I am generally a Riley Poe fan. I enjoyed the first 2 books in this series, where tattoo artist Riley Poe becomes entangled in the world of vampires. In book 3, Riley is still dealing with the aftermath of having 2 vampire bites. Victorian warns that Riley needs help, but of course neither Riley or Eli, or any of Eli's family listen. So, Riley begins changing and not in a good way. To bring Riley back, drastic measures will have to be taken, the question is whether it will be too late.

The overall storyline in Eventide is good. Riley is slowly turning evil, Valerian's blood is affecting her and continuing to change her. However, I felt that the execution and evolution of the story was lacking. The story felt disjointed. Early on, I was wondering why Riley wouldn't admit she was having troubles. Also, despite being constantly watched, no one stepped in to help Riley. Everyone expressed their concerns about her state, but no one did ANYTHING to change it. It didn't make sense to me. Eli is professed to be so overprotective, but then he doesn't do anything but watch over Riley.

When it is finally time to step in and help Riley, Eli and his family must seek help from Victorian's father, so they travel to Romania. This is about where the story takes a leap in a whole different direction. New characters are introduced, and a whole new plot line is started. The timing seemed very odd, and it didn't fit the story. One minute, the plot was on Riley changing, and the new consequences of keeping her sane and human, and the next, a supernatural police group is randomly involved. This felt very off to me, and the abrupt change in the story didn't sit well, the new character's side stories felt drawn out, and they took away from the focus of the book.

Riley's relationship with Eli was also fairly frustrating to me. One minute, Riley is absolutely in love with Eli, and the next she is so angry that he's overprotective and overbearing. The on and off, back and forth gets old. Eli is who he is, and we get it, Riley likes to be the tough girl. It doesn't need to constantly be expressed.

By the end, Riley has even more vampiric changes to deal with, and her future is going a whole new direction. The story came together pretty good in the end, and future story lines are set up. I will say this for Eventide, the action and powers are intriguing and diverse. The series is about to change, and go in a new direction, which holds promise. However, I am not sure if I will continue with the series, there is a lot of repetition about Riley being tough, Eli being overbearing, and Victorian pining over Riley. After 3 books in the series, I am fairly invested in the characters, but book 4 will not be on priority to-read list.

I didn't expect this!!! WoW!!!

I loved Elle Jasper's first two books and I think Riley and Eli are fabulous, this book, however, took me totally by surprise...

I knew that Eventide had to pick up from where Everdark left off and that somehow the adventure had to draw to some sort of closure... and it did, but it has marked the beginning of something totally unexpected and new...

Riley meets new people, or maybe I should say new types of beings and this is where the story is going to go in the future... it seems our Riley and our drop 'dead' Eli are going to be a team and head off to Scotland... I can't write anymore because I don't want to spoil this book for anyone...

I have also seen mixed reviews about Eventide, for me though, it was unexpected and just as fantastic as the first two, if not better... I love Elle's style of writing and I will definately be picking up future episodes of two of my favourite characters!

The Dark Ink Chronicles is a series that started out edgy and oh so cool featuring a tattooed rocker protagonist, a steamy Southern setting, and a deliciously dangerous love interest. The sequel was a tad disappointing with a much slower pace and not as much character development as I was hoping for. Sadly, EVENTIDE, the latest installment, is even more of a let down.

Where do I start? EVENTIDE feels like a rush job. Not the pacing, which is sluggish at best, but it just doesn’t feel like anyone involved with this book cared enough to make it good. Nearly every scene feels mechanical and completely lacking in emotion. When we last saw Riley, she was trying to adapt to her new abilities or Tendencies after surviving a vampire bite. Dark urges and blackouts begin to plague her and she starts to have out of body experiences where she slips into the minds/past of others. She does this a lot. Like half the book is made up of these various out of body scenes. It felt like the entire middle of the book was one long chapter stuck on repeat. Riley would fall asleep, have an out of body experience, Eli would shake her awake and say the exact same thing to her and get all anxious about the changes happening to her, Riley would dismiss his concerns, and then the whole thing would repeat.

When that cycle finally changed, it was almost like the author was trying to completely change her series and set up an entirely new premise for future books involving Riley leaving behind Savannah and her tattoo parlor to join WUP, Worldwide Unexplained Phenomenon in Scotland which is described as a detective/police organization that hunts demons and other evil creatures (you can read a full description about this next book titled BLACK FALLEN on the authors website). It was such a massive departure that I don’t even know what to think. Why not just put this series out of it’s misery and start fresh, as opposed to tearing down and restructuring this one? I don’t get it.

I’ve read other series which stumble and lose steam as they go along, but none more grievous of late than The Dark Ink Chronicles. AFTERLIGHT was a great book, and I highly recommend it as a standalone, but EVERDARK and especially EVENTIDE just didn’t live up to the debut and what should have been a great series.

Now that Riley has been bitten by both Valerian and Victorian, she's having to deal with a lot of strange voices and happenings and sometimes she's unsure what's real and what's not. On top of all that, she doesn't tell anyone and continues to act as if everything is alright. Things only fall apart when she can no longer account for huge losses of time and ends up attacking people she cares about.

