WILD☆ACT #2

Wild Act, Volume 2

Rate this book
Meet 15-year-old Yuniko Sakuraba, who is fixated on the late actor Akira Nanae-so much so that she's taken to burglary to collect items that once belonged to him. But Yuniko is not obsessed and twisted; she's actually cheerful and vibrant, soon drawing the attention of 17-year-old star Ryu Eba. Eventually, the two fall in love. In Volume 2, Yuniko meets her mother, actress Maiko Sakura, for the first time-but her mother suffers from amnesia and doesn't remember her. Yuniko is told by fellow student and aspiring paparazzo Maki Tatsumi that Akira Nanae is actually her father, and in this volume Yuniko races to secure proof of this allegation before Maki can find it. This series contains almost romance, humor, drama, mystery, action, high school, a perverted supporting character (thankfully little used), and animal mascots. Some plot points are a bit of a stretch, but the story as a whole hangs together because of Takada's nice artwork (reminiscent of Fuyumi Soryo's in Mars) and the genuineness of Yuniko and Ryu's emotions. Some nudity and sexual situations earn Tokyopop's assignment of the "Age 16+" rating. Recommended for most collections, especially for fans of Mars and Miho Obana's Kodocha.

Synopsis:

Freeze Frame

Yuniko discovers that her mother has amnesia and doesn't remember her! Yuniko is devastated, but she find surprising comfort in Ryu's company as their relationship starts to change.

When the school year starts, all Yuniko wants to do is stay out of the spotlight and in the shadows so she can continue collecting Akira's things. But this is when her real trouble begins, for an unscrupulous photographer plans to frame Ryu in a big scandal and only she can steal back the evidence to save him!

My Thoughts:

Volume 2 picks right up where volume 1 left off. Yuni has seen her mother for the first time in 15 years only to discover that her mother has no idea who she is. Yuni is understandably devastated, but Ryu manages to cheer her up.

After they spend the night together (nothing happens!), when they get back to Yuni's place, Sanae confronts them about spending time together again. He's very harsh about it, too and Ryu begins to keep his distance which pisses Yuni off, so she confronts him about it. He lets her know how he feels about them being apart by kissing her, which confuses her. It takes a while, but she eventually figures out that he still wants to be with her. He even helps her when she gets in a tight spot while trying to steal a reel of Akira's test videos for a movie as well as evidence that a shady paparazzi is trying to sell of Ryu and some girl. Only to find out that the girl in the photos is her!

Later, Ryu has a talk with Sanae about how he feels about Yuni and he and Yuni reunite as a couple. They're both so stubborn!

Before you know it, another crisis pops up when a schoolmate of Yuni and Ryu's sends her a note saying he knows the truth of her parentage. Yuni can't take it and passes out, but when Maki suggests she goes up to the school roof to find out the truth, she realizes it's all true! What will Yuni do now?

Series Review Mostly spoiler free. A bit of wrap up from Volume 10 but nothing that gives away any surprises.

I wish that Rei Takada was a little more realistic about Yukino and Ryu. I know fast romance is a shoujo thing, but they're unbelievably lovey dovey for the short time they've known each other.

Its also driving me nuts that every important male in the story looks like Akira Nanae. Even Sanae would look like him if it weren't for his long hair.
