Six Blind Elephants: Understanding Ourselves and Each Other, Vol. 1: Fundamental Principles of Scope and Category

Rate this book
This two-volume book presents a detailed "unified field theory" of experience, thinking, and personal change that goes beyond NLP to understand the structure of any experience or change of experience. If you ever find yourself out of choices-either in your own life, or in your work with others-you know how nice it would be to always have something to do next.

The fundamental distinction between scope and category offers a way to describe and track someone's experience-from ordinary troubles and difficulties to positive mystic experiences of union or oneness. The same knowledge provides surprisingly endless possibilities for changing your experience when you want it to be different. Rich with examples gleaned from a variety of different therapists and a lifetime of experience illustrate every aspect described.

I'm currently in a training where Steve Andreas is teaching. The book is a tremendous resource for understanding how people record, store and use experience. I highly recommend it.

If you are a person that facilitates change work in anyway, shape, or form...

you need to read this book.

It provides a framework for thought itself. Not only will it give you the ability to see how another person is organizing their world...it will give you the tools to help them see the world differently.

During the time of reading this book, I was doing a Provocative Change Works program with Nick Kemp, and it has cleared up so many things about the PCW model and NLP in general. Although being technical in large portions of the book, it feels like having a conversation with the great mind that is Steve Andreas. What I loved about the book is how is explains in detail why many processes work, and why many don't. It is filled with examples and exercises that allow coaches and therapists to improve their work and their own ways of thinking. It's a must read for professionals, some NLP background is helpful for readers who want to make the best out of it.
