This story reminds me why I, as a nurse, no longer work in a hospital. Yes, we save people's lives, but we also torture people, and it's sometimes tough to tell what's worse: the disease or the treatment. I've witnessed horrors. (Though Manguso says Western medicine saved her ass.)
I was mesmerized by her story. I couldn't put it down.
At one moment she is very specific, describing her experience in clear-eyed, graphic detail. In the next, she breaks into stream-of-consciousness as she tries to make sense of things. But there is no making sense of things.
