Royal Fae #1

Royal Hunt

Rate this book
Eve was only trying to get out of horrible betrothal. At least, that's what she told herself when she snuck out onto the balcony during the royal feast, and had her wicked way with the first man she met.

How was she supposed to know that while that was going on, the royal family was being murdered just beyond the wall?

And the man she was with was a drunken, disgusting mess. There was no indication he was anyone at all of importance!

Yet keeping the new crown prince of the realm alive is only the beginning of her worries. With the murder of the royals came the fae; creatures with magick who descend every hundred years or so to force the humans underneath them to compete in death games. They call it the Royal Hunt.

Now it isn't just about saving the prince's life, but her own, and every human living in the kingdom.

The first introduction to the mmc was “a loud belch cut through the quiet night air, scaring the shit out of me” which resulted in an immediate dnf

Enjoyed this more than I expected. The FMC spent the whole book basically looking after the MMC, which was whatever, but I did like how competent she was and his personality on a whole. The death games were cool along with the fae vs human vs half-fae politics. I’m curious and confused about the ending. I guess seeing the fae realm will be cool in the next book.

Meh. If I could sum it up in one word.

I very, very, VERY rarely give anything lower than a 3 so…

There was a major lack of character building, events seemed rushed and the amount of spelling/writing errors caused me to come completely out of the story and I found it super hard to get back into it.

Like i say, not the worst book, I enjoyed the base of the plot and know it has a ton of potential if it were to have been properly explored but it felt very surface level. It almost seemed like events were skipped over and sometimes the dialogue felt clunky and didn’t suit the tones of the scenes.

Overall - I wouldn’t be reaching for a second book or wanting to know more. So, meh.

Did this even go through editing?

This book is riddled with issues, inconsistencies, and grammatical errors. There is some sort of a base idea for a story, but it doesn't hold up with the issues and ideas ripped off other popular books. Absolutely no development for character relationships either.

Ends on a cliffhanger. I will not be continuing this series.

It’s hard to rate this one because many would consider 3 stars an average rating, but I would not say this book is average in quality. There is a somewhat interesting plot going on there, and the characters are decent, but it’s overshadowed by the fairly poor writing overall and the spelling and grammar errors. It could benefit from some decent editing for sure, but without trying to be overly critical, the writing itself is too simplistic to make a huge impact. I get what the author is trying to do and say, but it’s just not quite there.

There were also some absolutely revolting moments, I’m thinking of you, chapter two. Please tell me why the FUCK we needed such detailed and frequent descriptions of a man hurling?? The part where she kissed him immediately after and then commented on how his mouth tasted should have been an instant dnf for me but god dammit he reminded me of Cardan and I felt compelled to give him a chance. He’s like if Cardan were nice on the inside and thought himself irredeemably pathetic. She spent most of the book looking after him because he was useless, and to be fair that is one of my favourite dynamics. I love seeing that trope flipped on its head. In fantasy books only mind. In real life I will not make time for useless men on principle.

Anyway I didn’t HATE it. I didn’t love it either and there’s a lot wrong with it. But it’s short and it did keep me interested for a few hours. I will be continuing to book 2, but not enthusiastically.

Annoying tropes NOT present in this novel:

FMC is not like other girls — the FMC is, in fact, a normal girl, the daughter of a baron who grew up on a farm. She does not pack a thigh sheath for her special dagger, nor has she trained with the boys swinging swords. If beset by a palace guard, she is unable to tackle him down to the ground with a burst of magical strength and agility and then stick a knife in his throat. She’s not the strongest, surest or fastest, and she lets others play to their strengths. What she does have is mettle, and the ability to press pause on an imminent freakout and think in a crisis.

MMC is a put-together shadow daddy dominant who knows everything before FMC does — his powers are NOT shadows (amazing, wow, so brave) and he’s honestly a hot mess, depressed, and is unconscious or going through DTs for 99% of the book. He’s also described as “too thin” and not at his physical peak, which makes sense, but also I eat up sad twinks like Pringles so I love it.

