K.R. Meera is an Indian author, who writes in Malayalam. She won Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 2009 for her short-story, Ave Maria.She has also been noted as a screenplay writer of 4 serials.
Meera was born in Sasthamkotta, Kollam district in Kerala.She worked as a journalist in Malayala Manorama, later resigned to concentrate more on writing. She is also a well-known column-writer in Malayalam

This is the story of a blind man's search for his wife. On the face of it. But really, The Unseeing Idol of Light is full of inadvertent philosophies, of always another point of view, one that is completely different from the prevalent one, of the depth of feelings that reside within everyone at so many levels: between friends, between lovers, between parents, strangers, chance encounters, of how profound and abiding passion can be when accompanied by love that is at once embracive, encompassing and forgiving. Ministhy's translation from the original in Malayalam appears seamless, always keeping the tenor of the deep emotions alive and real. The friendship between Shyam and Prakash is devoid of cliches; Prakash's love for Deepti is unwavering even after 10 years of her disappearance; his passion for Rajani is powerful as is her desire for his love. Incredibly beautiful storytelling.

A tale of love, betrayal and lost chances. Told beautifully in a way that only the author can. Characters who are self destructive and complicated, this is one of those books that leaves you with a heavy heart.

This book gave me an ick, that too in the first chapter. And yet I continued reading because I wanted to give it a chance.
First things first, for people who are here before they start reading the book. I must warn you. There are many unsettling, weird and illogical philosophies involved and you wouldn't wanna be attacked by them. The blurb or the cover should have had TWs written in them, but they aren't there. Which is why it's deceiving. I picked this book thinking of it being an amazing thriller. But what I got was a heap of crap. That's about how I can summarise the book to you.

After reading the blurb, I was intrigued. As to why and how men were losing their eye sights upon losing their wives. But I never got to understand that part of the story as half of my time, I was hating the Main male Character which is Prakash. It's not that other characters are good, they all are flawed to the point that you start despising them. But Prakash, he was a sadist. As much as I want to deny it, deep down I know there are people like him out there who'd force themselves on to a mentally ill woman. Once, twice and idk how many times. What I can't grasp is that, why did the Author need to write about such characters? And even if she decided to write about them, why don't we see any development, any progress, anything that might redeem them. As I flipped the pages, the inner disgust and loathing in me for these characters grew. And the unending lecture of philosophy. I didn't think I was signing up for something like this.
Then again, one would think. Why did I continue reading it? Because I had hope, that maybe things would get better. Maybe he'll be able to find his wife and things will get better. But it only went darker and darker.
The only characters I felt pity for were Shyam and Rajani. Both of these characters were flawed. But they weren't the ones to cause harm to anyone in particular, rather they were the support system of Prakash who kept doing nonsensical, illegal things in the name of finding his wife.
Also, What's going on with? Why are the social issues not addressed properly? Women's are being downgraded, they are being raped by several men's at a time and yet no one cares. Everyone is living their life just as they were before.
You can use a book to promote feminist, feminine power and much more stuff related to our society that would eventually open the eyes of young minds finding a hiding place in these books. And yet this author decided to promote these societal beliefs that we women have been trying to fight against for so long.
No one, literally, no one can change my mind. If people come to me and say that the book was in fact not promoting these issues, I'd laugh at their stupidity. Because even if it's not meant to promote these issues, this book didn't play its part in causing a change in society.
Anyways, enough about that. I'll just have to read something better.

മീരയുടെ എഴുത്തുകൾ എന്നും അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടേ ഉള്ളൂ. അക്കൂട്ടത്തിൽ വ്യത്യസ്തമായൊരു പുസ്തകം. എഴുത്തിന്റെ ശൈലി മീരയുടെ മറ്റ് പുസ്തകങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. ഒന്നിന് രണ്ടാവർത്തി വായിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു പല കാര്യങ്ങളുടെയും സത്ത കിട്ടുവാൻ. പ്രണയവും നീതിയും അന്ധതയും കൂടിക്കലർന്ന അന്തരീക്ഷം. നമ്മളിലെ അകക്കണ്ണ് തുറക്കാനായൊരു വാതിൽ മീര പ്രകാശനിലൂടെ നമുക്ക് മുൻപിൽ തുറന്നു വയ്ക്കുന്നു. ഐശ്വര്യത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകമായി ദീപ്തിയും അതിജീവനത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകമായി രജനിയും പ്രകാശനിലും നമ്മളിലും നിറയുന്നു.

