Plastic Hearts

Rate this book
My life has always been safe. I like it that way. I grew up in a fake society where plastic hearts rule. If our hearts are made of plastic, they can never be broken. My parents have expectations and I do everything I can to meet them, even if it means giving up on my own dreams.

Now, all I want is to be free to make my own choices.

Dane Wright is everything I have been warned to stay away from. We met one night while I was with my perfect, parent-approved boyfriend and I haven’t stopped thinking about him. I don’t want to like him. I am doing everything I can to ignore his pull, but my heart seems to want what it cannot have, what it has never had.

Can he measure up? He may think I am too good for him, but maybe he is too good for me.

Life is a series of choices and I have never been able to make my own. Until one day, when my heart decides to make a choice for me.

Plastic Hearts are made so they cannot be broken. Cracked maybe, but never broken.

I honestly had so much fun reading this book! It was a largely character-driven story and the author did an incredible job bringing these fictional beings to life. The flirtatious dialogue and adorable banter made me giddy and allowed me to sink completely into the story until I was entirely swallowed up by it.

Alexandra Riley and Dane Wright stem from opposite ends of the social and economic spectrum. Alex lives her life robotically to please her over-bearing, rich parents, while Dane uses his broken and unfortunate childhood as motivation to live freely in the moment. Dane is not only someone of whom Alex's parents would disapprove, but also poses the ultimate threat of shattering Alex's perfectly 'plastic' barricades...

Dane was the most exciting and scariest thing to ever enter my plastic world.

Dane's persistence and determination to Alex's initial stubborn brush-offs was adorable and oh-so-sexy! Alex was both repulsed and turned-on by Dane's overt cockiness—and I must say that I loved the chase, as well. The build-up and lack of insta-love was refreshing.

Do you ever leave your arrogance at home or does it follow you wherever you go?

The pacing of this story was perfection; nothing was rushed or felt forced, but it also wasn't too slow where I became bored. Alex's character was believable and relatable. Although she was a virgin, she didn't have that naive innocence that many heroines possess. Dane was truly book-boyfriend material—sexy, sweet, with delicious alpha-undertones! I loved his confidence and the fact that he was determined to make a life for himself.

I truly enjoyed the theme of self-discovery and the courage to follow your heart despite the consequences. Alex and Dane had an inspiring connection that, many times, had me melting with its intensity. Although their journey isn't over, this story kindly does NOT leave off on a cliffhanger. Excellent read!

When you let your heart carry you through life, you're never alone.

3 PLASTIC STARS.

description>

A debut novel that sadly didn't make me sit up and take notice, I wanted to love this book, but unfortunately it fell a little flat for me ...

What's it all about ...
Alexandra is caught in a life of fakery, surrounded by her country club class parents, friends, boyfriend and lifestyle, Alex finds herself questioning all that she has ever known and heads to college towards the unknown. Moving away to college has given Alexandra a taste of freedom that makes her former life seem unbearable. 'plastic hearts' is a love triangle of the classes, a coming of age story that shows a life of changing transition, boundaries pushed, learning about yourself and ultimately the chance to leave a life of plastic behind.

The characters ...
Alexandra 'Alex' Riley is a confident, privileged, studious girl, she has her life ahead of her and everything to gain from a fresh start away from the pressures of her overbearing parents and 'perfect' persona. As I have mentioned above the focus of the story is about the changes that this character wants to make towards her life and the sacrifices she faces in moving over from her parents approval. At the beginning of the story we see Alex as a people pleaser mainly focusing on granting her overbearing parents every wish and demand over her life. I wanted to find something endearing about this character and at times throughout the book I saw glimpses of a like-ability, but ultimately she annoyed me, I found myself frustrated at most of the decisions she made. But for every not so likeable heroine is a loveable hero ...

Dane wright, is a character I loved he was honest, sincere, vulnerable and followed his heart. He is the ultimate in tattooed bad boy makes good and I fell for his charms. I wished I could have loved both characters equally, but sadly it was not to be. Dane is a character who has had to work hard for all he has achieved in his life and I loved how the author gave the bad boy the biggest heart and ultimately he shone through as a great character.

What did I like ....
The likeable bits for me were the charming first chance love story, i think the author did a great job of showing the connection between the two characters, it felt genuine and heartfelt. This author has also placed a great message within the pages of this book, to follow your heart and dreams and be all that you are destined to be and I applaud that message, it deserves a star in itself.

“Life inspires me. Life is unfair, unkind and unforeseeable. It knocks you down when you least expect it.”

“Mistakes make us who we are.”

“I wanted to live with hope; I wanted to love with my heart and turn my dreams into reality.”

Final thoughts ...
For me this story had glimpses of a four or five star storyline, but in my opinion lacked something to make it a fully enjoyable read. As I've already mentioned I really connected with the hero of this book, sadly I'm finding too often that authors are creating annoying female leads and it takes out the enjoyment factor of a book for me. I don't want to be all negative though as I know this book will appeal to others. Give it a go, try it out hopefully this will tick your boxes where it didn't for me.

"plastic hearts are made so they cannot be broken. Cracked maybe, but never broken."

Just 3 stars for me this time.

Lisa De Jong's debut novel was well done and made for a good read!

