When asked how to cultivate habits of deep thinking for the purpose of delighting in God, John Piper said to read the great dead Puritan writers. A steady diet of these authors, he said, would go a long way in cultivating a deeply joyful mind set and drive us back to the word of God. I found that advice to be so helpful and completely true as I read this book. Although a challenging read because of the old English, I still heartily recommend it especially in our day and age when so much can be discouraging. William Bridge has an almost humorous way of responding to reasons that can weigh us down. Genuine Christianity, he says, has so many truths to keep us from discouragement. The question is whether we will set our eyes upon these promises and hold fast to them.
