - without any proof, of course, just gut instinct), the mystery was intense, the investigation even more so, death-threats galore, the motive came slightly out of the left-field, but worked perfectly, the romantic tension was thick, the hotness factor high...
I wasn't really sold on the pacing from the start, though, but I quickly realized it was done purposefully. It was deceptively slow, to keep the reader at the edge of the seat, keep him guessing, keep the pages turning, building the momentum for the grand finale.
I actually didn't want it to end, that's why I read a few other books in between - I needed a breather, so to speak, from the intensity of this novel. It was so good, I wanted desperately to know how it'd end, but didn't want it to end, because I wanted desperately to keep reading, to keep it going.
Not many authors have that affect on me, Ms. Kane is one of the lucky few. Both with her historical romances and now with her suspense novels as well. I can't wait to read more of her in this genre.

Romantic suspense, but the "suspense" part was almost nonexistent and the "romance" part could have been better developed. The main focus is on the victim and his newfound daughter. As for the murder investgation ... I guessed the villain early on and the ending was almost anticlimatic. On the positive side: it's well-written and easy to read. That's why I might give Andrea Kane's suspense books another chance...

Carson Brooks, brilliant CEO of Ruisseau, a perfume company, is shot in his own Office, and has only his surrogate son, and company lawyer, Dylan Newport to thank for still being alive, since the two are the only ones in the building. But the bullet has done a lot more damage, and Carson's kidneys are failing. One of the options, and probably the only one, if his kidneys don't start working properly on their own, is a transplant, which could prove difficult.
Before getting shot, Carson has put Dylan on a secret mission, one that becomes a prerogative as the man awaits his fate. Twenty-eight years ago, Carson was paid twenty thousand dollars for his sperm, money that he put into creating his company. Lately, after hitting fifty, he's started to wonder whether there was a fruit his seed helped create, and wants to know the truth. Especially now, that his days may be numbered. Dylan, on the other hand, wants to know if Carson is a dad out of purely selfish reasons—an offspring could be a perfect donor.
Enter Sabrina Radcliffe. The intelligent, brilliant young woman knows how she came to be, but now, suddenly, she has a name and face to put in the place of the question mark as to who the sperm donor was. But as she decides to get to know her father, and become involved in his life and company, and as love suddenly and unexpectedly blossoms, there is someone determined to finish what was started with that shot at Ruisseau...No matter what it takes.
This one was even better than six years ago when I first read it. And yes, once again, it has left me speechless.
I loved every single word of it, the plot, the story, the characters, the tension, the mystery, the intrigue, the drama, the romance...Everything.
This wasn't as suspense-oriented as Andrea Kane's previous books, since mostly all the action happened in the first chapter, with Carson being shot. That was also the most quickly paced part of the book; the shot, the race to the hospital, the race to stabilize Carson and find the possible kidney donor...
The pacing quickly slowed after it, only picking up sporadically, when danger rose to the fore once again.
Yet, as it always happens in Andrea Kane's romantic suspense novels, the slower pace didn't deter from the overall enjoyment of the story. And it certainly didn't dull it down.
In fact, it helped immensely with the world-building, and the character- and story development. Because the focus wasn't on the suspense and/or mystery, the reader could enjoy the characters, the relationship and interactions between them.
The romance was a bit more prominent in this one, and although it could've been categorized as rushed (everything happening in the matter of two weeks), I'm going with Sabrina's explanation; everything happened so suddenly, and so quickly, the emotions were so heightened, it seemed a lot more time has passed. The romance and its plausibility, was also helped by the two amazing characters involved in it. Sabrina and Dylan were rather perfect for each other, equals, mature, self-confident, and secure with who, what and where they were.
And they had a wonderful matchmaker to back them up if something backfired. ;) Carson Brooks was the star of this book, no doubt about it. He stole every scene he was in, even if the characters merely discussed him. I loved the guy to bits; his stubbornness, his bluntness, his humor, his love of life and his two children, his matchmaking skills, and his utter determination nothing would stand in his way, not even his defective kidneys.

Carson Brooks, a genius fragrance maker, is shot in his office and Dylan, his company counsel and surrogate son is there for him. When it looks like Carson may die at worse or at least need a kidney transplant, Dylan is tasked with tracking down the potential child that Carson may or may not have. As it turns out, he does. Dylan is impressed with Sabrina Radcliffe, who is so much like her father. She adapts to news of her paternity quite well and immediately agrees to meet him. Father and daughter bond immediately, as do Dylan and Sabrina. But the person who tried to kill Carson is still on the loose and may not be done trying to tie off loose ends.
This is a solid story, but not a fantastic one. There is a suspense story - or at least a mystery - and it is combined with romance between Sabrina and Dylan. But the majority of the story centers around Sabrina dealing with everything on her plate, including the murder mystery and the romance and alternates with the two detectives tracking down the killer. There isn't a lot of romantic angst really. Dylan and Sabrina sort of stumble into an attraction, put it off for a bit and then go for it, gung-ho style. Their scenes are pretty sexy, but definitely take a back seat to the story and their relationship causes absolutely no conflict for anyone but the killer. There also isn't much suspense...never really feels like anyone is in danger or that it's down to the wire. The police procedural part of this is average, but these characters are pretty good at whipping up stories of how things went with some pretty circumstantial evidence...and it turns out they're right. I didn't mind so much. I was entertained after all.