Plastic Hearts is the coming of age story of Alexandra Riley. She is a college freshman who has followed her plastic parents’ plans since birth. She is studying medicine at NYU while she dreams of a career in art. Alex has never defied her parent’s expectations. She is a rule follower and a people pleaser. Alex is dating her longtime friend Ryan but there aren’t any sparks. While dancing at a night club she meets a Sexy Stranger who later appears in her art class…Dane Wright. Slowly Alex starts to question the path her life is on and wonders if she is brave enough to make choices of her own.

description

Dane Wright has lived a tough life, but he is on a steady course. He knows who he is and what he wants. He lives like no one is watching and for the first time in his life he is head over heels in love. Alex sees so many things in Dane: he is strong, driven and supportive. Their love for art and for each other made for a sweet journey. Oh by the way, Dane is pretty hot as well ladies!

description

When faced with an ultimatum from her parents will Alex be strong enough to make a choice?

Can she stand on her own for the first time?

Can she let true love and her dreams slip away just to please others?

I enjoyed Plastic Hearts and I am excited for the continuation of Dane and Alex’s story in Glass Hearts. Please note that this is not a cliffhanger ending.

Plastic hearts are made so they cannot be broken. Cracked maybe, but never broken.

 photo 8872b4f1-4a50-46f8-b9a3-55d1e3890a84_zpsc126d888.jpg
Alexandrea Riley’s life was completely planned out for her. She was going to be a doctor. She was going to marry someone who was in her parent’s social circle. If she didn’t live up to these expectations, there would be consequences. She was going thorough the motions, but not really living. She wasn’t happy. She wanted more. Alex is dating Ryan, one of her best friends, but she didn’t feel anything but friendship. She wants to feel.
I wanted the type of love I could feel from head to toe, the type where I felt every kiss deep down in the pit of my stomach, the type where the mere mention of his name made me smile from ear to ear and ignited a passion within me so strong, that even on our worst days our love was better than any other love around us.

Her future was completely mapped out for her, but meeting one person would change all of that.

Dane Wright has had a broken past. He has made a lot of good choices, now he is working, going to school and living the life he wants to live. Alex and Dane have an Art class together. Art is a passion for both of them. Dane sees through Alex right away. He can tell she wants more in life, and he wants to give it to her. Alex is hesitant to get involved with Dane. She knows it can’t be permanent due to her parents, and she doesn’t want either one of them to get hurt.
“I’m afraid of falling in love. I’m afraid of loving someone so much that if it ends; there will be nothing left of me. There would be nothing that could be put me back together.”

Eventually, she can’t resist Dane. They are together and Alex is happier than she has ever been. For the first time in her life, she feels free to be herself.

Alex’s parent’s don’t stay in the background for too long, and when they give Alex a ridiculous ultimatum, it leaves Alex and Dane a wreck.
The time they are apart...

I shattered someone who was already broken.

Dane teaches Alex that she can’t live her life for other people and even if it feels like she doesn’t have any choices, there is always a choice. Alex makes the right choice when it comes to her life, but at the end will it be too late?

 photo 0d193067-7234-4639-9b9c-29490a515194_zpsb07e60da.jpg

I was impressed with this book! Alex drove me crazy at times, but I sympathized with her situation, I think she made some messed up choices, but in the end- I was happy with her. Loved me some Dane! He was a ‘bad boy’ with a heart of gold! So patient, loving and understanding. Can’t wait to get more of Dane in book 2! A great story that is emotional at times, but will leave you with a smile on your face!

Love isn’t about what you have or who you know. It’s about how you earn what you have and how you treat those you love.

Alex is away at College studying pre-med. Both her parents and her sister are doctors and it has always been expected that she will follow suit and pursue a medical career. She has grown up in a home where money was plentiful but love and acceptance was absent. All of her conversations with her parents are clinical and demand things from her. Things she no longer wants to give them.

‘Every now and then, someone would tell me they wished they had my life. I may have a nice house, expensive clothes and a generous monthly allowance, but my life was nothing to envy. I would trade it all in a heartbeat for a bit of positive attention from my parents.’

You see, her dream is to be an artist but the thought of going against her parents plans for her future is just too overwhelming. It even goes as far as mapping out her future husband. Alex has recently started dating her childhood best friend but he is going to be miles away at another college so a long distance arrangement probably won’t work that well. Alex has also figured out that being just friends with him is probably all she should be.

In an effort to fit in at her new home for the next few years, she agrees to go out dancing with her roommate. Alex loves dancing, giving herself over to the music and forgetting about everything else in life. This is where she first crosses paths with Dane when he tries to get close to her on the dance floor. The next time she sees him is in her elective art class she is taking this semester, just to make her other classes more bearable.

Dane’s life could not be more opposite to Alex. He grew up in a single parent household, his mother is an alcoholic and he had to help raise his younger brother until he left home. There are some other things he has had to overcome before starting college that only add to his determination to make something good of his life.

The one thing these two do have in common is a passion for art and a desire to have a successful independent life. Dane is the complete opposite of who Alex’s parents would want her to be with. He is a bit rugged, absolutely gorgeous and has a lot of amazing tattoos. He can never meet her family, it would end badly for both of them.

Over time though, Dane manages to show Alex he is a truly genuine guy. He has never wanted to be with someone as much as he does Alex, it’s like she was made for him and he knows she feels the same connection. Dane is right about that, Alex has never felt so drawn and turned on all at once. He is one big package of forbiddenish that she wants a huge bite of. Apart from his incredible looks, he challenges her beliefs and is showing her there is a better way to live.

