"Oh dear, Bertie Wooster, it seems as if your servant is satirizing our style of living with the help of subtle irony and puns." Faints
It´s an interesting sociocultural, epigenetic study to look at how Wodehouse had to adapt his satire to a level that was still funny and a tiny little bit controversial enough to attract progressive readers, but also balanced on the razorblade sharp line of potentially falling too much towards social criticism and black sarcasm.
The evolution of language is a hilarious sociolinguistic topic, nothing better than to watch the ingroups and alphas talk in ways everyone else in the same era, and the trends before and after, deem complete self satire without recognizing. Cough. Hipsters.Cough. And close so nothing beats Middle Ages knight and king talking style, the awful German language with all its excesses and strange native speakers tending to construct completely unreadable, tapeworm long sentences, and the always welcome snobby English colonial time era talking. Just imagine how it might develop in hundreds and thousands of years with different cultures on Earth and in space, they might be close to completely unintelligible for nowadays modern speakers.
Wodehouse uses this mixture of attitude, elitism, and the underlying naivety, stupidity, ignorance, and evil behind talking like a sir, to dismantle the superficiality, bigotry, and hypocrisy of his time, owning the elite he was a part of, doing what the greatest comedians and satirists before and after him new is most important. Show the ugly beast of a degenerated society its reflection in the mirror of ridiculousness, going full frontal meta postmodernism, as already Cervantes´Don Quixote, Swifts´Gullivers´travels, ancients tales from Greece, Rome, Middle East, Asia, etc. I´ve just heard about or already forgotten, etc. did and let the creature called human social conditioning and cultural brainwashing realize what an incestuous monster it is.
The beginnings of the comedy genre have a serious, underlying topic, that tends to be forgotten in each era, too. We laugh about the strange and senseless behavior of the old generations, but completely ignore the dissonances and madnesses of our modern age, deeming the behavior of society, the whole system, but especially ourselves completely logical. Just imagine how future centuries comedians will make extremely disturbing dark comedy fun about how we blindly and complacently danced next to the volcano melting extreme social injustice with climate change and environmental destruction and how intelligent each other generation before us will seem in contrast. Because they, at least, just killed each other, but didn´t destroy everything, within not even 2 centuries from 1900 to 2100, that once made Earth a garden Eden, ironically inspired by the same sick, stupid ideologies that were born out of similar autocratic writings as the term itself.

The Inimitable Jeeves (1923) is the first full-length book completely devoted to Jeeves and Wooster (My Man Jeeves, only half Jeeves, featured the proto-Wooster Reggie Pepper), and my sense is that neither the gentleman’s gentleman, nor his gentleman, has reached perfection here. Jeeves is less Olympian, perhaps a tad too familiar with Bertie, Bingo and their betting friends, and Wooster’s narrative voice lacks that miraculous unity of brainless superficiality and incisive social observation which characterizes Woosterian narration at its finest.
In addition, the book has the disadvantage of pretending to be a novel, even though it is obviously a collection of short stories, with most of the seven stories separated into two distinct chapters. Some of the stories are too similar in plot, and the overall narrative does not increase in hilarity, as the Jeeve’s novels customarily do. All this is completely excusable in a story collection, but The Inimitable claims to be a novel.
Still it is Jeeves and Wooster, and it is funny. Jeeves disapproves of Bertie’s more colorful accessories, cousins Claude and Eustace wreak social havoc, Bingo Little falls continually (oh so inappropriately) in love, Bertie tries to help but mucks up everything, and “Aunt is calling to Aunt like mastadons bellowing across primeval swamps.”
The elements of classic Jeeves and Wooster are all here. And this book is a good beginning.

This one was a fun bunch of short stories that were interconnected.
What I mean is that Bertie & Wooster aren't in one looooong mess this time around. It's a series of smaller, somewhat connected messes? Ish.
It doesn't really matter.
What matters is that this is another funny installment with wacky favorites like Aunt Agatha, the Glossops, & Bingo Little.
Now, Wodehouse's books are like Agatha Christie's in the sense that these authors both found a formula that fucking worked and stuck with that shit.
So. Yeah. Everything I've read from the Jeeves series blends together. I couldn't honestly tell you for sure the plot of this one without maybe getting mixed up with the plot of another one.
But that's ok. <--with me
I enjoy the hell out of these for the same reason I like comfort foods. They make me feel good.
Bonus: unlike when I eat mac & cheese, reading this stuff doesn't make my ass get any flabbier.

"Now you know me, Jeeves," I said. "I am no expert on what Honoria likes to call literature."
"I believe I would concur in that judgement," Jeeves agreed, and I fancied I saw his left eyebrow twitch slightly. But I was not to be put off by the blighter's lack of enthusiasm.
"Hang it all, Jeeves!" I continued. "You don't need to be an expert to see that this book is head and shoulders above - above - well --" I paused, for some reason at a loss for a suitable comparison.
"Perhaps you are referring to the work of Miss Rosie M. Banks which you read a few months ago?" hazarded Jeeves. "Though I am not quite certain, at this remove in time, if it was Madcap Myrtle or Only a Factory Girl."
"Neither am I," I said. We Woosters are straightforward people and like to get to the point. "Never mind that. Whichever it was, I can tell you that this is veritably the bee's knees and the cat's pyjamas rolled into one. I haven't laughed so much since Bingo fell into the Serpentine while doing his impression of Lloyd George after the last Drones club dinner. It almost makes me feel there could be something to this reading lark."
"I see the book has profoundly affected you," said Jeeves. "I wonder if you would be so good as to allow me to examine it?"
I nodded, and Jeeves gave it the old once-over. After a few seconds, he shook his head sadly.
"This isn't quite playing the game!" I said indignantly. "You barely even glanced at the thing!"
"It pains me to relate," said Jeeves, "that a glance was enough. What was the title again?"
"The Inimitable Jeeves," I said, mystified.
"Quite so," replied Jeeves. "I am afraid the description is entirely inaccurate. I am all too imitable - to such an extent, in fact, that I rather fancy someone is doing precisely that, at this very moment."
I looked around, and would you credit it, Jeeves was right again. Don't ask me how, but we'd ended up in some ghastly parody homage. Deuced embarrassing if I say so myself.
"Jeeves," I said firmly, "I've learned my lesson. No more of this literature rot from now on. It's nothing a chap like me should be wasting his time on."
"A very wise decision, sir," said Jeeves. And that was that.

Aunque la novela está concebida como un todo, cada capítulo se puede considerar como un relato independiente.
En ellos, Bertie Wooster tiene algún tipo de problema bastante banal: ayudar a un amigo enamorado, evitar que su tía Agatha lo case y cosas así. En todos los casos, pide ayuda a su ayudante de cámara, Jeeves, que parece tener una clarividencia fuera de lo común.
La novela tiene toques de humor, pero me ha parecido bastante aburrida. Los capítulos son sosos, sin importancia, aunque las resoluciones de Jeeves son originales.

P. G. Wodehouse compiled and revised these previously published short stories into a semi-novelistic format in 1923. They had been released in UK and US magazines since the later years of WWI and were a big hit in both countries. The author enjoyed a long and lucrative career in this series and with his other projects ranging from Broadway musicals to Hollywood films, spanning seventy five years. The plots are narrated by Bertie Wooster, a rich and lazy twenty four year old Englishman who is clueless in all practical matters. His shrewd and capable valet Jeeves extricates him and his toff friends from their various romantic and financial fiascos. The understated humor is woven into the dialogue of the characters as seen through the eyes of Bertie, who despite his Oxford education is at odds in coping with everyday life.
Bertie’s friend Bingo wants to marry a waitress, but first he needs to mentally prepare his class conscious uncle with the help of Jeeves’ subliminal suggestion techniques. The plan works so well that the cook engaged to Jeeves calls it off in favor of Bingo’s uncle while Jeeves becomes involved with the waitress. Bertie is summoned to France by an aunt who has plans to fix him up with a parson’s sister and is nearly swindled by the pair. Back in London Bingo has fallen in love with a doctor’s daughter but Aunt Agatha is determined she should wed Bertie. Dodging Jeeves advice Bertie attempts to handle the matter and winds up engaged to an overbearing woman who tries to mold him to her requirements. Demands that he fire Jeeves are resolved when Jeeves convinces her psychiatrist father that Bertie is ripe for the lunatic asylum.
Bertie and Jeeves leave for New York to avoid the anger of Agatha who sends a theater loving cousin with instructions he be kept away from Broadway. Back in London Bingo’s uncle has become a peer and his ex-cook wife is now Lady Bittlesham. Bingo turns Bolshevik in pursuit of a red hot romance. About to be cut off from his allowance he extorts money from Lord Bittlesham, loses it all at the track and is rescued from radical politics by Jeeves. Bertie goes away on a summer vacation with his cousins Claude and Eustace who bet on sermon lengths and choirboy races, and gamblers make odds against Bingo’s chances with the vicar’s niece. The twins are exiled to South Africa but hide out in Bertie’s flat. Bertie impersonates an author to help Bingo get married and exposed leaves it to Jeeves to explain he is mentally ill.
A lot of the fun in reading these stories is Wodehouse’s use of Edwardian era slang. Terms like bally, blighter, corker, rummy, right-ho, cheerio, dashed and deuced don’t get as much airplay now, don’t you know old boy, unless you are watching movies from the 1930’s. It is entertaining to try to guess their meaning from the context but it’s meaningless gibberish as compared to the King’s English Jeeves speaks. Without reading too much into the light and diverting tales it is easy to imagine a critique of the old moneyed class, of their idleness and frivolity, while the working class looks on with bemused disdain. This doesn’t appear to be within the wheelhouse of P G Wodehouse though. There is a symbiotic relationship between Bertie and Jeeves where both seem to be satisfied with their lot and happy for its defined roles.

