This one is so sweet and innocent, it feels like a Hallmark Channel telefilm. As a longtime fan of family entertainment, I consider that a good thing. Even though you'll see the ending coming a mile away, it still will make you smile; at least, it did me.

I loved everything about this book. I have always enjoyed Melody Carlson's story's and this one did not disappoint. From the beautiful cover to the story content this reader was completely swept into the pages of this book. I can sincerely say that this is the best book I've read in 2018.
Anna Gordon had her Masters degree in hotel management. Her Grandma Gordon had made this possible for Anna when she sold her house to help pay for college expenses. After graduation Anna took a job at the Value Lodge in her hometown as head manager . This allowed her to remain with her Grandma , who was still grieving the loss of her husband.
Two years later and Anna is still at the Value Lodge and feeling trapped in a dead end job. But then the unthinkable happens when the ungrateful owners reward her loyalty by firing her. But God never closes a door without opening another one. Almost immediately Anna gets an interview in New York City for a position as head manager at a stylish new hotel. Since her former bosses at The Value Lodge refuse to give her a good recommendation she instead gets hired as manager of housekeeping services.
The cover shows a young lady looking out over New York City and as I look at it I can feel her excitement over her new job . Anna has always wanted to work in New York City and now her dreams have come true. I love how the author's well researched story flowed so smoothly off the pages. But the story really begins after Anna goes to New York. If you like Christian Contemporary Romance you will love Once Upon a Summer Time. I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed this quick, easy summertime read from Melody Carlson. The romance was sweet although a little downplayed due to the fact that Anna is fearful of losing her job if she lets herself fall for Sean. I liked the immediate connection Sean and Anna feel after not having seen each other for years. However, after spending an amazing day together, they have to pull way back on any ongoing relationship when they find out they are working for the same hotel. This causes Anna to agonize way too much about her feelings for Sean.

As with the other book in this series, I enjoyed the description of the city and their working environment and how they both were helping renovate and get this new venture up and running. It was fun to read about Anna getting away from her dead end job to such a glamorous change. :)

There's very little to recommend this as a Christian romance. No mention of any kind of regular church attendance and maybe a few mentions of prayer. It's pretty much just a clean romance.

*My Thoughts*

When I found out we were going camping, I knew I had to take this book! Believe me when I tell you, I have a tub full of those awaiting for review but this one spoke to me. And not just because of the cover. It's because every time I see Melody Carlson across the front of a book, I think one word. Vacation! I don't know about you, but when I think of reading by the lake, I don't think of complex characters and murder mysteries. I think of calm. Relaxing. Refreshing. That's exactly what Melody delivers. Only this one is even better. Why?

It is not shallow. Obviously, it is a Christian book and you expect it not to be shallow. That isn't what I mean. I mean, it has depth. I had to use shallow for lack of a better term but the book has a slight depth I don't usually find in Melody Carlson. I like it. Oh, I have liked her other books too, she's my sister's favorite author but this one is different. The romance is quicker then most, in a laid back style that is signature Carlson, at least in my experience, but the characters are more interesting. We found out more about Anna's life BEFORE. Not "she was a child, grew up, got stuck in a rut, and moved to NYC where she fell in love with her childhood crush". Put like that, it sounds incredibly cliche'. Boring. Fortunately, that is not the case. There's so much more to it then that. We learn WHY she's stuck. Why she lives with her grandma. We learn about her character, what makes her tick. AND we learn about Sean, the illustrious crush from high school.

One thing I will say that I didn't like:

The whole book, there was only one point of view. There isn't much to deter my excitement in books but-if anything-that is it. I constantly found myself thinking: How does Sean really feel? What would he say if not for fear? What are his opinions? If you're like me, it could drive you crazy. Just a friendly heads up. :)
____________________________________________________

*My overall thoughts*

Once upon a Summertime by Melody Carlson is a sweet New York city romance that shows it isn't always easy to do what's right but it is always right and God will be with us along the way!

Hmmm... this book was cute and all, but the ending seemed rushed. It was a little too perfect to be believable.

