Divided They Fell

Rate this book
Tracing the Democratic Party's dramatic shift to the left over the last thirty years and its concurrent demise, a scholar proposes that the Democrats will never be able to recapture the strength of the New Deal.

"This book briskly recounts the Democratic Party's leftward lurch during the tumultuous 1960s and the subsequent decline of liberalism as a vital force in our nation's political life." —Will Marshall, President, Progressive Policy Institute.

This is like reading a journal kept by one partner in an ugly divorce. You know who said what to whom, what mortal and everlasting wound it caused and when the next blow was struck in the most mundane and tiresome detail possible.

If all of us as Democrats were so petty or self-important, we would never deserve to win even a game of solitaire.

This author seems to be well informed about the American Left and its influence in the recent history of the Democratic Party. Reading his book created much nostalgia as I revisited the 60's and 70's with their passions, illusions, hopes and tragedies. Well and carefully done.