Okay...I liked the book but it's just a tad confusing and for about 65% of the book, you have to deal with all the voices in her head and "dreams" about weird happenings. I just think it was a bit too much and went on for too long. I couldn't even keep up with who she was fighting or who she was making out with!! And then abruptly, it changes gears. Riley's okay and now WUP or Worldwide Unexplained Phenomena, a group of paranormals that fight for good, want to recruit her. Oh but wait a minute, still have to take care of Valerian, so off they go to do that, opps..I mean off Riley goes to take care of him.

The saving grace for me was Riley and Eli...and Seth. I love Riley and Eli together even if they do seem "twilightish" and Riley was a bit of a jerk in this book and Eli was a bit too overprotective. They do have some good moments. And Seth was great...I loved him being worried about his sister. I just loved all the family times but unfortunately the ways things are going, it seems like there will be less of those especially with all the other paranormals coming into the picture.

♥ "I'll love you forever, too."

I really tried to read this slowly, I wanted to make it last, savor it. But instead I found myself devouring it. I couldn't stop thinking about Riley, Eli, Vic and the whole damn cast of awesome characters.
There's so much that can't be said without ruining the experience for everyone else.
In this book we are introduced to more vamps, werewolves and immortal beings. I hope that means that the series will continue instead of this being the last book in the series.
I really feel for Eli, he loves Riley so much and has to work so damn hard not to take away her independence and free spirit. Thank god Riley realizes when the time is right to let Eli take the reins. He's to awesome for words...Damn I would love to run in to him in a dark alley and get my sweat on!!! His story is one of love, courage, strength, and Riley.
Our girl Riley is one kiss ass female, you can't help but love her. She's smart, sassy, strong, and sexy all rolled in to one. And she has Eli in her corner...hot damn...damn awesome team.
Riley is evolving and changing so fast and so much that it scares the shit out of everyone around her. She seems to be aware of some it but she's losing alot of time, things are happening to her that she can't explain, and sometimes can't remember.
This is most definitely one of my all time favorite series.
And if you haven't read this book or this series...all I can say is:
"ARE YOU SHITTING ME!!!"
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Riley knew having vampire venom running in her veins would mean increasing un-human tendencies but she never thought she’d actually turn. Valerian’s venom is acting on its own though and slowly Riley is turning into the thing she never wanted to be. Flying across the world and putting her trust into people she doesn’t know may be the only way to stop the progression. Victorian and Valerian’s father may be the key to saving her from herself. But what will have three powerful vampires venom do to her and how will she be able to retain even a little part of herself? With Eli’s help and love she might be able to save herself from the darkness closing in, but for how long?

I can’t tell you how long I have waited for this book…but it seems like an eternity. Eventide is the third book in Elle Jasper’s Dark Ink Chronicles following Riley, a tattoo artist who isn’t quite human anymore and her fight against a vampire hell-bent on her destruction. Each book in this series gets better and better and I expected a lot going into this one and Elle Jasper seriously delivered by giving her readers one fun ride with the promise of more to come.
At the end of the second book, Everdark, Riley was being kidnapped by Victorian, who claims to be doing it for her own good. Talk about a cliff hanger huh? Victorian is constantly at odds with Riley’s vampire boyfriend Eli and Eli’s family. Victorian comes from an extremely powerful vampire family and with his venom as well has his crazy brother Valerian’s vemon now inside Riley he feels he should be able to claim her as his own. Only problem is that with so much powerful vamp venom in her Riley is acquiring tendencies that are not merely human but not quite vampire. Slowly she is becoming a blood sucker against her will and Valerian’s power over her seems to be increasing. She is suffering from time loss as well her vision that she can’t be sure if they are real or just a figment of her fragmented brain. I envied her ability to stay sane as long as possible. Riley is one tough cookie.
On a last ditch effort to cleanse her blood of Valerian’s evil toxins Eli lets Victorian’s dad inject his venom to overpower that of Valerian. What results is a quirky triangle in which Riley loves Eli, Victorian pines for her and Victorian father offers her the throne. The love triangle was a bit expected given the direction of this book, but still I found it hot. I am curious to find out if Riley feels a connection to Victorian simply because of his venom running through her veins or if its…deeper. Throw in a new group of HOT warriors that need Riley’s help to overcome their own enemies and you’ve got a well rounded book with the possibility of more heart pounding stories to come. The world building throughout the series continues to grow and with the addition of the new characters becoming even more shadowy than before. Nix is back of course with her perky, loving attitude which I have always adored. I hope we continue to see more of her in the following books even though it sounds like Riley may be hanging up her tattoo gun for bigger and definitely more dangerous things.
I have always enjoyed Eli’s band of family even though they sound a whole lot like the Cullens to me. Nevertheless, everyone needs a family and so I suppose after the huge success of Twilight any other vampire family would probably sound the same. Together they move like a team, completely in sync and the camaraderie is well done. Each has their own personality but I like how the story stays true to Eli and Riley and what they face with the family just acting like supporting characters. Like previous books the heat level between Eli and Riley was scorching. I absolutely love Eli. Dark and protective? SWOON.
Don’t start with this one, go back and read Afterlight first and then Everdark. You need to appreciate the way the world and author alike are growing. Plus you won’t fully understand this series without first reading the previous books. Eventide is a great addition to a series I continue to love and I simply can’t wait for the next book!

I give Eventide by Elle Jasper 5 stars!

*Gizmo's Review*

Riley Poe is having all sorts of problems this time out. She's been kidnapped by Victorian who wants to run away with her to Romania and make her his forever. She's been losing track of time, she's having hallucinations, she see's herself actually killing and drinking blood from humans, and her superhuman powers may be causing more problems than they're worth.

