É um livro leve com uma historia de amor que representa uma época reflectindo sobre alguns dos preconceitos dessa época.... no entanto é tudo muito previsível, principalmente o final!

Comprei este livro numa mini-feira do Jumbo perto do dia dos namorados. Comprei-o porque me apetecia ler um romance e porque o preço era muito em conta (8euros) nada sabia sobre o livro, apenas li a sinopse a correr e meti-o no cesto das compras.
Comecei a ler sem nenhuma expectativa e eis que dei porque mim a ver-me nas ruas que a autora descreve, era como se estivesse presente, acompanhando a jornada de Lisette. O livro conseguiu cativar-me como não estava à espera.

surpreendeu-me bastante. Este livro estava na estante sem vontade nenhuma de ser lido. Mas dei-lhe uma oportunidade e digo que é um romance encantador, com personagens fortes, determinadas. Com momentos chocantes, apaixonantes e inspiradores, Passado na época dos Irmãos Lumiere. Curiosidades cinematográficas bastante curiosas. Recomendo.

I usually really like Rosalind Laker's work, but this one seemed like it was written in a hurry to meet a deadline. The characters didn't seem nearly as well developed as usual, and maybe I just didn't find the setting and time period (the film industry in the early 20th century) as compelling as those in her earlier books. I like that her books always have a strong central female character who is proficient in a particular trade specific to the country and time period. She obviously does a lot of research on the locales, skills, and cultures profiled, and her plots are absorbing.
Instead of this book, I would recommend reading To Dance With Kings, The Venetian Mask, Circle of Pearls and The Golden Tulip.

"Razões do Coração" mostrou-se um livro surpreendente. Adorei a escrita da autora, é fluída e capaz de nos transportar para o mundo onde toda a história se desenrola.
A protagonista também foi igualmente uma boa surpresa mostrando-se uma mulher forte e determinada e ainda uma lutadora num tempo em que tudo era dificil para as mulheres. Apenas a parte final do livro ficou aquém das minhas expectativas, depois de tudo achei-a algo entediante.

Um romance com todos os ingredientes: amor, sofrimento, alegria, desilusão, amizade....
Livro de leitura rápida, que nunca perde o interesse e é passada numa altura da história interessante, que é o inicio da industria cinematográfica em que se acompanha a o começo e a evolução com os irmãos Lumière.

Wandering a bit aimlessly
It wasn't a terrible story but I just didn't feel all that compelled by it. This girl has fairly good fortune after each tragedy. Feels a bit forced. Just a little too yoyo.

Not satisfying
Ok this book was great until it abruptly ended. Like getting cold water after becoming engaged with characters. I was left feeling like 20% of the book was missing.
Read the Golden Tulip or Circle of Pearls instead

Mais um dos livros que veio cá parar a casa e que comprei num pack promocional, e que pensando hoje não teria comprado. Isto não pelo livro, mas porque considero que foi muito caro. Como agora compro os livros todos online, tudo o que passe os cinco ou seis euros já é para mim caro. Com os cerca de vinte euros que custou o pack, hoje compram-se pelo menos três livros.
Bem e este livro? Esteve dois anos na estante, agora foi lido e está no monte de livros que quero vender. Não faz o meu género de história. Ultimamente, tenho lido mais, e cada vez me identifico mais com fantasia ou romance cor-de-rosa de levar às lágrimas. O ano passado foi dedicado às leituras com vampiros, este ano já foram trolls, reinos mágicos e ainda não acabou…
Mas agora voltando ao livro. A protagonista, Lisette, é daquelas heroínas a quem tiram o tapete debaixo dos pés num momento de grande fragilidade. O seu pai morre e ela é traída pelo noivo e pela madrasta. A solução? A fuga.
O seu mundo outrora perfeito, conforto, casa maravilhosa, uma boa relação com o seu pai e madrasta, é abalado com a traição de duas pessoas que ela julgava que a amavam. Mas sucumbindo ao desejo a sua madrasta e o seu noivo mantêm uma relação que é descoberta por Lisette.
Lisette foge e conta com a ajuda de Daniel que tem um espectáculo itinerante de lanterna mágica. Tornando-se ajudante de Daniel, Lisette conhece um mundo mágico e o verdadeiro amor. No entanto decide fugir, Daniel fica inconsolável e ela passará por muitas provações que vêm comprovar a sua coragem para enfrentar a vida e afastá-la da imagem de futilidade que tínhamos inicialmente.