This book started so slowly. I kept wondering when Anna was even going to get to NY since that was supposed to be the premise of the story. Some of the descriptions were tedious and were not important to the story at all. For instance, the penthouse is described ad nauseam, down to the colors of the pillows, and then nothing really ever happened in that room again (minus a conversation that could have been had anywhere).

By the time you get to the end of the book, you are so used to the snail pace, that you are blindsided with an upbrupt ending. I was left with so many questions. 1. Are these people seriously going to get married after "not dating" for 1 month (most of the month was spent avoiding each other and working 12 hour days)? I understand they knew each other as kids, but the book made it clear that that knew each other existed and that was about it. There was no friendship at that time. 2. HOw is Sean attracted to her? The way she is described makes her seem like an old lady in "Nicole Kidman's little sister's" body. She's a homebody who is constantly fretting about...well, everything. He is supposed to be gorgeous and apparently has no flaws. You think he could do better. 3. Anna & Sean both have to fire employees for having a relationship with each other, but they're going to go into work and tell everyone that they are engaged? How's that going to go over? And being engaged is not being married, so wouldn't they be fired anyway? Are they running to the justice of the peace that night? 4. Where's Anna's roommate going to live? You know, the roommate that got the apartment for them? Is Anna just going to toss her back to her old apartment? 5. How's her roommate going to take this news considering Anna just told her the night before that they WERE NOT DATING. Now they are engaged? 5. Are they really going to make a lifetime marriage committment this quickly because their jobs are just SOO important that they'll do anything to keep them?

If you are looking for a cute, light, fun summer read…Once Upon a Summertime might be just the book for you.

The author did a very good job of making me feel like a tourist to New York. I really felt like I was seeing the sights and I enjoyed the details of Anna and Sean’s treks around the city. I also felt that I learned a lot about the hotel industry and all the little details that must be taken care of to offer true hospitality .

I liked Anna and Sean, but didn’t get very connected with them. I thought the overall storyline was cute and was happy that it was clean and sweet. Everything was from Anna’s perspective, which surprised me. I kept wanting to hear Sean’s thoughts, as well! But, on the other hand, this way of storytelling did keep Sean’s feelings as more of a surprise to Anna and myself. Some things toward the end of the story did feel rushed to me, but I still enjoyed the book.

My thanks to Revell for the complimentary copy of this book that I received in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t think I’ve read a more vague book ever. The main character Anna is so self absorbed, selfish and ignorant that it’s really hard to like her. She went with the guy at Ellis Island and “knew” she had something immigrant in her even tho she didn’t, so much so that she even teared up? Huh? As an immigrant myself I find it laughable to compare her moving from a small town in USA to New York (with a set job and accommodation) with the struggles immigrants had upon moving from Ireland to the USA. I’m just happy Audiobooks refunded my book credit.

For someone who has a masters degree in hospitality and who wants to work in high-end hotels, the heroine seems very unsophisticated.

The New York setting is also very unrealistic.

Rather dull, with an incredibly abrupt and poorly thought-out ending.

Once Upon a Summertime – Melody Carlson

I first discovered Melody Carlson with her Dear Daphne series, and I am still hoping for a third book in that series to let me know what happened! When Once Upon a Summertime became available for review , I was jumping up and down with my hand up in the air screaming, “Pick me! Pick me!” Thanks, Revell!

What did I love about this book? Let me count the ways….
1. The main character, Anna, had a good head on her shoulders. She respected her grandmother, did hard things, was responsible, and loyal.
2. Although the story began in a small town, it quickly moved to NYC. NYC is one of my favorite places in the whole world. Granted I haven’t been around the whole world, but I love it there! I found have walked the neighborhoods in the book. LOVE IT! It was like a little getaway for me!
3. The male lead, Sean, was a little too good to be true. However, I did like him. Sean had a plan for just about everything. I do wish we could have had a glimpse of what was going on in his head!
4. Anna’s friend, Marley, got on my nerves! It was like she couldn’t make up her mind…be nice to Anna or be a little controlling. She did get it together, but I really didn’t like her! (To me, that is a sign of great writing – when I have strong opinions about minor characters!)
5. I loved the cover!
6. I was sad for the story to end!

