Pine Hollow #5

Four Weddings and a Puppy

Rate this book
When two childhood friends return home after their sports careers don't go as planned, a puppy just may give them a second chance at happiness together in this uplifting rom-com, perfect read for fans of Abby Jimenez and Jenny Hale. When her Olympic downhill dreams were crushed by an injury, Kendall Walsh retreated back to Pine Hollow to help her parents run the local ski resort—and watched from a distance as her childhood best friend took the winter sports world by storm. Now nearly a decade later, Brody James has suddenly retired and returned to Pine Hollow for his sister’s wedding, but he isn’t the same carefree daredevil Kendall remembers (and had a secret crush on as a teen).  Haunted by the recent death of his fiercest rival, and struggling to find his footing in a life after sports, Brody finds himself trailing after Kendall at the resort as eagerly as her golden retriever puppy. Kendall had promised herself she wasn’t going to bother with any romantic nonsense until she’d found her feet in her new role as the ski resort’s events coordinator, but Brody James has always been her kryptonite and maybe they both need to remember how to be a little more daring…

Four Weddings and a Puppy by Lizzie Shane
Pine Hollow series #5. Contemporary romance. Can be read as a stand-alone. It takes place after book 4 and that couple is one of the weddings in this story. Friends to lovers troupe and Grumpy sunshine troupes.
Kendall Walsh is a wedding planner at her family’s struggling ski resort. The job isn’t her first choice of a career, but she’ll do her utmost to keep the resort running. She feels she owes her father for all the medical bills that were paid when her Olympic dreams came to a crashing halt. Having her rambunctious retriever doing everything he can to get to a wedding cake is a disaster in the making. Surprisingly, her childhood friend Brody comes to the rescue, catching the dog and saving the wedding. Kendall doesn’t know why he’s back in town when he should be competing somewhere. When he decides to stick around and help manage the resort, Kendall doesn’t know what’s going on, but it’s nice to have her friend back. Even if he seems to have walked away from his Olympic track career.

A multi-layered romance with chuckle worthy banter, a joyous puppy getting into everything, and underlying mental health issues for both hero and heroine. Her grumpiness is a bit humorous which is exactly how Brody looks at it. His laughing at her grumpiness and still being her friend, plus washboard abs makes Brody irresistible.
I enjoyed the surface flirting but really appreciated when Brody gave her the truth and when Kendall finally took a stand.
I’m enchanted and will have to go back and pick up the prior four books in the series.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

Olympic skier Brody James and wedding planner Kendall Walsh are the main characters of Lizzie Shane's brother’s best friend romance Four Weddings and a Puppy.

Banner, the golden retriever, carried the whole book. He was the sweetest thing ever, and he would do the most ridiculous things.

The things, though, that bothered me were the way Brody constantly referred to Kendall as his family and the way he would say, "It's my honorably, brotherly instincts," whenever he felt jealous of Kendall going out.

I kept looking for the chemistry and the romance, but I never felt it. I knew the main characters were getting serious and involved in what they called "romance," but I didn't feel any passion in them.

It should be concerning that, upon finishing the novel, I was still unclear about whether Brody and Kendall were friends with benefits or had been dating the entire time. This confusion was made worse by the author's lack to provide clarity on a number of other issues.

Thanks to Forever for the eARC.
I absolutely adore Shane's Pine Hollow dog books, and this is no exception. I just love the characters, romance, and puppy she creates for each book. Kendall was such a strong character that I found to be relatable when it came to relying on yourself and having complex familial relationships. I also really liked Brody. He was such a great balance to Kendall and added much needed lightness at times. I will add, the truth or dare in this book was so much fun. And Banner. Oh, Banner. This sweet pup was full of orneriness that added much appreciated humor to the story. These stories are always perfectly balanced, and I can't wait for the next one.

Kendall looks over just as she sees the puppy she’s fostering almost plow into an elaborate five-tiered wedding cake. With the blink of an eye the puppy is caught and the cake is saved. Kendall is shocked to learn that none other than her childhood friend Brody, saved the day. Back home and taking a break from training for the Olympics, Brody is excited to see Kendall again. He makes her feel all kinds of things, but he’s her brothers best friend and he reminds her she failed at her Olympic dreams. While both Kendall and Brody are trying to figure out their lives, they start to wonder if they’re exactly where they are meant to be – with each other.

This was a sweet, hallmark type romance that featured skiing. I did however, begin to struggle with this one about the 30% mark and continued to struggle with paying attention. I just lost interest in the story and what was going on, because not much was happening. I loved Brody as a character, but didn’t really care for Kendall. Brody was working hard to find out what to do with his life and really working on growing. Now Banner on the other hand stole the show. What cute, rambunctious puppy wouldn’t. He was simple the best character of the book and I loved him so much.

If you are looking for a light and fluffy book featuring an amazingly cute puppy, then I recommend you check this one out.

This was a fast and heartfelt read! I went in expecting angst and romance and yes it did deliver on those counts, but there were also a lot of vulnerable discussions surrounding sports and injuries and mental health which I loved.

