Star Scavengers #1-5

Star Scavenger: The Complete Series Books 1-5

Rate this book
Firefly meets Indiana Jones in this epic sci-fi action-adventure with a unique alien-invasion twist. Now available as a complete 5-book boxed set.
From book one:
Hudson Powell had always been a drifter, but after his father died, he vowed to turn his life around. He quit freelancing as a starship pilot and joined the Relic Guardian Force as a 38-year-old rookie.

That was a big mistake.

The RGF police the alien wrecks that have been found on every portal world discovered in the last century. They make sure the relic hunters pay taxes on the priceless alien tech they scavenge from the hulks. The snag is that the RGF is corrupt. And Hudson’s training officer Logan Griff is the worst scumbag of the lot.

Pushed over the edge, Hudson stumbles upon the exhilarating world of the relic hunters and meets the equally intoxicating and deadly mercenary Tory Bellona.

Cast out from the RGF, Hudson Powell chooses a new path. But the discovery of a unique alien crystal will set events in motion that cannot be undone. People stopped asking where the alien hulks had come from. People stopped asking who created the portals, and why.

Hudson will discover that some alien relics are best left buried. One decision can change the course of an entire civilization. One discovery can change your life.

“Hope was not enough to save the Corporeals then, and it will not be enough to save us now.”
“Hope can be powerful; Hope matters.”
“It wasn’t a job or an achievement that was important, but who he was with.”
What a fun ride, a rollercoaster indeed! I’m sad it has to end. It had me wanting for more. The flow of the book is excellent. The story itself is dark and tremendous, but the author does a fantastic job of keeping it light with humour and levity. The characters grew on me, and got hold of my heart, even the villains, as bad and evil as they were, had a comical side with them. This series was like watching great films like Batman, Superman, it read like a comic also, so full of adventures and misadventures. Action filled, dramatic scenes with a doom like end of the galaxy feeling..many unsuspecting and twisted events that kept me at the edge of my seat.
Ogden has woven an imaginative story, a wild journey through portals into earth live planets, leftovers of an ancient, who once possessed high technology. Unexpected collisions, surprising new tech introduced, this has been a fantastic wild persecution, with fast paced scenarios, tension full battles, and gripping storyline. Gathering forces, and making new allies has been difficult to confront the ultimate war with the most destructive enemy humankind has ever encountered: Goliath.
From beginning to end, it has been a wild, fun, daunting, exciting and thrilling experience, an apotheosis.
The end is suspicious, to say the least! Lol. I highly recommend it!

I finished book one, Guardian Outcast, but will not read the other four. The author had a great idea, but needed a development editor to produce a good book. The dialogue tags were distracting and tiresome. ("Sorry," he said apologetically.) The random point of view switch in Chapter 23 was pointless. The motivation for the MC's quest wasn't convincing. A little more character development was definitely needed. In fact all of the secondary characters came off as flat and showed up too conveniently to help the MC out of a jam. There was also a lot of telling instead of showing (AKA info dumps). I give this four stars with reluctance because the bones of the story are good, but the building needs to be renovated.

Space opera with flair!

Likable and entertaining characters with a well-developed story that continues to surprise with its imaginative twists and turns. A great read!

A fun sci-fi series set in a unique world

The Star Scavenger Series has a lot going for it. The world-building in the series was excellent, and the overall story was interesting and unique. I enjoyed the entire idea of relic hunting in the wrecks of ancient alien ships and how this was tied into both the political structures of the various government factions and the plot that ran throughout the series. I know it's not a unique concept, but once you read the series, you'll see how well it was all thought out and woven together.

Though the story setting and the plot were well done, the characters felt like they were built around tropes, and the overall growth and direction of the narrative were reasonably predictable. Hudson Powell is an average guy with a chronic hero syndrome who pairs himself with the engineer who happens to be a gratuitous ninja. Other supporting characters fill different trope roles, and the antagonists are just pretty much your typical scoundrels that never learn from their defeats. The narrative starts in the first book with Hudson battling a hostile work environment and dirty co-workers -- and then it takes the typical evolution through the series until the fate of the entire human race is left in the hands of Hudson Powell and his band of unlikely, but clichéd heroes. I liked the series, but the characters never really developed, grew, or deviated from their stereotypes -- and that made much of the book predictable. The consistency of the actions of the characters could be downright irritating at times.

I also wanted to point out that I've read other reviews that bashed the "science" in the series. I'm afraid I have to disagree with the critique. For example, the alien relics tended to work without explanation; however, I think this was the point and believe it was done well. The science from the alien wrecks was advanced to the point of almost being magical -- like how a cave dweller would view an airplane. The alien technology was just that much beyond the earth's technological level that things did seem to "just work" rather than being explained.