I realize I didn’t reveal much about the story. You will have to read it yourself to get the details! You won’t be sorry!

Name your favorite variety of cheese and this book had it. Some of the phrases the characters said to each other were so bad, there's no chance a real adult would talk to another like that! I guess it was sweet but the ending... maaaajor abrupt eye roll.

Once Upon a Summertime was not at all what I expected! I didn't read the description prior to starting it, so I didn't know it was about hotel managers and a budding romance between them that ends up being forbidden due to them being coworkers.

A pleasant surprise to find that I actually really enjoyed this book and found the characters charming. :) I liked the ending, but things did seem to end a bit too fast.

All in all, a very good contemporary romance and I recommend it if you enjoy these novels. :)

I really wanted to give this a higher rating. I suppose it could be a 2.5. I try to reserve my 2-stars for books I just don't like, and my 3-stars are "just okay". 2.5 could be my "meh" rating.

This is my second book I've read by Carlson. I'm not sure I can compare the two because they both felt so different.

Let me start with the things I liked.

There are subtle mentions of God, and 2 or 3 times a blessing is said at mealtimes. The main character visits a church and thinks how her grandma would be happy that she visited it. I like a casual mention of the characters' beliefs and spirituality without a book getting preachy, more like the characters are just living their lives and religion is interwoven in their daily lives.

There is no profanity or descriptive sex, no promiscuity whatsoever.

I enjoyed reading about Anna and Sean setting her apartment up.

And... That's about it.

The book had a very slow start, and it was a slog through the middle. I felt like I was living a play by play, every day of Anna's life in the summer...

It took over half the book or so for Anna to even get to NYC, and most of the time once she's there we get a lot of job description with minimal description of interactions with other hotel employees, nor much interaction with roommates.

There was not a lot of character development or growth for either of the main characters or supporting characters. Very static.

The ending was horribly abrupt. Horribly. I had to turn the page a few times, asking myself, was that it?

And there were so many questions unanswered. Among them:

How are Anna and Sean going to save face at the hotel once they're engaged, after already having to fire employees for dating?

Why would she agree to marry someone she's only dated for about a month, especially when they kept trying to keep it at a friendship level?

What will happen to the apartment Sean just helped her furnish and set up? Will Marley be kicked out and sent to live with the other flight attendants in her old apartment? Will Anna and Sean live in that apartment?

How will Anna save face with Marley, especially after Marley showed so much interest in Sean, and Anna was quick to say they were just friends (over and over)?

Why did Anna think it was such a good idea to quit just after a month of working there, wrecking her resume in the process? What good would that have done?

I know there's more... I'll come back to it later...

Hmmm. {I start off many reviews like that…} While at first it started off pretty slow, but by the end it picked up and was overall decent. Definitely not Melody Carlson’s best, though. I really liked Anna, but Sean was just a little too perfect. I also would have liked to seen more Spiritual Content.

I am so blessed to be able to read Melody Carlson's latest novel Once Upon a Summertime, before the closure of summer for me. What an incredible series this is going to be and I can't wait for the next novel in this series! For those looking for an exceptional romance, pick this one up! You won't be disappointed.

Anna Gordon has always had a heart for hospitality, and thus the reason for getting her degree in hotel management. Having lived a rough childhood, living on the streets at times, she relished those moments when they would find a place to stay in a motel. She tried her best at those times, to make it the best it good be, despite what her parents did, and the very reason why she had such a desire for those guests that would come to a place to stay, wanting to ensure that it was truly a great experience.

Yet she never dreamed after all those years of attending school, that she would wind up working at the Value Lodge and living on her grandmother's couch. While all her other friends, were busy living it up at exotic locations managing exceptional hotels, she was questioning if this is as good as her life would get. Was this what her degree would be used for? Not to mention that the Value Lodge was beyond run down and the employees lazy and without the same desire for seeing the potential of what could be. So when an offer to move to New York and help manage one of the high end newly renovated hotels becomes available, Anna believes God might just have a plan in mind if she is willing to place her faith in Him.