‘When you find someone you truly love, nothing else matters. I finally realized that being in love was worth the heartbreak that may follow. Nothing compared to how he made me feel and I was ready to feel more and try everything with him.’

Alex needs to start making changes and stand up to her parents if she is to ever get the future she so longs for. She can see great things ahead and they all include her being with Dane.

Plastic hearts are made so they cannot be broken. Cracked maybe, but never broken.

An absolutely beautiful book. I was really feeling the need for a bit of back-to-school/college, teen/young adult romance and Plastic Hearts totally filled that spot.

This was such an easy read for me. It flowed, it was engaging, I liked the characters, it was well paced and I didn't want to put it down.

Quick Outline:
Alexandra Riley's parents have her life mapped out for her. She is expected to become a doctor, marry a man they know and approve of and be the perfect little daughter. And until now, she has seen no choice but to go along with their wishes. But college is opening her eyes and she is gradually beginning to see that there is more to life than status and money.
When she ends things with her parent-approved, childhood-friend boyfriend, Alexandra starts to discover Alex, the real her. The her who would rather put paint to canvas, than study Pre-Med... And the her would rather take a chance on cocky, tattoed bad boy, Dane Wright, than date the polo-shirt-wearing, good boys that her mother has lined up for her.
Plastic Hearts is Alex's journey of self discovery and the choices she has to make along the way. Can both sides of Alex's life meet in the middle or will she have to forfeit one for the other?

This man standing in front of me right now could break me into a million pieces, but if I didn't let him in I'd never feel that deep down in my stomach kind of love; I'd be forever unbreakable.

I know some people think they are overdone, but I love a 'good girl meets bad boy' story! I could read them all day long. And this was no exception. I can't get enough of the good-girl who gets roughed up around the edges and the bad-boy who comes good for his girl! It never gets old.

He was everything I didn't think I could have and somehow, he'd become everything I needed.

Dane is cocky, arrogant, super sexy and just a little bit naughty. Like a lot of these characters, he's got a dark past and some dangerous secrets.

Dane was the most exciting and scariest thing to ever enter my plastic world.

But he falls head over heels for our girl Alex and is utterly adorable in his pursuit of her. Is there anything quite like a hard-man that knows exactly the right thing to say?

"Do you want a big wedding?"
He pulled back and looked right into my eyes. "I didn't want a wedding at all until this certain girl popped into my life. Now I want whatever she wants. I would do anything to make her happy."

Alex is likeable from the beginning, but clearly needed bringing out of her shell. However, I think the author did a great job of writing her, with a mixture of hesitation and intrigue when it came to Dane. She wasn't irritating and she resisted his advances just long enough that it didn't draw out and make me want to poke her between the eyes. The book begins when Alex starts to take charge of her life, which I think makes the reader connect to her from the get-go.

I wanted the type of love I could feel from head to toe, the type where I felt every kiss deep down in the pit of my stomach, the type where the mere mention of his name made me smile from ear to ear and ignited a passion within me so strong that even on our worst days our love was better than any other love around us.

There are no nasty surprises in the book, it's pretty easy going, but I did shed a little tear at one point. And I'm thrilled to find out that there is a #2, Glass Hearts, which I understand is a continuation of Alex and Dane's story. But never fear, this book does have a happy ending... the characters just have a long journey ahead of them, which I can't wait to read more of.

After i read this book i had to sit and think about what I wanted to say in my review.

Almost immediately I thought of one of my favorite quotes.

Perfect. That quote is what this story is all about.

Alex Riley has had the perfect life. Parents that give her every materialistic object anyone could ever want. They bought and gave her a car, they gave her multiple credit cards, paid for her schooling, send her a rather large allowance every month. She grew up in a huge home with multiple nannies. She knew exactly what her future would be; Becoming a doctor, marrying a friend of the family who is ALSO becoming a doctor and raising little doctor children.

But Alex wanted more than that. She didnt want the money. She wanted her parents unconditional love, she wanted freedom to be who she was and who she wanted to be. She wanted to be an artist. But Alex was afraid to go against her parents because she knew that if she ever did- they would disown her. So, she only did what they wanted. Leaving her depressed.

Until she met Dane.

Dane was the opposite of the type of guys Alex should be interested in. If her parents ever met Dane they would automatically hate him and tell Alex that she could not be with him...

But Alex couldnt walk away. For once she was going to give into something her heart wanted more than anything.

What started with Dane was supposed to just be an "experience." It was suppose to just be a thing that Alex could always remember and say she felt something "real." But what happened changed her. She fell in love.

Dane is everything that balances out Alex. He's artistic. He's tattooed. He's confident and does whatever he wants to do. His childhood was very different than Alex's. His mother had to work two jobs just to keep them on their feet. His father left them. His little brother was a wreck.

Both Dane and Alex never got the kind of love children deserve... But they find love with each other. A strong, passionate, neverending kind of love.

But... What happens when Alex is faced with choosing between her parents and everything they have control over and true love. What if staying with the one she loves can only harm him more? What if she truly thought the only way to make other person happy was to let them go?

“To all those who’ve ever had a dream and reached for it…”

This is a very sweet story about a young women struggling with what she has always done and been and what she really wants to do and become.
Dane Wright, the ultimate NA genre tatted bad boy sexy hero, wants to help her on her road to discovery. In fact - “We can’t be friends, I meant that,” he stepped closer to me, never breaking eye contact. “I want you to be my girl”

And boy does he ever. Dane does everything possible to convince Alex that she is special and deserves to live the life she should instead of the life her parents want for her, a ‘plastic life’ as she calls it.

