A part of me hates to do this, but there's no point forcing something if I'm not feeling it - so I'm dropping this around the halfway point.

There's nothing wrong with it, and I'd say that most readers who enjoyed the first book will also enjoy this one. For me, while this is a hybrid gamelit/system apocalypse/cultivation story, it reads more like a cultivation story than a gamelit story, with all that entails. And I've never been the biggest fan of cultivation stories. I sometimes enjoy them despite their nature.

The pacing is so slow that I don't have the patience for it. That might raise an eyebrow from some readers because there are undeniably many action scenes, but for me, pacing relies more on disturbance than it does pure action. While there are numerous fights, most don't feel important in the grand scheme of things.

I'm much busier nowadays than I used to be, so I can't afford to simmer for 400 pages in between worthwhile scenes. I need something to snack on every 30-50 pages to hold me over while waiting for the main course.

The monkey side character Brock is a better protagonist than the actual protagonist 😂. Jack is split between a foolish brave muscle brain , a supposed phd that barely has the aptitude to participate in tic tac toe or a prostrating doormat anytime he has to deal with someone a few levels above himself. If only he could pick 1 character type and stick to it…..

Edgar the decent underdog character in the last book turned into a whining wimp. Gan sailen is so bland I forgot he was in the book.

The world is decent, but there needs to be more safe zones where the protagonist actually gets to experiences his gains rather than thrown from one challenge to another.

It’s so close to being good series😩, I think that’s what makes it so frustrating…

stereotypes aren’t cool, SPOILER WaRNING

TL;DR good premise, Poor execution. boring villains, generic tropes, not the worst book I’ve ever read.

Interesting premise, if a somewhat basic main character. Fight scenes exciting- though it seems this protagonist is setting up to be the flawless archetype of main character; OP, perfect foundation, maximum efficacy of stats, etc.

at the end of the day, this book FEELS like it was written by an old hermit- in all the wrong ways. Character descriptions include ‘with his slanted eyes’- referencing a character of Asian descent. Beyond the tactless stereotyping, descriptions- whether of characters, scenes, or settings, feel bland and uninspired- more along the lines of a text or DM than a book. Ex: ‘it was the realest thing he ever saw.’ Why not use that in dialogue and actually tell the reader something useful?

I felt Gan Salin’s carácter and arc were well written. His addition to the story was jarring, but the dude is insane so I’ll let it slide.

The character whose arc was NOT fulfilling was Edgar. He too had an interesting premise: orphan of abusive parents, whose PTSD has led them to social isolation with the Dao. But his scenes just seem dramatic rather than inspiring or emotional.

Other times, the book simply follows common tropes. Barbarian girl? Why NOT make her half naked. Oh and make her the chief’s daughter as well. Thankfully, it’s rarely mentioned- outside of strange descriptions like ‘furs covering her privates,’ which, in light of the grim premise, really threw off my immersion. On this one, it felt like there were two options: don’t write a scantily clad female character, or skimp on the descriptive details. Instead, this book could PROBABLY make it into school libraries in Florida or Utah.

All in all this book felt half baked. Scenes could have been workshopped to be more descriptive, but they remained generic and unremarkable. The plot was incredibly predictable and I never felt like the protagonist was in any danger. If any of the villainous or unaligned characters were interesting, instead of simple storybook evil, I might not have noticed. Pure evil can be well written, but these villains seem to just be pieces of garbage and evil just by nature. There are no tragic backstories, hidden motives, intrigue- or at least, only for the good guys.

Brock is… something. On the one hand, he seems alive in a way the rest of the cast often doesn’t. On the flip side, after seeing the author’s description of Asian features, I am hesitant to enjoy this character.

Some of the setups look to have promising payoffs- Vlossana’s newfound power and hatred, the Black Hole Church, Edgar vs. Petrovich. Concerned the story will fumble the bag again.

Maybe I’m just a hater, I really didn’t hate this book but several parts left a bad taste in my mouth. Most of all I was frustrated because of the work that goes into a go setup, and how much potential the payoffs wasted.