Her brother Seth, and best Friend Nyx, are scary worried about Riley but can't do anything to prevent the inevitable from happening; a dual venomed quickening into a vampire. She also has to deal with a pair of vampires, Eli, and Victorian, who want her for themselves and won't back down an inch to let her breathe. Of course, we can't forget the most dangerous vampire of them all; Valerian who has a major agenda that includes Riley. Ah, but least we forget the most powerful Arcos around; Julian who wants Riley to be his queen thanks to her new found powers.

So, this book ends up being a transitional novel and the likely an end to Riley Poe as a tattoo artist. For three books all we've heard about is how awesome of a tattoo artist Riley is. Now, she is forced to walk away from her life's work because of the events of the previous three books.

The whole thing with Riley transitioning into something more than human, but not vampire, sounds like a human-vampire hybrid to me. The ending with Valerian was rushed, and took absolutely no time whatsoever to finalize. Seriously what was the point? What was the point of Riley finding out the truth behind her own mothers death just so she could look on as Valerian is allowed to leave?

Most interesting line of the book:

"My blades press tightly against my skin at his weight. Everything he does, I realize, proves his love for me. Proves his possessiveness for me. And I can’t even return the verbal sentiment? Worse yet, his overprotectiveness is starting to really grate on my nerves. God, I’m such a bitch. A messed up one at that. Damaged goods to the nth degree." Riley Poe pg 63

The new cast of characters Jake Andorra, Darius, Gabriel, Sydney Maspeth, and Ginger Slater are all part of the WUP. You now have a group of vampires, werewolves, and immortals working together for the WUP - Worldwide Unexplained Phenomena in order to stop Black Fallen Angels and a werewolf war. You even have the will you marry me aspect that should have come at the END of the series, and not after this book.

So, again, this story ends up being a bridge from the first three stories of this series, to the new Riley Poe series where she, Eli and Seth will be working for the WUP while Riley learns all about her new abilities including the ability to see a persons past, and mind manipulation.

At this point, I am not sure it would be worth my time to read the next book in the series. However, December is a long way away and things do change over the course of 8 months.

Riley is going through changes. Having been bitten by Victorian and Valerian, she has all that strigoi power in her and is starting to take over.

At first it's just dreams, then she's losing chunks of time. Her tendencies are becoming more evident and harder to fight. But of course, Riley thinks she can handle everything herself. Even when she's getting out of control.

The pace of this book was a bit slow, I think, and a lot of that is because we spend a lot of time in Riley's head and in her "dreams".

Eli is still just as sexy and as in love with Riley but she keeps him at a distance for most of this book. Him and most of the other characters are left on the outside while her bond with Victorian is strengthened.

There are many ups and downs, and we even get to meet Victorian's father. You'll probably enjoy Riley's new powers though. That is when the story started to get more interesting. She can now see something that happened in someone's life just by touching them.

By the end of the book I felt like this was more about setting up where the series will go from here since its taking them to a different place and with a whole new group of people.

I find the current setting of the series to be one of my favorite things in the series because it's that southern vampire type story I've always loved, so I'm a little skeptical as to how I'll deal with the fact that they'll be leaving there now. Nonetheless, I'm excited that there will be at least two more books in this series. I am curious to see how this new bond with Victorian will play into her relationship with Eli.

Eventide (Dark Ink Chronicles #3) by Elle Jasper If you read just one paranormal series this year, let it be THE DARK INK CHRONICLES. They’re sexy. They’re evil personified. They’re adventure, passion and one hell of a freaky ride! Bet you can’t stop at book one because the journey to the end of book three is the best part yet!

EVENTIDE, book three of THE DARK INK CHRONICLES, continues where EVERDARK, book two, left us anxiously waiting for what happens next in this addictive series. I can’t tell you about EVENTIDE without spoiling part of AFTERLIGHT or EVERDARK, so I suggest that you read both of those books before reading my review below. If you want to know more about book one or book two, follow the links to my reviews.

Trying to review a series like this and do it justice is a reviewer’s hardest task. Not to mention the fact that it’s impossible not to spoil something in the process, even if you do your best to stick to the beginning of the book. I can’t imagine any paranormal or horror fan not loving this series. It’s sick…in an awesome way. In EVENTIDE, evil personified not only continues, but deviates into the mind, twisting everything you thought you knew into a journey you must travel, knowing that it might just freak you out in the process. You can taste it, feel it and can’t help but become immersed within it. If your dreams are easily influenced, read this book during the day or suffer the consequences. It’s so real that you’ll be looking over your shoulder on dark, dreary days.

EVENTIDE begins with tattoo artist Riley Poe being captured by Victorian Arcos, a Romanian strigoi vampire, without the protection of her French vampire lover, Eli Dupré, and his family. Victorian has mind control over Riley and she cannot resist him, even if she could control her physical body, which she cannot while under his power. They’ve left the carnage at the Tunnel 9 Club, but the memories still haunt Riley while she tries to find a way to escape Victorian. Everyone she knows and loves are still fighting rogue vampires at Tunnel 9, which bothers her more than being kidnapped by Victorian. She knows he won’t harm her, that his actions are simply to protect her, but she will not go with him willingly without a fight. Riley is human with extraordinary tendencies, thanks to Victorian and his brother Valerian, who bit her and infused their strigoi vampire DNA with her own special blood. But even those tendencies are no match for Victorian’s mind control at first, but Riley is morphing, changing into something that even Victorian can’t predict or have power over.

