A good survey of underground or weird Japanese cinema from the 70's and onward. It's a good book to dip your big toe into the hot bath of Japanese film. Also finally there are DVD's coming out of this period, so it's a good chance one can now locate these films on DVD. But it has to be a really cool DVD store!
If you are looking for what is essentially an encyclopedia on the deepest, darkest, grossest depths of pinku eiga, Hunter's volume is perfect. If you're looking for any kind of analysis of the themes of horror pinku, you're not going to get much. Hunter occasionally has a REALLY interesting tidbit, something he could write a page or two about, and he just kinda doesn't and opts for a single sentence instead. Opted more for a high three but considering Hunter is one of the first non-Japanese academics to study this area I do find the text pretty groundbreaking.
A quiet simply magnificent resource for the Japanese avant-garde and underground film scene. Seen my fair share of the oddities detailed within but have even more to check out and will do so as soon as possible.