Also, the dog!!! 😭 Cutest <3

TWs - suicide of a character in the past, ski injuries (also injuries severe enough to halt a skiing career)

3.5⭐️

This was a super cute, feel good romance story. I felt it was really easy to get into, and you get attached to our fmc, Kendall very quickly. Kendall is an ex-skier that had to end her career early due to an injury and now she is trying to figure herself and her life out working at her father's ski resort. Now comes along her brother's best friend and her childhood friend Brody. Current Olympic skier that out of the blue comes back home with no answers as to why he is there and why he isn't out competing. So together, Kendall and Brody are working at the resort and working on fixing it up to start attracting wedding goers.

One thing that I really loved that the author did, is that at no point in time was there any animosity between Kendall and Brody due to him being able to live out her dream with his ski career. I think because the relationship was more supportive, it led to a really authentic friendship and romance story. This is definitely a childhood friends to estranged to friends again to lovers lol. I would have to say i had two favorite things in this story. One was the support, trust, and communication between Kendall and Brody. It made this story feel real, and in my eyes those 3 things are foundational in a relationship. The communication in this book led to a lot of big character growth moments, especially because in this book these two are trying to figure out who they are and where they want to go in life. and two was our puppy, Banner! It added a lot of funny moments throughout the story, and my dog mom tendencies will always love a good pup in any book.

Kendall Walsh was on track to be an Olympic skier when she had a life altering accident at 17. She has spent six years working at her family’s ski resort doing everything from event coordinator to manager with little to no recognition from her father. Brody James is an Olympic skier. He was her brother’s best friend growing up and her teen crush. They meet again when he attends his cousin's wedding at the resort. Officially he is taking a break because of his knee but mostly he wants a mental break and to be with family and friends. Sparks fly between the two when he agrees to work at the resort for a short time. They are working to restore the old lodge which will be the wedding venue for his sister.

This is the fifth in the Pine Hollow series but can be read as a stand alone. I’ve read the entire series and the first three books were about one friend group (guys who play poker together). Then a side three women friend group was added for the next set. The couple from #4 (Pride & Puppies Nov 2022) is one of the weddings in this book. All the books share being in Pine Hollow and having a dog as part of the set up. Some of the books are kissing only and others like this one are closed door for intimacy.

I liked Kendall and Brody. The playfulness with one another and indulging in truth or dare games is fun. And I like that Brody shares his feelings first. Kendall’s friend group of Charlotte and Magda add to the storyline. I was less thrilled with how the story resolves the situation with her father. It wasn’t enough for me considering the years she spent looking for his recognition. I am looking forward to Magda’s story next.

Kendall has been working at her family's ski resort for the past five years since her Olympic dreams were shattered. She has been stagnant and isn't even sure what she wants to do with her life. She is forced to face the past when her former best friend and current Olympic hopeful, Brody, shows up at the resort for a cousin's wedding. Brody needs some time away from skiing and the pressure to always "be on". He offers to help with the resort and renovate an event space that his sister wants for her wedding. Both work together, sharing some of their deepest secrets. As they begin to trust each other they both must explore what their life will look like in the future. Add a cute, but demon-like puppy and this book is sure to please everyone!

This was a cute Hallmark type of romance with small-town love and an in-trouble ski resort. Add in Banner, the mischievous golden, and there are sure to be lots of laughs. For a cute and sweet book, some serious issues are discussed. The banter between Brody and Kendall is top-notch and I loved watching them get to know each other again.

If you are looking for a light, cute book featuring a trouble-making pup, this book is for you! Thank you to NetGalley and Forever Publishing for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% mine.

This book is as sweet as the cover looks. It’s a fast and heartfelt read with a surprisingly good amount of angst and romance. And it even has an adorable dog! I enjoyed the childhood friends who reconnected later in life. Having a character that has a built in familiarity really added to the angst of the romance between Kendall and Brody and made their story so much sweeter.

I loved how there was depth to this story that goes past the cute cover, but it doesn’t get too deep where it overtakes the whole story. Overall this is a heartwarming read with relatable characters and of course a loveable puppy! Thank you to NetGalley and Forever Pub for the ARC

This is a well written friends to lovers, second chance romance.
Kendall is a former champion ski racer whose only goal was to get to the Olympics, but she crashed at the trials and had to retire. She now runs her parent’s Vermont ski resort out of obligation because her dad spent so much on her recovery.

Brody is a model handsome ski racer, he and Kendall have been friends and competitors since they were kids. He’s an Olympic medalist at the top of his game, but a fellow racer recently died and it affected Brody. He leaves a World Cup race and impulsively retires. Back in Vermont, he gets a job at the resort and looks forward to seeing his first love, Kendall.

Kendall is sure that weddings will bring in more money, even as her dog almost destroys a wedding, but her dad isn’t convinced until Brody agrees. While remodeling the old ski lodge, they get closer and closer and the unresolved feelings they had as teenagers come back.

I liked the honest discussions of the pressure to succeed and meet parental and other expectations, while competing in a sport where injuries are likely.
I didn’t realize that this book was part of a series (Pine Hollow) so I’ll be reading the other books now! 4.5 stars.

