THE ROOSTER STRUTS . . . the bear shuffles . . . the worm wiggles . . . and the eagle soars! Recently unearthed in the Golden Books archives—and one of Richard Scarry’s most breathtaking books—it is the perfect first book about animals with its bold color, simple lines, and sturdy pages.
RICHARD SCARRY is one of the world's best-loved children's authors EVER! In his extraordinary career, Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. Richard Scarry was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators in 2012.
A wonderful book, such beautiful, colourful illustrations! I love the way the artwork fills the page. Different animals and birds and the way they move. I'm sure this would be a favourite with a small animal loving child.
Wonderful. This is the kind of book that is more of an experience than a story. Tiny infants love it (see the other reviews!) and I could easily have survived reading it a few hundred times. And of course eventually the child will have it memorized, and then be able to use it as a tool to learn to read. (Think of the fly/flies pattern, for example, or the double letters in waddle, waggle, and wriggle...).
I read it on openlibrary.org. I hope the broken page spread is an artifact of the scanning process and that the original board book opens properly in line. Be careful if you want to buy a copy. --- LFL find. Reread, confirmed that the newer edition (blue background, including two chicks) is well-designed.
Nice simple baby book. My four-year-old didn't appreciate it; I guess he was too old for it. At the end of every page, he insisted, "I know! I already know that!" But I enjoyed Scarry's illustrations, as always.
I love Richard Scarry, and this has to be one of his best as far as art is concerned. Gorgeous colours and lively animals. There will be many many Richard Scarry books on Squirt's TBR list.
Not only does this book amaze my 5 month old daughter but I find myself lost in the delightful art work. She will smile at and anticipate the turn of each page. Her favorite picture right now is of the frogs - the fish come in a close second. Any book that makes my baby happy, makes me happy.
I have to admit that I'm in the minority and don't like a lot of Richard Scarry's books. This one has some really pretty illustrations, not too many words (mainly lots of good verbs to add to her vocabulary), and my toddler loves it. I've read it roughly 12,457 times and still like it, and isn't that the highest recommendation?
Richard Scarry is always good. Always. The illustrations are lovely--that fish page!--and the text simple and direct. While Rowan is certainly getting into longer and more complex books, this basic intro to animals and actions remains great fun. He's never not here for it.
One of the first books our baby seemed fascinated by, at 2 months. And it's still a hit 5 months later, especially if you add a bunch of sound effects. A winner!
I liked the illustrations and the babies were definitely staring at it (or trying to grab it from my hands), but the text itself was a bit stale and repetitive, without any real rhythm to it. Not my favorite animal book.
I love Richard Scarry books and I read so many when I was growing up. I was happy to read this book recently with my son. He thought the book was a blast too!