Of course, Eli and his family don’t give up until they find Riley and rescue her from Victorian. It takes all of Riley’s persuasion to keep Eli from killing Victorian. What none of them understand is that Victorian knows some of what’s next for Riley Poe and they’re going to need him eventually. He assures them all of this fact, but they’re sure they will be able to help Riley with whatever she faces. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s going to take more than Victorian or Eli, or Gullah magic from her surrogate grandparents, to help Riley avoid the evil that’s in her future, including more inner strength than Riley even knows she has. Riley begins to experience just a fraction of that evil in her dreams and in true Riley fashion, enabled by the strength she’s gaining as she morphs, assumes she’ll be able to control her own destiny, even if it scares her. Riley is about to experience more than she could ever imagine while learning the truth about the past and present in Romania.

Will Riley and Eli’s love for one another be enough to combat the war raging inside Riley, or will the evil win against those who are born to eliminate it?

For those who have been following this series as anxiously as I have, all the characters you’ve loved from previous books are back. Some are more predominate than others, but you’ll feel the magic of the Gullah, the love and strength of Riley’s brother and her best friend, the mystery of the vampiric society, as well as the seductive aura of Savannah’s streets. But that’s not all, which is the fun part, and I can’t wait to hear what you think of what happens next! So seductive and engrossing!

Expect to inhale EVENTIDE like nectar while savoring it like fine wine because this rollercoaster ride surpasses the first two books. THE DARK INK CHRONCLES series should be in every paranormal booklover’s collection…if not for its uniqueness, then for its ability to completely mesmerize the reader. Elle Jasper engages your senses with anticipation, revelation and an expediency of awe while gorging yourself within her world until each book is deliciously devoured. EVENTIDE is all that and more. If you thought AFTERLIGHT and EVERDARK were enthralling, then EVENTIDE will blow your mind. Reading this series isn’t just an option, it’s essential if you love books that draw you to them like a moth to a flame. Oh, and let’s not forget about the erotic heartbeat threaded beautifully throughout the adventure. What’s not to love? Like an addict, I’m salivating for what has become my obsession, and I can’t wait for book four to keep me up all night. Again.

I loved AFTERLIGHT and was not so into EVERDARK but EVENTIDE got me a little more excited about the future of the Dark Ink Chronicles series.

EVERDARK ended on a bit of a cliffhanger and EVENTIDE picks up exactly where it left off. I have always liked Riley. She is funky, is comfortable in her own skin and loves and protects those close to her. She is still struggling with the venom coursing through her body and book 3 deals with her losing chunks of time and not knowing what she is doing. She ends up in the hands of those she never would have thought she would be getting help from. Eli is there throughout it all but Riley does a lot of hiding and pushing him away because she doesn't want to admit there is a problem. The pacing was pretty slow and even though things happen there wasn't a lot put into the story as a whole. When all the stuff with Riley is finally out in the open at the end of the book is where I really felt the series was picking up again. Some new characters are thrown into the mix and I feel that a lot of great things will come of their arrival in future books.

There isn't a lot of action in EVENTIDE but it ends on a note that promises a lot in the future. I love Eli and Riley together and when Riley was in her right mind their relationship was full of hotness. I have liked the settings of all the books and EVENTIDE kept with that. For those disappointing in book 2 I think you will start to get a little more into the series again if you give it another chance.

What can i say, Im falling for the underdog like always.Im starting to develop feelings for the lovely Victorian even though Eli definitly won me over by the end with his little shocker. I look forward to the next book with these new "creatures" added to the story. It'll be a pleasent change from the vampire theme. I loved the dark Riley and making her stronger and even more kick ass. It was a really interesting turn of events. But i do kinda find the fact that everyone wants RIley a little tiresome. Its getting old, I wish someone wouldnt fall for her just to have some kind of change. No doubt shes a hottie but can we have at least one guy who doesnt want to throw the woman over his shoulder and take her to his lair? I'm just saying other girls are hot too not just Riley Poe. But all in all Bring on book 4.

3.5 stars...Full review to follow, twimom227.com ... but here's a teaser!

Riley Poe has 'tendencies,' and she's not just your average tat artist with awesome ink and quirks. She's more. Four times more. Not only is she a phenomenal artist, she knows how to kick ass and take names later! Eligius Dupree...dreamboat that he is, is completely and utterly in love with her. With a bunch of vampires, werewolves and others in the mix, the story is full of surprises!

Ugh this was such a tedious read.

The butchering od the french language was driving me crazy! It's okay to get one or two sentences wrong. But EVERY single one of them? Even Google translate can do better!
Also, the fact that every new powerful vampire we meet is labeled "freaking sexy" and automatically wants the heroine is redundant and annoying.

Bref, with all these little pet peeves I couldn't even concentrate on the plot!
I didn't want to give up this series but I now have no interest in putting myself through more of this torture.

The journey of Riley was steady from the start.she s smart & independent, likes to take care of matters of her own.i like her characterisation.
So many new characters has been introduced.i don't remember all.i think this story is going to be in a different direction.hope it'll be good.
I can't tolerate that an entire family Vic, Val and his father too want her.

Riley is quickening and it's making her ugly, a big chunk is devoted to this and I was ready to move on before the author finally moved to the next part of the story. Introduction of new bad guys and new good guys and groundwork for the next book.

