Title: All Quiet on Arrival (Brock and Poole #9)
Author: Graham Ison
A-Z Author: I for Ison
Format: hardcover, local library
Rating: *** three out of five stars

Neighbors call police about a loud party in a quiet neighborhood. When they arrive, the party is already over and the apparent hosts answer the door and apologize for the noise. The police record
"All quiet on Arrival" in their log. Later that night, the fire company comes to the same address to put out a blaze and a dead woman is discovered in a back room. The owner of the house knows nothing about the party, the fire or the dead woman. Brock and Poole investigate.

This is a police procedural set in Chelsea, England. Not too gruesome. I grabbed it because the author's name started with "I" and it was under 200 pages. If you like police procedurals, you may like the book more than I did. For me, it was another waiting in line book.

I recently discovered Graham Ison's wonderful books. Read Hardcastle's Armistice and loved it then picked up All Quiet on Arrival thinking it was another Hardcastle book and discovered the Brock and Poole books. Most of what I read is Nordic Noir and British police procedurals. While this book and the Hardcastle book I read lack the Midsommer Murders cozy charm, there is a Just the Facts, Ma'am honesty to them. I appreciate the more true-to-life approach. No games, just a very well-told story with a satisfying ending. Very refreshing. I look forward to reading more.

I got the first copy at a library sale in mid-Wisconsin, but sight reading is a problem for me, so I was delighted when it went on audio sale! I had read the first few chapters but went back to the beginning and was glad that I did.
It was great reading about professional law enforcement that was not in LA or NYC but on the snooty neighborhoods of London and even to the Outback of Western Australia as they did a lot more than due diligence on this VERY convoluted group of murder investigations.
Narration by Damian Lynch was very Jack Webb/Joe Friday, and that's a good thing!

I've read a lot of murder mysteries, but I don't think I've ever done a "police procedural" and now I know why - they're boring (at least this one was). I felt like it was just interviewing one person after another and trying to find the next person to talk to. There was no suspense or action. I didn't care for any of the characters because none of them felt as if they'd been developed. I skimmed the book and have no desire to try another.

If you like stories about the British police (and I do) you will like this one. The police naturally do a lot of plodding when solving a case but I like that it is not too drawn out in this one. Reminds me a little of the Ed McBain 87th Precinct series. Also, there is a bit of information on Australian police work involved. Great reading.

This is an okay police procedure mystery but I found it just too wordy and too many suspects. Although you could predict the ending shortly after the story began. The characters are flat and not that interesting although the plot itself is good.

Tried to listen to the audiobook but couldn’t get on with it at all. Very critical and detailed of police procedures without developing characters. I prefer Val McDermids audiobooks

Short little procedural. Nothing to write home about but a good in between book.
