Nashville-based mystery writer Sarah Shankman is the author of the popular title I Still Miss My Man, But My Aim is Getting Better (1996), and the equally popular Samantha Adams series, the latest of which is Digging Up Momma.

I really enjoyed the Miss America setting. The backdrop seemed very realistic. There have been other stories set around contests of this nature that seem to be over in a day. This was a fun mystery in an enjoyable venue.
SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY - G+ Shankman, Sarah - 4th in series
Samantha Adams, star reporter for the Atlanta Constitution , returns in this colorful mystery by the author of the jocular Now Let's Talk of Graves . When one of the pageant judges disappears, Adams again plays amateur sleuth on the hunch that the judge is a homicide victim. The problem is, nobody cares if he's missing or dead. A roue, the judge was detested by the contestants he propositioned, the girlfriends he battered and the loan shark to whom he owed big bucks. The local police don't consider Sam's suspicions evidence, so she recruits her friends, a voodoo-priestess beauty contestant and an ex-football pro turned chef to prove that the judge is a missing corpse. As Miss America hopefuls strut their stuff, Sam learns that a sociopath views the pageant as a cash cow with one too many judges.
I felt the characters were poorly developed, and I wasn't able to "connect" with any of them. It felt more like I was being told the story, and not being drawn into it. Perhaps part of the problem was too many "Points of view" as most, if not all, characters in the story got their moment in the spotlight. I almost quit reading 3 times, but I kept going till the end. Some scenes were completely unbelievable, others humorous.
An OK read but the main character really didn't DO anything to figure out the mystery, which wasn't much of one. Lot of characters because of the setting and a good many of them didn't jell. Sort of fun to have backstage access, for what it was worth, to the Miss America pageant. I did like a few characters but those that I did were really pretty stereotypical. Could have been better book in a lot of ways. The best part was the title.
Samantha Adams is a fun character, and I find Shankman to be a witty and intelligent writer. Can't remember a thing about the plot, but I loved reading all her books.