Interesting. Like where it ended and honestly? The last two books seem off course of what I liked about the first two as this one took everything i liked and threw it in the trash but i thought the ending was cute so I'm going to pretend there's not 2 more books and you should to.

Quick & Dirty: Wild ride.

Opening Sentence: I can still hear the human screams inside my head.

The Review:

I guess it could be said that I did like this book. Jasper’s imagery and settings are well written, and she does have an innate ability to put your mind right where she wants it, geographically. Her characters are sexy, their thoughts and actions exactly what you would expect of them, and you can practically hear their voices, with those awesome accents, right in your head. But as for the rest…well let’s just say I found it lacking.

I spent a bunch of my time reading this book and scratching my head, going “I don’t get it” (insert head tilt and gum smacking here) and I still kind of don’t. I felt like I was being tossed all over the place, the story going here, doing this, then going there, doing that. I admit to being somewhat lost. Ok, so don’t get me wrong. The story line itself is fine, but it almost seems like the individual elements could have been drawn out longer, into more descriptive segments, or at least somewhat more cohesively run together. I understand the main character is experiencing life in this sort of jumbled mess at this point, but I don’t know that reading it that way is conducive to the readers understanding of the where’s, when’s, how’s or why’s. In fact, I reread a crap load of passages assuming I missed something. Nope, still confused, still not getting it.

Riley continues progressing into the madness that is Valerian, even losing large chunks of time and possibly attacking people, even her neighbor. Eli, his father, another local vamp and an agent all escort Riley to the home of the crazy vamp’s father, in the hopes to defeat the bond that has its hold on Riley. Riley, now sporting two more sets of vampy DNA, is an extraordinary mostly human, who now understands new foreign languages, can see your life events by merely touching you, and has strange feelings for even more men. Eli is still her one and only, Seth is still her baby brother with tendencies. The crazy person ruling Riley’s innermost nightmares is then captured and returned to his homeland to receive his punishment. A paranormal CIA-type agent wants Riley, her brother and Eli to join his mixed species group of associates to fight supernaturally criminal bad guys, and they agree. I think that sort of sums it up.

Though none of this should stop you guys from reading it, especially if you liked the previous books, like I did.

Notable Scene:

With one hand, Eli palms the back of my head, bringing our mouths a whisper apart. He stares, the firelight licking his skin, and he kisses me deeply, then brushes whispered words against my ear from a language I don’t know, words I had no understanding of. I didn’t dare ask their meaning.

Suddenly they register.

I will love you forever.

Slowly, I wrap my arms around Eli and press my body as close to his as I can. I feel every inch of him against me, and there’s not an ounce of flesh not claimed by him. Grasping his jaw with my fingers, I pull his head close, my lips to his ear.

“I love you forever, too,” I whisper back.

When Eli pulls away and looks at me, surprise first fills his cerulean blue eyes. It’s quickly followed by more love than I’d ever hoped to find. One corner of his mouth lifts in the sexiest grin I’ve ever seen.

Then, he kisses me. I feel every ounce of love in that kiss.

If nothing else stays with me for all of my days, I hope this moment in time does. This kiss. The look in Eli’s eyes. God almighty, I pray it does.

For the first time in…Jesus, I can’t even remember, I fall asleep in Eli’s arms.

Eventide picks up where book 2, Everdark, left off. Riley has been bitten by both Arcos brothers and Victorian uses his power of suggestion to abduct her. His intention is to take her to his father to counteract the effects of his evil brother, Valerian’s bite. But his plan is foiled when Eli, true to his word, comes for Riley. He takes her with him as Victorian leaves them with an ominous prediction that Riley is changing, that she will kill, and they will bring her back to him for his help, and of course he will be waiting.

Back home in Savannah, everyone notices that Riley has changed; she’s more mean-spirited and unpredictable. Everybody watches her every move, they’re worried about her; none more concerned than Eli, who swears to make things right for her.

Riley is finding herself craving human blood and even stalking prey. She keeps losing time and having vivid dreams of killing, but are they really just dreams? It ultimately causes those she loves to turn to an unlikely source for help. But will it be enough?

I really wanted to like this book and it was an improvement over its predecessor, Everdark, but it still wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be.

The book started out extremely slow and sluggish with all of Riley’s internal dialogue telling the reader what has happened. I expect that a little in the beginning, but it kept continuing even after Eli ‘rescued’ her. I would much rather live it through her than hear her reflect on it, it kept me at a distance from the story. But luckily it did eventually stop and I was able to feel what she was going through.

There was a lot going on in this novel, but there were several times I found myself confused. There were the dreams Riley was having …. was it really happening or was it just a dream? I was OK with those and understood Jasper wanted the reader just as confused as Riley herself. But when we got to the part where Riley’s new tendencies were manifesting and WUP was trying to enlist her, I found it a bit much. When the different people touched her and she saw their memories, several of which would show a memory and then a flashback to an older memory and I had a very hard time understanding it all. I had to go back and reread parts and still walked away scratching my head, especially where Pax was concerned. Is he friend? Enemy?

I’m glad to see that Eli and Riley’s relationship has improved in this one since Eli can no longer read all her thoughts straight out of her head.

“Rest,” he whispers against my temple, and despite my sleepiness, the feel of his lips moving across my skin makes me shiver. “I’ll be here when you wake up.”