So, all that being said, would I read another book in the series? It's likely. Everything other than the trope characters and predictable nature of the series was solid, and I did have fun reading them. Ogden has talent as a writer and knows how to tell and structure a great sci-fi story. Would I read another book placed in the same universe but with a different (and less stereotyped) cast of characters? Definitely.

In the audiobook version, the narration was decently done. Doug Tisdale Jr. had a way of characterizing the villains of the series that certainly made them memorable. All the characters had a unique voice, and I think the narrator captured their personalities, but he had a lot of trouble with some of the female characters. Of course, that's a common problem among male narrators, so I'm not going to hold too much against Tisdale for it.

Special thanks to G. J. Ogden, who provided me with this book at my request.

If this was YA I would score it a little better. The writing is lazy and uninspired. The MC is a 40 year old veteran starship pilot. He has traveled all over the galaxy and has visited some of the roughest scavenger worlds. He is also as naive as a fresh faced teen on his first jump. Like if Han Solo acted like Luke. He joins a law enforcement group hoping to make a difference because of his dead parents, but is crestfallen to find out it's corrupt. Literally everyone else knows how corrupt it is. Even his friend/acquaintance that runs his go to bar on the world he is stationed on and that he has visited in the past seems surprised that he joined such a corrupt group. Generic alley way rescue ensues and the damsel is defending herself with a copper pipe.....on an alien world at the edge of the galaxy. I don't think I've seen a copper pipe big enough on this world to use as a weapon. This is all in the first 15 mins of reading the first book. A 16 year old kid that grew up in a semi rough part of town would have more life experience than this character seems to have.

Hudson Powell is on a quest to find something worth giving his life too. He begins as an RGF officer, thinking that policing the galaxy is a noble profession, only to discover that RGF cops are more corrupt than he would have believed. Then he becomes a relic hunter, something akin to a space pirate, a finder and trader in valuable artifacts. It is in this profession that he befriends a young woman who will become part of his crew, and meets many more interesting characters, some who are out to get him and others who will become as close as family. He also discovers a plot by alien space vessels to destroy earth and all humanity. Does he find his life's purpose? Absolutely. And it's nothing like he would have ever expected.

I received a free audiobook from the author and have reviewed it willingly. The narration was fabulous and I look forward to hearing more by Doug Tisdale Jr as well as reading additional books by GJ Ogden.

Hudson wants to make his parents proud. "It doesn't matter what it is, just make sure it matters to you, ok?" his dad tells him. So at 38 he embarks on a new career that he thinks matters - only to learn it is nothing like he envisioned. Thus starts a fast-paced, action-filled, alcohol-fueled story that never quite goes the way you thought it would. Definitely a page turner. Ogden has created a space opera universe reminiscent of something you might get if you threw Mike Resnick's Santiago characters into David Weber's Mutineer's Moon universe.

Old-school space opera that is just plain fun to read! Good guys you want to root for, bad guys who are really despicable, an enigmatic alien AI trying to understand humanity, and spunky kids doing their best to save life as we know it. Hudson's drive to do something that matters has put him in the center of an unlikely team that is fast becoming family. Familiar elements are used in a way that is comfortable, but not always predictable. Luck continues to play a large part in this story - but it is not always on the good guy's side! As they say, fortune is a fickle mistress.

In the end, success is dependent on hard earned skills and every member of the team giving their best - and in some cases their all. With so many ways for things to go horribly wrong and only a tiny chance of success if EVERYTHING comes together just right, this is a nail-biting, edge of your seat adventure you won't want to put down!

Action-packed space opera on steroids. All in all great stuff, thoroughly enjoyed it. The world building was spot on- exactly the right amount of detail, so the reader can fully picture the portal worlds and alien ships without being overloaded.
Characterisation was also spectacular. Each character was fully fleshed out and developed, with all their personality nuances described amazingly.

The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars was the sometimes “clunky” dialogue. At times (especially in heated situations), the characters were having fully fledged chats about fairly irrelevant things. If you’re on the verge of death and seconds away from being shot, maybe not the best time to catch up on life, is it? It felt like the most action-packed moments were “diluted” with silly, long dialogues, which personally for me made it a bit difficult to stay immersed.

