When the Rooster Crowed by Patricia Lillie (Greenwillow Books 1991) (Children's). This is a book that my three children adored growing up, and they all remember fondly the gentle story of what happens when it's time to wake up on the farm. The cows, the pigs, the horses, the rest of the animals, the farmer's wife, and finally the farmer all have to wake up so that the farmer can do his chores, feed the animals, and can then sit down to a great big country breakfast! I loved this book too, and it's included in my reading list here so that I can make sure that each of my future grandchildren begins life with a properly stocked library. My rating: 7.5/10, finished 1996. We own a (HB) copy in good condition that my kids received as a gift in 1996. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Bookshelf Mentor Writing Traits:
Organization - The book is organized to create a flow from the calmness at the beginning, to the main event in the middle of all the animals making noises, and an ending resolution of the farmer having breakfast. Lillie transitions from each page with visually similar sentences that make the reader think more and more about what animal or event will happen next.
Conventions - The book uses correct conventions throughout the story. Lillie has ensured capitalization, punctuation and grammar have all been used appropriately. Each page has animal sounds with quotation marks, and a clear layout to help the reader understand what is happening.
This would be a great book to help students understand rising and falling action and how they affect a book’s tone and meaning. The book begins with a sole rooster making a sound, and slowly develops until the animals are making as sound and the farmer is rushing around with all the jobs he has to do. Finally, the book’s action decreases and is resolved by the farmer being able to sit down and eat breakfast.
This one was kind of meh, but it was fun to make the different animal sounds as the farmer asks for a few more minutes sleep before feeding his farm animals their breakfast.
This book is excellent when discovering sounds that animals make. It takes place on a farm where a farmer is not ready to wake up. His farm animals attempt to get him up by calling out their individual sounds. Math is also an important part of understanding this book. It is clear that the farmer is waiting for 6:00 am to come around to finally wake up. When the animals try to wake him up earlier, he responds with time terms such as wake him up in 10 minutes and wake him up in half a second. Also, the clock that appears in almost every scene with the farmer reminds students of what a clock can tell us. Recommended grade level: Pre-K to 1
This book is about a farmer who doesn't want to get out of bed and all the animals are making noises one by one and he keeps saying a few more minutes. His wife starts calling him too ad he says one more second. Finally all the animals and the wife call for him at the same time and he wakes up gets his chores done and eats breakfast.I think this book focuses on responsibility. We can;t stay in bed all day because there are things to be done!
Albert the farmer, wants to sleep in a bit late; however, his wife, and the animal on the farm have other plans. Poor Albert! This book can be taught when teaching a lesson on the concept of time. Great for Kindergartners when learning animal sounds.
Probably doesn't happen very often that a farmer sleeps in and has all the animals making their noises to wake him up, but when he gets up, he sure does get things done quickly to be able to sit down to breakfast with the family. Great for kids learning their animal noises.
When the Rooster crowed is a fun and quirky book about doing your job. It teaches that we must stay motivated even when we do not. It shows what could happen when you do not listen and ignore things around you.