She meets a long time friend from home, Sean O'Neil, who most girls had crushes on in high school has now been appointed as the day manager. The two eventually realize that they need a friend while trying to make their way in an unfamiliar city, but if sparks begin to fly, they both could be out of a job when the hotel mandates a no romance or dating policy among it's employees or guests. But all Anna needs is a chance to prove herself worthy so she can move on to bigger and better goals and New York right now offers her the best chance at a new life, she had only dreamed of before.

I received Once Upon A Summertime by Melody Carlson compliments of Revell Publishing and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of the book for my honest and personal review. This was such a great novel, that I read it in one sitting. I was completely lost in the world of what it is like to manage a hotel, and being a huge dreamer of one day opening a Bed and Breakfast, this one will appealed to me. Readers even get a sneak peek at the second novel in this series, even though it is unnamed at this time, I can't wait to add this one to my personal collection at home. For me, this one well deserves all 5 out of 5 stars.

My Rating 1.5 stars

"Oh, she knew the odds were stacked against her, but it didn't cost anything to entertain a dream."

Anne is managing a small motel in her hometown and living on her grandma's sofa. Not exactly how she thought her career would be going. She's afraid to leave though, not just because of little comments her grandma makes, but also because she feels like she has accomplished nothing for the past few years.
When she see's an old friend though everything starts changing for the better and she just might start living out one of her dreams.

"It was just a stopping place until you were ready for the next stage in your life. Of course, I love having you here. I will miss you. But I never want to stand in the way of your dreams."
With a little encouragement from Grandma and her friend, she takes the risk and hopes it pays off.

I had such high hopes for this book, and by the last few chapters, they were all crushed. This is supposed to be a clean new adult romance book. One of the things we all know I was looking for, and while it is clean and in the new adult age range. The problems that this book has are so many that I just can't give it a good rating. Melody Carlson used to be one of my favorites authors when it comes to her YA books, sadly when it comes to her adult books they always leave me disappointed.
The problems I have with this one is the romance part I was okay with it and thought it was going at a nice and normal pace until the last few pages of the book. *see Spoilers at the end.

This also brought to my attention some of the things the love interest that he should have done. Not only does he take Anne's idea (yes he says it was hers, but still they either should have told them together, or he could have just let her tell it). Not to mention, he just walks into her apartment multiple times without her knowing he was even there!
I also didn't like how Anna seemed to shame the way the flight attendants acted on their time off.

I have the third book in the series through NetGalley so I'm going to try and read that and if I don't like it either then I think I'm just going to stop reading Carlson's Adult novels.

Managing the Value Lodge in her hometown was not what Anna Gordon had in mind when she set out in the hospitality industry. But it’s a safe choice for a woman whose childhood was anything but stable. Out of the blue, she gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to reinvent herself by moving to New York City, where she hopes for a management position at a stylish new boutique hotel. The big city is full of surprises–not the least of which is Sean O’Neil. Her childhood crush has applied for the very same position!

Sweet, romantic, and endlessly entertaining, this romp through the storied streets of New York City will enchant readers. Melody Carlson has created characters so charming that readers will long to meet them in the lobby of the stunning Rothsberg Hotel.

Once Upon A Summertime is a fun, fresh, flirty story that is absolutely perfect for your summer reading! The quirky characters and interesting storyline makes this story a very refreshing read.

I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous to read this book. It was my first real “New Adult” contemporary romance in a long time. I’ve stuck to mostly YA lately. So when this book arrived, I was a little scared as to how I would like it. I’m also not the biggest contemporary fan, so that added to my feelings.

But I must say, I wasn’t disappointed in it.

The storyline was, as I said above, fun, fresh, and flirty. Here’s why-

Fun- The characters were very well-written and captivating. The protagonist, Anna, was a very likable character. She felt relatable and real. Plus I loved the fun setting of NYC. Hearing about the different sights and places around the city was fun, and it kinda felt like I was there.

Fresh- I have read a good amount of contemporaries. They have never been my favorite genre, but, if written correctly, they can be enjoyed. I felt like Melody did a great job keeping this story surprising and cute. It was a little cheesy at times, but most contemporary’s are.

Flirty- I loved how the romance was new and adorable. It wasn’t overly serious or forced. It was young love that grew sweeter throughout the story.