The MCs cannot keep their hands off of each other and to the point that it’s getting embarrassing — amazingly, after having their first rendezvous interrupted by the massacre mentioned in the book blurb, they somehow manage to find the strength to go 7 whole days without touching each other’s private parts.

Mean blonde ex-gf who is horrible to FMC — not present. Our FMC is so desperate to find someone to be jealous of, she ends up getting possessive over his lesbian cousin instead. Not that she knew either of those facts at first, lol.

FMC is torn between MMC and her old crush who is obviously bad news but she cannot see it for some reason — nope, she pretty much tells the guy where to shove it. Early and often. Picks up on his controlling vibes and points out his hypocrisy. And to his credit, outside of his relationship with the FMC, this Dain Aetos-like character is surprisingly brave, loyal, assertive and useful. He just seems to have a blind spot when it comes to his misogyny, which makes sense for the setting and is wonderfully human of him.

The people they’re pitted against are bloodthirsty villains who cannot be reasoned with — almost as soon as another option is presented, the other team in the Survivor-like battle royale thing stops trying to kill our MCs and wholeheartedly participates in breaking the game. The rules of the game end up working against the event’s organizers, in a stroke of non-combatant genius from our FMC.

Tropes that are present that I LOVE: Only One Bed, Touch Her And Die, fated mates (but not in a ridiculously insta-lusty way). I love authors who play with expectations of the genre, and the book totally hit that spot for me. It’s hyper-violent and kinda gross at times, but I can deal. Can’t wait to read the next book.

amazing!

I absolutely loved this book.
I was completely and utterly mesmerised by the storyline, it’s written with such detail and emotion.
The suspense and mysterious elements were brilliant, l love reading this genre as I’m always so surprised by the magical essence the characters hold.
The FMC, Eve was perfect, I loved her grit and determination.
Overall a fantastic book, can’t wait to get stuck into book 2

First DNF in years. I made it 26% and had to give it up. First red flag was hooking up with a guy that was puking minutes ago and having inner dialogue about how the sour taste wasn't that bad. 🤢

I stuck with it after that but the story was all over the place and couldn't decide what direction it was going. Had to put it down and move on to something better.

I wasn't expecting a lot as it was a TT reel that got me, and while the reel was a little misleading, this plot was goodish.

I wish the FMC did more than look after the Male MC, but yeh... she only does one cool thing the whole time, and that is when she saves someone from a knife being thrown( that person ends up dying a little later on anyways).
The smexy scenes are good, and i liked the male leads character. It ends on a cliffhanger, and by the second book reviews, the next book is worse. Feels like a mismatch of other books all put badly into one.

Powers out of control, drunk male lead, love triangle, eating "cake," battle royal, death, cliffhanger, betrayal, prophecy.

Last book of 2025, and WOWOWOW. I found this one randomly, took a chance on it, and I didn’t see how this was going to play out initially! By the time I got 65% in I was like 👀. Really fun time, love the characters.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t this. Multiple simple grammatical and spelling errors that should’ve been spotted. The plot is all over the place and it reads like a teenager wrote it. I like the initial plot and the first few chapters had a lot of promise but it got worse as I read on. It’s very fast-paced and seems like the author was just trying to get the book over with. There’s a few inconsistencies that you can’t get over and it’s really just all over the place. I finished it in a few hours just to get it over with. Wouldn’t recommend to a friend, tbh.

I really wanted to like this, though! I liked the plot and had a lot of hope for this one :/

I really liked that this book was constant action. When there were transition scenes, something pivotal happened that was outside just character building so it felt like it was just constant action. I thought the characters were ok, the scenes could get a little confusing but overall it was an ok book. I HATED the ending but get that it was required in order for there to be a book 2 I guess. But still not a fan of ending on a cliffhanger. Felt no resolution.

