Deep in Appalachian coal country, Ella grows up hard at the hands of her abusive, alcoholic father. After high school, she's asked out on her very first date, and it ends in rape. Then she meets Paul, the man she will marry -- and the real trouble begins. Each time Ella is knocked down she gets up a little stronger and a bit more twisted. Eventually rage takes over and it's her turn to call the dance. In her mind, several people need payback, and she's going all out to settle up.
I read this after it had been reviewed by us as i had a discussion about language and i have to say that i was so hooked i couldn't put it down, literally reading it in 24 hours. Written in 3rd person the author gets into the mind of most of the characters, but above every one is the voice of Ella.Ella suffers an awful life through the hands of others and some of the scenes should be disturbing, but they tie in with the story of Ella's life. Set in mostly Kentucky, the dialog has a southern drawl to it, but this is not complex to read and adds to the characters and their likability. Really loved this book and cant wait to read more from John :)
I started and finished this book in one day. It captured me from page one and loved the twist it took. Most of the time revenge is wrong but sometimes it's very sweet.
An excellent thriller - Ella is abused throughout her life, and when she finally breaks - things get interesting. Inspired by a true story, with some liberties taken. Definitely a fictionalized ending.
