"For the Word of Wool shall rise from the Amazon, In the final year of this Earth, And all shall see it, But instead they see their End." - Ancient Mayan Stone Tablet
Hugh Howey, the author of the best selling sci-fi series Wool, comes to Australia in late 2012 to promote the Random House print of his most famous work.
His fans, loyal beyond sanity, take a minor slight against him to be an unforgivable insult and are driven to madness. Soon the virus -- the love of Wool -- spreads across southern Australia, consuming all who come into contact with the gripping tale.
Evan Wright, an EMT with the state emergency service, leads a small group of people out of Sydney in an ambulance. Their only weapon is a single shotgun and a box of shells.
The first day there were ten survivors packed into the ambulance. Within days there were just three.
So the three head west. Always west, towards South Australia... but the Woolies, the unthinking minions of Hugh, grow beyond counting.
And they have a plan.
A short post-apocalyptic horror/comedy fanfiction about the fans of Hugh Howey's Wool, soon to be based on a true story.
I've always been writing in my mind. I have way, way, way too many stories to tell and far too little time to tell them.
I've been involved in Star Trek roleplay-by-emails for a few years, where basically I learned my craft, but it's only last year that I actually started putting these thoughts to paper.
By day I'm a software engineer. But by night I write a little science fiction, a little fantasy, a little humour and comedy, and a little erotica under pen names.
I loved Hugh Howey's Wool so when I saw this fan fiction piece on Amazon I had to try it. The subject seemed interesting and it was so short I figured I didn't have anything to lose. I won't say that I am glad or regretful for reading this. It just might have been one of the most bleh stories I've ever read. I didn't really care what happened to the characters or anything and was just very underwhelmed when the story was over. For Wool being such an amazing story I was kind of bummed that the fan fiction was so boring. I've never really enjoyed fan fiction but I thought since Wool was so amazing that the fan fiction couldn't be that bad. Well now I remember why I don't like the genre. It feels contrived and redundant and I just have a really hard time taking it for what it is and in the appropriate context; as in a story that was created because of someone's love and interest in an existing story that moved them in some way.
This is just my opinion so I would definitely say that if you enjoy or at least don't mind fan fiction (and you liked Wool) you will like this story.
I read this story wondering just what the SILO is wrong with the main character. How in the name of HOLSTON does he live on the same continent as David Adams and not know about WOOL? I thought everyone within an hour's flight at MACH 3 of this author knew about WOOL just from the sheer - er, shear - intensity of his daily recitations of the OMNIBUS. This is the only part of the story that is completely unrealistic. Besides that, I am sure that fans of WOOL, Mr. Howey, and Mr. Adams (or as he privately demands to be addressed, Mr. Adams-Howey) will place this work among the other crown JULES in their collections of fine literature.
This is fan fiction but not in the world of Wool. This is our world with Woolies taking it over. Guilty! I am one of those ravenous creatures and I enjoyed being called out. I'm glad someone can make light of our insane obsession.