Even with only 274 pages, I was hate reading it by page 50. I hate almost everything about this book

1. The characters
There was no sense of character in any character in the book. It seems like the author just wrote the book as they went with no memory of what the character did beforehand. The characters in no way were fully-fleshed out. Actions or feelings that they had probably 3 pages earlier seems to have disappeared. Like if you realize they were a douchebag who treats you like property, WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU BELIEVE ANYTHING THAT THEY SAID IN THE NEXT SENTENCE???? The characters relationship to others were confusing and not at all realistic. Even the female main character's relationship to herself seems deeply questionable. At no sense did the dialogue seem plausible either. Every second I was in disbelief at what is being written. The beginning character does not make sense at all to who the character actually was, and not at all due to character development. I could not tell you who anyone is as a person. It is like I have a bunch of facts and no connection.

2. The pacing and structure
Everything happens within probably like 2 weeks. So think Twilight timing, but way less entertaining. The way it was written, it seems like things are happening at a much faster (but reads a lot slower) pace than what is going on. The book is also written within a singular POV from the FMC, but the tone and descriptions make no sense. It is like she does nothing when huge scenes are happening, has a single moment with a weapon, and then like scene over. The scene separations or whatever the author calls chapters made it seem like there was no actual structure to the story. Because there is no Act 1, 2, or 3. It is really stuff happens and then a day passes and then more stuff and then end. Am I being hateful? Sure. But informed hating is important.

3. Plot
What is the main plot exactly??????? Based on the title, you would think that the so-called "Royal Hunt" is the main plot but there were literally only about 1/3 of the book dedicated to it. In the last 70 pages, it seems they just literally threw up every single Romantasy troupe and plot buzzwords that they could to add even more confusion. I could not tell if the romance element was the main plot of supposed to be the subplot. Either way it was not convincing nor believable in any sense. Nothing about any of this made any sense. The character types and foils did not fit into the world that was created. The world-building and how it was presented was lunacy. It was advertised as Hunger Games-adjacent and that is disrespectful. If it was similar, it deeply simplified a message about governmental control and totalitarianism to literally people who did not like their current administration and blamed them for everything. There was no motif or even a sense of what the theme could be, other than idk men suck. If anything it was similar to the second act of Hamilton where people fight to be free but have no sense of purpose and idea on how to be free.

In summary, nothing makes sense. This was certainly a book and I certainly read it.

The premise of the story made me want to settle down and enjoy this book. I love messy characters and horrible tragedies, Game of Thrones truly corrupted me. This book starts off with all the promise from the premise. Eve doesn't want to get married so she sleeps with a drunk who's lurking away from a party. Then, the royal family are murdered and she realizes she slept with the family's worst prince. Perfect! Wonderful! Let's see how messy this can get!

But then the cracks in this book start. They first leave the castle, have to go back because the prince is curious, then they get dragged into a Hunger Games like competition... only it's the Hunger Games with zero thought in how death games would actually affect a society. Every hundred years the Fae come and kill people? And only one group is prepping for it? I don't know if the author understands how much tragedy can stain a population. It was unbelievable for me, but I pushed that down and continued to read. I love a good series of death games. It's like reading a good horror, I get to see what messed up deaths an author can think of... oh, wait. She couldn't.

The death games were a boring mess. You have a literal shot for shot 'go fight to death for your supplies' from the Hunger Games. Then the other games are 'Capture enemies in a cage and free your people from a cage', that game was very confusing and wasn't described well. The other, is literal dodgeball. Dodgeball in a medium fantasy book. There was one moment where the 'bad love interest' is described as grabbing one of the balls and exploding. I was suddenly interested... which was quickly lost when he didn't die.

When I read Hunger Gams like books, I'm expecting horrible gut wrenching deaths. Deaths that will shape characters and make them understand what they can be capable of. This didn't have that. Also the 'Hunger Games' potion of the book lasted less than 50% of the book. There was a section when one of the Fae joined the 'human' team and I thought Eve might join the Fae as a way to drive up the angst, it never happened and I feel cheated for a book that doesn't exist..