Kendall is trying to save her family's struggling ski resort by hosting weddings. But when her menace foster dog threatens to ruin the cake, Olympic skier and former friend Brody James saves the day.

This is a charming small town romance that has great chemistry and a mischievous dog, but also complicated family relationships and mental health representation. Kendall and Brody are both forced to take a look at their lives and see if they are truly happy with where they are. Kendall has committed her life to her family resort after a career-ending ski accident and Brody is taking a break from the pressure and singular focus of his ski career. Through some resort renovations and hot tub truth or dare sessions, they get reacquainted from childhood and open up about their respective challenges.

It's a heartwarming read with relatable characters and some depth, and generally great for Hallmark movie fans. While it's part of an overall Pine Hollow series, it can easily be read as standalone. Thank you Forever and NetGalley for my advance copy -- pick this up when it hits shelves November 21 for a cozy winter read!

Kendall Walsh is working at her family's ski resort. She's trying new ways to bring in money and one of those is weddings. She's now a wedding planner. She's hoping this wedding will be perfect to help keep the resort in the black. Her foster dog Banner is trouble and he breaks into the wedding and takes off after the cake. An Olympian super hero Brody James catches Banner. Kendall is embarrassed because she's had a huge crush on Brody her whole life.

Brody has walked away from ski racing and has come home to Pine Hollow to figure things out. He decides to help Kendall at the resort and it may help him find happiness.

This was a fun winter sports romance. I wasn't sure what kind of romance I was getting into from the cover. But I was pleasantly surprised by it all. I laughed out loud numerous times. I'm excited to see what happens with Kendall's friend Magda in the next novel in the series.

This is a friends to lovers trope and brothers best friend trope. Kendall and Brody grew up racing each other down mountains and planning for the Olympics. An injury changes Kendall's life, but Brody goes on pursuing his dream. But now he's back on their mountain and doesn't seem in any hurry to get back to racing. What's really going on with him? And why is Kendall staying working for her father when doing so makes her so unhappy?

I have loved the other books in this series and suspected that I would love this one--and I did! It actually surprised me with some of the more serious subjects of the mental health challenges of professional athletes and also feeling as if you have failed someone you love,

There are also plenty of light funny and romantic scenes in the book. I think Shane did a great job in balancing the heavy and the light issues. Kendall's foster dog (she says she's not keeping him) adds a lot of the humor. He's a lot of puppy with a little crazed with a penchant for eating cell phones thrown in.

Absolutely loved Kendall and Brody! 😍
They both had issues with figuring out their future and Kendall also had issues letting go of the past, but they both really did their best with what was right in front of them.
Even at her lowest, Kendall never really took it out on others, even if she had valid reasons to. Kendall was a hard worker, loyal to her friends, to her family and kept all her worries bottled up.
Brody was a big sharer either but he was still always ready with a smile and "can do" attitude. He wanted to help everyone, especially Kendall while he figured out his own things.
Neither of them pressured the other too much and were honest once they admitted feelings. They would challenge each other to be better and it warmed me how much Brody defended and praised Kendall!
Bonus, more pets and fun side character interactions haha
This has been by far my favorite in the series!

I picked this up kind of on a whim, because the book features a puppy. I hadn't realized this was part of a series, which I regret, because I usually prefer to work through series in release order. I guess based on this I didn't have the highest expectations, but I ended up enjoying this so much! I really liked the writing, the setting, and the characters. I might have to read the rest of the Pine Hollow series now, starting with the Christmas one, as I love Christmas romances!

Thanks to the publisher, via Edelweiss, for an advance e-galley for honest review.

I always enjoy a trip back to Pine Hollow with Lizzie Shane's books, and the whole crew is back together in this one, focusing on Kendall, a former professional skier now working at her family's resort, and Brody, an Olympic skier and high school crush of Kendall's who has landed back in town. Charming characters and community, a delightful puppy, and lots of HEAs.

this book was very cute!! I loved that the four weddings were used as plot points to move along the story. So far, this is the book in the series that is least focused on the dog, it’s more of just an extra detail. I also would say you could easily read this book without reading the ones before, because it felt more stand alone.

This book sounded so adorable with the wedding and puppies aspect, however, I had no interest in continuing this story. It was fun for the time being, but I have too many books to get to… I loved the cover, but I wasn’t aware this was part of an interconnected (maybe?!) series.

The story felt way “too sweet” which wasn’t a bad thing, it just wasn’t what I was in the mood for. I never felt like I cared enough to finish the book.

I’m sad this one didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, I’m sure it’s an incredible story… I just wasn’t feeling it at the time so I had to DNF.

Thank you so much NetGalley and Forever for the review copy in exchange for my honest review!

Started this book with very little expectations; not something I would typically pick up. It ended up being very cute. Just enough romance, moved with some sports and a precious golden retriever. I would label this book a bit Hallmark-Ish. It's heartfelt, give it a try.

I enjoyed the way the two main characters supported each other and fought for one another outside of a sexual relationship, and of course Banner the pup was amazing. I could have used a bit more romance and less repetition surrounding the father/daughter relationship and sports themes.
