The world of whales and dolphins is explored in this question-and-answers book that addresses such questions as "How long can whales stay underwater?" and "Can dolphins save humans?" Simultaneous.
This is a question and answer style book. I found it very interesting and not at all boring! This is an informational text that highlights many different things and questions we all might have about whales. The book is a bout 45 pages half of which are pictures. The pictures are very beautiful, but they are illustrations and not actual pictures of the whales being discussed. I would have enjoyed seeing actual pictures of the whales rather than illustrations. The title Do Whales Have Belly Buttons? really is what drew me to the book in the first place. What a cute title! I enjoyed the style of writing and the format of the book.
I think this is definitely a book I could see myself having in my classroom set. I think students will enjoy reading the book or sharing it with friends. It has fun facts and interesting tidbits to have conversations about. I think as far as a read aloud book I would probably not use it, but might reference it if the students were doing a project about marine life.
Do Whales Have Belly Buttons? is written in a unique question/answer format. I love this concept for a non-fiction, information book because it is fun for the reader. The information is expressed in somewhat of a trivia format versus a dry, paragraph format that can be tedious for readers both young and old. My second graders actually took turns quizzing their classmates to see if they could get the right answer to unusual questions about these underwater mammals. They enjoyed reading the answers and descriptions as much as they enjoyed stumping their friends with the questions. I could use this book for a lesson on sea creatures or mammals. I would actually like to make a trivia game out of it since I know how well received it has been.
This question answer format is a lot of fun and I have learned some fun facts about my favorite animals. For example, blue whales have a heart the size of a small car and you can fit fifty humans on their tongue. That's awesome.
This was a very good book how ever I do wish the author had done more to make it more interesting. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