Back in London Bingo has fallen in love with a doctor’s daughter but Aunt Agatha is determined she should wed Bertie. Dodging Jeeves advice Bertie attempts to handle the matter and winds up engaged to an overbearing woman who tries to mold him to her requirements. Demands that he fire Jeeves are resolved when Jeeves convinces her psychiatrist father that Bertie is ripe for the lunatic asylum.
Bertie and Jeeves leave for New York to avoid the anger of Agatha who sends a theater loving cousin with instructions he be kept away from Broadway. Back in London Bingo’s uncle has become a peer and his ex-cook wife is now Lady Bittlesham. Bingo turns Bolshevik in pursuit of a red hot romance. About to be cut off from his allowance he extorts money from Lord Bittlesham, loses it all at the track and is rescued from radical politics by Jeeves. Bertie goes away on a summer vacation with his cousins Claude and Eustace who bet on sermon lengths and choirboy races, and gamblers make odds against Bingo’s chances with the vicar’s niece. The twins are exiled to South Africa but hide out in Bertie’s flat. Bertie impersonates an author to help Bingo get married and exposed leaves it to Jeeves to explain he is mentally ill.
A lot of the fun in reading these stories is Wodehouse’s use of Edwardian era slang. Terms like bally, blighter, corker, rummy, right-ho, cheerio, dashed and deuced don’t get as much airplay now, don’t you know old boy, unless you are watching movies from the 1930’s. It is entertaining to try to guess their meaning from the context but it’s meaningless gibberish as compared to the King’s English Jeeves speaks. Without reading too much into the light and diverting tales it is easy to imagine a critique of the old moneyed class, of their idleness and frivolity, while the working class looks on with bemused disdain. This doesn’t appear to be within the wheelhouse of P G Wodehouse though. There is a symbiotic relationship between Bertie and Jeeves where both seem to be satisfied with their lot and happy for its defined roles.

যে যাই বলুক, বার্টি উস্টার আমার ভীষণ পছন্দের একটা চরিত্র। দোষের মধ্যে, বার্টি একটু বোকা। ওর বোকামির বিবরণ পড়তে বরাবরই মজা লাগে। কিন্তু এইবার বেশি মজা পেয়েছি বিঙ্গো লিটলের কর্মকাণ্ডে। এহেন প্রেমিক পুরুষ হওয়া মুখের কথা না! যতোবার বেচারা নতুন করে প্রেমে পড়েছে, ততোবারই হা হা হি হি করে হেসেছি। এবার আগাথা ফুপুর কথা পড়ে কেন জানি হিমুর মাজেদা খালার কথা মনে পড়ছিলো।
আগের দুই বই পড়ার অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে ভাবলাম, জীভসের বুদ্ধির নমুনা দেখে নতুন কোরে অবাক হতে হবে না, কিন্তু জীভস বলে কথা! অনেকবারই অবাক হতে হয়েছে। শেষের অংশ পড়ে তো হাসতে হাসতে অবস্থা খারাপ। কী ছিলো এইটা!
বইটির সাবলীল, সরস ও মসৃণ অনুবাদের জন্য রাতুল খানকে অসংখ্য ধন্যবাদ। এমন বিষণ্ণ আবহাওয়ায় এই ধরনের একটা বই পড়া খুবই দরকার ছিলো আমার।

Another enjoyable and funny Jeeves and Wooster. This edition has some cracking 1920s characters among them the Bright Young Things Claude and Eustace who get into all sorts of trouble pulling Bertie into their sphere too.
Bertie's old school chum and lifelong friend, Richard P. "Bingo" Little features heavily with good supporting parts from Bingo's uncle Lord Bittlesham, and Bertie's nemesis, his aunt Agatha.
There are some very funny episodes around betting which leads to scrapes, scams and of course a need for Jeeves to come to our hero's rescue. The betting on the village fete's races and the length of the nearby vicars' sermons is simply brilliant. As always. I love the dialogue between Bertie and his friends, and others, but most of all the conversations and remarks between him and Jeeves.
As with any Jeeves and Wooster, there is some love interest, which has at its centre Bingo in this book, and his ability to quickly find heaven's angel until something goes bally wrong again and again.
Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster are to me a very comfortable and warming read that pops me into the 1920s and 30s where stuff happens but rarely does anyone come a real cropper; well unless they deserve a little gentle punishment or embarrassment. Simply, good humorous writing of characters based on their times slightly stretched for comedic value.