Stick and Move

Unlike many cultivation genre authors it doesn't get bigger down too much is side character stories by using short update overviews giving us task, results and brief context. Also, training montages and noting that time passes dominate the MC rise to power. Combat and insights are done, but without wasting an entire chapter on painfully detailed over thinking of a tiny insight.
Seriously, the slow painful development of OP MCs through a rank taking more than one book when anyone of consequence can kill the MC with a look or harsh language is a waste in the vast majority of series. It is the downfall of most series.
Of course, it is a balance as too quick skips actual crucial character development. This series is doing it well so far.

Jack is a pathetic hero. He's always afraid to engage with stronger enemies. He spends too much time complaining and struggling. Jack is worried too much instead of being confident in himself.

Jack sees some strong heroes and gets scared and pathetic and avoids them. When Jack fights with his friend, all he does is get his pathetic ass kicked while his friend does all the work. Jack in battles spends far more time getting his ass kicked than the other way around. Then he spends the after battle whining about how hurt he feels.

When he finds himself in an unfavorable position against enemies, his first reaction is to run. And even mid fight, he runs away. He complains that the world "hates him". He blames anything but himself for being pathetic.

Jack constantly says reaching the levels of the gods is an impossible goal. Again, a pathetic low confidence mentality.

Author makes Jack do and say stupid things in order to adjust the plot.

One of the aliens says "dude".

I can't believe how stupid Jack is. Jack experiences extreme stress when he taunts stronger enemies and they want to kill him and everyone he knows. People he cares deeply about die even. Then Jack reflects on how that probably wasn't a good idea to taunt stronger enemies. Then apparently a while later he forgets all that and does the same thing again. This is another example of Jack doing stupid illogical things just to advance the plot

This story had an interesting premise - well, that's it.
The main protagonist - Jack, is basically an incredible asshat who is alternately angsty, moronic, vastly overpowered, constantly causing problems for everyone around him and is having everything handed to him, without any real consequences for his actions. His internal monologue is constantly discussing how everyone around him is an incompetent idiotic, tyrannical, asshat - without any concept of the fact that he is doing exactly the same thing. He justifies everything by "I'm doing it because I'm good - I'm not like them". He beats up people at 30 - 50 levels above himself, without any real damage to himself. If he is damaged, he just "powers through with the dao of the fist".
I would rather this story had been about ANY of his companions, or even any of the villains - at least they had proper motivations.

vast improvement over the previous entry

The author seems to have improved on his work and writing skills. The long monotonous philosophical ramblings and exposition dumps constant in the previous book are cut down to the minimum and much more bearable. The story is structured well with a fantastic ticking clock that's moving the MC and plot along at an acceptable pace. The action is more grounded, making the world feel less cartoonish and more plausible. The secondary characters are all unique with their own personalities and goals that give their individual plights more weight. This is more of a Cultivation rpg rather than LitRPG, but don't let that stop your enjoyment of the work. This was a pleasant surprise to read and I can't wait until he releases his next entry.

I thought this was an improvement on book one. The author decided on a tone. This didn't feel like the cringy attempt at comedy from Book 1. it's tone was much more serious fitting the setting and plot of the story. The MC continues to grow and there wasn't an attempt to hamstring him. While a lot of stuff that happens seems rather convenient it fits the lore of the story. Overall the characters are pretty likeable.

At the end I was happy to see that The MC was starting to do things on his term. Most of the book he was a victim of circumstances and ended up in situation. Book 3 is trending to put him on a path to his pinnacle while finally getting a chance to do things his way.

DNF 79%

Every time I picked this book up, I'd skim a couple of pages and put it back down. The story line has really stalled in the Trial Planet, and there are too many ranking systems. We started out with levels 1-300? 400? Then we get Grades: F, E, D, C, B, A and theoretically the Grades and levels correspond, but there are huge jumps of power between Grades that levels don't really account for. Then the author introduced Elite, Lord, King whatever and Low, Middle, High, Peak. Oh, and Dao Seeds, Roots, whatever. But all of this muddled mess of rankings are pretty meaningless because our MC jumps 10 levels at a time and defeats others well above his weight-class.

amazing

I have read into the 1000,s of books. The only books I have read as good as this series is
Defiance of the fall
The lord of the rings
Unsouled (Lindon)
Saying that this book is incredibly entertaining. Pulls you on from the get go and doesn’t let go even as the last page ends. It is not only extremely entertaining but very deep. There is an incredible dive into the psych of humans. The fear of death of failure of abandonment by the group. All that wrapped into a rocket ride of fighting from the first few pages until the 3rd to last page. Literally. Absolutely amazing.

