Nobukuni is on the loose again, testing another pile of very dubious relationship advice from an anthropomorphic sheep of very dubious qualifications. If only she had something to offer, other than terrorizing pencils across the land…
What’s become especially clear, now that we’re two volumes in, is that any given volume is likely to rise and fall based on how cruel it is to Nobukuni. I had my suspicions last volume, but this one pretty much confirmed them.
There is, I have to say, a brilliant meta-joke baked into this series: Sasaki obviously likes Nobukuni right now, exactly as she is, without any outside interference. This entire manga does not need to exist at all, based on the premise, but it does anyway. That’s pretty funny in and of itself.
And, hey, as messages go, just be yourself isn’t the worst in the world. The most legitimately sweet chapter in this volume comes down to the two would-be lovebirds excising all the noise and just chatting. It’s really cute and feels believable in a way the story typically doesn’t.
This also gets used to good effect in another chapter when Nobukuni decides to go full gyaru because she makes some erroneous assumptions about Sasaki’s first crush. This one’s a little ridiculous, but the way Sasaki’s friend Yamamoto defuses the entire thing is great. Extra credit for not dancing around the fact that this first crush was almost certainly Nobukuni.
The best chapter, by far, introduces Nobukuni’s friend Ema, who’s just as awkward as our heroine, but infinitely more cynical as well. Ema attempts to help Nobukuni work on her dating game by roleplaying as Sasaki. Ema, however, makes for a brutal Sasaki and Nobukuni takes her roleplay way too seriously. There are some absolute howlers in this one once it gets going.
I do feel like this instalment is overall a little meaner to Nobukuni than the first volume was. Even excusing her best friend, Airi has a mouth so loud it could drown out a jet takeoff, it feels like the mishaps are a bit crueler and the mocking is a touch sharper than it should be.
It doesn’t help that Nobukuni goes from merely incredibly hapless to outright brain dead at points - the last couple chapters have a whole squadron of imaginary sheep show up and, rather than be charming, this portrayal feels closer to Nobukuni having a breakdown. It’s way, way too awkward across the board.
Ironically, this story’s at its best when it eschews the fanservice that it likes to dollop on top of things. The chapter about mystique starts funny and keeps getting funnier as a close encounter outside turns into a very close encounter at the window. It has not a lick of anything untoward, minus threatening to break the necks of every male in class.
I won’t say that there isn’t any payoff to said fanservice, mind you. The first story looks like another excuse for Nobukuni’s shirt to pop open, and it is, but by the end it’s come around to really hoist Sasaki by his own inaction in a very, very amusing way (Nobukuni’s face game is another secret weapon in this manga). The gyaru section involves a panty flash that ends up hitting Airi with splash damage that was also great.
It’s just so, so uneven. It might simply be my dislike of the whole sheep/pencil chapter, since on reflection there was a lot of good material here. Whereas the first volume was some low with a ton of good, I feel it’s inversed itself here somewhat. I certainly don’t think the plot has run out of juice, this is one premise that could sustain itself for volumes given how inept our leads are, but it needs to sharpen itself a touch.
3.5 stars - really on a bubble this time, but my annoyances are going to round this down. There’s a lot to like here, truly, but some stuff really got stuck in my craw. Just like Nobukuni herself, I want this to do what it’s best at, not what it thinks it needs to do to be popular.

I like that this volume showed a bit more of Nobukuni with her friends, especially her childhood friend: Airi. I like their quirky dynamic together. I also really like that this volume solidified the fact that Sasaki does in fact have a crush on Nobukuni, he’s just very awkward/cautious about it. I also really liked the last chapter of this volume since it introduced Sasaki’s elder sister, so I’m curious to see more of her in the next volume or so.

better than the first volume
Cute and awkward is the best way to describe this series. I'm still not 100% in love with the characters, but there are some truly laugh-out-loud moments. I'll be picking up volume 3.

So cute!
It's so cute watching two shy people being shy, yet trying to connect. Life in high-school is always fraught with social challenges.

Some very cute moments, and those last two chapters seem to be adding something more to the current dynamic. It could just be a one-off or setting more.