Okay… so the journey is not so easy. Alex tries to deny her love for Dane and she makes some very stupid choices… Ugh! However, Dane was surprisingly and uncharacteristically too perfect and patient, my heart broke for him and I was about ready to jump in and tell him to forget Alex and move on. But with time and support of Alex’s best friend, Jade and her sister Gwen, Alex opens her eyes and her heart completely and makes choices based on what she truly wants.

Is it too late to repair the hurt and devastation she caused Dane? Will she succumb to the pressures of her parents’ plastic world?
You will have to read this book and find out.

"My plastic heart became glass the day I met Dane Wright"

*I have been cyber reading buddies with the author for almost a year so I am beaming with pride over her book. I can’t imagine the time, energy, heart and pain going into writing a full-length novel. But she did it, and she did well… she had a dream and reached for it!

Nice job, Lisa!!

I freaking loved this book! As soon as I saw the cover I knew I wanted to read it!!
The plot of Plastic Hearts had so much in it! It is about finding love, standing up for yourself and following your heart! The plot made me laugh, cry and smile! It was so cute and I fell in love with it!
The characters were written amazingly and I really enjoyed all of them! Alex was the main character and Plastic Hearts was written from her point of view!
I loved that Alex was completely down to earth and I especially loved it when she finally stood up to her family or else she would lose what she really wanted!
I fell a little bit in love with Dane, he's a gorgeous, funny sweet man!!
You must read it!!

4.5 Stars for this incredible story about life and what it means to follow your heart.

Plastic Hearts was a true joy to read.

Alex is a young college freshman who has spent her entire life doing exactly what is expected of her. Her parents are pretentious snobs and only care about how their daughter makes them look. Alex feelings don't matter and it broke my heart to see the internal struggles Alex had to deal with on a daily basis. I instantly saw some of myself in Alex. I understood the need to want to please everyone and to have an unhealthy habit of putting everyone else's feelings above your own. It was a pleasure to watch Alex steadily grow throughout the story and finally come into her own.

Eye contact had always been an issue for me; I was afraid someone would see through me and would realize that I wasn't who I pretended to be.

Dane was a wonderful character to read and I adored his every word. He showed Alex the life she could have outside of the one she was leading. A life full of love, passion and want; something she never knew or thought she could have before him.

"He was disrupting my quiet existence and I was fighting between annoyance and excitement."

De Jong did a wonderful job making the necessary transitions throughout the story. Nothing felt forced or rushed. I recommend this book as a must read. It's about fighting against the odds and relishing in what makes you happy. And of course, how love will always be the guiding force.

When you let your heart carry you through life, you're never alone."

Okay I need to take some deep calming breaths before I dive into the emotions that are rolling around in my brain right now. I go into every book with the anticipation that I am going to love it…I’m an optimist! Most of the time it works out (yay me!) – then I run into books like Plastic Hearts that BLOW. ME. AWAY. with the awesomeness that I read and was completely emotionally unprepared for.

I had been keeping up with the teasers on Lisa’s FB author page…I was sold on reading Plastic Hearts from the beginning – count me in, it sounded awesome. So when I got an ARC, I won’t hide it…I squee’d. ARC’s = bookworm crack…and books like this are my ultimate, reel me in, chew me up, spit me out and leave me begging for more kind of addiction. The characters, the story line, the writing…I hated when I had to put it down – why do people expect you to actually DO things when you have more important things like reading awesome books to do??? UGH!

So Plastic Hearts is about Alex and Dane. Alexandra Mirabelle Riley - gorgeous name, right? Well it matches an equally gorgeous 19 year old girl that I liked from the beginning and over the course of the book, I grew to love more and more. I loved watching her grow from “Alexandra” (the perfectly polished shell her parents wanted her to be) into Alex (who she truly was). Granted, she pissed me off a couple times – but come on, how many heroines exist out there that we don’t all want to shake a little and say “snap out of it chick!” It’s bound to happen…but I didn’t hate her for the choices she made…I hated the fact she had to make them in the first place…and more than that, I hurt for her that she had to make them at all.

“I wanted the type of love I could feel from head to toe, the type where I felt every kiss deep down in the pit of my stomach, the type where the mere mention of his name made me smile from ear to eat and ignited a passion within me so strong that even on our worst days our love was better than any other love around us.” ~Alex

Dane…Dane Wright – omg this man (I say his a man, he’s 22 – but DAMN, he doesn’t act like it!). What do I love about Dane…where do I start:
1. He’s 6’2”
2. Gorgeous Green Eyes
3. Yummi-licious to the MAX
4. Tattoo’s
5. Motorcycle
6. He’s artistic - plus he makes art using power tools…omg…drooling…
7. He’s motivated - going back to college all on his own
8. He. Say’s. The. Most. Perfect. Things. Ever

Okay….I’ll stop – but seriously…I love him. SO much. I can’t put a picture to Dane right now, he’s this figment of perfection in my head, trying to match someone up to him seems extremely unfair.

“This isn’t arrogance, I’m just honest and soon enough you’ll be honest with yourself and admit that you want me as much as I want you.” ~Dane

Oh Dane...believe me, I'll be honest, I want you.

And don’t get me started on Dane’s kisses…I just can’t handle it right now…when I say this boy is book boyfriend dream, I mean it in every sense of the word.