রোজা রেখে পুনরায় বলছি রোজা রেখে এই বই পড়তে যাবেন না।
উপরোক্ত লাইন পড়ে এখনই হা হা করে লেখক প্রকাশকসহ যারা এই বই পড়েছে তারা ছুটে এসে বলবে,
“অন্বয় শা লা র চামড়া
তুলে নেব আমরা“
স্লোগান দিতে দিতে। ও ভাই সোলোগান দিয়েন না। নাইলে আল্লাহর কাছে বিচার দিব কইলাম। আমি যাহা বলিয়াছি তাহা সত্য বৈ মিথ্যা তো কিছু নয়। অধমের বক্তব্য না শুনেই অধমের প্রাণপ্রিয় চামড়া তুলে নিয়ে যদি দেখা যায় অধম নিরপরাধ, বেচারা চামড়া কী তখন এই দুঃখ সইতে পারবে?
না, এমন সম্ভাবনা আছে বলে মনে হচ্ছে না। উল্টো চামড়া কর্তনকারী দলের লোকদের নিরপরাধ চামড়ার অভিশম্পাত খেয়ে বংশ নির্বংশ হয়ে যাওয়ার সমূহ সম্ভাবনা দেখা দিতে পারে।
চলুন নেমে পড়ি চামড়া রক্ষা করার মিশনে। দেখা যাক বক্তব্য শেষ করার পরে চামড়া স্বস্থানে বহাল তবিয়তে থাকে নাকি অত্যাচারী লেখক প্রকাশক পড়ুয়াদের অত্যাচারে পিঠ ছেড়ে মানে মানে পালিয়ে বাঁচে।
দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস, সেবা প্রকাশনীর বইয়ের ভান্ডারে নব্য সংযোজন। আমরা যারা সেবার বই পড়ে বড় হয়েছি তারা নতুন সেবার বই হাতে পেলে যেন হাতে ঈদের চাঁদ দেখতে পাওয়ার মত আনন্দিত হয়ে উঠতাম। বই শেষ না করা পর্যন্ত খাওয়া, ঘুম, শয়নে স্বপনে এমনকী ক্লাসের পড়ার ফাঁকেও এই বই নিয়েই ভাবতাম। এসব দেখে প্রেমিকারাও নির্ঘাত হিংসেয় জর্জরিত হয়ে উঠতো। যদিও মাঝের বেশ কিছু বছরে সেই আনন্দে অনেকাংশে ভাটা পড়েছে। কারণ সেবার বইয়ের মান পড়তির দিকে চলে গিয়েছিল। সে জন্য বেশ কিছু বই আমি নিজেই পড়িনি। দীর্ঘদিন পর ডিক স্যাণ্ড বইটা পড়ে খুবই মজা পেয়েছিলাম। সেদিনই দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস বইটা অর্ডার করে ফেলি। সেবার থ্যাংক ইউ জীভস, ক্যারি অন জীভস দুটোই আমার ভীষণ পছন্দ। দেখার ইচ্ছে ছিল আগের গুলোর মান রূপান্তরকারী রাতুল ভাই এই বইটাতে ধরে রাখতে পেরেছে কী না। পেরেছেন কী না সেসব মূল বক্তব্যে যাওয়ার পূর্বে ছোট্ট করে বইয়ের সারসংক্ষেপ সম্পর্কে ধারণা দেয়া যাক।
বার্টাম উস্টার। ধনীর দুলাল। তবে ধনীর দুলাল হলেও লোক ভালো আছেন। বেশ অমায়িক সহজ সরল এই ভদ্রলোক মানুষের বিপদে নিজেকে এগিয়ে দেন। বন্ধুবান্ধব থেকে চোর বাটপার কেউই তাকে ভুজুংভাজুং ভাজুং বুঝ দিয়ে খসিয়ে নিতে কসুর করে না। ভদ্রলোকের সবই ঠিক আছে কিন্তু তার খানসামার ভাষায় তার ঘটে বুদ্ধি কিছুটা কম আছে। তাকে বুদ্ধিমান তো বলাই যায় না, তিনি কোনোদিক থেকেই বুদ্ধিমান নন। একেবারেই বোকাসোকা। এহেন ধনীর দুলাল, সেই সঙ্গে সোনায় সোহাগা হিসেবে বোকাসোকা লোক যে প্রায়ই জগতের নানাবিধ জটিলতার ফাঁদে পড়ে ছেড়ে দে মা কেঁদে বাঁচি বলে ত্রাহি ত্রাহি করে চিৎকার করে উঠবেন সে বিষয়ে কিঞ্চিৎ সন্দেহও পোষণ করার উপায় নেই। বন্ধু প্রেমে পড়েছে, বন্ধুর প্রেমের ঢাল হিসেবে উস্টার সাহেব এগিতে আসেন। যথারীতি ভজকট করে ফেলবেন। স্টার জলসার শাশুড়ীর চেয়েও দজ্জাল খতরনাক এক ফুপু আছে তার। নাম আগাথা। এই ভদ্রমহিলা আগের জনমে বোধহয় কসাই ছিলেন। মনে কোনো মায়াদয়া নেই। উস্টার সাহেবের জন্য তিনি মূর্তি্মান আতঙ্কের সংবাদ। সুতরাং তার দেয়া আদেশ নিষেধও তাকে বিনা বাক্যব্যয়ে মেনে নিতে হয়। জীবনে দুঃখ বাড়ানোর জন্য রয়েছে বখাটে চাচাতো ভাই, কুটিল এক শত্রু। জীবনে সব ভালো যে ভালো লাগে না সেটার আরেক প্রমাণ হচ্ছে অনোরিয়া গ্লসপ। ধনীর দুলালের কিছুর অভাব না থাকা সত্বেও জীবনের পদে পদে নানারকম উদ্ভট, অদ্ভুতুড়ে, বিদুঘুটে সব বিপদের ছড়াছড়ি। সহজ সরল এই লোকের পক্ষে এসব বিপদের মোকাবেলা করা সম্ভব নয়৷ তাহলে তিনি এসব বিপদ থেকে পরিত্রাণ পান কীভাবে?
কারণ তার জীবনে বিপদের ত্রাণক��্তা হিসেবে রয়েছে তারই খানসামা, যে কী না জগতের সকল ভেজাল তার ক্ষুরধার মস্তিষ্ক দ্বারা সমাধান করে ফেলতে পারে। নাম তার জীভস!
প্রথমেই বলি, বইয়ের সারসংক্ষেপ পড়ে এই বইয়ের শব্দ বো মা সম্পর্কে বিন্দুমাত্র ধারণা করা সম্ভব নয়। আজ্ঞে চোখ কুঁচকে তাকালেও লাভ হবে না। এগুলোকে আমি শব্দ বো মাই বলবো। আমার সহধর্মিণী রোজা রেখে ঘুম দিচ্ছিলেন। আমি নাকি টানেলের মত গাড়ি যাওয়ার মত শব্দ করে হেসে ��ঠে উনার সাধের ঘুম ভাঙিয়ে দিয়েছি। তিনি এই বিষয়ে তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানিয়ে শাস্তিস্বরূপ আমার সন্ধ্যাকালীন চায়ের দায়িত্ব থেকে নিজেকে মুক্ত ঘোষণা করেছেন। এখানে আমার দোষটা কোথায় আপনারাই বলুন? রাতুল ভাই এমন সব শব্দ বা বাক্য ছুড়ে মেরেছেন আমি হাহা ঠাঠা বা টানেলের মধ্যে ট্রেন যাওয়ার মত শব্দ করে হেসে উঠতে বাধ্য হয়েছি। চা ক্যান্সেল হলে সেটা তারই হওয়া উচিৎ। যুক্তি তো সেটাই বলে। নাকি?
দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস বইয়ের গল্প এক ধনীর দুলাল আর তার খানসামাকে ঘিরে গড়ে উঠেছে। আধবলদ ধনীর দুলাল নিত্যনতুন সমস্যায় না পড়লে তার পেটের কফি হজম হয় না। লোক যদিও সে নিতান্তই ভালো মানুষ। এই ভদ্রলোককে নানা রকম বিপদাপদ থেকে রক্ষা করার জন্য রয়েছে তার ব্যক্তিগত খানসামা জীভস। অত্যন্ত ক্ষুরধার মস্তিষ্কের অধিকারী, স্বল্পভাষী এই লোক জনাব উস্টারের গার্ডিয়ান এঞ্জেল হিসেবে অবতীর্ণ হয়েছেন। জনাব উস্টার তার বন্ধুবান্ধব, ফুপু বা পরিচিত বিভিন্ন মানুষের নিকট থেকে নানাবিধ বিদঘুটে ভেজালের সম্মুখীন হন, বেচারা উস্টার সেসবের হাত থেকে পরিত্রাণের উপায় না পেয়ে নিজ গর্ব ক্ষুণ্ণ করে খানসামার নিকট সাহায্যের প্রার্থণা নিয়ে হাজির হয়ে পড়েন। গল্পের প্রতিটি স্তর জুড়ে তাদের বিভিন্ন প্রকার কাজকর্ম, আলাপ সালাপ আপনাকে মাটিতে গড়াগড়ি দিতে বাধ্য করবে। আরে ও কী, মাইন্ড করেন কেন? আমি তো আপনাদের জলহস্তীর মত কাদায় গড়াগড়ির কথা বলিনি। বলেছি হাসতে হাসতে গড়াগড়ি দেবেন। অল্প ভাষায় বলতে গেলে এত অসাধারণ চমৎকার রসিকতাপূর্ণ বই আমি সারাজীবনে হাতে গোণা অল্প কিছু পড়েছি। গল্পের জন্য পরিপূর্ণ একশো মার্কের সঙ্গে পূর্বের আমলের স্যারদের মত অতিরিক্ত দশ যোগ করে দেয়া যায়।
বইয়ের নাম শুনে হয়ত মনে হতে পারে জীভস বইয়ের প্রধান চরিত্র। হ্যাঁ, জীভস প্রধান চরিত্র বটে তবে বার্টাম উস্টারের প্রয়োজনীয়তা বা গুরুত্ব জীভসের চেয়ে একবিন্দু কম নয়। তারা একে অপরের পরিপূরক। জীভস হচ্ছে তরকারির লবণ। যতই নাচানাচি ঘাটাঘাটি করো, এই বান্দা না থাকলে তরকারি খেয়ে ভালো লাগবে? আবার শুধু লবণ দিয়েও তো আর তরকারি হবে না তাই না? ধনীর দুলাল চরিত্রে আমরা অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে একটু বখাটে টাইপের লোক দেখি। কিন্তু এখানের ধনীর দুলাল ভালো লোক। বেশ পরোপকারী বটে। বইয়ের বর্ণনা তার ভাষাতেই হয়েছে। সুতরাং তিনি যদি লোক খারাপ হয়েও থাকেন আমি নিশ্চিত তিনি নিজের যাবতীয় অকাজ বইয়ে উল্লেখ করতে ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে উল্লেখ করতে ভুলে গেছেন। বইয়ে ভদ্রলোকের পরিচয়, কথাবার্তা বা কাজকর্ম দেখে তাকে পছন্দ না করে উপায় নেই। এহেন ভদ্রলোকের খানসামা সাহেব আবার বেশ স্বল্পবাক মানুষ। কিছুটা অভিমানীও বটে। তার কথার বিপরীতে গেলে তিনি হাত গুটিয়ে বসে থাকেন। তবে মালিকের প্রতি তার আন্তরিক ভালোবাসা রয়েছে। জগতের তাবত হেজিপেজি বিপদ সম্পর্কে সে অবগত এবং সর্বদা তার মালিককে এসবের হাত থেকে রক্ষা করতে বদ্ধপরিকর থাকে। এর জন্য অবশ্য মাঝেমধ্যে তাকে দুষ্টমিষ্ট পদ্ধতির অবলম্বন করতে হয়। তবে কে না জানে সোজা আঙুলে সবসময় ঘি ওঠে না? বইয়ের আরেকটা চরিত্র আমার ভীষণ পছন্দ হয়েছে। জনাব উস্টারের বন্ধু প্রেমিক পুরুষ বিঙ্গো লিটল। তিনি কিছুদিন পর পর নিত্যনতুন মেয়েদের প্রথম দর্শনেই পড়ে যান। এসব নিয়ে বেশ ঝামেলার সম্মুখীন হতে হয় সেটা বলাইবাহুল্য। কিন্তু সমস্যা কী? ওই যে আছে উস্টার আর জীভস! দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস বইয়ে ছোট ছোট অনেক গুলো চরিত্র রয়েছে। তারা সবাই একে অপরের সঙ্গে পাল্লা দিয়েছে কে কতটা আকাম করে আমাদের হাসাতে হাসাতে মেরে ফেলতে পারে। যতগুলো চরিত্রই এসেছে, তারা নিজেদের স্বাদে গুণে দোষে অনন্য। এদের মধ্যে জনাব উস্টারের বাগদত্তা অনোরিয়ো গ্লসপ, কুটিল শত্রু রুপার্ট স্টেগেলস, স্টার জলসামার্কা খোরাসানি ম্যাডাম টাইপ ফুপু আগাথা, দুই জমজ ভাই ক্লড আর ইউস্টাস, কুকুরমুখো, মাছ মুখো সহ প্রায় সবাই আপনাকে হাসাতে হাসাতে জানে মে রে ফেলতে পারে। এক কথায় লাজবাব!
রম্য গল্পের ভালো লাগা বা মন্দ লাগা নির্ভর করে অনেকটাই লেখক বা অনুবাদক/রূপান্তরকারীর দক্ষতার উপরে। কোনো রকম আলতু ফালতু জোকস না বলে দৈনন্দিন ঘটনাবলি বর্ণনা করে হাসানো অত্যধিক কঠিন একটা বিষয়। এই ধরনের বই জনসাধারণকে ভালো লাগাতে হলে লেখক বা রূপান্তরকারীকে রসিক প্লাস দক্ষ হতে হবে। রাতুল ভাই, কুর্ণিশ গ্রহণ করবেন। আপনার আমার এক্সপেক্টেশন ছাড়িয়ে মহাকালের পথে ভেসে গিয়েছেন। তিনি কতটা দক্ষতার ছাপ রেখেছেন আমি দুটো উদাহরণ দিয়ে দেখাই। এক দৃশ্যে বিঙ্গো ইমোশনাল ব্ল্যাকমেইল করে উস্টারকে দিয়ে নিজের কাজ হাসিল করে নিতে চায়।
- তোমাকে বলেছিলাম না, দারুণ একটা বুদ্ধি খেলেছে মাথায়?এটাই সেটা। আমি চাই আমার আর ম্যাবেলের বিয়ের প্রস্তাবটা তুমিই উপস্থাপন করবে। আসলে... নিজে বলার সাহস পাচ্ছি না।
- বলছ কী! আঁতকে উঠলাম। 'ফাঁ সিতে ঝোলাতে চাও নাকি আমাকে?'
- অমন করার কী আছে? আমার বন্ধু নও তুমি?
- হলামই বা। কিন্তু বন্ধুত্বের খাতিরে কতটুকু কী করা যাবে, তারও একটা সীমা থাকে।
- বার্টি! তিরস্কারের সুরে বলল বিঙ্গো। আমি একবারে তোমার প্রাণ বাঁচিয়েছিলাম, ভুলে গেছ?
- কবে সেটা?
- বাঁচাইনি বলছ? তা হলে নিশ্চয়ই অন্য কারও হবে!
বইয়ের আরেক দৃশ্যে উস্টারের বাগদত্তার ছোট ভাইয়ের সঙ্গে উস্টারের কথোপকথন। যদিও উস্টার এই বিয়েতে শতভাগ না ভোট দিয়েছে। প্রসঙ্গত উল্লেখ্য যে বিঙ্গো তখন উস্টারের বাগদত্তার প্রেমে পাগল। সেখানে বিঙ্গো গিয়েছে উস্টারের বাগদত্তার মন জয় করার উদ্দেশ্যে।
-খোকা, কেমন আছ তুমি?
- 'আছি আর কী', বলল ও।
- সুন্দর জায়গা।
- 'আছে আর কী', বলল ও।
- মাছ ধরতে ভাল লাগছে নিশ্চয়ই?
- 'লাগছে আর কী', বলল ও।
এভাবে কথোপকথন চালিয়ে যাওয়ার ভয়াবহ যন্ত্রণা থেকে বিঙ্গো আমাকে উদ্ধার করল। ' এই চিজের সঙ্গে কথা বলতে মাথা ধরে যায় না তোমার?' অসওয়াল্ডের দিকে ঈঙ্গিত করে বললাম আমি।

