In 1993, Masquerade Books published my story collection, ERIC'S BODY, under its popular imprint, Badboy Press. This volume contained 25 of the nearly 200 stories I had published in all the major gay magazines of the late 70s through the 1980s under my pen name of 'Jason Fury'. I had tried for two years to get my story collection published but at that time, mainstream publishers were very wary of taking on anything "gay" because homophobia was still rampant in publishing and my stories were considered very sensual if not "pornographic." Richard Kasak, however, the publisher of Masquerade Books, took a chance and accepted ERIC'S BODY, gave it a terrific and controversial cover and my story collection created a sensation when it hit the bookstores. I was living in Manhattan at that time and the huge Barnes&Noble store on Fifth Avenue showcased my book which sold out within hours. However, New York City's well-known gay bookstore, A Different Light, did nothing to publicize it and hid it away in its "gay porn" section at the rear of the store near the bathroom. The store's manager wanted his business to be known for only selling "literary" gay books. But ERIC'S BODY quickly sold out its first printing, then the second one and on and on. Publisher Richard Kasak phoned me and said the stores and mail orders could not keep up with the demand. It's now gone through countless editions and has sold in the tens of thousands of copies over the decades. I've received mail and email from all over the world about the stories. I'm proud of this "little" book that's survived over the years. A note: the same year that saw the publication of ERIC'S BODY also saw the publication of THE ROPE ABOVE, THE BED BELOW, also written under my pen name of Jason Fury, and it too has been selling steadily over the decades. Both books have celebrated their 25th anniversary in new editions by Open Road Media. My thanks to all of my fans who have written to me over the years. There's more to come.