One thing that I am unhappy about is the ending. The ending felt forced and abrupt. I felt like Melody could have written a much sweeter and more satisfying ending.

I do recommend this book! I think it is especially great to read during the summer. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, out in 2016!

Melody Carlson is one of my absolute favorite authors! In fact, I have been following her books since I was in middle/high school. The Diary of a Teenage Girl series were the very first novels that I have ever read from her. When Revell offered up her latest for review, I jumped up and down excited that I would have the opportunity. Once Upon a Summertime is the very first book of her brand new series entitled Follow Your Heart. Anna Gordon starts out managing the Value Lodge, a small and not the most the exciting motel, in her hometown Springville. It’s a very safe choice for a young woman who is starting out her career, but as years go by, she feels stuck. Out of the blue, she gets the exciting opportunity to step forward into her career by moving to New York City where she applies for a management position at a fancy, stylish hotel called The Rothsberg. Coming from a small town, the city comes with many new challenges and lessons. What happens when Sean O’Neil, a once-upon-a-time crush, applies for the same position? You’ll walk through the streets alongside the characters in New York City.

It isn’t the best book on earth, but it certainly wasn’t the worst either. I had trouble connecting with the characters who seemed like they were too perfect. Neither of them made any mistakes. Sean O’Neil seems to be an overly perfect gentleman. He doesn’t even enter the story until around page 100. The ending is also quite abrupt. Instead of dating and spending time to get to know each other, it ends with a marriage proposal after just a few days of getting to know each other. I think there could have been a better solution.

What I really liked about the book is that Anna was willing to take on a new challenge, something that we all struggle with. She is a very hard worker and will keep going even when life throws curve balls and she wants to give up. If you like light, cheesy romances, then this is probably a suggested read for you.

Note: I received a copy of this book from Revell’s Blog Tour Program for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

Title: ONCE UPON A SUMMERTIME: A New York City Romance
Author: Melody Carlson
Publisher: Revell
June 2015
ISBN 978-0800723576
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Follow Your Heart #1

She's looking for her big break. She never imagined it would depend on a blast from her past.

Managing the Value Lodge in her hometown was not what Anna Gordon had in mind when she set out in the hospitality industry. But it's a safe choice for a young woman starting out her career.

Then, out of the blue, she gets the opportunity of a lifetime: a chance to reinvent herself and reinvigorate her career by moving to New York City. She applies for a management position at a stylish new hotel, The Rothsberg. But the city is full of surprises--not the least of which is discovering that Sean O'Neil, a once-upon-a-time crush, has applied for the very same position.

This sweetly romantic tale of dreams come true takes you through the storied streets of New York City--and into the depths of the human heart.

ONCE UPON A SUMMERTIME is the first book in this series by award-winning author, Melody Carlson. Ms. Carlson has her own distinct style of writing, and this fits right in with her voice. I liked that it was contemporary and a romance and that the characters knew each other beforehand. It gave more credibility to the romance. I also liked that Anna was forced out of her comfort zone.

The story was very predictable. I knew what would happen before it did. Anna made a terrible mistake at the motel she was managing, though I know why she did. I also knew it would backfire. I was a bit surprised Marley was as accepting about Sean all things considered. The characters were rather one dimensional and the story was more told than shown. I think Ms. Carlson could’ve fleshed it out a bit more. It’s like she has so many irons in the fire they are getting a lick and a promise and not panning out.

Still, the premise was good, and it was a contemporary romance.

4 stars. Available in print, hardcover, and ebook. 320 pages.