- 'তুমি একে ভালোবাসো?' অবাক হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করলাম। ব্যাপারটা যে আদৌ সম্ভব, মাথাতেই আসেনি আমার।
এসব কথপোকথন বইয়ে পড়তে গেলে না হেসে থাকতেই পারবেন না। এমন দুর্দান্ত শব্দ, বাক্য, ভাষার প্রয়োগ খুব কম ক্ষেত্রেই দেখা যায়। যেখানে যেসব শব্দের প্রয়োজন বা ডায়ালগের প্রয়োজন ঠিক সেসব শব বা ডায়ালগই ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। বইটা যে রূপান্তর, মাঝেমধ্যে সেটাই ভুলে গিয়েছি। হেসেই কুল পাই না, এতকিছু চিন্তা করবো কখন?
বর্তমান সময়ে সুস্থ বিনোদনের বেশ অভাব। হাহা, ঠাঠা করে গলা ফাটিয়ে হাসা বা মুচকি হাসার জন্য শোভনীয় কৌতুককর বক্তব্য বিভিন্ন কিতাবে খুবই কম দেখা যায়। অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে ব্যাপারগুলো লিমিট ক্রস করে ফেলে। এই বইয়ে একটা সিঙ্গেল লাইন পাবেন না এরকম। অশ্লীলতার অ ও নেই বইয়ে। অথচ হাস্যরসাত্মক মুহুর্তের অভাব ছিল না বইয়ে। পৃষ্ঠা উল্টিয়েছি আর হেসেছি। কখনো মুচকি হাসি তো কখনো হাহা করে হাসি। নির্মল বিনোদন বোধহয় একেই বলে।
সেবা প্রকাশনীর প্রোডাকশন কেমন সকলেই মোটামুটি জানেন। উনাদের বই হাটে, মাঠে, ঘাটে, শুয়ে, উবু হয়ে, ভাঁজ হয়ে, দাঁড়িয়ে যেভাভে খুশী সেভাবেই পড়া যায়। ছোট খাটো বই, কমখরচে এত দারুণ কিছু আর কেউ এখনো মনে হয় না উপহার দিতে পেরেছে। এই বইয়ের ক্ষেত্রেও সেবা তার শতভাগ সুনাম ধরে রেখেছে। সেবার বই পড়তে যেয়েই মনে হয় প্রোডাকশন, প্রচ্ছদ এসব নিয়ে মাথা ঘামানোর অভ্যাস ছিল না বললেই চলে। তবে এই বইটার প্রচ্ছদ খুবই চমৎকার লেগেছে। সেবার সম্পাদনা প্যানেলে যারা থাকেন তাদ���র উচিৎ সম্পাদনার উপরে কিছু কোর্স করানো। তাদের লেভেলের সম্পাদনা অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে হয়ে ওঠেনা কোথাও। তবে আশার কথা বর্তমান সময়ে নতুন নতুন কিছু দক্ষ মানুষ সম্পাদনার জগতে এসেছেন। তারা ইতিমধ্যে তাদের কাজের প্রমাণও রেখেছেন। তাদের জন্য শুভকামনা। যা হোক, এই বইয়ের সম্পাদনা নিয়ে কোনো কথাই হবে না। টপ নচ। সেবার বইয়ের বানান ভুল হয় না বললেই চলে। এই বইয়ে এক আধটা টাইপো ছিল বটে কিন্তু উহা সম্পূর্ণরূপে ইগনোর করা যায়। কোনো কিছু নিয়ে আপত্তি করার অপশন আছে বলে মনে হয় না।
দীর্ঘ বকবকানি প্রায় শেষের পথে। আমি জানি প্রায় শুনে অনেকেই বিরক্তিতে চোখ মুখ কুঁচকে দুয়েকটা গালি ঝেড়ে দিয়েছেন মনে মনে। তবে আমারও তো পিঠের চামড়া বাঁচাতে হবে নাকি? উপরে বলেছিলাম রোজা থেকে এই বই না পড়তে। মনে আছে? এবার বলি তার আসল কারণ। দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস পড়ে আমি এতটাই হেসেছি, হাসতে হাসতে আমার প্রচন্ড ক্ষুধা পেয়ে গিয়েছিল। হাসিও যে এত পরিশ্রমের কাজ হতে পারে এই কঠিন বেরসিক দুনিয়ায় থাকতে থাকতে মাঝেমধ্যেই ভুলে যাই। নিজে হেসে ধরা তো খেয়েছিই সেই সঙ্গে হাসির শাস্তিস্বরূপ চা ক্যান্সেল হয়ে যাওয়ারও সমূহ সম্ভাবনা দেখা দিয়েছিল। যদিও বিভিন্নরকম ইমোশনাল ব্ল্যাকমেইলের মাধ্যমে এ যাত্রা বিপদ কাটিয়ে উঠেছিলুম। এখন আপনারাই বিচার করুন, সেধে সেধে রোজা লাগিয়ে বসে থাকবেন কী না। আমার সাবধান করার আমি সাবধান করে দিলুম, এখন আপনারাই চিন্তা করুন,
“ বাঁশ কেন ঝাড়ে
এসো আমার ঘাড়ে,”
নিবেন কী না!
উপরোক্ত লাইন পড়ে এখনই হা হা করে লেখক প্রকাশকসহ যারা এই বই পড়েছে তারা ছুটে এসে বলবে,
“অন্বয় শা লা র চামড়া
তুলে নেব আমরা“
স্লোগান দিতে দিতে। ও ভাই সোলোগান দিয়েন না। নাইলে আল্লাহর কাছে বিচার দিব কইলাম। আমি যাহা বলিয়াছি তাহা সত্য বৈ মিথ্যা তো কিছু নয়। অধমের বক্তব্য না শুনেই অধমের প্রাণপ্রিয় চামড়া তুলে নিয়ে যদি দেখা যায় অধম নিরপরাধ, বেচারা চামড়া কী তখন এই দুঃখ সইতে পারবে?
না, এমন সম্ভাবনা আছে বলে মনে হচ্ছে না। উল্টো চামড়া কর্তনকারী দলের লোকদের নিরপরাধ চামড়ার অভিশম্পাত খেয়ে বংশ নির্বংশ হয়ে যাওয়ার সমূহ সম্ভাবনা দেখা দিতে পারে।
চলুন নেমে পড়ি চামড়া রক্ষা করার মিশনে। দেখা যাক বক্তব্য শেষ করার পরে চামড়া স্বস্থানে বহাল তবিয়তে থাকে নাকি অত্যাচারী লেখক প্রকাশক পড়ুয়াদের অত্যাচারে পিঠ ছেড়ে মানে মানে পালিয়ে বাঁচে।
দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস, সেবা প্রকাশনীর বইয়ের ভান্ডারে নব্য সংযোজন। আমরা যারা সেবার বই পড়ে বড় হয়েছি তারা নতুন সেবার বই হাতে পেলে যেন হাতে ঈদের চাঁদ দেখতে পাওয়ার মত আনন্দিত হয়ে উঠতাম। বই শেষ না করা পর্যন্ত খাওয়া, ঘুম, শয়নে স্বপনে এমনকী ক্লাসের পড়ার ফাঁকেও এই বই নিয়েই ভাবতাম। এসব দেখে প্রেমিকারাও নির্ঘাত হিংসেয় জর্জরিত হয়ে উঠতো। যদিও মাঝের বেশ কিছু বছরে সেই আনন্দে অনেকাংশে ভাটা পড়েছে। কারণ সেবার বইয়ের মান পড়তির দিকে চলে গিয়েছিল। সে জন্য বেশ কিছু বই আমি নিজেই পড়িনি। দীর্ঘদিন পর ডিক স্যাণ্ড বইটা পড়ে খুবই মজা পেয়েছিলাম। সেদিনই দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস বইটা অর্ডার করে ফেলি। সেবার থ্যাংক ইউ জীভস, ক্যারি অন জীভস দুটোই আমার ভীষণ পছন্দ। দেখার ইচ্ছে ছিল আগের গুলোর মান রূপান্তরকারী রাতুল ভাই এই বইটাতে ধরে রাখতে পেরেছে কী না। পেরেছেন কী না সেসব মূল বক্তব্যে যাওয়ার পূর্বে ছোট্ট করে বইয়ের সারসংক্ষেপ সম্পর্কে ধারণা দেয়া যাক।
বার্টাম উস্টার। ধনীর দুলাল। তবে ধনীর দুলাল হলেও লোক ভালো আছেন। বেশ অমায়িক সহজ সরল এই ভদ্রলোক মানুষের বিপদে নিজেকে এগিয়ে দেন। বন্ধুবান্ধব থেকে চোর বাটপার কেউই তাকে ভুজুংভাজুং ভাজুং বুঝ দিয়ে খসিয়ে নিতে কসুর করে না। ভদ্রলোকের সবই ঠিক আছে কিন্তু তার খানসামার ভাষায় তার ঘটে বুদ্ধি কিছুটা কম আছে। তাকে বুদ্ধিমান তো বলাই যায় না, তিনি কোনোদিক থেকেই বুদ্ধিমান নন। একেবারেই বোকাসোকা। এহেন ধনীর দুলাল, সেই সঙ্গে সোনায় সোহাগা হিসেবে বোকাসোকা লোক যে প্রায়ই জগতের নানাবিধ জটিলতার ফাঁদে পড়ে ছেড়ে দে মা কেঁদে বাঁচি বলে ত্রাহি ত্রাহি করে চিৎকার করে উঠবেন সে বিষয়ে কিঞ্চিৎ সন্দেহও পোষণ করার উপায় নেই। বন্ধু প্রেমে পড়েছে, বন্ধুর প্রেমের ঢাল হিসেবে উস্টার সাহেব এগিতে আসেন। যথারীতি ভজকট করে ফেলবেন। স্টার জলসার শাশুড়ীর চেয়েও দজ্জাল খতরনাক এক ফুপু আছে তার। নাম আগাথা। এই ভদ্রমহিলা আগের জনমে বোধহয় কসাই ছিলেন। মনে কোনো মায়াদয়া নেই। উস্টার সাহেবের জন্য তিনি মূর্তি্মান আতঙ্কের সংবাদ। সুতরাং তার দেয়া আদেশ নিষেধও তাকে বিনা বাক্যব্যয়ে মেনে নিতে হয়। জীবনে দুঃখ বাড়ানোর জন্য রয়েছে বখাটে চাচাতো ভাই, কুটিল এক শত্রু। জীবনে সব ভালো যে ভালো লাগে না সেটার আরেক প্রমাণ হচ্ছে অনোরিয়া গ্লসপ। ধনীর দুলালের কিছুর অভাব না থাকা সত্বেও জীবনের পদে পদে নানারকম উদ্ভট, অদ্ভুতুড়ে, বিদুঘুটে সব বিপদের ছড়াছড়ি। সহজ সরল এই লোকের পক্ষে এসব বিপদের মোকাবেলা করা সম্ভব নয়৷ তাহলে তিনি এসব বিপদ থেকে পরিত্রাণ পান কীভাবে?
