These books are guilty pleasures. J.D. Robb's series of mysteries/police procedurals set in the near future (about 150 years from now) and revolving around the professional and personal life of NYPSD homicide detective, Lt. Eve Dallas, has kept Connie and I entertained for several years now. Connie has a permanent order set up on Amazon to get the newest release as soon as it is available.

Why guilty pleasure? Well, they're pretty formulaic and J.D. Robb is actually a nom de plume (used in this series only) for the world's most successful romance writer, Nora Roberts. But you know, the gal can really write. We fell in love with the characters, which include the tough but vulnerable Eve, her devoted husband (and "retired" criminal) Roarke, her partner Delia Peabody and a host of other colleagues and friends. Also, they're pretty steamy -- not gross but sex is definitely a part of the marriage of the two protagonists. Frankly, it's nice to see a married couple portrayed as in love with each other and passionate -- it's from the best tradition of the Biblical "Song of Solomon." And the mystery/procedural part is almost always clever. And the characters are witty.

This particular book is a collection of short stories, two of which I'd already read. In one, Eve has to tackle a real-life "vampire." In another, the perps are a group of Satanists. And in the final story, a body disappears without explanation. Good fun!

Two Okay One Really Good

3.5 Stars

Eternity In Death was a 3.5 for me.
Started off really good but needed to be darker.
Felt rushed.

Ritual In Death was a 4.25 for me and the best in this bundle. Very intense. Dark, bloody & a bit creepy.

Missing In Death was a 3.5 stars for me. A bit sluggish in areas but decent read.

This is three of the short stories in the Eve Dallas alterverse. One is about vampires, one about satanic rituals, and the third about a mysterious disappearance on a NY ferry. Fun to read.

This was a really interesting read. I was burning through the pages like wildfire. I enjoyed the characters (of course), their personalities, the plots, the tricks and woo woo aspects, the suspense and the endings. I liked how these novellas were grouped in one book so I was able to put it with the rest of the series that I have. This one definitely had the brain going...What? Another great book (or novellas) that keeps me going back over and over. Enjoy!

Personally, I really like when they re-package these In Death novellas together, as I don't usually care to read the other authors' stories that are originally published with these. If I weren't just a bit OCD, I'd probably skip these novellas altogether, because I find them generally unsatisfying. But, they are part of the whole of the series and include more interaction of a cast of well-loved characters, so I can't bring myself to pass them by. The stories are too short to really develop a good crime story, and there are elements JD/NR seems to like including in these shorter stories that I just don't get into. I avoid most things that involve paranormal. I like good old human interaction.

That said, these novellas give the author a chance to dip into some odd ideas that possibly wouldn't support a longer story.

In this collection, we have Eternity in Death, Ritual in Death, and Missing in Death.

Eternity in Death includes the currently popular vampire theme. There are some interesting twists, and Eve's interactions with Peabody and Roarke (who are more open to the mystical) are always fun when they deal with these things.

I enjoyed Ritual in Death more than the average In Death novella. One can't look too deeply into the why and the details of the death, as they don't really hold up all that well. But, it's interesting to see how Eve identifies the weak link and pulls it all together. As I said, the story doesn't hold up to much study, but for me, it was better than average for the novellas.

Missing in Death started out with a great premise. I love the conundrum of it. Unfortunately, the mystery evaporates quickly when a 'magic weapon' is uncovered. There is some satisfaction in the subplot involving Homeland Security, with other back stories being brought full circle. And there is a challenge to Eve's very strict (read, black and white) moral code, to which she responds appropriately. Still, I ended up feeling like the magic weapon was a cheat!

So, three stars for the packaging of the stories (so I don't pay money for stories I will never read) and for some clever story ideas. I can't see that I would rate a collection of these novellas higher than 3 stars, as they will simply never be as satisfying as the regular length books.

3.5 stars-- Overall, this is a pretty strong little collection, and I think it or the first collection of In Death novellas (Three in Death) could be a good way to dip your toes into the kind of mystery stories that this series trades in

After finishing these three novellas it was time to sit back and bask in the feeling of once again having criminals come out the losers at matching wits with Eve Dallas and Roarke. Not only did I blast through the book today but am once again reminded why I love to read this gritty futuristic murder mystery series because every story keeps me guessing until the very end and makes me appreciate the authors ability to engage her readers from start to finish.