I obtained this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Once Upon A Summertime by Melody Carlson follows the story of Anna, a manager at an inexpensive motel who dreams of working in a bigger hotel. After some tension with her current employers and a run-in with an old friend, Anna ends up with a chance to work at a boutique hotel - in New York! She leaves everything she already knows and heads to the Big Apple, and is surprised when she finds herself working at the same hotel as an old high school classmate. As sparks fly, Anna and Sean struggle with the hotel’s “no employee relationships” policy. How will they work it out? I started this book, and I did not want to put it down! Anna’s character was likable, and the development of the romance was sweet. What I really appreciated about this book was how the author wove in the character’s family relationships dynamics, friendship dynamics, and work dynamics into an interesting story. The interactions and stresses that Anna had to go through weren’t over the top or outrageous - all her struggles were very believable. I really enjoyed this book! The only thing I didn’t like about it was that I felt the the storyline was wrapped up too quickly in the end - it literally goes from having nothing resolved to everything figured it out within one chapter. I felt like the book could have had ten more chapters to really focus on resolving and developing more of the problems and relationships, and even with that many more chapters the book wouldn’t have felt too long. As it is, the end felt very haphazard and hurried to me. I liked the way it ended, but I think it would have gotten a solid five stars from me if it wasn’t so rushed. Regardless, I loved the storyline and imagery in this book, and it made me want to visit New York! I think Once Upon A Summertime would be a great pool or vacation read - fun, and just the right amount of drama. Definitely check it out! Note: I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher in exchange for this review. This is my honest opinion.

A whirlwind romance in the heart of New York City? I'm in!

Carlson does an amazing job as tour guide and I actually felt I had visited the Big Apple once I'd finished the book. Armchair traveling is so much fun. Once Upon a Summertime offers a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes action of the hospitality industry and the author infuses such wonderful descriptions that starkly contrast the Value Lodge and the NYC boutique hotel. Really pulled me into the ambiance of the story.

Unique for a romance, Carlson chose to tell the story through the heroine's point of view only and I have to admit to missing the opportunity to get to know Sean better (since I couldn't get inside his head.) In fact, we aren't even introduced to him until 100 pages in, which is also unusual for a romance.

This is really a story about Anna's quest to find her way after family obligations sidetrack her career ambitions in hotel management. A few unexpected circumstances propel her into a daring journey of self-discovery -- and into the arms of the perfect man. I loved the developing romance and the issues that put Anna and Sean at odds with each other but I did feel the ending (including the resolution to their conflict) was rushed. I would have loved another fifty pages more!

All in all, a sweet, light-hearted summer romance that will have you hankering for a visit to New York City.

Another winner from Melody Carlson! I was so excited when I heard Melody Carlson was coming out with a new contemporary series. Luckily, I was able to get my hands on a review copy and dive head first into the Follow Your Heart series! Book 1 is called Once Upon a Summertime and centers on Anna Gordon, who has a less-than-fulfilling career and not much else of which to speak. Following a series of events and decisions, Anna winds up in New York City to interview for her dream job. While this story has definite fairy-tale tendencies, it's not a fairy tale. Anna faces ups and downs in her new city, including a new romance. New York City itself is a main character in this story and has as much a part in the romance as the actual couple. Carlson's descriptions of the city left me wanting to visit more than any other book has. If you've been to NYC, you'll be itching to go back. If you haven't been (like me!), you'll be dying to plan a trip! The setting, characters, and plot are both inviting and envy-worthy. While the ending feels a bit rushed and possibly too easy, it's well worth the read. Highly recommended for fans of NYC, romance, and Melody Carlson's other works. I can't wait for the next book in the Follow Your Heart series!

I fantasized about being a successful woman in the big city. My older sister is sure it was the influence of watching Mary Tyler Moore on television.

So upon reading the summary on NetGalley for Once Upon a Summertime -- wholesome gal leaves small town to make it big in the big city and find love -- I thought it would be a nice, fun, quick read.

It wasn't quite as quick as the writing was stuffed to the gills with name-dropping descriptors (unartfully name dropping that the heroine looks like Nicole Kidman and the hero looks like Ryan Reynolds, Cole Haan loafers, Nine West black heels, etc.) or fun with its lengthy-stilted dialogue.

As the story was hampered by some dull writing, it also lacked depth to keep me engaged. This story took me months to get through because I lost interest. Additionally, I just didn't think much of the main character who kept finding herself to be worth less than others because she did not have a lot of work experience. Readers know this is not the case because she is a decent person with good instincts. It would've been nice if others helped her realize that or tell her and not just agree with her woe-is-me story that this job will help her career.

In the end, I skimmed to get to the inevitable ending because I tired of the poor writing quality.