কারণ তার জীবনে বিপদের ত্রাণক��্তা হিসেবে রয়েছে তারই খানসামা, যে কী না জগতের সকল ভেজাল তার ক্ষুরধার মস্তিষ্ক দ্বারা সমাধান করে ফেলতে পারে। নাম তার জীভস!
প্রথমেই বলি, বইয়ের সারসংক্ষেপ পড়ে এই বইয়ের শব্দ বো মা সম্পর্কে বিন্দুমাত্র ধারণা করা সম্ভব নয়। আজ্ঞে চোখ কুঁচকে তাকালেও লাভ হবে না। এগুলোকে আমি শব্দ বো মাই বলবো। আমার সহধর্মিণী রোজা রেখে ঘুম দিচ্ছিলেন। আমি নাকি টানেলের মত গাড়ি যাওয়ার মত শব্দ করে হেসে ��ঠে উনার সাধের ঘুম ভাঙিয়ে দিয়েছি। তিনি এই বিষয়ে তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানিয়ে শাস্তিস্বরূপ আমার সন্ধ্যাকালীন চায়ের দায়িত্ব থেকে নিজেকে মুক্ত ঘোষণা করেছেন। এখানে আমার দোষটা কোথায় আপনারাই বলুন? রাতুল ভাই এমন সব শব্দ বা বাক্য ছুড়ে মেরেছেন আমি হাহা ঠাঠা বা টানেলের মধ্যে ট্রেন যাওয়ার মত শব্দ করে হেসে উঠতে বাধ্য হয়েছি। চা ক্যান্সেল হলে সেটা তারই হওয়া উচিৎ। যুক্তি তো সেটাই বলে। নাকি?
দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস বইয়ের গল্প এক ধনীর দুলাল আর তার খানসামাকে ঘিরে গড়ে উঠেছে। আধবলদ ধনীর দুলাল নিত্যনতুন সমস্যায় না পড়লে তার পেটের কফি হজম হয় না। লোক যদিও সে নিতান্তই ভালো মানুষ। এই ভদ্রলোককে নানা রকম বিপদাপদ থেকে রক্ষা করার জন্য রয়েছে তার ব্যক্তিগত খানসামা জীভস। অত্যন্ত ক্ষুরধার মস্তিষ্কের অধিকারী, স্বল্পভাষী এই লোক জনাব উস্টারের গার্ডিয়ান এঞ্জেল হিসেবে অবতীর্ণ হয়েছেন। জনাব উস্টার তার বন্ধুবান্ধব, ফুপু বা পরিচিত বিভিন্ন মানুষের নিকট থেকে নানাবিধ বিদঘুটে ভেজালের সম্মুখীন হন, বেচারা উস্টার সেসবের হাত থেকে পরিত্রাণের উপায় না পেয়ে নিজ গর্ব ক্ষুণ্ণ করে খানসামার নিকট সাহায্যের প্রার্থণা নিয়ে হাজির হয়ে পড়েন। গল্পের প্রতিটি স্তর জুড়ে তাদের বিভিন্ন প্রকার কাজকর্ম, আলাপ সালাপ আপনাকে মাটিতে গড়াগড়ি দিতে বাধ্য করবে। আরে ও কী, মাইন্ড করেন কেন? আমি তো আপনাদের জলহস্তীর মত কাদায় গড়াগড়ির কথা বলিনি। বলেছি হাসতে হাসতে গড়াগড়ি দেবেন। অল্প ভাষায় বলতে গেলে এত অসাধারণ চমৎকার রসিকতাপূর্ণ বই আমি সারাজীবনে হাতে গোণা অল্প কিছু পড়েছি। গল্পের জন্য পরিপূর্ণ একশো মার্কের সঙ্গে পূর্বের আমলের স্যারদের মত অতিরিক্ত দশ যোগ করে দেয়া যায়।
বইয়ের নাম শুনে হয়ত মনে হতে পারে জীভস বইয়ের প্রধান চরিত্র। হ্যাঁ, জীভস প্রধান চরিত্র বটে তবে বার্টাম উস্টারের প্রয়োজনীয়তা বা গুরুত্ব জীভসের চেয়ে একবিন্দু কম নয়। তারা একে অপরের পরিপূরক। জীভস হচ্ছে তরকারির লবণ। যতই নাচানাচি ঘাটাঘাটি করো, এই বান্দা না থাকলে তরকারি খেয়ে ভালো লাগবে? আবার শুধু লবণ দিয়েও তো আর তরকারি হবে না তাই না? ধনীর দুলাল চরিত্রে আমরা অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে একটু বখাটে টাইপের লোক দেখি। কিন্তু এখানের ধনীর দুলাল ভালো লোক। বেশ পরোপকারী বটে। বইয়ের বর্ণনা তার ভাষাতেই হয়েছে। সুতরাং তিনি যদি লোক খারাপ হয়েও থাকেন আমি নিশ্চিত তিনি নিজের যাবতীয় অকাজ বইয়ে উল্লেখ করতে ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে উল্লেখ করতে ভুলে গেছেন। বইয়ে ভদ্রলোকের পরিচয়, কথাবার্তা বা কাজকর্ম দেখে তাকে পছন্দ না করে উপায় নেই। এহেন ভদ্রলোকের খানসামা সাহেব আবার বেশ স্বল্পবাক মানুষ। কিছুটা অভিমানীও বটে। তার কথার বিপরীতে গেলে তিনি হাত গুটিয়ে বসে থাকেন। তবে মালিকের প্রতি তার আন্তরিক ভালোবাসা রয়েছে। জগতের তাবত হেজিপেজি বিপদ সম্পর্কে সে অবগত এবং সর্বদা তার মালিককে এসবের হাত থেকে রক্ষা করতে বদ্ধপরিকর থাকে। এর জন্য অবশ্য মাঝেমধ্যে তাকে দুষ্টমিষ্ট পদ্ধতির অবলম্বন করতে হয়। তবে কে না জানে সোজা আঙুলে সবসময় ঘি ওঠে না? বইয়ের আরেকটা চরিত্র আমার ভীষণ পছন্দ হয়েছে। জনাব উস্টারের বন্ধু প্রেমিক পুরুষ বিঙ্গো লিটল। তিনি কিছুদিন পর পর নিত্যনতুন মেয়েদের প্রথম দর্শনেই পড়ে যান। এসব নিয়ে বেশ ঝামেলার সম্মুখীন হতে হয় সেটা বলাইবাহুল্য। কিন্তু সমস্যা কী? ওই যে আছে উস্টার আর জীভস! দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস বইয়ে ছোট ছোট অনেক গুলো চরিত্র রয়েছে। তারা সবাই একে অপরের সঙ্গে পাল্লা দিয়েছে কে কতটা আকাম করে আমাদের হাসাতে হাসাতে মেরে ফেলতে পারে। যতগুলো চরিত্রই এসেছে, তারা নিজেদের স্বাদে গুণে দোষে অনন্য। এদের মধ্যে জনাব উস্টারের বাগদত্তা অনোরিয়ো গ্লসপ, কুটিল শত্রু রুপার্ট স্টেগেলস, স্টার জলসামার্কা খোরাসানি ম্যাডাম টাইপ ফুপু আগাথা, দুই জমজ ভাই ক্লড আর ইউস্টাস, কুকুরমুখো, মাছ মুখো সহ প্রায় সবাই আপনাকে হাসাতে হাসাতে জানে মে রে ফেলতে পারে। এক কথায় লাজবাব!
রম্য গল্পের ভালো লাগা বা মন্দ লাগা নির্ভর করে অনেকটাই লেখক বা অনুবাদক/রূপান্তরকারীর দক্ষতার উপরে। কোনো রকম আলতু ফালতু জোকস না বলে দৈনন্দিন ঘটনাবলি বর্ণনা করে হাসানো অত্যধিক কঠিন একটা বিষয়। এই ধরনের বই জনসাধারণকে ভালো লাগাতে হলে লেখক বা রূপান্তরকারীকে রসিক প্লাস দক্ষ হতে হবে। রাতুল ভাই, কুর্ণিশ গ্রহণ করবেন। আপনার আমার এক্সপেক্টেশন ছাড়িয়ে মহাকালের পথে ভেসে গিয়েছেন। তিনি কতটা দক্ষতার ছাপ রেখেছেন আমি দুটো উদাহরণ দিয়ে দেখাই। এক দৃশ্যে বিঙ্গো ইমোশনাল ব্ল্যাকমেইল করে উস্টারকে দিয়ে নিজের কাজ হাসিল করে নিতে চায়।
- তোমাকে বলেছিলাম না, দারুণ একটা বুদ্ধি খেলেছে মাথায়?এটাই সেটা। আমি চাই আমার আর ম্যাবেলের বিয়ের প্রস্তাবটা তুমিই উপস্থাপন করবে। আসলে... নিজে বলার সাহস পাচ্ছি না।
- বলছ কী! আঁতকে উঠলাম। 'ফাঁ সিতে ঝোলাতে চাও নাকি আমাকে?'
- অমন করার কী আছে? আমার বন্ধু নও তুমি?
- হলামই বা। কিন্তু বন্ধুত্বের খাতিরে কতটুকু কী করা যাবে, তারও একটা সীমা থাকে।
- বার্টি! তিরস্কারের সুরে বলল বিঙ্গো। আমি একবারে তোমার প্রাণ বাঁচিয়েছিলাম, ভুলে গেছ?
- কবে সেটা?
- বাঁচাইনি বলছ? তা হলে নিশ্চয়ই অন্য কারও হবে!
বইয়ের আরেক দৃশ্যে উস্টারের বাগদত্তার ছোট ভাইয়ের সঙ্গে উস্টারের কথোপকথন। যদিও উস্টার এই বিয়েতে শতভাগ না ভোট দিয়েছে। প্রসঙ্গত উল্লেখ্য যে বিঙ্গো তখন উস্টারের বাগদত্তার প্রেমে পাগল। সেখানে বিঙ্গো গিয়েছে উস্টারের বাগদত্তার মন জয় করার উদ্দেশ্যে।
-খোকা, কেমন আছ তুমি?
- 'আছি আর কী', বলল ও।
- সুন্দর জায়গা।
- 'আছে আর কী', বলল ও।
- মাছ ধরতে ভাল লাগছে নিশ্চয়ই?