It took some time but I have finally made my way through books 20-29 of the series including the 3 novellas collected in Time of Death.

I'll add the individual rating for each novella as well as the start and finish dates later but for now, I just want to say that while I don't normally like or enjoy novellas much, the ones in this collection were more enjoyable than I was expecting.
Eternity in Death had an interesting take on immortality and a certain Prince of Darkness.
Ritual in Death was even darker, bloodier and more brutal. Very unsettling!
Missing in Death was quite intriguing and posed a moral dilemma for our amazing LT, trying to navigate gray areas to the best of her ability.

Love this series and can't wait to read more! :)

Three amazing short stories in one book!

I think this is the first time I’ve ever read short stories, in a trilogy, byJD Robb. She definitely doesn’t disappoint! There’s always an undercurrent of supernatural, but these definitely had it in spades! I know the topic of murder is hard, but she Spins a Tale like almost no other author, I know.

I normally do not read the short novellas in series, because often times they include characters you might not see again. I'm so glad I picked this up. I had been missing Eve and Peabody and loved these three ahort stories. Two of them included the bizarre elements and the other had spys and assassins, and the side bonus of including an interaction with Somerset. I love these characters and the world of Eve Dallas, it was a great quick read

3 Novellas in one book. Two have a "supernatural" twist to them; and one is pretty straight forward. Clearly not as involved as the In Death books tend to be, since these are much shorter; but still fun reads, and enough of a taste of the well-loved characters to make them satisfying.

Eternity in Death: 4-Stars
A short story about a party girl, Tiara, who wanted eternal beauty and life and thought she had found a way to achieve it. When she is found dead in her apartment is appears that she was done in by a vampire attack. Eve is having nothing to do with that and sets about finding the nutjob who killed her and drained her blood. The path leads to a deep underground club, Bloodbath, and a man who presents himself as the Dark Prince. A Dark Prince who takes a fancy to Eve.

This short story was a great way to pass a spring afternoon. Eve has to deal with the feelings about her father that Dorian brings to the surface. The same evil malevolence Eve knew her father had, is present in Dorian. Roarke, bless him, has to bide his time and let Eve play this one out.

Ritual in Death: 5-Stars
Part of the anthology Time of Death. Novella about the murder of a young woman as part of a satanic ritual. Eve stands for the victim - Always. When a party she and Roarke are attending is interrupted by a nude man covered in blood holding a knife, Eve knows her night was going to be a long one. Eve and Roarke track down where the man came from and were confronted by what appears to be the site of a satanic ritual with the dead body of a woman at the center. Since this murder has taken place in his hotel there is no way Eve can keep Roarke out of the investigation and his assistance helps to break the case wide open.

Missing in Death: 5-Stars
While on a trip on the Staten Island ferry a mom comes across a gruesome scene and disappears only to show up an hour later minus her memory. Eve and Peabody are called when copious amounts of blood are found in a women's restroom. This case was baffling from the beginning as Eve was unable to find neither the victim or the doer and the witness had no memory of what happened.

The investigation leads Eve to reconsider her moral stand on right vs. wrong; good vs. evil and to make a moral judgement call.

I find for some reasons with the novellas they have a bit of a paranormal twist to them, not always but two of three stories in this collection did.
They were good, but not the build up like the full length novels, but like real police work some would be solved quickly and others a longer time.
Not sure I liked any one of them more than the other but they put interesting twists in Eve and Roarke's story.

These weren't bad. Kinda liked the first one. Don't remember a lot of the second one, other than it was fine (I read them in chronological order with the novels). The last was fine. Liked the ferry aspect. I will say, the Homeland Security Office plotline in this series is tedious, mainly because it's such a corrupt organization it's whatever the equivalent of a straw man is when it's an organization.

Three stories, three murders, one case cracker. Eve Dallas, a New York Police Lieutenant, is called for the most serious and important cases. Each case has a twist that only Eve can investigate. Many obstacles that Eve faces occur at the worst time and place. A vampire, a witness with amnesia, and a mysterious disappearance. All obstacles in which the people of New York knew Eve can jump over. The How far will Eve go to get what she wants to solve her case? As far as she can go.

Original review in 2012:
2.5 stars

All three victims died by exsanguination, but the first two novellas were bloody awful. Spare me the spooky-creepy vampire and ritual murder stuff.

The third was actually pretty good.