Decent novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was an easy, light read. Perfect for a sick day. The story is about a young girl in Paris and follows her as she loses her beloved grandmother, then her father, and then the betrayal of her fiance. A very high strung, independent spirit, she runs off with a traveling lanternist. I enjoyed this insight into the early days of "moving pictures" and I wish there had been more. Later into the novel, and not till chapter eighteen, she actually starts acting in the early movies. I feel that part of her life was rushed. The book could have been longer, giving even more insight into the beginning of the movie industry, but still a good read. There is also a nice romance mixed in, but nothing racy, as the front cover may have you believing.

I really enjoyed this book. I started reading to while waiting for my computer game to load but ended up sitting with the games paused for an hour or more before I realised I'd become absorbed in it. Then I struggled to put it down again. perfect for a rainy Saturday in my PJs!
I really liked Lisette as a character. I felt that, even though most of the novel was descriptive of the situation and surroundings rather than the characters' thoughts and feelings, there was actually a great deal more to her character than there is to heroines of other, longer books.
The course of the story was not as clear as I'd expected at first and there were certainly a number of twists in the plot that had me shouting and swearing, or welling up with tears.

Muito interessante, o percurso conturbado de Lisette desde a infância em Lyon onde convive com o nascer da 7ª arte através da amizade com a família Lumière - os primórdios do cinema desde as lanternas mágicas que mostravam slides animados pelas feiras até à 1ª exibição do cinematógrafo pelos Lumière, em Paris onde exibiram as primeiras imagens de cinema feitas em Lyon com a saída dos operários da fábrica Lumière....Lisette acaba como estrela de cinema vive uma bela mas triste história de amor, entre França e Inglaterra, uma história que promete virá a ser feliz embora termine com o rebentar da Grande Guerra de 1914-1918.

This book was not disappointing so much because of what it was but because of what it could have been. It was gifted with an inspired topic and potentially fascinating characters but read like a script, as though the author was depending upon phantom actors to add emotional depth.
Lisette suffered betrayal, heartbreak, the birth and unsanctioned adoption of an illegitimate child, reunion with her true love, wild success in her career, and a miscarriage without raising any more emotional response in me than I would feel reading an advertisement.
It is possibly as much a failure of editing as writing, but this book was a great outline of a potentially interesting book.

Há já muito tempo que não lia um romance histórico, por isso soube me bem voltar a ler um.
Este é um romance bonito e bastante calmo, sem grandes picos de acção, mas muito bom de ler.
A protagonista tem uma vida atribulada e nada fácil, desde as primeiras páginas até ao final, mas tem também um romance muito bonito.
Este livro leva nos a uma época no final do séc XIX e início do XX, em que o cinema dava os primeiros passos. Devo por isso dizer que aprendi imensa coisa que desconhecia sobre o tema, o que também foi agradável.
Não dar mais e 3 estrelas deve se ao facto de achar um livro parado na acção. Como já referi é um livro bastante calmo. Mas gostei no geral.

I had to read other reviews on this book to come to terms that the opening paragraph had nothing whatsoever to do with the closing one. Whatever tragedy she was facing on the opening page as an adult never came to terms with how the story ended. It was as if RL had a deadline to meet and mentally added The End and shipped it off to her editors. It's too bad because her other books, the Golden Tulip, are so detailed and insightful into the time period she's writing about. Oh well, can't win them all.

October 14, 2011I expected so much more history and film-making. I've enjoyed many of Laker's other novels, but this one was just drudgery to read. The characters were so flat and the plot so contrived. That's 2 bad novels in a row for me. Time to try something new...

Laker's books are always a good, quick read. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about this book, so it must not have been one of her best.

Picked it up from the library because the cover & blurb intrigued me. Interesting story but a great deal of telling and passive voice weakens it.

Used to LOVE Rosalind Laker...maybe I've gotten more particular. The book wasn't bad--I still enjoyed the story, but i prefer to feel some emotion for/with the characters.