കാത്തിരിപ്പിന്റെ, കണ്ടെത്തലിന്റെ കഥ കൂടിയാണിത്.

കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോൾ അവരിൽ ഒരുപാട് മാറ്റങ്ങൾ പിന്നീട് സംഭവിക്കുന്നതായി കാണാൻ സാധിക്കും. ശ്യാം, രജനി ,ദീപ്തി എന്ന ജ്യോതി , പ്രകാശൻ. ചന്ദ്രമോഹൻ. ഉൾകണ്ണു തുറന്നാൽ യാഥാർത്ഥ്യങ്ങളെ ഉൾക്കൊണ്ട് കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ മനസ്സിലാക്കി അവരിലൂടെ കടന്ന് പോകാൻ കഴിയും. ചില പൊരുത്തകേടുകളെപ്പോലും മനസ്സാൽ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാൻ സാധിച്ചെന്നുംവരാം...☘✨

It hurts for me to actually give a book 2 and below ratings, but I have to, coz that's how frustrated and annoyed I was after finishing this one. I find quite a few things disturbing about this story.

For starters, this book requires a whole lot of trigger warnings and I found nothing anywhere on the internet mentioning anything about this except that it was a story of love, pain and loss. So here's a list for anyone looking for it:
TW: Deaths, Rape, Gangrape, Suicide, Suicide attempts, Physical abuse.

Next, I found the protagonist Prakashan to be a creep honestly. Of course such people do exist in real life, but portraying him as this ever smiling philosophical gentleman ( inspite of basically raping a woman on her hospital bed ) is not cool. The said woman actually has a traumatic childhood and is on the hospital bed with a broken neck after a suicide attempt. ( Why did she attempt it? Because she stumbled upon this said Prakashan masturbating and she has traumatic experiences with naked masculinity from childhood). The strange part, she falls in love with him instantly. Yup, makes no sense to me.
Another incident that i cannot just comprehend is when this Prakashans wife goes missing when she's 8 months pregnant. She travels with her father on a train to her workplace, and in the middle of the night wakes up panicked and picks up her luggage and blanket and jumps off the train at the wrong station thinking her station has arrived. It leads to a series of events where she gets lost and gets raped by 18 men. What I dont understand here is , her father is travelling with her for the sole purpose of safely getting her to her workplace and she just jumps off the train at a station? Like won't you even try and wake up your father to tell him that the stations here or something??? Do you just abandon him on the train, like I don't get it.
The author has penned quite a few beautiful metaphors, which is one thing i liked about this book on the whole . Though even that at some point gets frustrating because some phrases have been repeated throughout the book to the point it started becoming annoying. Phrases like "Kadavavaline pole thala keezhayi thoongi" and "avalde shabdam autumonthayil viral thodunna pole ayirunnu" "mathilil chirichu irikkunna maricha ammayude chithram" "kinattile thavalayude shabdam" and so on, have been repeated so manyyyyy times throughout.

The only reason I would give even a 2 is because I did not DNF this book and I usually do that to a book the moment I feel I can't continue, so that says something I guess.

A form of visceral grief engulfed me while I was reading Unseeing Light of An Idol. Grieved through the read.
I think I had a catharthic release after a week long of pent-up anger. You know how some books happen at your most crucial phase. A purgatory drug at the end of the read. Now, my heart feels a lot lighter.

A true masterpiece.

K.R. Meera is a storytelling prowess.
I have read 4 out of 5 translated novels of hers. I wish she continues writing many more stories. I'd like to go to my grave one day knowing I've acquainted with many characters in her stories.

I can't tell how incredible Ministhy S's translation is. She's a true genius, a word smith and her faculty for the language is pure brilliance. It's a gift to be able to translate and preserve the ethos of the story unsullied at the same time. Such an immersive experience.

I hope I meet K.R.Meera and Ministhy S in person one fine day just to know first-hand the brilliance of their minds. Geniuses.