এভাবে কথোপকথন চালিয়ে যাওয়ার ভয়াবহ যন্ত্রণা থেকে বিঙ্গো আমাকে উদ্ধার করল। ' এই চিজের সঙ্গে কথা বলতে মাথা ধরে যায় না তোমার?' অসওয়াল্ডের দিকে ঈঙ্গিত করে বললাম আমি।

সেবা প্রকাশনীর প্রোডাকশন কেমন সকলেই মোটামুটি জানেন। উনাদের বই হাটে, মাঠে, ঘাটে, শুয়ে, উবু হয়ে, ভাঁজ হয়ে, দাঁড়িয়ে যেভাভে খুশী সেভাবেই পড়া যায়। ছোট খাটো বই, কমখরচে এত দারুণ কিছু আর কেউ এখনো মনে হয় না উপহার দিতে পেরেছে। এই বইয়ের ক্ষেত্রেও সেবা তার শতভাগ সুনাম ধরে রেখেছে। সেবার বই পড়তে যেয়েই মনে হয় প্রোডাকশন, প্রচ্ছদ এসব নিয়ে মাথা ঘামানোর অভ্যাস ছিল না বললেই চলে। তবে এই বইটার প্রচ্ছদ খুবই চমৎকার লেগেছে। সেবার সম্পাদনা প্যানেলে যারা থাকেন তাদ���র উচিৎ সম্পাদনার উপরে কিছু কোর্স করানো। তাদের লেভেলের সম্পাদনা অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে হয়ে ওঠেনা কোথাও। তবে আশার কথা বর্তমান সময়ে নতুন নতুন কিছু দক্ষ মানুষ সম্পাদনার জগতে এসেছেন। তারা ইতিমধ্যে তাদের কাজের প্রমাণও রেখেছেন। তাদের জন্য শুভকামনা। যা হোক, এই বইয়ের সম্পাদনা নিয়ে কোনো কথাই হবে না। টপ নচ। সেবার বইয়ের বানান ভুল হয় না বললেই চলে। এই বইয়ে এক আধটা টাইপো ছিল বটে কিন্তু উহা সম্পূর্ণরূপে ইগনোর করা যায়। কোনো কিছু নিয়ে আপত্তি করার অপশন আছে বলে মনে হয় না।
দীর্ঘ বকবকানি প্রায় শেষের পথে। আমি জানি প্রায় শুনে অনেকেই বিরক্তিতে চোখ মুখ কুঁচকে দুয়েকটা গালি ঝেড়ে দিয়েছেন মনে মনে। তবে আমারও তো পিঠের চামড়া বাঁচাতে হবে নাকি? উপরে বলেছিলাম রোজা থেকে এই বই না পড়তে। মনে আছে? এবার বলি তার আসল কারণ। দ্য ইনইমিটেবল জীভস পড়ে আমি এতটাই হেসেছি, হাসতে হাসতে আমার প্রচন্ড ক্ষুধা পেয়ে গিয়েছিল। হাসিও যে এত পরিশ্রমের কাজ হতে পারে এই কঠিন বেরসিক দুনিয়ায় থাকতে থাকতে মাঝেমধ্যেই ভুলে যাই। নিজে হেসে ধরা তো খেয়েছিই সেই সঙ্গে হাসির শাস্তিস্বরূপ চা ক্যান্সেল হয়ে যাওয়ারও সমূহ সম্ভাবনা দেখা দিয়েছিল। যদিও বিভিন্নরকম ইমোশনাল ব্ল্যাকমেইলের মাধ্যমে এ যাত্রা বিপদ কাটিয়ে উঠেছিলুম। এখন আপনারাই বিচার করুন, সেধে সেধে রোজা লাগিয়ে বসে থাকবেন কী না। আমার সাবধান করার আমি সাবধান করে দিলুম, এখন আপনারাই চিন্তা করুন,

