I can't believe it's over. The Warhammer old world series is actually over. And honestly, I'm more surprised they actually pulled it off in such a great way. This book is amazing! In fact, the entire End Times series and their tie ins are amazing with the exception of Deathblade which was kind of a letdown.
All throughout the series, I kept asking myself two questions.
1- how is this going to end?
2- what comes next?
To answer the first question they busted out one of their top tier writers. I don't think Reynolds has published a bad book in his life. And he outdid himself in this one.
As to what comes next, Age Of Sigmar books is actually pretty awesome too.
The Good Stuff
- I was right, I called it back in the Fall Of Altdorf. Sigmas is back and he's not taking any shit. I love how he interacts with the other gods and just his whole demeanour in this novel.
- This book is like avengers assemble type thing on both sides. We got Nagash, Malekith the Everqueen, Tyrion, Sigmar, Angela Fleischer, Brunner the Bounty Hunter, Wulfrik the Wanderer, Valnir, Victor Goetz, Kairos Fateweaver, Thanquol, The Red Duke. The list goes on they all get a little screen time. Not just in it for a line or two but not enough to steal the show. It's great for those of us who gave read most of the Warhammer novels because I found myself thinking, I know this guy but from what book? Great job.
- If anything this book touched on the nature of evil. Sigmar all but calls out Archaon and tells him that he put himself where he is. No one else. No gods. No men. No one. It was your own action that brought you here, you have no one to blame but yourself. Which was just awesome because reading the Archaon books I kind of felt the same, has Archaon tried to walk a different path things would have been different? As Sigmar himself said 'it could have been you standing here saving humanity' or something along those lines and hes right. Even the great additional character of Kanto Unsworn even says the same. Did you even try to walk a different path? Or did you just accept this as destiny and blame all the gods rather than try and change it. Remember Archaon is still human, a sword will kill him as easily as the next man. He could even have chosen to kill himself. He didn't. He just went along with the chaos gods and blamed everyone for all his trouble. Just a pathetic man who ran to another god because he didn't get the answers from the one he originally served.
- Kanto was a great addition to this book this guy went to chaos because that deemed his destiny but chose not to do anything to get their attention because he knew what comes to those who sell their soul. And when he finally meets his end it was on his terms. Let the gods fight over his soul. If they can catch him 😅
Reading these 5 books and their respective tie ins was an absolute pleasure. One day when I re-read the books on my bookcases and read them all one after the over. I am really going to enjoy reading these again.
Finale worthy of the name delivering it - Archaeon Everchosen. Though there're certain inconsistencies in the storyline, I'm aware that WH lore is vast and can't fit into the lenght of the single book. However, the progress from an ordinary man, an outcast and a general dissapointment, to a supreme Lord of Chaos, destroyer of the world, devourer of life, was made in a fluid, skilled writing, delivering the most elementary feature of the WH - the War. With the big, capital W. It has it all... epic battles melted into one huge bloodshed where no one and nothing was spared, a great characters and their flow of thoughts explained in theatrical ways, the atmosphere, emotions, and the feeling of uncertainty for the future of the world. The author succeded in attempt to summon the air of the Warhammer as it was intended by playing the tabletop wargame. Or it is just me :) I haven't played for years now, and these books evoked the memmories of some past times when everything was different, more simpler. Well, not so much for the Empire :)
As if Abhorash or The Red Duke or W'Soran would not have come to fuck Archaon up if not him personally then definitely his army. And also telling me the combine might arrayed against Archaon could not defeat him??? NAGASH ALONE COULD HAVE DONE THIS!!!!!! Not to mention he had the Arkhan the Black with him he would have destroyed Archaon and his host and would have reanimated them all. If anything this should have been the ultimate ascension of Nagash to master of the world with all the death going on. Finally this whole "endless chaos horde" shit is very dull and completely ruins the story even for a shits and giggles read. Fuck the end times...
This series is all pretty good individually, but as a whole, it's pretty lame. Aside from the obvious, characters just sort of drop in and out and occasionally, you'll get an info dump where it's like, "Hey. Your favorite character was actually killed in a footnote in some supplementary rule book that is no longer in print."
This story is a beautifully written by Joshua Reynolds and ends Games Workshop's long run fantasy world. I loved this book (although it is a little sad knowing it is the last book in a long series) and it's a must for people who have read the other End Times books.
Back in February I bolded stated I would try and read every end times story by the end of that month. It did not happen. I am glad for that actually as it was more enjoyable to read this series slowly throughout the year. It's a bold thing to kill off your fantasy world. It was quite something to constantly read about the various characters and places dying. Especially those from my faction. A nice ending to the old world. You will be missed my sweet prince.
I really enjoyed reading this. Seemed to finish it in next to no time. Though not my favourite book in the end times series (that would probably go to Nagash ) it definitely left me satisfied.
The fifth and final installment of the end of the Warhammer world, its a very shocking read considering all these major characters I've been reading about for years are gathering and meeting one another. At first, I was taken aback by how quickly some named characters were taken out. But it being the End Times and all, its nice to see that some of them even got a mention in the book, like a favorite of mine, Erkhart Dubnitz. I can see how some people think their favorite characters aren't getting the proper send off, but there's only so much space in this book. Josh Reynolds continues to be one of my favorite Warhammer authors, his original characters stack up next to the likes of Nagash and Sigmar. Sorry, I just finished the book not 5 minutes ago and Im still floundering a bit. Its a fitting end to a series and I can't wait for the new world of Warhammer to come.
When Volker had to leave his knight friends and the hidden Tilean wine! When Jerrod lay broken by threads of fate and daemon hammer! When Lileath sacrificed herself for the teleportation spell and as she fade, she comfort Teclis! When Canto say "whose truth" and Archaon twitched! When Canto the most sane chaos warrior at last chase the flying turtle WHEN HE DIED! When Hammerson say "I wish Ungrim's here," and the essence of Snorri reply "He is here," and all the spirit of dead dwarf appear! When Vlad died with Isabella! WHEN THE WORLD ENDS! and there's a hint it's restarting!

The fifth Black Library novel to accompany the Warhammer End Times background books, Josh Reynolds’ The Lord of the End Times finishes the series off on a high note, as the events of the End Times reach their inevitable conclusion. It follows the few remaining mortal heroes as they battle to survive against the endless hordes of Archaon, harnessing their powers and attempting to work together despite age-old grievances. From the streets of Middenheim to the glades of Athel Loren and back again, the Incarnates and their allies fight not just for their own survival, but for that of the world itself. As this is the End Times, things look bleak.
Worse novel about the Warhammer world since Trollslayer. Gives very little extra compared to the The End Times book https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... and even that little is written in the way of a sidenote. The battles are way too simplified and still boring. Just utterly bad novel.
5 Stars. The End Times. Armageddon. Ragnarok. Eschaton. End Of The World Party and Everyone's On The Guest List. The Games's Over.... So What's Next???