The other personal gripe I had was the predictability of some “plot twists”. Without spoiling it, Hudson and Griff are mortal enemies. And yet every time they bump into eachother, the situation develops in exactly the same, predictable way. An actual shocking, gut-wrenching twist would’ve been nice. But that’s a personal opinion not worth of downgrading my overall rating!

What we need is a complete crystal

Good adventure. Keeps you riveted for the next situation. Humanity discovers a bunch of stargates, and discovers that each stargate leads to an earth like planet that is virgin except for a big honking starship that has crashed. Scavengers explore these crash site to discover alien tech. So we meet up with a scavenger and follow his peregrinations as he meets up with interesting people with whom he barters, competes, allies, and combats. All this leading to a revelation of why each earth like world has a crashed megaship. Something dangerous is this way coming. Mr Ogden has no limit in the variety of tense situations he can put his characters into, but all escapes are logical although sometimes they're lucky or quirky. Keep your eyes open for the nanoliver. Those little pills are neat.

The basic concept behind the story is good, and it was an enjoyable read. The characters are nice but largely one-dimensional. To try to create lots of tension, the author makes events "action packed", but the timing is unrealistically fast. Things that supposedly take minutes could not happen that fast. When there is serous danger the characters get into fairly long discussions that do not fit with the events taking place. It makes no sense that the mail character should be a pacifist who only punches the bad guys in the face or chest when the bad guys have weapons that should be used to kill the hero or compatriots. It also is crazy that the hero is spending days in space ships with two different young and attractive women without any sex going on.

Got a copy of the complete series via Amazon Prime.

Book #1
A bit predictable. Establishing this universe and our protagonists. I was hoping for a bit more. I have yet to be hooked. I am at a quandary about continuing this series. I will likely have to give the next book a try before deciding.

Book #2
Okay, story segments are separated into books. Really need to read this series as a whole, so "book" should be considered to be an episode. Overall, this series is reading more like a grade B TV series (from the 80/90's). I was hoping for something more sophisticated. Our heroes are just too "TV" high minded, ethical and our villains too bloodless sadistic. A lot of corruption in this society. Moving onto the next segment.

Book #3
I thought this storyline would move a bit faster. The impending alien invasion portion is still a few books away. I almost gave up on finishing this book at the half way point, but pushed on to complete book #3. Not sure what my plan is at this point.

Book #4
Decided to start #4. More of the same. Now we are finally getting to the alien attack. But alas, I am not a big fan of total destruction on a planetary scale in an instant. No backstory on those secondary planets. No sense of loss. Just no way to survive if you are left behind. I have also grown weary of our greedy villains and the sudden leap in abilities by our heroes with the new alien technology. I did complete book #4, but that is it for me.

DNF at 80% read. I just no longer care how this storyline ends. But I did give it a chance.

Have a GoodReads.

Engaging Space Saga with lots of humor!

Author Ogden has given all geeky space nerds like me a really rollicking read! With a memorable cast of flawed characters with lots of attitude, redemption is at last, achieved in a BIG way... at least for most of them. One of my favorites, a rough and rugged lady bar owner that distills her own nasty spirits, is given a reprieve by the main character, a former policeman turned smuggler. These are typical of the oddball life stories that ntersect while rocketing through portals in time and space. Lots of non stop fun.

Our 'hero' is stupid, he just let's people beat him, Cheat him and try to kill him.

Griff would have died long before he got a chance to kill Ericka, he should have killed Griff while he was looking through the loot of the first ship after Griff murdered 3 people. Our 'HERO' never finishes off bad guys just let's them keep coming, I would have at least beat them bad took all of their goods to pay for the trouble they caused.
He needed to take all of their weapons too and the cloths that Calder had were bullet proof. Why not take that to protect yourself at the very least.

Overall, this is a passable “save humanity” sci-fi series with plenty of good-guys-vs-bad-guys storytelling and a fair amount of action, but the aspect preventing the series from being great is the dialogue. The exchanges between characters are so elementary and riddled with clichés that getting through all five books involved constant eye-rolling. I’m not sure what to make of this as I read the author’s Planetsider Trilogy, which was more sophisticated IMO, and very enjoyable. In any event, the Star Scavenger series is worth a read, as long as expectations aren’t high.

Without a doubt, this was one of the best series of books I have ever read... The twists and turns followed by the totally unexpected made me want to read the entire series in one sitting... It is very well written, and the story and characters are believable... I have already recommended this series to several friends, and I highly recommend it to anyone reading this review... I will be reading the next set of the series and based on the quality of writing, I'll be checking out more books by G.J. Ogden... Read it and enjoy...

