If we have learned anything during the past two years of the Global Pandemic, it's that we need people. We were not meant to live life alone. God has created us to be relational. Finding friends can be difficult. How do we find people we can trust enough to let them into the deep parts of our lives? Jennie Allen's new book, Find Your People answers that question. She gives us the tools to find those people who will enrich our lives and make us better, stronger humans as a result. Jennie is real about the struggle of the being new kid and trying to Find Your People. With a strong Biblical foundation, she invites us to the challenge of being awkward and vulnerable to find the people we were meant to do life with. It's a hard challenge - a rewarding challenge. One that is definitely worth taking on.

Jennie writes with passion and conviction, out of her personal experience. She is very relatable and opens up her heart in a way that I found very familiar. I've moved a lot and often found myself at a loss for friends, waiting for someone else to initiate a conversation. As an adult, and introvert, it is still a challenge to break in to well-established groups. Find Your People is exactly the book I've needed to help be the right kind of friend and to find the right kind of friends. Thanks Jennie!

This didn’t do it for me. A found a lot of the studies were like “write down some questions and throw them down at the table with your friends” and well, I’m reading this book because I don’t have any… soo.

I felt like the videos were a lot of low key bragging about her great life and great circle of friends. A lot of talking to say nothing.

“The ache of loneliness is real, it doesn’t have to be part of your reality.” It took a village to raise a Savior! Immanuel–God’s very name suggests proximity and relationship! In this seven-session video-included Bible study experience Find Your People, Jennie Allen’s goal is that God would get bigger and that readers would see a new way to do life with others. Women are not walls and we are called to walk around them together until they fall.

As an introvert, community sounded like one of the nine circles of Dante’s Inferno, but Jennie presented it as an invitation into the five tastes of heaven! Proximity is a fire around which we gather for warmth barriered by busyness. Open doors of transparency break down the walls of pain/shame. Accountability is an anvil on which we slay our pride. Shared purpose is the shovel we use to excavate the superficial–shallow/small talk. “The ultimate table of reconciliation has been set on the broken body and spilled blood of our Savior.” But consistency compels us to stay as the antidote to stray.

“You will disappoint me. I will disappoint you. God will never disappoint us.” (I need this as wall art in my apartment!) “You can never be at peace with other people disappointing you…until you realize you need that grace…as much as they do…To love those who are not like us and who are not perfectly healthy good friends to us…is one of the greatest callings of our lives.” Christians are Christ clothed in scars and skin; the Great Commission is a daily discipline. Accountability is inviting someone to serve as a sharpener to the spiritual pencil of our soul! So get off your hiney, Find Your People and give God away: that’s my summer vibe!

Finished this Bible study this week. I personally wouldnt really call it a Bible study. I mean there were verses in it, very short passages she had you read, and she did base her thoughts off of the Bible, but only one or two short verses per chapter. There WAS deep personal reflection. I really liked when I read the actual book... this just seems to be like the book but with videos of her talking with space for you to think about and write your thoughts about what she wants you to do. I do believe it would be beneficial to do with others, though I think it would be hard if you are reading the book to "find your people" to find people willing to go that deep at first. If you already have "some people" and want to go deeper with them this would be the perfect book. Especially for young moms without a lot of time for deep study. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I feel like this was a very surface level Bible study. I read the book a couple years ago and felt the same way, but was hopeful the study portion would be the missing piece that brought it all together. The study focuses on the ‘why’ you need to find you people, but not the ‘how.’ If you have friends and are looking to deepen you’re relationships with them, this could be your book. If you’re looking for a ‘how to,’ I would not recommend. As far as bible study, I didn’t love the organization or lack there of. I’m used to have 5 days of “homework” and then the video session. If you’re looking for something shorter/less involved, this could be the book for you. Not necessarily a terrible book, just not for me.

This study was helpful as a facilitator. The projects in this book are also in the FYP book in several chapters. For leading a group it was helpful to have, but if I had to pick one resource for group members, I’d pick for them to have the FYP book, not the study guide.
There is a portion for each week where there is a Bible study, that was enjoyable.
On a practical note, the study guide needed a bunch more copy editing. Some chapters have “his” not capitalized, and some have “His” capitalized. One chapter has the word “too” when it should have been “to”. There’s some abbreviations that are assumed to be widely understood, but aren’t—internet lingo. The final thing I noticed was in the week 7 Bible study it says to read Matthew 29. There isn’t a Matthew 29.

I attended this study at the request of a friend.
While I enjoyed the community, I didn't resonate with a lot of this.
It just reminded me how fortunate I am to have amazing women in my corner (believers and non-believers).

This was just ok.
Didn't expect much from the study and I didn't get much.

The book itself is probably somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. It has some really good points but it’s more of a wave top study. However, the accompanying videos and the small group discussions made me round it up because the whole package was much better than the book itself. I would not have enjoyed the book as much by itself but I would recommend it for a small group study.

Friendship Goals

I love this study guide so much. I have learned how to be a better friend and that it's okay to need people. I have found my people. God has blessed me with Godly community.

Thoroughly enjoyed it! Read within a book club. I loved the ideas and strategies offered for forming community. I think it’s a great guideline for attempting to develop community. Of course each persons’ location and where they are in their lives plays a significant role.

This was such a great study. Easy to complete, good challenging projects each week that I hope to keep working through post study. Would definitely encourage anyone to do this with just one other person, a small group or their church

You basically get the entire understanding of this study within the first three chapters. The rest is extremely repetitive, and has a culty feel to it. I struggle to understand why this book is so popular. Not my cup of tea.

The book itself was meh. Lots of good nuggets but some parts weren’t very cohesive. Doing the study in community though? Definitely worth it! We took what we wanted from the study and developed some beautiful relationships in the meantime.

As an introvert I’ve never thought about the importance of community nor did I even think about how it was backed biblically! I LOVED this! Very eye opening!

A fun and inspiring study done with my small group in the pandemic. It changed how I approach my neighbors for the better, now I have friends in the neighborhood.

A little bit too much religious talk for me - not because I dislike that, it is just I am not religious (yet) and I found a bit hard to resonate with.
It is a little bit too much repetitions.

I really enjoyed this honest look at how to build family and connection in a world that discourages people from being anything less than perfect. A lot of useful information.

I would highly recommend this bible study guide for both individual study and a group setting! Jennie Allen has such a relatable way of writing while sharing her own struggles and scripture that has helped her grow. She does a great job of creating spaces in this study for reflection on scripture and attainable challenges to grow in your relationships.