A wonderful collection of stories featuring the long-suffering but always dignified valet Jeeves and his hapless charge Bertie Wooster, as usual misunderstandings abound, relatives annoy and friends are lovestruck in the most unfortunate manner. This was the first of Wodehouse’s books to focus entirely on Jeeves and Wooster and it’s huge fun, a great introduction to this marvellous duo. My existing copies of Wodehouse are a bit battered and tattered, mostly paperbacks I’ve had for ages, so I’m more than tempted by this new deluxe hardback from Pushkin Press which would also work as a gift to press on friends who’ve somehow managed to miss out on these gloriously witty and uplifting stories.

A series of short stories in which Bingo repeatedly falls in love and Bertie Wooster gets himself into a number of difficult situations. Jeeves of course rises to each occasion and fixes all the problems, often benefitting himself along the way. No wonder Bertie looks upon him as some sort of saviour despite the fact that they disagree so decidedly on accessories.
This is an early entry in the Jeeves and Bertie books and the characters are not quite as developed as they are later, but the humour is certainly there. All good fun and a very easy read.

The first book in the series is all about Wooster and Jeeves whereas this book is more about Bingo and Jeeves, Bingo and Wooster, well- Bingo in general. Am I complaining?-- NO.
I thoroughly enjoyed all the idiocracies that Bingo got into.
There is an apt statement that describes Bingo...
Bingo got into this hilarious love escapades and then looked for help from Wooster. Wooster in turn looked at Jeeves to solve all the problems and Jeeves did that splendidly as usual. The many situations in the book had me snickering.
Each chapter and situation felt as if it's a standalone situation and Mr Claude and Mr Eustace were additional characters that are added just to create more hilarious situations.
But by the end of it we know that each and every episode is well linked and make a compact bigger story which is something I admire about Wodehouse's writing.
Overall this book is definitely engaging and lifts one's mood!

I was so post-prandial and so ready for this collection (which I prefer to think of as “the inimitable Wodehouse.”)
For those unfamiliar with this author or his subject matter, prepare to be taken back a century or so to the world of what Monty Python often referred to as the “upper-class twits” of British society. Bertie Wooster would likely qualify as part of that species, but he has “the inimitable Jeeves” to keep him from disaster (though not from all danger). Others also recognize the uniqueness of this Wooster. Here is how his friend, Bingo Little, phrases the situation:
"“Bertie,” he said, “I want your advice.” “Carry on.” “At least, not your advice, because that wouldn’t be much good to anybody. I mean, you’re a pretty consummate old ass, aren’t you? Not that I want to hurt your feelings, of course.” “No, no, I see that.” “What I wish you would do is to put the whole thing to that fellow Jeeves of yours, and see what he suggests. You’ve often told me that he has helped other pals of yours out of messes."
This book is basically a running commentary by Bertie of his life during a particular period of time and his formidable Aunt Agatha and “amigo” Bingo feature prominently. It begins when Bingo has a problem and needs to use Bertie and Jeeves to solve it. As in many of these yarns, Bertie is often dragged along only half understanding what it will take. Often there is a misunderstanding, such as by Bingo’s rich uncle, as follows:
"He stepped back a bit, still hanging on to the good right hand. “You are very young to have accomplished so much!” I couldn’t follow the train of thought. The family, especially my Aunt Agatha, who has savaged me incessantly from childhood up, have always rather made a point of the fact that mine is a wasted life, and that, since I won the prize at my first school for the best collection of wild flowers made during the summer holidays, I haven’t done a dam’ thing to land me on the nation’s scroll of fame. I was wondering if he couldn’t have got me mixed up with someone else,"
Bertie trusts his “manservant” Jeeves in almost everything. Yet, Jeeves has been overheard to observe: "“You will find Mr. Wooster,” he was saying to the substitute chappie, “an exceedingly pleasant and amiable young gentleman, but not intelligent. By no means intelligent. Mentally he is negligible—quite negligible.”" Though Bertie Wooster might not be the sharpest knife in the rack, his observations (courtesy of Wodehouse) are full of truth and wit:
"A roll and butter and a small coffee seemed the only things on the list that hadn’t been specially prepared by the nastier- minded members of the Borgia family for people they had a particular grudge against, so I chose them,"
"I turned to Aunt Agatha, whose demeanour was now rather like that of one who, picking daisies on the railway, has just caught the down express in the small of the back."
"We Woosters do not lightly forget. At least, we do—some things—appointments, and people’s birthdays, and letters to post, and all that—but not an absolute bally insult like the above. I brooded like the dickens."
"“How funny you are!” She chucked back her head and laughed with considerable vim. She had a penetrating sort of laugh. Rather like a train going into a tunnel."
"She looked at me in a proprietary sort of way. “I think,” she said, “I shall be able to make something of you, Bertie. It is true yours has been a wasted life up to the present, but you are still young, and there is a lot of good in you.”

