Set in the late 1950s Louisiana, a young African American female teenager who attends a segregated school gets repeatedly raped by her middle aged white principal. This goes on for a few months and he eventually stops. She graduates and vows to never go back to the South, namely Louisiana. Years have gone by and she's married and living in New York when she finds out her mother has died of breast cancer. She returns for the funeral and unexpectedly meets an familiar stranger from past at the most unlikely of places.