“Oh, God,” I mumble, sliding my arm over Eli’s chest and snuggling close. “Have we become that old couple that doesn’t have sex anymore?”

Eli’s chuckle rumbles against my ear. “We had sex this morning.”

“Okay,” I say already being pulled into slumber.”

But I’m also starting to grow a little soft spot for Victorian as well. This book with his pledge to wait forever for her makes me truly wonder who she will end up with by the end of this series.

And, finally we have a conclusion to the Valerian storyline! Yes, it’s done in a way that he could always reemerge later in the series, but at least it puts an end to their current turmoil concerning him. And, it looks like the next book, Black Fallen, will have a completely different storyline, one I hope that truly breathes some much needed fresh air into the series. And, I’m personally hoping to see more Lucian and maybe even some Gabriel (insert eyebrow wiggle here)!

How did we end up here?

It’s the third book in the series and it would appear I’m developing a liking for PNR smut. I’ll take it.

Okay, book. You've got fifty pages. Go!

I’m watching Riley quickly de-evolve into this unlikable super snatch and it’s kind of cranking my ass. Since I could read the book in a sitting I’m just going to follow through until the end. Plus I’ve come this far so why not?

What worked . . .

The last third or so of the book was its own redemption, really. I finally got to see the old Riley back, with super awesome powers of awesomeness, of course. That everyone’s so incredibly jealous of and makes all manner of guy want to bang her and whatever. But really, the kicker, was the introduction of new creatures and this organization that polices the supernatural world when shit gets out of hand. Jasper sucked me right back in and while I’m pretty much over Riley and her uncanny ability to get every guy in the world slathering over her I want to know more about this greater world that’s opening up. Namely angels. It got me good. Timing is everything and all that.

Plus Jasper that this rather awesome ability to loop interesting back into an otherwise uninteresting moment in the story. Since a solid chunk of the book was just Riley bitchifying Jasper kept little things happening, even if ti was just Riley losing her mind yet again. It was enough for me in the context of the greater story arc. I guess I just like her writing. Not the greatest in the world, as I’ve said before, but it hits me right. I really don’t have a good explanation for it.

What didn't work . . .

EVENTIDE is the book that sees Riley change into a mega bitch and, quite frankly, it goes on for a bit longer than it’s welcome. At first she just started off a bit cranky but then she just got nasty and I really didn’t like being in her head. It was just a rancid place to be and I think this part of the story would have been better off being told from the points of view of the people around her. You already knew what was happening to her and Riley was about as deep as a puddle in this one so it’s not like her inner thoughts offered much insight so why not get out of her head completely? I think the story would have been more enjoyable that way.

In EVERDARK the chapters were prefaced by snippets from Riley, a commentary about something to come in the chapter itself. In EVENTIDE they were blurbs from other characters about Riley and it felt like a cheap interview on plastic furniture had just been conducted. They were annoying and ultimately useless to the greater story. Maybe because they were so Riley-centric that they really got on my nerves, as if the characters only feel in terms of Riley. At this point the world is starting to revolve around her and I’m kind of over it.

And her relationship with Victorian was just . . . weird. It somewhat served a purpose in this book but at this point he’s just a creep. A creep that Riley warms up to. Weird. I hope it’s fleshed out in later books, and not necessarily that way either.

And in the end . . .

I already have the fourth book on my Goodreads WANT list. I can’t help it. I want to keep coming back. It’s like an addiction. Although I have a feeling this might be the make or break book. If I don’t enjoy it I’ll probably stop reading the series. There isn’t enough sex to keep me entertained and Riley really isn’t my friend anymore so it’s going to come down to the world but I’m still interested in seeing how it pans out.

Riley Poe managed to get bitten by two very powerful strigoi at the beginning of the series. She is now mentally linked with both Arcos brothers, Victorian - the not-so-bad vampire and Valerian - the really-really-bad vampire. Not only can she talk with both of them, inside her head, she has slowly begun the transformation into one of them and into something truly evil. Riley's visions have continued in "Eventide" but now they are taking away chunks of time. What only seems to be a few minutes is, in all actuality, hours. She has also started to move around unconsciously; walking outside, across a room, etc. And in typical Riley fashion, she decides these events aren't worth talking to anyone about. She can take care of herself, handle all of her issues, and kick anyone's a$$.....

.....And this is the reason why the Dark Ink Chronicles series will most likely never get a 5 star rating from me. Riley's incessant belief that she can take care of herself when she's been proven wrong time-and-time again, is a huge source of frustration in this series. It's okay to be a strong heroine - in fact, I encourage it - but everyone, including strong heroes, have moments when they must pull up their big girl, or big boy, pants and admit they need help. Help from those with hundreds of years experience. Help from those that are stronger and wiser. Help from those that may not know the answer, but know someone who might. I suppose if Riley was written differently the books wouldn't be quite as long but I grow weary of her holier/mightier-than-thou attitude.

Other than Riley's overconfidence, the book, in itself, is a great continuation of the series. The vampiric tendencies that Riley starts developing coincide with the actual turning of a human to a vampire and this aspect is developed wonderfully. We still get to see her struggle with her Victorian and Valerian inner monologues, all the while no one else, i.e. the Dupres, are able to read her thoughts. This is partly how Riley is able to keep such secrecy with Eli.