"This is the eel's eyebrows" exclaims Bingo at one moment, and I would apply the comment to this second collection of stories featuring laid-back boulevardier Bertie Wooster and his brainy valet Jeeves. I found it better structured and an improvement over the debut in My Man Jeeves . Firstly, there are 11 short stories instead of four, and secondly, these stories are sequential, following a common plotline involving the romantic entanglements of Bingo Little, an old school friend of Bertie. I would say the volume is closer to the novel format than to the usual mix of unconnected sketches.
In the first story, Bingo falls in love with a waitress and petitions Bertie, or more precisely requests the use of Jeeves outsized intellect, to devise a plan to convince his rich uncle to approve the marriage and to dole out the money needed for the comfortable life. The pattern set here will repeat with hilarious variations in the next stories, as the best laid plans have a tendency to turn awkard and Jeeves is called upon to extricate the boys from trouble. The first story also introduces Rosie M. Banks, a popular author of romance novels that will return in later books.
What beats me is what principle you pick them on. The girls you fall in love with, I mean. I mean to say, what's your system? As far as I can see, no two of them are alike. First it was Mabel the waitress, then Honoria Glossop, then that fearful blister Charlotte Corday Rowbottham.
Another recurring aspect of the stories is the reluctance of Bertie Wooster to get involved in other people's troubles and forgo his amiable loafing around doing nothing. I'll let him explain why:
And of course, dash it, at the end of ten minutes I'd allowed the blighter to talk me round. It's always the way. Anyone can talk me round. If I were in a Trappist monastery, the first thing that would happen would be that some smooth performer would lure me into some frightful idiocy against my better judgement by means of the deaf-and-dumb language.
Jeeves, when he is not dazzling us with his devious plans, has his own running joke regarding the rather unorthodox fashion choices of his master. Whether it is about a pair of jazzy spats or some violently violet socks, a crimson cummerbund or a jaunty panama hat, Jeeves manages to wordlessly express his dissaproval, and faithfull readers of the series can guess who will win the argument in the end:
The fact of the matter is, Jeeves, though in many ways the best valet in London, is too conservative. Hide-bound, if you know what I mean, and an enemy to Progress.
Some of the non-Bingo related moments are providing extra ammunition for the laughs that make reading the book a risky business in public places. Most of the pranks can be probably traced to the author's school years and early clubbing in London and pertain to getting into scraps with the police, betting on the length of sermons in a parish church or on the results of amateur races at a country fair, hijinks at a cabaret revue in New York (Cyril Bassington-Bassington in Ask Dad ), and a rare occasion to get the upper hand in the neverending tug of war with Aunt Agatha (the case of the missing pearl necklace). I recognized almost all the sketches from the BBC production featuring Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, a TV series I would unreservedly recommend to all my friends. I am also looking forward to spotting some of these plots in later novels, as it is known Wodehouse tends to recycle ideas and characters.

"Mr Little is certainly warm-hearted, sir."

Halfway between short stories and a novel, there's a thread running through this book of Bingo Little's various love affairs - he really has to be the most susceptible young man in fiction! But that's ok because he's got Bertie on his side and, more importantly, Jeeves. So whether Bingo's getting Bertie to impersonate a romantic novelist or contribute to a London saucy musical transferred to a rural village hall, when things collapse into chaos Jeeves is more than a step ahead.
My big takeaway from this volume is how much more we learn about Jeeves: he is seen 'swinging a dashed efficient shoe' at a charity dance and has not just one woman but two on the go that we hear about - which made me consider him younger than I first thought and quite the man about town in his own way.
As always, Wodehouse's comic timing is immaculate and he gets the balance precisely right between giving us the tropes we expect and pulling out the surprises that we don't.
I'm a Blandings girl at heart but there are some gems in this volume including Sir Roderick and Honoria Glossop and the crazy, exhausting twin cousins, Eustace and Claude. Most of all, there's Bingo: always broke, always manipulating kind-hearted Bertie into helping him, always in love with some new woman. I especially laughed at 'Comrade Bingo' when he falls for a communist activist and brings her and her revolutionary friends to tea at Bertie's!

'No, sir, I fancy that the elder Mr Little's misfortune may be turned to the younger Mr Little's advantage. I was speaking only the other day to Mr Little's valet, and he was telling me that it has become his principal duty to read to Mr Little in the evenings. If I were in your place, sir, I should send young Mr Little to read to his uncle.'
'Nephew's devotion, you mean? Old man touched by kindly action, what?'
'Partly that, sir. But I would rely more on young Mr Little's choice of literature.'

If young Mr Little were to read day after day to his uncle a series of narratives in which marriage with young persons of an inferior social status was held up as both feasible and admirable, I fancy it would prepare the elder Mr Little's mind for the reception of the information that his nephew wishes to marry a waitress in a tea-shop.'
'Are there any books of that sort nowadays? The only ones I ever see mentioned in the papers are about married couples who find life grey, and can't stick each other at any price.'
'Yes, sir, there are a great many, neglected by the reviewers but widely read. You have never encountered All for Love, by Rosie M. Banks?'
'No.'
'Nor A Red, Red Summer Rose, by the same author?'
'No.'
'I have an aunt, sir, who owns an almost complete set of Rosie M. Banks'. I could easily borrow as many volumes as young Mr Little might require. They make very light, attractive reading.'

'All right, then. Toddle round to your aunt's tomorrow and grab a couple of the fruitiest. We can but have a dash at it.'

What would Jeeves have done to attract the attentions of the young lady?
'Bingo,' I said, 'what would Jeeves have done?'
'How do you mean, what would Jeeves have done?'
'I mean what would he have advised in a
case like yours? I mean you wanting to make a hit with Honoria Glossop and all that. Why, take it from me, laddie, he would have shoved you behind that clump of bushes over there; he would have got me to lure Honoria on to the bridge somehow; then, at the proper time, he would have told me to give the kid a pretty hefty jab in the small of the back, so as to shoot him into the water; and then you would have dived in and hauled him out. How about it?'
'You didn't think that out by yourself, Bertie?' said young Bingo, in a hushed sort of voice.
'Yes, I did. Jeeves isn't the only fellow with ideas.'
'But it's absolutely wonderful.'
'Just a suggestion.'
'The only objection I can see is that it would be so dashed awkward for you. I mean to say, suppose the kid turned round and said you had shoved him in, that would make you frightfully unpopular with Her.'
'I don't mind risking that.'
The man was deeply moved.
'Bertie, this is noble.'
'No, no.'
He clasped my hand silently, then chuckled like the last drop of water going down the waste-pipe in a bath.
'Now what?' I said.
'I was only thinking,' said young Bingo, 'how fearfully wet Oswald will get. Oh, happy day!'

In my final estimation, this is a very niche kind of novel. A hundred years old, it most definitely spoke to the people of that time, but humor is a fickle thing. I do like a lot of BBC humor and it frankly matriculated on Jeeves, but even if I can point out all the fine and good absurdist satire in this work, it still didn't quite make *ME* laugh.
Some of the romantic snafus made me smile. Some of Jeeve's underhanded cruelty might have evoked a nasty appreciation, but all in all, it was hard to feel any kind of connection with these higher-upper-crust snobs even when I turned my imagination up to level 10.
The best I can say is that I don't regret reading it, that it was very light entertainment, but I got neither deep satisfaction nor guffaws out of it. Alas.

Who do you call when you need cheering up? Jeeves!
This is a delightful collection of stories about Bertie and his amazing valet, Jeeves. Most of the stories involve Bertie's bumbling friend Bingo, who is constantly falling in love with different women and always needs Jeeves' advice to get out of his jams. I listened to this on audio and had a delightful time. Recommended.

At last, I have met Bertie Wooster and his man Jeeves. They are an amusing pair. Wodehouse’s writing is a pleasure to read, although I don’t think I’m up to plunging into the next book right away. For me, it will be most effective in smaller doses.
I have to wonder if this was where the Monty Python group got their first ideas for the Upper Class Twit of the Year sketches? The dim-witted Bertie and the lovelorn Bingo would be helpless without the well-informed Jeeves, who sorts out their various problems.
I loved Bertie’s penchant for purple socks and red cummerbunds, not to mention Eton spats! All of which Jeeves manages to dispense with to return Bertie to his bland, proper best. I also enjoyed Aunt Agatha’s determined meddling and Bertie’s reluctant involvement in the family battles.
My enjoyment of Dorothy Sayer’s Lord Peter Wimsey series inspired me to give Wodehouse a try—the two authors were contemporaries, and I suspected that the relationship between Lord Peter and his butler Bunter might be a nod to Wooster & Jeeves. Lord Peter may have started out a bit more like Bertie in the first book, but he quickly became a sleuth to be reckoned with; however the relationship between Lord and butler has definite similarities, confirming my hypothesis.
I’m delighted to have made their acquaintance and shall continue on with their adventures in the near future!

I'm somewhat astounded myself at the number of volumes of, not only Wodehouse but of Bertie and Jeeves stories I've read, listened to and in some cases placed on my own shelves. I came across Wodehouse some years ago when my kids were still in school. I was laid up the first time I took a Wodehouse book from the library and these stories turned out to be ones that my wife and I both found sidesplittingly hilarious.
Later I came across a couple of stories where some language that today would be considered offensive was used and I try to warn people up front that it's in a couple of stories. Please remember when the stories were written and that the words weren't meant to be offensive. If you can get passed and forgive that I believe you will find the stories rewarding.
