This is definitely a slow read and a bit hard to get into, but unlike a lot of other books about international health this book is very honest and doesn't rely on emotion and narrative to communicate its message. In a lot of ways, it's like international development work itself: doesn't follow a set path, is slow at times, but ultimately is very rewarding. Well worth the read for anyone who is interested in community health
How far from your comfort zone are you willing to move in order to achieve satisfaction in your life? Jamkhed is a community health book of a couple who take their life, love and education to the poor people of Jamkhed village in India. This couple, with empty hands and only with the power of their knowledge, manage to transfer the lives of thousands of poor people in Jamkhed and its surrounding areas by empowering women through health education and community participation.
This book is based on real life experience, hard work and dedication of Aroles. It is a recommendable read for anyone who is interested in community health services.
• Wow…don’t judge a book by it’s cover…this was so well written, with honest and detailed information about how the project was started here, and what underlies its success. o I’m inspired by the lives of these doctors, and the fact that I see the project here makes it even that much more valuable to me! o I’ve learned that I have what it takes to start a project like this…and see that potential in myself. And I learned that if I do it, I want it to be with a significant other. o Most of my learning here however, was details of how everything was done…kind of like a textbook.
Fantastic read! It is the story of how two people were inspired to live and work in the villages of India. They describe real challenges of setting up a health facility and focusing on engaging the community in preventative health. What I liked most is that Mabelle and Raj listened to community members. I highly recommend reading this book!