Andrea Kane's a favorite of mine. I love her work. This one, eh not so much.
It's not that the book's inherently bad. The idea itself was very intriguing and I loved the characters. More importantly, I loved the chemistry between the characters be it romantic or familiar. I had so much fun watching Carson and Sabrina develop a bond, as much I enjoyed the scenes with Dylan and Carson. There is so much genuine love among the group, quite frankly it actually makes my teeth hurt. Plus, I adored the romance between Dylan and Sabrina to bits and pieces. Did things progress in an escalated fashion between them? It absolutely did, yes. Do I mind? Nope, I very absolutely did not. I don't care at all because it worked for them. It wouldn't work for me, but it definitely worked for them, so who cares?
My biggest thing was it had a snail mail progression. The story, the investigation everything moved so slowly. I was 2/3rds into the book and still waiting for it to pick up. So for me that a was a bit of a draw back. Also, it wasn't all that suspenseful either so there's a bit of a mismarking that kind of throws me, so yeah. All in all it really just wasn't what I was expecting.
Even though it's not one of my favorites of hers it's still an entertaining read so have at it!

3.5 This is one of my favorite romance novels, because it is a bit more developed than usual-both for the story and the chemistry between the main characters. For the most part, I enjoyed the characters, the plot devices and the interpersonal dynamics.
My only real complaints about the book were that there was a bit too much made of the fact that EVERYBODY was rich, beautiful and brilliant. Additionally, and awful lot was made of the whole parental inheritance thing, with the usual, trite comments of "I get that from you," or "mom" or whatever-it was a bit much.
I would recommend to any looking for a contemporary romance, particularly one that is NOT part of a series-a feature which I found refreshing, and also for those looking for a bit of a deeper read.

La verdad es que me aburrí un montón.
El libro tenía todo para ser interesante, pero se volvió súper repetitivo y denso. Me molestaba bastante que la autora diera vueltas sobre el mismo tema una y otra vez, ni que hablar de que las situaciones eran totalmente irreales para un libro de romance contemporáneo.

I just loved this book. Really, you'd wonder how good(?) a book about fragrance would be. Well, let me tell you this one will keep your interest, and you'll find it hard to put it down.

I would have loved to give this book 5 stars, but there were a couple things that I felt took away from it's greatness.
I loved the idea of this book, it was very intriguing and quite the mystery all the way up to the end. I loved the chemistry between the characters and how it all turned out. However, I felt that the mystery unraveled so quickly at the end. It was as if the author realized she only had a few pages left to go and decided to let the mystery be solved within a page or two. I was very surprised by who the culprit was at the end, but quite disappointed with how it was all put together so quickly.
I also felt that the relationship between two of the characters escalated quite quickly but it was actually quite nice and made a funny ending to a generally thrilling book.
All in all, I really enjoyed this novel and I would love to read others by this author!

This was the first Andrea Kane book I ever picked up (library book sale) and I was drawn to the image on the cover. Looked intriguing, and the story didn't disappoint. Loved the premise, enjoyed the execution and although I wasn't too sure of the identity of the killer, I did find the olfactory angle interesting and a unique way to uncover clues.
A great, fast paced book. One I go back to a few times a year when I just want a comfort read.
Oh, there are also themes of organ donation.

I've read this one a few times. I enjoy Kane's books and this one has a unique, fun plot. The chemistry is instant and palpable between Dylan and Sabrina, but the timing couldn't be worse. Sabrina is meeting her father for the first time, said father is in the hospital after being shot, and the assailant doesn't seem to be done yet! To further complicate matters, her father is like a surrogate father to Dylan. Can they find and stop the killer before the killer stops them?

June 16, 2016It seems this came to me as an RABCK. It was an entertaining read, with an intriguing premise. I would have enjoyed more being made of the heightened sense of smell both father and daughter shared, and the Sabrina/Dylan romance was a bit excessively supersonic, but it was a good page turner. I stayed up too late finishing it on a work night....

A slow start ended with a fast finish. It took a while to get into this book but I really enjoyed it when I did. The characters were fun and snappy and I enjoyed the bantering among them. A good romantic suspense novel.

I really enjoyed this book. It starts with attempted murder and later there's another murder and more attempts. There's high stakes corporate intrigue and politics, and romance at the heart of the story.

I found myself at page 60 and realized that I had put this book down 3 to 4 times, a little bored and didn't really care who was behind the shooting. In the end this book just isn't for me.

I liked the way the author incorporated the sense of smell as a vital element of the plot in this novel.