So anyways, back to Dane and Alex - I looooooved their love…the way they fell in love, the way she opened up with him and became more “herself” around him, the way he opened up and changed too (cause of course he’s Mr. Bad Boy – like I couldn’t swoon anymore!). They just had an easy, wonderful kind of love…

But even Dane with all his fabulousness, couldn’t protect me from *insert dramatic drum roll please* Catherine Riley – Alex’s mom. How can I describe Catherine Riley…

She’s horrible…evil…hate that woman…loathe her…she’s like Becca/Leah standard of horrible human being except Alex can’t escape her, cause it’s her mom! Her dad’s not much better…it’s a miracle Alex survived coming from those people. They are the ones forcing Alex to be this pristine image of what they want her to be, leading the life they want her to live – right, cause that’s a GREAT way to be a parent. It doesn’t help that Alex is measured up to her sister Gwen constantly, because the eldest daughter can do no wrong. So it should come as no surprise, they are the cause of the turmoil in an otherwise happy existence…GRRR! Just thinking about it makes me want to scream!

But enough of the ass holes – back to brighter things – like Alex’s best friend Jade…could not get enough of her! Can she be my best friend?? Cause she kinda rocks. And how CUTE is it that she just so happens to hook up with Dane’s best friend Tyler. (FYI…I will be begging Ms. De Jong to write a Jade/Tyler book – I know their story is juicy and I must know it ASAP). And speaking of Tyler…there is a scene with Tyler, Jade and Alex….and all I have to say is…

So…I’ve just recently become obsessed with highlight things in my kindle…and I do know I love a book when I highlight the CRAP out of it…and OOOOOH boy, there were some pages I just wanted to drag my finger across and paint ‘em yellow!

“Plastic hearts are made so they cannot be broken. Cracked maybe, but never broken.”

“We all make mistakes and do things we wish we could take back, but it is what we do after that truly matters…and I like your after.”

“I wasn’t the type of girl who needed to save every broken man she encountered, but Dane was worth saving.”

“If a heart could smile, mine would be beaming right now.”

“Sometimes when life hits you with too much, it makes you stronger and you learn from it. I know where I want to go while some of my friends don’t. Life has brought me maturity. I make my decisions based on who I don’t want to be, rather than whom everyone else wants me to be. I always want to be better. It took me time to see this, but it’s true.” If I didn’t complete love him before, this certainly sealed my fate. He was sexy, kind, and smart, wrapped up in one complete package.”

“I cried because my heart was lying back in his apartment in a million pieces. I cried because I realized that I would never love like this again. Dane had my heart and I would never get it back. I cried because I had happiness in my hand and threw it away. I cried until there were no more tears left to fall down my cheek and slipped back into the numbness that engulfed me before I gave my heart to Dane.”

“Life inspires me. Life is unfair, unkind and unforeseeable. It knocks you down when you least expect it. When I create a sculpture, I can control it. I can create happiness even when I can’t feel it. It’s a way to create what life isn’t giving me.”

And those aren’t even all my favorites…I swear I have close to 100 highlights on my kindle…I couldn’t help myself!

So I guess you could say I kinda sorted maybe liked this book….in the sense that I am in love with every aspect and cannot wait until the 2nd book comes out. Like it needs to happen tomorrow…ok maybe I could wait till the end of the week, but that’s SERIOUSLY asking a lot. GAH! Do. Not. Hesitate. To. Read. This. Book. That is all :-)

This book was exactly what I needed. I knew I would only be able to read a chapter or two a day because I was moving house. So I needed a book that I could read in little pieces and it not be a problem. This book was perfect!
There's such a warm and beautiful love story within these pages. It's sweet and light and fun. Reminding us all of a time when a certain guy was our entire world. A world where your parent's word is final and you wouldn't dare question their wishes, no matter how much they hurt you.

Alex, for me, was such an amazing heroine. I totally sympathised with her, every step of the way. It was sad seeing her living a life trying to please everyone around her. I have been told that a few times in my life and no matter how much I want to change it, when the time comes, I totally crumble.
Even when I knew she was making the wrong decision (which always annoys the crap out of me in books), I knew that Alex was doing what she thought was best. I knew she was trying to protect Dane from the wrath of her self-centred, self-righteous, disgusting parents. So although it made me cry like a baby, I understood her reasons.
I loved how much she adored Dane, and appreciated all important things he taught her. They were truly wonderful together.

Dane was just... I don't even know how to describe him. He's just incredible. One of the loveliest hero's ever!

It was just a really sweet, inspiring book and I loved every page of it. I look forward to reading more by this author.

It went a little something like this:

Good girl meets bad guy.
Insta Lust
Good girl Alexandria/Alex from rich family but doesn’t fit in
Bad Boy Dane covered in tattoos and from the bad side of the tracks
Alex wants Dane
Dane wants Alex
They hook up
Explosive sex
Dane is 100% utterly amazing, book boyfriend material and in deep with Alex
Alex is a silly bitch who you want to hate for breaking Danes heart
Dane breaks your heart cos you love him too much and it hurts to feel him hurt.
Alex gets her shit sorted
HEA

Now I know that sounds like your reading the same storyline that all other College Contemporary Romance’s are written with, and I guess you are in a way but I really liked Lisa De Jong’s swing to it. It felt different.
I fell for Dane and Alex. Dane I fell for HARD.

