It’s hard to write a thorough review on books like this one without divulging into your personal experiences.
However, as I write this, it is Fertility Awareness Week so I might as well be honest about my own fertility journey.
I am currently in my third round of IVF after the first two attempts were unsuccessful. I took a one year break before heading into this round. The second round nearly broke me and I struggled to stay positive. This book was recommended by a friend who became successful on her fourth round. I thought to myself that there is nothing to lose by picking up another “positivity” book. I thought I was doing alright feeling positive before, but maybe I can learn a thing or two from Peer.
I must say, I learned many things. The first one being that I wasn’t doing the whole positive mindset as well as I thought. Peer teaches you exactly how to stay positive on this journey and acknowledges that it isn’t as easy. She mentions that acknowledging your negative thoughts is crucial to letting them go.
While doing my injections, I found I was able to welcome the jabs and literally dance and sing through it because I was relearning how to be positive. Already I have had the best outcome out of all my cycles. I found this book was really able to boost my confidence and morale, because IVF is a very tough journey only few people will fully understand.
4.5 ⭐️ because of typos, but willing to edit after I have had my own happy ending 👶🏻
Not a fan of this book. First of all, you can tell it was written super fast with not a lot of attention to detail. I used to be a fan of Marisa Peer but I have had to change my mind. Although I think she is brilliant at how she explains what hypnosis is all about, her stance on the subject of this book is a bit too superficial and actually dangerous. When you are trying to have a baby and not having much luck you are in a very vulnerable place. Although I agree that positive self-talk is important for mental health, stating that just believing in its possibility (and visualizing the outcome and talking to your imaginary baby daily) is not going to cut the mustard. Although this approach can work for other things such as psychosomatic illnesses it won't work for getting pregnant. Even if you do a million hypnosis sessions (which I did, and I AM a clinical hypnotherapist myself!!) it is just not up to you to decide your fate in this arena. The book states that all that is needed is certainty in the outcome and I think this can leave you feeling like it's your fault if you fail. NOT a good place to be when you are already dealing with the loss of a baby and /or the possibility of ever being a mother. That is why I would not recommend this book.
This book was hard for me to finish. It was very repetitive and the author said some things I found concerning.
I do believe that having a more positive mindset is beneficial and that you will have a higher chance of a positive outcome with one, but the author basically says you will have a baby if you believe it enough and that infertility is often in your mind. That you cannot have any negative thoughts or anxiety about pregnancy or your body won't allow you to conceive. As someone who has had recurrent miscarriages it's pretty invalidating to be told that my fears and doubts after experiencing several traumatic events are the reason I don't have a baby yet. The author says in the book that "babies in the womb respond to their mother's words and thoughts and some doctors believe that the high miscarriage rate can be due to some babies hearing or feeling they are unwanted and consequently miscarrying." I honestly couldn't believe I read that. What a horrible thing to put in someone's head who has gone through a miscarriage.
The author does make some good points about how having a goal to work towards gives you determination to get there and I do agree that telling yourself positive affirmations is beneficial.
I was recommended this book by a family member so I read it, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone going through infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss.
this book was so helpful in my fertility journey. i now have a baby! if nothing is a medical issue but your numbers are low, or you are aging, this is a must read.