The ending of the games is so boringly spelled out. Like somehow Eve just asks the person running it why they're doing it and he gives the classic 'We must appease our idiot population to not overthrow us... oh no, I said that out loud and everyone is revolting'. It's a cliche and I had wanted something more. With how the book ended I almost wish this was a duology and we moved to the ending first before all the annoying middle part of this book.

I'm still on a hunt for a good fantasy romance, but I'll keep looking. I only recommend this if you're supremely bored and need a fast brainless read.

Plot: 4/5
Spice: 3/5
Violence: 5/5
World building: 3/5
Overall: 4/5

First I would like to address the fact that yes, this book has some grammatical and spelling errors. I'm hoping that the author is taking feedback and is interested in correcting this in future editions of this book since, it would seem that it is a large reason this book is getting a lower star rating from some readers.

However, there is a good story here. So far anyway. So I give it four stars. I enjoy that this book moves along quickly, maybe a little too fast at times jumping forward without any notice. Anyone looking for steam, slow burn or really much of any type of romantic tension, it's not really in this book probably because 85% of the story takes place over a few days in which most of the main characters are in a prison pen fighting for their lives. There is some nice character growth throughout and a lovely unfolding of a story about a group of humans and halflings who are unaware that their whole lives have been manipulated for the entertainment of a fae kingdom.

I plan to read the next book in the series because sometimes it's fun to just sit back and enjoy the story.

I’ve rated the book based on my enjoyment rather than the quality of the content! Honestly genuinely really enjoyed this book, binged it in less then a day! Quite enjoyed the main character, she was a refreshing change from a lot of the FMC I’ve been reading recently who saves the MMC rather than being the one saved.

I wish I could give this a book a five but there are some flaws that kind of pulled me out of the story. It could a good editing session, there was a lot of misspelled or wrong words used. For example a few times the word fan was where fae should of been. Also the wrong names were sometimes used which made certain scenes a little confusing at one pointed there’s a combo of Lily and Lyra name’s and one of them is referred to as Lilya. It could also benefit from more fleshing out of the world/slash plot. The fast pace worked great for a binge read but I would of loved the to be a fuller story as it felt kind of all
over the place with how quick each plot point would occur etc.

I enjoyed this. It was fast paced, the characters were sassy and interesting, with lots of humour thrown in and the story didn't shy away from the realism of some of the situations even if that's a little jarring at times (if realism is a word you can use in a fantasty book). Its intentionally unpolished unlike a lot of books in similar genres. It was twisty, I recommend going in fairly cold beyond the main premise of the story.

Lost a star for me because of the violence was upsetting (I read and watch my fair share of dark stuff so I don't say it lightly) a lot of it is in context but some overdoes it to the point of being gratuitous particularly towards the start.

Overall though a good read and I'm intrigued by what happens next

It's so bad

I'm sorry. I hate to leave a bad review. I hate read this book. The FMC is childish, immature and stupid. She does stupid stuff. Like running head strong in to a fight she cannot fight. Literally just to get others killed. And then making rash decisions.

Also why keep the nobles around when they killed your entire family. Killed you 10 year old sister and you had him eating at your table?

It says dark romance. Nothing dark about it more like sad humour. More like laugh or cry. This book doesn't know what it is. Between hunger games and squid games. Human vs fae.

This needs a re write.

not good.

So many things. The advertising hook to read this book was slightly misleading. The main male character is an alcoholic and the main female character has no issues with this. She meets him and seduces him when he’s blind drunk and covered in puke. No problem there for her. Then suddenly they’re in these strange Hunger Games style death games based on children’s games?! Like dodgeball. Games also somehow ends like in the hunger games. It’s just all around too many connections to current pop culture. Not to mention all of the typos and grammatical errors. It was brutal.

Good to binge once all books are out

The premise and story is compelling and sets it apart from other books in this oversaturated Fairy lover market. HOWEVER, books should be able to stand alone and not be propped up by the series as a whole. Having the ending where it is makes it seem as though the book cut off halfway through what should be just one longer book. The ending is frustrating and doesn’t leave the reader satisfied with what they’ve just read. Like I said above, great to binge once the series is completed but not worth it beforehand.