He literally seemed perfect and then BANG we get his “issues.” but goddamn you still LOVE him!

I was more than happy with the ending of this book but see that there is a second book coming in Summer 2013. So will def give that a go when it’s out.

This one was just okay for me. It really didn't bring anything new or different to the table.

The story never really grabbed me and I had a hard time sticking with it and finishing it--I think I ended up reading three different books in between the start and finish of this one.

I found the dialogue to rather cheesy and the story to be filled with one cliche after another. It was also very predictible. I knew how it was all going to go down from the very beginning.

Alex has always let her parents dictate her life....making all of the choices for her--from her car, to her studies, to her friends, to her boyfriends. Alex is miserable but refuses to stand up to her parents.

Then she meets "bad-boy" Dane--though he really wasn't all that bad--and finally sees glimpses of true happiness.

Alex's parents force her to make a decision between them and Dane and of course she she picks her parents and loses Dane...not once but twice. Eventually, she realizes the mistakes she's made and decides to live for herself....but will it be too late? Has she lost Dane forever??

Still on the fence as to whether I will read the continuation of Dane and Alex's story in Glass Hearts!

Fantastic debut by Lisa De Jong. Can't wait for her release of "Glass Hearts," the second installment in June. Although readers will find a number of similarities to other stories on the market, the characters and wonderful writing style here gives "Plastic Hearts" a cut above some of the others I've read recently.

4 1/2 stars!!! Posted at www.Addicted2Heroine.com

Plastic Hearts was not what I was expecting when I began reading this book. It is a heart wrenching story of self discovery and self acceptance that went much deeper than I anticipated. This story was awesome - from the characters to the topics covered to the relationships examined.

Every now and then, someone would tell me they wished they had my life. I may have a nice house, expensive clothes and a generous monthly allowance, but my life was nothing to envy.

This story is about a girl with a plastic heart - Alex. She is from a wealthy family that has many high expectations placed on her shoulders. This is not a case of a loving family wanting the very best for their beloved daughter. Alex is expected to dress, eat and act a specific way, and she is expected to socialize with only those deemed acceptable by her country club mother. This includes whom she dates. Alex has been groomed to be a physician and is attending NYU as a pre-med major. It's no surprise that Alex hates her pre-med classes, but she lacks the strength and resolve to disobey her parents.

The story open up with Alex dating Ryan, a boy she grew up with who is on her mother's approved list of young men. There is absolutely no spark between these two, and Alex breaks the relationship off, much to her mother's chagrin. Around the same time, Alex meets a smoking hot, motorcycle riding, tattooed art major. Dane Wright is everything that Alex should stay away from according to her mother. Not only is he not from the proper social circle, but he has tattoos, is studying the wrong major and has a dark past of his own.

This man standing in front of me right now could break me into a million pieces, but if I didn't let him in I'd never feel that deep down in my stomach kind of love; I'd forever be unbreakable.

Dane is 100 % swoon worthy. Although he previously had a love 'em and leave 'em attitude, he is completely wrapped up in Alex. Dane has never had a girlfriend, and once you discover his past, you'll understand why. It's complicated with this man. He spends most of this book proving to Alex that he is worthy of her affections. He teaches Alex how to feel and how to love. He provides the support that she is lacking in her life.

He was everything I didn't think I could have and somehow, he'd become everything I needed. There was a part of me that knew I would never recover if this fell apart, but what I felt now was worth it.

However, there are stormy clouds on the horizon. When Alex meets Dane's mom and brother, she is not prepared for their family dynamics. We briefly meet Nolan, Dane's younger brother who has some very serious issues. I am so very intrigued by Nolan. He's definitely not a feel-good character, but I'm itching to discover his past and his redemption. We also meet Dane's mom, who is everything that Alex's mother is not, and not necessarily in a good way. There is such a clear definition drawn between Dane's and Alex's families. You can see the drastic differences between Dane's and Alex's upbringing, but also see that these two are perfect for one another. This is all a credit to De Jong's intense character and plot development.

Alex has to learn to accept herself and her situation if she ever wants to have a real chance with Dane. I enjoyed Alex's growth and decision making in this book. She didn't always make the right choices, but she learned from the wrong ones. Alex has a difficult road to travel, but she figures it out and I hope that she is better for it on the other side.

Change used to scare the hell out of me, but now I welcomed it because the more things that changed, the better I felt about myself.

I honestly couldn't even stomach Alex's family. The only person that is somewhat decent is Alex's sister, Gwen, who is the golden child. She is living her life the way her parents want her to, and marrying the man of her mother's dreams. Gwen, though, understands Alex and gives her good sisterly advice. Alex's mom and dad are disgusting in their treatment of Alex with no redeeming qualities.

I love the "plastic hearts" metaphor that is examined in this novel. It was a theme throughout and I loved how Lisa De Jong wove it in and out of the various plot lines. Alex was raised to have a plastic heart - to feel no strong emotions, no matter the situation. After all, she had appearances to keep up. Some might argue that Alex is in college and should live her own life and turn her back on her parents, but this is a difficult situation. Not only will they cut her off financially, but in my experience, no matter how terrible parents are, a child will always try to please them, even if that child isn't aware of that behavior. Alex wages an internal battle with herself in this book between her dreams and desires and her parents' control of her life.