The strongest objective in the book is its translation. This isn’t the first time for me reading a translated novel but Ministhy impressed me with her work of translating it without dissipating the essence of the original one.

Before getting on to the review, I want to ask “What will you do if we lose your vision unexpectedly?”

“The Unseeing Idol of Light” by K.R.Meera is a story of Prakash (Jayaprakash) and the events taking place around him. His life led smoothly with his wife Deepti by expecting a baby in their ecstatic world. On one unfortunate night, Deepti goes missing amidst her travel between Cochin to Calicut without a trace. Overcome with grief, Prakash becomes visually impaired due to depression. Thenceforth, Prakash begins his quest in search for his wife and child in homeless shelters, morgues and hospitals along with his best friend Shyam.

“My son, returning is never easy for the women who depart.”

Concurrently, Shyam and Deepti’s father take home a woman who is skepticized to be Deepti. At the same time, Rajani, an insane woman, falls in love with Prakash exclusively. Will the sightless Prakash be able to identify and bring Deepti back home? Where did Deepti go? By the way, who is the woman disguised to be Deepti? Will Prakash accept Rajani as his better-half?

The exciting intention of this book is that though the story is being written about the happenings in Prakash’s life, it truly depicts the emotions of every woman that are left unsaid and unnoticed. It triggers the reader emotions about love, lust, longing, grief, friendship, separation, hope and expectations. This book is an intense read and would love to recommend to every reader who yearns for a classic suspense thriller.

This is my first book by k.r.meera and I am preparing to read more by this author .
Next I am starting " The poison of love " and " Hangwomen " .
The story is so emotional and having intense in its sadness .
The plot and story so classic .
The author writings so powerful and wonderful .
I loved a lot .
The story has everything love , hate , dreams, sacrifiace, hope and faith .

The language is so clear and perfect to understand the plot .
Not so many characters... the characters made justice to their respected roles in story.
This is emotional read which shows up love and light of life .
My fav character is " shyam " .

After her missing prakash never stopped searching for her with help his friend shyam.
After ten years searching one day an unknown woman who is same as like as deepthi... Here the story starts gripping readers .

കഥ പറയുന്ന രീതിയെ പറ്റിയും എഴുത്തിനെ കുറിച്ചും കുറ്റം പറയാൻ ഒന്നുമില്ല. ആശുപത്രിയിൽ പരിക്ക് പറ്റി അനങ്ങാനാകാതെ കിടക്കുന്ന തന്നെ പീഡിപ്പിച്ച പ്രകാശനോട് രജനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്ന പ്രണയം യുക്തിക്ക് നിരക്കാത്ത കാര്യമാണെങ്കിലും പ്രകാശനെയും ദീപ്തിയേയും രജനിയേയും ശാമിനേയും മറ്റു കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ എല്ലാവരേയും മനസ്സിലാക്കി നമുക്ക് കൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കാനാകും.

It is a different kind of love story with elements of pain and loss. The novel has got an intriguing and never before seen theme. The story picks up a bit slow. The second half is eventful and that makes the whole book worth a read. What I did not like is ,certain pivotal elements in the story sounded chauvinistic and too much melodramatic.
This is my first of K R Meera, the award winning and accomplished writer. This book has given me enough inspiration to read Hangwoman.

The author has a very distinctive writing style and this book was no different. There was symbolism, which played a central role. And then there were characters, puppets to circumstances, affected by grief in their own peculiar way. The plot flows in its own direction, sometimes bumpy, sometimes smooth.
This story lacks a certain intensity but is equally raw and heartbreaking as all of the author's stories.

For almost the entire novel, I despised the main character Prakash for been selfish. But by the end when things start unravelling, I became sympathetic towards him; hoping things turn around for him.
It’s only by the end you realise how brilliant this unassuming novel is.
Ultimately it’s about highlighting the suffering of each woman in the book.

A poignant tale of loss and love, this book has a lot of depth to it. Metaphors have been sprinkled throughout the book and understanding them is what gives you the real picture about what the author intends to say. The characters are all complex and the way K.R.Meera has managed to give the readers a closure by tying all lose ends is really commendable.
