"Jack Hild" is a pseudonym shared by multiple authors ghostwriting the Soldiers of Barrabas (SOBs) series of action-adventure novels. The most prolific of these authors were Robin Hardy and Alan Philipson.
Despite Hild's output being the work of several authors, the novelist Warren Murphy provided a cover endorsement saying "Jack Hild is simply the best and gutsiest action writer around today."
In backmatter to some of the SOBs books, the publishers Gold Eagle jokingly stated Hild's "whereabouts are unknown. No one associated with Gold Eagle Books has ever seen Jack, in person or in a photograph... If you should ever meet Jack Hild... let us know."
The S.O.B.s are in Central Africa as a backup team for another group of mercenaries. That group don't want the S.O.B.s there anyway. They get cut down while Barrabas and his team get away unscathed.
This might be a spoiler alert, so take it as you will. Fast forward and Barrabas is in Greece with his girlfriend when a call comes through from the only female in his group. She asks for help. He goes to see what he can do and finds that it's not his soldier who called, but someone else. That someone is out to kill the whole S.O.B. team. This isn't Agatha Christie, so you can kind of guess who's in on it.
This series is hit or miss without Robin Hardy at the helm. This time out we get a great story of cat and mouse with a side of revenge.