I learned a long time ago that most of my family and friends had plastic hearts. Plastic hearts are made so they cannot be broken. Cracked, maybe, but never broken. They made decisions based on outward appearances and ignored all emotion.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the continuation of Alex's and Dane's story in Glass Hearts, due sometime this summer. De Jong did a fantastic job of story telling that sucked me into the lives of her characters. With the explosion of New Adult books that feature the "other character's" point of view, Dane's PoV would be pure gold if you enjoy that sort of thing (I do!). If you are a fan of the New Adult genre, then this is one that you cannot miss.

My plastic heart became glass the day I met Dane Wright.

When the book opens we meet Alexandra Riley who is in her first year at NYU with her sights to the future on pediatric medicine. From the beginning the picture of Alexandra and her family is painted as bold as a Do Not Enter sign! She was VERY sheltered and comes from a family that is built on wealth. Everything her parents and sister have lived for is wealth and status. That was Alexandra too. When she goes away she leaves her boyfriend behind and gets settled into college life. I think he was her best friend, but they were both expected to become a couple. While she is going through the start of her transformation she takes one art class. She has always liked painting and allows herself this one enjoyable class. In the class she meets Dane Wright. He is the one that turns her planets upside down and causes her extreme cosmic blowout!

This is the first part in the Plastic Hearts Series (secretly hoping to have 3 books or more) The story follows Alexandra, who quickly changes her life path and transforms to Alex. This is the first novel for Lisa. I found that reader, blogger and reviewer makes a wonderful author. Aside from the fact that I read a lot of what this author does, we agree on a lot of it too. The book had a really good balance of angst and drama. The best part for me was the actual situations presented in the book. They were totally believable. I have read a lot of books that were good but the situations presented were just too "out there". The love of art shared between Alex and Dane was believable. The way Alexandra grew up and the raw emotional fear she felt about explaining Dane.

The story-lines, the characters, and especially the background were spot on. As a New Yorker I love to read about anything East Coast that is accurate. New York and Connecticut have very many exclusive areas where The Riley type of family dwells. So when Alex is thinking about what her future holds and what her sister Gwenn's future will be, it is the most real part. I know that Gwenn's fiance and her upcoming wedding are getting Alex to see the light. She wonders but never asks Gwenn if she is in love. That is basically all I will say about the plot. I reads tons of reviews and I really don't like when there is an outline, so I am not doing that. I will just say that these families exist! Think of Donald Trump for a minute. Maybe Donald Junior, for instance, comes home with a girl who does ear piercings at a kiosk by Bryant Park. How do you think Mr Trump would react? Bingo!! This is my girl and she works at a pizza place and is putting herself through school to become an artist. Dad can we take her to Regis Philbin's house for lunch? I could go on but I think I made my point.

Grab it up or enter to win a copy. Rave reviews and dripping with anticipation for book 2. On another note the editing was great. I never ever pick if I see an indie author who has a typos, this was perfect.

On another note, the cover girl is so Alexandra Riley to me, but the guy needs more edge. Recommended for mature readers due to sexual content and language. (this was so pg to me I didn't need a warning, but I do love when I see those, I hurry and read them faster

Let me start by saying that I LOVED the idea of this story. Rich girl, a family with high expectations, falling for someone her parents would never approve of? Awesome. I definitely jumped at the opportunity when Lisa asked us to review for her. I might have stolen this one for myself {grin}.

“Happiness is more important than money.”

I don’t even know where to start. I’ll first say that I read this in one afternoon/evening. I haven’t stayed up late to finish a book in weeks. I even blew off crossfit in the morning to stay up late and finish… and if you know me {shut up Abby and Rhiannon}, I’m slightly addicted so, it’s kind of a big deal

“I learned a long time ago that most of my family and friends had plastic hearts. Plastic hearts are made so they cannot be broken. Cracked maybe, but never broken.”

Plastic Hearts by Lisa De Jong starts with Alexandra (Alex) Riley living the life that she is expected to. A boyfriend that she loves but doesn’t love. A college major that she hates, and a family that doesn’t know the real her.

“Life inspires me. Life is unfair, unkind and unforeseeable. It knocks you down when you least expect it.”

Enter one chance encounter at a club with Dane Wright and Alex’s life changes forever. What unfolds is a heart warming, coming of age love story between two very opposite people that find that they aren’t all that different.

“We all make mistakes and do things we wish we could take back, but it is what we do after that truly matters…and I like your after.”

I won’t lie. I loved Dane. And even though sometimes him and Alex were a little over the top with their I love you’s, but the chemistry between these two was great. I loved Dane’s cocky banter, almost more than the sweet side of him. I didn’t think I would relate to Alex, but honestly, maybe we don’t have her parents to that extent, but everyone can relate to the pressures of parents. Plus the addition of Tyler and Jade were just enough to keep the story moving and add to the plot.

“Alex, love can change your life. Don’t run away from it.”

I’m very excited to see what else comes from Lisa De Jong after this steller first book. Not to mention I can’t wait to read the follow up, Glass Hearts this summer!

Be sure to pick this book up because you definitely won’t be disappointed.

“Redemption isn’t something that comes fast and easy. You have to put all your effort and heart into it to make it work.”

Plastic hearts are made so they cannot be broken. Cracked maybe, but never broken.

I went back and forth between 3.5 and 4 stars, but ultimately Alex pissed me off too much, especially towards the last 30%.

Alex is rich and her parents are all about appearances. Dane is from the wrong side of the tracks. He has tattoos, is an art major and works as a bartender. Alex and Dane have a class together and despite Alex’s parent’s wishes, she forms a relationship with Dane.