Riley finally snaps completely about halfway through the book, and the ensuing pages are not pretty. She spends a lot of time in and out of consciousness. When she awakens, although she's sluggish, she tries to attack anyone and everyone in her path. She has the vampire thirst and wants nothing more than human blood to quench it. Her memory of those around her, including Eli and Seth, is non-existent. She no longer recognizes anyone or anything. In order to save Riley, Eli and his family must take her to Romania and hand her over to the father of both Victorian and Valerian, Julian Arcos. To override the two sets of strigoi DNA swimming through her body, Julian must do the unthinkable to Riley. Then --- Bring on Eli, who isn't about to be outdone!!

After Riley's encounter with Julian, she has, yet again, different sets of abilities. In order to introduce some of these said powers Riley gets bombarded by some new paranormal characters. I figure that these characters will be our lead into Book 4. These new characters seem interesting enough but the way they are brought into the story is somewhat uncomfortable and disjointed. The why's of these new characters are understandable and will make for nice continuing storylines, there just needed to be a smoother transition is all.

I will definitely continue the series, however, and I hope that one day, Riley will learn to trust those around her more.

This book, deserves props for just the amount of sheer genius that was put into it. The female HUMAN with VAMPIRE tendencies. One that will live a life with an almost lifespan of a vampire. One that has tendencies of a vampire. But one that doesn't have to drink blood... (Yet, though I'm only guessing. Yes she had to drink some blood during the book. Yes she was bitten, twice to begin with. But she doesn't have to feed. Something that is different. Something that is new. Something that to my knowledge, hasn't been done yet.) She's got a heart beat... But for how long? That's the question I REALLY want answered.

I finished the previous book earlier today. And the previous book had such a HUGE cliffhanger. One of which, hung me. So I went looking for answers. So I just had to continue on... Little did I know that I would FINISH this book, PDQ.. I wanted to know what happened as soon as each and every development happened. Or has happened, or did happen. I couldn't just put it down... As you can see. And when it was over, there wasn't exactly a cliffhanger. Just a sense of... this is what is going to happen next, and soon. It was almost like, the author was going to leave it as a trilogy. And have a continuation series at some point... Maybe when Riley became fully vampire? But changed her mind. Riley wants to live in the now while she can. Before everything changes even more. And with Riley Poe's life? It will.

She was going through changes, many of changes that were frightening everyone around her. She wasn't the same person... It was like to some who knew her when she was using. That was who she was. To others? She was Dark, evil. Turning into someone she isn't like... She wasn't the Riley Poe that everyone around her knew and loved. She was pushing everyone away, she was having visions of may have been her, or may have not been her. All she knew is she wanted it. She wanted the darkness. She wanted the blood. She was mean spirited. And all of a sudden? She turned on everyone she knew, not really knowing she was doing it. She forgot herself, her very being, her spirit, her heart. She fought against everyone and anything.... I guess the right word is feral. All to find out after all of that, that she was going through a quickening. All to find out that she was bitten by in total three strigoi (Victorian, Valerian, and Julian) and then followed up by Eli, because he wanted a piece of him... in her. Not only Strigoi Vampire bites, his as well. I think that's going to bite them all in the ass at some point, but time will tell.
She now has even more powers. And now has the WUP wanting her to help them... she has conditions. As we will find out in the next book, coming against the next big bad.
How much more can this women handle is my question....
But this book, this series... Damn... it's kept me on my toes. It's kept me wanting more. It's just awesome.

3.5 Stars

I really wanted to enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed the first two in this series--but somehow along the way, the story lost its fizz and just can't stand up against the seductiveness of Afterlight and Everdark.

Eventide starts off where Everdark ended: Riley has been taken by the Russian strigoi vamp, Victorian, and she experiences haunting images/dreams. And worse, she is losing time--hours--where she doesn't remember what she has done, much less, how the hell she got there.

Her doesn't-give-a-shit-attitude and her change of personality leaves her friends worried and wondering what the hell is going on. They all know Riley has the blood of two powerful strigoi vampires flowing through her veins, but this drastic change in her behavior makes them start to question whether Riley is strong enough to fight the darkness that threatens to consume her.

Eli Dupre, her sexy vampire boyfriend, is determined to save her before its too late. And the only way to prevent Riley from completely changing, is to hand her over to the man who also wants Riley for himself--Victorian.

This is the part of the book that I truly did enjoy. We get to see a softer side to Vic and my heart goes out to that emo-Russian vamp. He loves Riley. And knowing that Eli has her heart doesn't change that fact. He will always love her wait for her forever. Sniff....

Eventide reads so differently from the first books. The reader spends a lot of time wondering what the hell is going on. The missing chunks of time, the hallucinations, the strange dreams--all come from Riley's point of view and are very confusing. But I could almost handle that...almost.

However, when Riley and Eli are in Russia, they met up with new characters who have their own stories to tell. We see these stories when Riley touches them and she is "flung" inside their heads--seeing what they have experienced--and the ride is all the more confusing to the reader. I felt a sensory overload coming on with the new names, plot twists, and none of it seemed to stick.

It was a case of too much information in a little bit of time and left me skimming some of it. GASP! I loathe to skim, but frankly, I couldn't help it. There was nothing there to hold me to the story. And for me, that's just so sad. Especially since I know all this build-up will come into play with the next book in the series.

Overall, I was unimpressed with Eventide, but there were redeemable parts and I will continue to read this sometimes charming, sometimes dark, and always smexy series.

