Whether you're remodeling your house, redesigning your apartment or just looking for a book of design ideas, "Japan Home" is a beautiful and indispensable resource full of practical information, shopping resources and, of course, inspiration.Filled with light and simplicity and existing in close harmony with the natural world, Japanese interior design has long been renowned for its spare beauty, utility and grace. More and more people outside of Japan have come to appreciate its tranquil allure, and are incorporating uniquely Japanese features into their homes.
It's a rather small and succinct book that tells you the basic principle of Japanese traditional houses. You can certainly skip the text part and only read the caption of the beautiful photos for the ideas. On the other hand, the little book is a bit too short and out of focus. It could be better if the author could provide the locations of housing photographed in the book and a more organized introduction.
Japan Home: Inspirational Design Ideas offers up a lovely survey of Japanese interior (and exterior) design with everything from lamps and hearths to sliding screens and furniture.
The contrasts are so interesting -- many items are intensely geometric while others, found right next to them, have the slight imperfection that makes a different kind of beauty (and lies at the heart of the concept of wabi sabi).
It seems that a great deal of Japanese aesthetics is about exactly this — the precise next to the imperfect. It’s something that crops up again and again.
In the end Japan Home left me dreaming and wishing I could have just a few of the items in my home.
I learned some things about the Japanese aesthetic from reading the text, and enjoyed looking at all the photos, but don't see myself using any of the ideas in my own home. I can appreciate the look, but it's not one I want to live in myself.