The MC escapes to a trial planet where he makes allies and new enemies in its dungeons.

Lots of interesting dao concepts as the MC leveled from newly integrated to immortal. The biggest battles were in the spirit realm, though there were plenty of physical battles too. He kept his eye on the goal to become strong enough to withstand or outwit his opressors. Now he plans to take the pain to those who made themselves his enemies.

The flashbacks to his faction on earth were helpful and interesting. The 3 way conflict between immortals, old ones and ancients is ongoing but pretty unclear.

The books are so long that I will take a break before tackling the next one.

I enjoy following Jack around to see what he is going to do next! I have to admit I saw a piece of the ending of the trial planet coming. It couldn’t possibly of gone any other way. I’m he Garden area did surprise me! All in all it is a good read and January is too far off for the next book to come out as far as I am concerned. I’m not good at waiting but what else can you do. 🤪 I very much like the length of the book it had more than 500 pages. I look forward to reading Road to Mastery 3!!

Fun and not boring. BRO POWER!

This was a fun read. Jack is still just okay, nothing special as a main character; the honor of best characters belong to all of the support characters! Truly, I have never before read a book series where the support characters are so complex that they outshine the main character.

I highly recommend this book. Each level of the trial planet is completely different with new experiences. And the planet story arch actually ends with the book while also pushing the storyline along.

Have Fun!!

A cracking read

I am a bit conflicted with regard to writing this review as I would much prefer the author to get on with preparing book three than wasting time reading this. Still, I do want to say how much I enjoyed book two. The new characters, the reappearance of old ones, the updates of Earth, just enough to keep the people alive.
I am so looking forward to the next instalment.

Help me read more books

Much better book in this second offering in the series. Way more world building here, and although there's still the system battles, most of the ones in this book are epic level battles, and serve to progress the story properly, rather than just being violent because they are scripted that way. This is a much better book than the first one, and I think it's much more enjoyable. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Oh Yeah.

Gotta love a well written (in my opinion) power fantasy. Gets my blood boiling too...just like Jack.

In all seriousness, the story's a bit cliché of course, but I still thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Sometimes it's about discovering how the writer puts their own unique spin to the concept. And from time to time, I still get surprised with some kind of twist or unpredictable event.

On to the next one!

Better than awesome

This book was gripping from the start and, somehow, just kept getting better. I almost never write reviews but I enjoyed this book so much that it feels like it would be a disservice to not write something. If you like sci-fi and litrpg then this is definitely a book you should read.

What happened?

The writer turned this book into something that I don't like... The mc slowly turned into a weak willed and self blaming like all the other writers of this type of book. Why is it hard for a writer to actually make a MC a bastard instead of a hero. Like the quote says the only good hero is a dead hero

Not enough stars

I found this fantastic. If you like this genre, you will not be disappointed. 2nd novel in the Jack Rust series, and I can not wait for the next one.

The fight scenes are vivid. The imagery is poetic. Each moment is described and written at a pace fast enough that you capture each moment perfectly 👌

It felt like I was Jack Rust himself

This series fascinates me; I had difficulty putting this book down once I got into it. There is little to no romance, lots of decent fighting and level progression, and a very satisfying ending setting up for the next book, which I'm already several chapters into. I'm sorry I didn't save this for a trip, as it would make travel go by quickly. It was nicely done and a ton of fun!

Even Vetter then the 1st

This series is exceptional. I'm a big litrpg fan and this series is in my running for current best. It can hold its own with Defiance of the fall and Primal Hunter. Highly recommend for litrpg/wuxia fans.

Great story

Great story that just gets better. The descriptions of the Dao and Jacks advancement are fantastic. I find it much more enjoyable than the more mystical descriptions so many Cultivation stories use. It just makes SENSE.

Also, never mess with the Bros.
