I’m very impressed with this book, particularly considering the genre. Most “modern warfare” books are stuffed with bad language- often even when the characters are not in stressful situations. This book was squeaky clean in comparison, humorous at times, written with heart and humility and very engaging stories! Horrifying when they are nearly over run by the enemy but because of the Rules Of Engagement nearby aircraft could not help them out. I looked up Nicholas Irving online and found an interview where he was crying while discussing this particular battle- you don’t often see that much emotion from a warrior- it made it clearer to me how utterly terrified they must have been. Haven’t finished it yet but we’re getting close. (Audio version- narrator is great!) I would definitely recommend for those interested in these types of books!
Another great book depicting the battles in Afghanistan and more specifically as a Ranger sniper. Nick Irving provides us lots of detail and insight into the environment he had to work within. A quick read and definitely a page turner. Irv does a great job of sharing his emotions at home and in the field of battle. "There's a he and a me" explained it perfectly on how these heroes have to compartmentalize what goes on during war. I appreciate that he was willing to share his experiences and it's great to see him on Shawn Ryan and other podcasts explaining his trade. Finally, I also like the fact that he continues to write via fiction.