Now this is a really good series for lovers of Space Adventures

It’s a bit of Star Trek, but more Battle Star GALACTICA and will keep you turning pages in anticipation. Plenty of action and adventure that hung together well over the five novels, with cohesive action between the actors in the script.
The protagonist is a bit weak… but that’s his choice. The series ends on a note that I thought was a bit … left field? Hopefully there will be a sequel.

This series isn't one that you'll necessarily remember or think back once you've finished, you know how some books stick with you like that? But it's 5 books of solid entertainment, with a strong plot and interesting characters. Is a swashbuckling tale with lots of turns and the requisite enigmatic, long-gone aliens that we know of through their relics and lots of twists and turns in the fortunes of our leads.

Less than I Expected

The preview and description for this box set were appealing and the first two or three books carried the story well enough. Unfortunately the storyline starts unraveling for me in book four and it was enough to push me out of the books altogether. I wish I had either never started the series, or had stopped at the end of book three, settling for a less-than-perfect ending.

Absolute best science fiction story I have read in years!

This is absolutely fun to read! Period! Imagine a mixture of Firefly, Star Trek and Lost in Space all rolled into one great story! I absolutely hated to reach the end of the book, but that being said, the ending was completely satisfying in every way! This would certainly be a box office hit if it were made into a big screen film. If you're A hard-core sci-fi fan, get it and get set for one hell of a ride!

Target Earth

An absolute jewel of a rag tag group that protected Earth from a GIGANTIC SENTIENT SPACE SHIP, that was totally focused on the annihilation of the entire human race and and the entire planet! The progressive beyond all odds progression of this story is a masterful in the structure of the entire series of the five books, it was very captivating, and difficult to put down ! A totally immersive read from beginning to end!!!

rough start, got better with every chapter

I loved this story… all 5 books! A compulsive read, I wanted to know what happened next…Again a story where the main characters grow into their calling to save the humans against the big bad aliens. Reluctantly, the central characters all face challenges and stay true to their skill sets and gut instincts. Believable worlds, pretty consistent characters, lots of action. I loved it!

New to scifi.

This is my first foray into scifi. I don't know what made me but this set of books, but I am glad I did.
The characters are strong and well built into the stories. The books themselves are well written and great storytelling.
No sense in giving the stories away, but it is the ultimate good versus evil and the survival of humanity.
Thank you for a very enjoyable trip overturned week.

Alien technology propels Earth into the stars - then after they get comfortable, they meet the aliens.

Hudson Powell has been a drifter almost his entire adult life. Attempting to do something “good” he joins a purportedly corrupt organization. Discovering that rumors don’t even begin to match the actual level of corruption, he stumbles into an amazing chain of events that lead to a fateful battle not only for his life, but for the lives of the entire human race.

This is one of those series that should be on your shortlist.

I’ve always enjoyed the concept of salvaging and treasure hunting and it works so well in this SciFi setting. Ogden’s characters, story and world building is really well done. There are scenes that literally put you in the cockpit fighting for survival. I even enjoyed the villain’s story and was intrigued how their story progressed.

A real page turner and I’ll be getting the follow on series.

Interesting storyline but it lacks in character development or realism. The main character's life is constantly in danger through his own pacifist decisions. He knows multiple people are after him and will kill him but acts all carefree only to be conveniently saved every time. I kept getting an Ashe and team Rocket vibe over and over again. Same situation, different day and never learning. Was able to get through 2.5 books, will not be finishing the rest.

actually i allready have finished this series. i forgot to add it to my goodreads when i first started it so adding it now when i had allready finished it. it is the first time i have finished a series of books like this. which goes to show how well the writer wrote , to make it an easy read and the story flows well so that it does not make the reader feel irritated by it and stop reading. it got me interested in it to go to the end of this 5 book series.

Wild West meets The Expanse

This series is a wild ride through space. It's captivating reading. Plenty of humor to go along with the excitement. The blending of a western style storyline and a space adventure worked well together. The cast of heroes and villains are well thought out and appropriately detailed. The action will grab your attention and make it difficult to put down.

Starts a little awkward but gets much better.

This story is kind of like an adult version of a children’s adventure. The characters are quite awkward in the beginning and I thought the story contrived. Nevertheless, the characters definitely grew on me. I wound up really enjoying the tale. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Exhilarating Adventure Series

Hudson was many things but what made him special was no matter which hat he wore, he was still one of the good guys. The Star Scavenger series is fast-paced, exciting, and has more twists and turns than a plate of spaghetti noodles. This series makes you really think about humanity with all it's vices and flaws just might be worth saving...maybe.