I guess this wasn’t worse than Everdark, but it wasn’t an improvement either. Story-wise, Eventide was a kind a mess. First half is supposed to be about Riley dealing with her growing vampire tendencies while her and her friends try to find Victorian’s brother. This part of the book is really slow and uneventful. But then the book goes in a whole new direction, introducing us to a group of characters that call themselves the WUP (Worldwide Unexplained Phenomena), and they ask Riley and her friends to join them as they hunt for Fallen Angels. This departure from the first books didn’t really work for me for a couple of reasons. 1) I’m not the biggest fan of stories involving supernatural organizations. I don’t know why, but I never really have. And 2) Because of this, I feel that Valerian’s story is wrapped up way too fast. It just felt like the WUP was totally unneeded and took me out of the story.

The characters didn’t get any better either. Riley acts like a whiney little child throughout most of the book. Even though her vampire tendencies are making her more and more dangerous, she refuses to ask anyone for help, insisting that she can handle it all herself, even though she clearly can’t. And despite her serious lack of maturity and intelligence, all these single guys flock like she’s the most amazing woman they’d ever laid eyes on--even Victorian’s father. That’s very hard for me to believe. Her friends aren’t any better. Despite knowing that she’s struggling with this, all they do is sit back and watch. The only person who makes any kind of sense is Victorian, but of course nobody listens to him.

Speaking of Victorian, he’s probably the only reason I’d even consider picking up the next book. He’s the only interesting character. It’s shame Riley doesn’t really feel anything for him because I think their relationship would be much more interesting. While Eli and Riley started out as an interesting couple, their chemistry as completely burned out for me. Yes, there was less sex in this book between them, which I appreciate, but Eli is just too damn jealous and possessive. It’s too much. Even when she’s in trouble and needs Victorian and his father’s help, Eli STILL can’t put aside his jealous tendencies for her sake. He’s completely unappealing to me now.

I think all the potential for this series fizzled out for me.

“We’re vampires, Riley” he says pulling back and smiling, “No need to email when you can cyber chat”- he taps my temples- “here.”

Riley Poe is a world famous tattoo artist living in Savannah, Georgia with her adoptive godparents helping to raise her younger brother. Riley is not your average human, she is actually a human with tendencies after being bitten by two vampire brothers and was very lucky to escape being changed into one herself. Riley may not want to be a vampire but she is in love with one Eli Dupre, whose family made a deal with Riley’s Gullah godparents family hundreds of years ago to be the protectors of Savannah and the family takes their job very seriously.

I had a very hard time while reading this book and I honestly believe it’s because I’ve never read the series before and I was missing so much information that had happened in the previous two books. I really loved Riley and looking back on it I really wished that I would have caught myself up with the series before starting Eventide because it’s a great book I was was just spent the whole thing trying to catch up. This is definitely not a stand alone but I would recommend the series.

Riley is going through a very hard time in Eventide and a lot of the book is flashbacks or dreams. I honestly didn’t know if these were real or what was going on and again I was very confused. All of a sudden I felt the book took a very drastic twist and completely changed it’s direction. It happened so fast I thought I had skipped some chapters and keep going back and trying to figure out what happened. I really liked all the characters but since it’s a little far in the series you are expected to already know them and all the relationships (there are a lot) that are going on.

I found the set up for the next book interesting and I am going to try to give the series another chance. I hope that there is more of a back story with all of the new characters and I’m wondering of Mrs. Jasper isn’t going to take a page out of the Jeaniene Frost handbook and start a side series of friends of Riley and Eli. Again this is a great book but you need to read the series in order or you will as confused as I was and unable to really enjoy the world of Riley Poe.

As seen on Rabidreads.ca:

Eventide is most remarkable in the way it presents itself on the page.    Plenty of spacing between lines.    Healthy doses of italics.    Rather large epigraphs.    It makes for an inviting read of a well-built character.    Riley Poe may not be the most straight-laced of the residents of Savannah but she is willing to admit that and much much more.

Perhaps because of the line-spacing her thoughts feel less dense than they should.    I should specify this book is written in a hard first-person and only gets out of it through the previously mentioned tricks i.e. italics in which Riley may or may not be in her body and epigraphs in which some other character is providing a paragraph of his or her thoughts.

As a novel I am not sure it entirely works.    To Spark Notes the events that led up to these, events that keep in mind I had to sort through all fresh having not read book one or two (again, I know, so sorry), Riley must deal here with vampiric urges overtaking her.    Thus much of the struggle stems from Riley's psyche as she comes to grips, and fails to often, with what exactly she is.

Time skips frequently as Eventide plays up the unreliable narrator to an extreme.    Where this whole unreliable narrator thing falls short, however, is in just how much Riley's friends still adore her, for if you are going to have a narrator that maybe is not in full control of her thoughts or feelings, there should be more "Oh my gosh you're chewing on Rick, I'm not sure if you should be allowed in this household".

Basically no matter how out-of-control Riley might have become there is never any question that she will not do anything that will not make her a hero and if she did do anything evil the book leaves enough gaps that it is still up for discussion when it is over.    You really cannot complain too much either way because the book flies by at such a fast clip.

Did I mention her friends, admittedly hard to keep track of since yet again I am coming in late, range from thin as cardboard to egg cartons, the egg cartons being her two lovers, Eli and Victorian who actually get to have scenes with Riley that last more than a page and involve some scenery?