2 stars, 2 stars, 3 stars.

After rereading in 2016:
3 stars

Didn't dislike the first 2 as much, but the third is still the best of the lot.

I've waited so long to write this, I am forgetting what all I wanted to say. I think it was pretty simple though.

This book is a collection of three shorter stories in the In Death series, including; Eternity in Death, Missing in Death, and Ritual in Death. They were released in between the main books from around 2000 or later to 2009.

The first book Eternity in Death was my first full read by this author and i was immediately hooked in by the vampire story. Was not expecting that.

Oh, first i should say, that while these are relatively easy enough to read on their own (nonsequentially), i did read a little of the first book before starting, and i think that was key in getting the idea of the main storyline. But I'll quickly recap. It's basically a crime investing series set in a futuristic time. Eve Dallas is the main PI working for the local police with a couple other regular characters, including her husband, who is often featured to contrast Eve's more logical characterization.

Ok, back to the shorter stories. So i enjoyed Eternity. Vampire. Not much more to say.

Ritual in Death was next. It was about a cult caused murder (a ritualistic murder). I did not like it as much because of the graphic nature of the scene/murder. But it was still your basic criminal investigation, so that dislike was just personal taste (or distaste?)

And finally, Missing in Death. There is a murder, but the body can't be found. How do you solve the murder, find the murder with no body? Well, Eve figures it out, and it was a brilliant way. I enjoyed this one too.

I suppose i should rank each individually, but overall, i would still reach about a 3 (or 3.5 on halfscale). While i enjoyed the stories, they are a bit basic. Formulaic. Which isn't necessarily bad, and maybe it is because they are shorter, but that is my rank today. I could see myself revisiting a couple of these someday, but there are a lot of other JD Robb/Nora Roberts books just in this series alone, so... on to the next one! I think i will go back to the beginning though. 😁👍

Time of Death by J.D. Robb is a novella collection featuring NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas. Unlike the Three in Death collection that was primarily straight forward, the strange and flat-out weird plays a bigger role in this read.

It opens with Eternity in Death. In late April 2060m Tiara Dent bought into his myth of living forever. Now she won’t see 24 as the young beautiful woman is a very dead celebrity. The two puncture wounds on the left side of her throat give some indication to how it happened.

Eve Dallas hates stiletto heels. She hates the dressing up to mingle and socialize party nonsense. But, when you are married to Roarke, a very rich man, you do what you have to do. That means being very dressed up and in attendance at the gathering hosted by Maxia Caryle. It was supposed to be a fun evening. Certainly not a murder scene. But, it is, and now there is a victim, one very bloody suspect, and many other folks that also have to be ruled considered as killers or witnesses. Now the real party can get started.

It is early spring in 2060 and the traditional ferries still sail across the water to the Statue of Liberty. One on those ferries, the Hillary Rodham Clinton, has a very bloody bathroom. No doubt the person that was in that bathroom is dead. Nobody could have survived that massive amount of blood loss. Yet, there is no body. That person did not just get up and leave. It all means that Lieutenant Eve Dallas has a missing victim, a floating crime scene, and more than a few suspects in this one.

The three novellas in the Time of Death collection are all good ones. They push the boundaries of the strange a little bit, but all three end up being logically solved. As always, there are plenty of twists and turns as the reads move quickly to a resolution.

My reading copy came by way of the Libby/OverDrive App and the Dallas Public Library System.

Time Of Death by JD Robb @jdrobbauthor includes:

Eternity In Death, Book 25.5 - Eve & Peabody are called out to investigate the death of a woman who was killed by what appears to be a vampire. Eve, Peabody, McNab & Roarke go to an underground bar that is supposed to be a vampire bar. They get a blood sample from the owner but it doesn't match the victim. Another woman is killed in the same manner & again the DNA doesn't match. Eve asks the lab to run the DNA through dead people & finds a match. Eve goes back to the club by herself, supposedly, to take him down. Eve arrests him.

Ritual In Death - Book 27.5 - While at an event at a hotel Roarke owns, Eve & Roarke are interrupted by a naked man, Jack, covered in blood. They follow a blood trail & find a woman, Ava, who is rapee & murdered in a ritualistic manner. A Pentagon on the floor. Eve & Roarke go to see the head of security & she has the same symptoms as Jack. Roarke goes to see Isis, an ex-lover from a prior life, who is a witch for help. Eve & Peabody continue to investigate. Eve goes to Jack & Ava’s work & figures out who killed Ava. Isis does a ceremony & then is able to pick out the people that murdered Ava. Eve arrests over a dozen people.