To sum up Plastic Hearts… it’s 100% about Alex freaking out dating a boy her parents won’t like.

Summary…

Alex freaks out … trying to find herself

Alex meets Dane

Dane is sweet

Dane is sweet

Alex freaks out

Dane is sweet

Alex REALLY freaks out

Dane is sweet

… that’s it.

I didn’t like Plastic Hearts, but didn’t dislike it. Overall, the story was okay. There were a few quotable moments and I enjoyed Dane. Dane is adorable, very swoon worthy and yes there were “Travis Maddox” moments, but Alex kind of messes it up for me.

It was the glasses

What?

They are sexy as hell and if you wear them to the library or anywhere else again, I’m going to…

Going to what?

I’m going to f&ck you and I won’t care who’s watching

I liked the dramatic moments, but I wished they weren’t so obvious and annoying. The first 70% was decent. Yes, there were some hiccups along the way and I loved the tension and banter between Alex and Dane, BUT the last 30% was just the downfall.

If I could just slap Alex and say oh get the F over it! So your parents are strict, Dane is so freaking sweet, are you crazy?!

Falling for him could easily turn my heart to glass and shatter it into a million little pieces, but I couldn’t stop myself.

I didn’t think parents not approving your boyfriend was enough of a reason for all the drama. Also, I found some of the moments awkward and little too forced, Plastic Hearts tried too hard to be like Beautiful Disaster or it reminded me a lot like Beautiful Disaster (which could be good or bad on how you look at it)

A notable first try and I’m not giving up on Lisa De Jong. I just hope the kinks are worked out in the next book. I will more than likely read it.

Plastic hearts is a story of love, loss, need, want, and hurt.

So many times I was so frustrated with Alex, she made me.......

I wanted to reach through tis iPad and choke her or at least smack some sense into her. I know she wanted to please others but that will never happen. You will never please everyone. Her parents were pathetic and they truly had plastic hearts. I am not even sure why those two had children. I guess to make them look good, who knows but all they did was make me feel, rage and pure utter.......

I did feel sorry for Ryan at first but I am glad that Alex followed her heart on that one, I think they are better as friends. Dane, well I love him. He had a very hard life but chose to not let the past dictate his future. I mean he had me.....

My heart broke over and over for him when he talked of his past and he really loved Alex something fierce but I knew girl was gonna screw it up. She was so weak, I wanted to scream and tell her to grow a back bone already.

Dane was her knight in a leather coat. A bad boy with a past, but with the biggest heart. He stood by her and wanted her to stand up for herself and the times she did, to see how it affected him, how proud he was of her made my heart do funny things.

By the end if the book I was......

I mean I was worried for quite some time but by the end I was satisfied.

To the author.....

This book let me think in the thing we do to stay in safety side and far away from the unknown and the thought of that made me angry

But back to the book all i felt was angry and disappointed and frustrated by ALEX

And more i read about her talking or thinking on and on about her controlling parents and her life i felt sick and angry with her and i just wont to kick her , smack her hard and smash her head in the wall

THERE WAS ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE ALXE IN MY HEAD ( SHE THE BIGGEST COWARD IN THE PLANET )

poor DANE

I din't why he reminded me of TRAVIS FROM (Beautiful Disaster)

In the end it was a good book but not great because i felt some similarity with other books i read before

This book is the first novel for Lisa De Jong and she has stolen my heart! I instantly fell in love with Dane and boy oh boy, he is super swoon worthy. Alex can't help but fall in love with him as well. She's constantly battling with her path in life. Does she choose the path her parents have set for her, or does she follow her heart into places she never even imagined?

This story flowed effortlessly and I could not put it down. It was one of those books you read just dying to find out what happens next, yet curse yourself for reading too quickly. I simply did not want it to end. I laughed, swooned, and cried with the characters. Lisa is a master writer of angst and Plastic Hearts was bursting at the seams with gut wrenching plot lines. This was a story that twisted my gut and heart into a mangled mess, but it "hurt so good."

Lisa, who was once a book reviewer and blogger, has found her new calling as an up and coming Indie Author. The story was fabulously edited, beautifully scripted, and smoking hot. Dane and Alex will win you over and you'll be panting for more. Pick this one up and don't wait another second. It will easily be added to the top of your "5 Star Reads." Outstanding job, Lisa, and we will all be anxiously awaiting your next book!

this book came to me VERY highly recommended from a friend. when i first started reading it, i was kind of thinking, "ok, same ol', same ol'. sheltered girl meets the BMOC who she really shouldn't be involved with," but this story evolved into so much more than that.
alex is one of those spoiled, little rich girls that i want to smack. repeatedly. thank goodness for her roommate and confidante, jade.
dane is one of those guys who is cocky on the outside because he needs to protect what's on the inside. the rough exterior is just waiting for that one special person.
the chemistry that alex and dane have is just.....one of a kind.
this was a rather light, yet steamy read :)

I freaking loved this book, don't know why I waited so long to read it. I probably would've been crying if I wouldn't have been at work reading this book. I absolutely felt so bad for Dane when Alex dumped him because I truly felt they were perfect together and he absolutely adored/loved her. I was happy that Alex finally stood up to her parents and starting making decisions that were best for her. I guess you could say that Alex ultimately got her HEA but I'm sure Dane is going to have some problems with trusting her completely but I'll find that out in the next book.