Missing in Death Book 29.5 - Eve & Peabody are investigating a missing tourist with a lot of blood in the bathroom aboard a ferry. The tourist is found (Yay!) but isn't injured other than a knock on the head. When scanning all the passengers & staff as they exited the ferry they find out 2 people are missing. They identify who the blood belongs to. Roarke knows of the victim, a hired assassin. She discovers who killed her & it ends up being a friend of Summerset’s. He was a victim of HSO, just like Eve was. She tells him she has to report this to her Commander & will follow his orders. She tells him he has 1-2 hours max before HSO is after him.

Three good novellas

These are a little long to be called short stories (about 100 pages each) so I think novellas is a more accurate name for these.

I do not like talking about the plot of books/stories/whatever because it starts to feel like a book report to me rather than a review of what I thought of a story and because there are plenty of places to go where you can read a synopsis of the plot of pretty much everything. So as usual I will not talk about the plots specifically.

Three good compelling stories. Just what we have learned to expect from the “in Death” series by JD Robb (aka Nora Roberts). They are very fast paced (read the last half of the book in one sitting) which is noteworthy because this series is generally paced a bit slower.

We don’t see the ancillary characters in these novellas which is a bit of a shame because they generally add a lot of fun and flavor to the story(s) but the work does not suffer as a result of them being absent.

The other absence here is that there is not as much of the romance that we usually see in this series. I do not mind a bit of romance but it often feels a bit over the top for me so I welcome this absence.

Overall these are just good stories well told.

If you are unfamiliar with the series it is a mix of romance, sci-fi and modern detective story. I generally say the mix is about 25/25/50 with slight variations depending on the particular novel.

This one I would say is more like 7/25/68 which is fine by me.

Three novellas w Eve and Rourke.

These three books are novellas of Eve and Rourke. They are tasty little morsels while waiting for one of two books that come yearly. Twice a year is not enough Eve and Rourke. I wish she would write more novellas. Hint Hint!!!
Eternity of Death
A woman has been killed and has two puncture marks on her neck. Eve meets a man who truly believes he is a vampire. While her team make suggestions of garlic, stakes and crosses, Eve just laughs at them. The guy drinks blood but it is laced with a crap ton of illegals. The end is funny because Eve uses the stake to get him off her. She drives it into his belly. Peabody is the first of many to tell her it was suppose to be the heart. Doesn’t matter, he’s down and Eve wins. She and Rourke walk into the sunrise.

Ritual in Death
In a Rourke hotel Eve is suffering a party w dress and heels. In walks a man covered in blood w a splitting headache. In the suite 606 a ritualistic event took place and a woman savagely killed. So far anyone with knowledge has a splitting headache. The occult at work. Rourke talks w a witch (Eve obviously would not sanction this). This takes place in a Rourke property w two of Rourke’s people. Little spat between Eve and Rourke. They fight like kids.

Missing in Death
The Staten Ferry has enough blood in a woman’s bathroom to know the victim is dead. Where is the body? A wife and mother who doesn’t remember the incident ends up missing for an hour. Where was she? The killer has a tie to Summerset.

This book is a selection of three shorter stories that take place in the "20's" of the In Death Series. They had a common theme of something potentially supernatural or just plain weird about the murders.

Eternity in Death - a woman looking for immortality is instead left dead, devoid of blood, with two puncture marks in her neck. This leads Eve to an underground vampire nightclub and a sociopath. There wasn't ever really a doubt in this book about who did it - the crime was just hard to prove.

Ritual in Death A naked, bloody man stumbles into a party attended by Eve and Roarke. They find a ritualistic killing and investigate a Satanic cult. Eve and Roarke are angrier than I'm used to seeing them, at each other and the world in this. But really, it was a nasty situation - I guess the anger was justified.

Missing in Death A woman disappears from a ferry, and there is a bloody crime scene with no body, and no good way to explain where it went. This one was my favorite of the three. I especially liked how it ended.

Another thing I enjoyed about these is how Peabody got totally into each of the supernatural explanations - buying garlic, worrying about witches, satan worshipers, and aliens. It was fun seeing that contrast to Eve and her pragmatic approach.
